[meteorite-list] Draconid Meteor Shower/Incoming CME

2012-10-07 Thread Ron Baalke

Space Weather News for Oct. 7, 2012
http://spaceweather.com

DRACONID METEOR WATCH: Earth is about to pass through a stream of debris from
comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner, source of the annual Draconid meteor shower. Last
year, Europeans witnessed a faint but furious outburst of 600 meteors per hour
when the shower peaked. No such display is expected this year, but the
Draconids are notoriously unpredictable. Northern-hemisphere sky watchers
should be alert for slow-moving meteors emerging from the head of the
constellation Draco the Dragon (not far from the North Star) on Sunday night,
Oct 7th, through Monday morning Oct. 8th. Check http://spaceweather.com for
more information and updates.

INCOMING CME: A coronal mass ejection (CME) is heading for Earth. The
incoming
cloud is expected to deliver a glancing blow to our planet's magnetosphere on
October 8th, possibly sparking auroras at high latitudes.

[meteorite-list] Hello All, ...

2012-10-07 Thread Bernd V. Pauli
Thank you all very, very much! Of course, I never saw myself
as a spammer but, nevertheless, it was really shocking to see
someone chose to call me a spammer!

I wanted to send a personal "Thank you mail" - especially to
those list members who sent private mails encouraging me to
ignore such negativity but, for some unknown reason, my
computer says: "Communication failed".

So, again, thank you very much ... A.M. + D.P. and M.H. and
quite a few others!

As for B.C., please, remember that there are several hundred
list members, listees, listoids, and some of them consider my
posts a positive contribution to this list, others may choose
a different perspective but tolerance and the voice of reason
should tell you that your personal opinion is not the universal
truth!

Best wishes to ALL of you,

Bernd

[meteorite-list] Accommodation for Tucson Gem & Mineral show

2012-10-07 Thread 博方 李
To my meteorite friends living in Tucson:

I am planning to attend the Tucson show as a visitor next Feb, and now I
prepare to book a hotel or rent a room for my trip. If anyone of you work on
the show every year and will go to the show every morning (will bring me to the
show every day), that is my best choise to rent a room from you.

Any offers or recommendations will be appreciated.
PS: I am a member of the meteoritical society, and good in Chiese cooking, and
easy to talk with.

Best regards!

Re: [meteorite-list] Fwd: Fwd: Chicken gun

2012-10-07 Thread Rob Lenssen
Sounds like THE standard joke, in this field of the aerospace technology to
me.

As a young aerospace stress engineer in 1993 or 1994, I once prepared a test
spec. for a bird impact test on an aircraft's windshield. The chicken had to
hit at the worst case location, at worst case conditions etc.

Our supplier PPG at Huntsville, Alabama conducted the test. They told me
that when a test failed, the standard joke was to blame a certain guy who
conducted the tests for forgetting to defrost the chicken :-)

All the best,
Rob L
