[meteorite-list] Possible Meteorite Fall in Washington state

2012-11-01 Thread Greg Hupé

Hey all,

I just received several phone calls from family and friends that the news is
reporting a possible meteorite fall in Washington state near I-5 and exit
212 by Hamilton. Why they think that exact exit is beyond me, but that is
what is on the local news up there right now!!

Best Regards,
Greg

[meteorite-list] Poles Unearth 300 kilo Meteorite

2012-11-01 Thread Pete Pete

Hi, All,

An interesting article:
http://phys.org/news/2012-10-poles-unearth-rare-kilo-meteorite.html

http://phys.org/news/2012-10-poles-unearth-rare-kilo-meteorite.html

Polish geologists have unearthed the largest meteorite ever found in Eastern
Europe and are hoping the rare find will provide fresh clues about the
composition of the Earth's inner core, they said Wednesday.

A cone shape is described - possibly nicely oriented?

Cheers,
Pete

NOVATO (CBS13) – A light show hard to forget brought out rock hunters who
are still canvassing Northern California days after the asteroid came
crashing down.

There are all kinds of rocks in parking lots and gravel in fields so how
do they know what a meteorite is? Well, they say to look for something
that stands out.

It may look like a tar ball to us earthlings, but according to meteorite
hunter Bob Verish, it’s a cosmic gem.

“It shows a history of having had some catastrophic collision in the
asteroid belt,” he said.

It’s a rock so foreign, so ancient, he says it was floating around Jupiter
before the Earth ever formed.

Rock Hunters Still Canvassing Northern California For Meteorites

Bob Verish found this space ball worth about $10,000 while searching the
Novato area in Marin County. (credit: CBS13)

Two weeks ago, a big, bright flash danced across the sky, sending a glow
show across half the state.

“We don’t get many falls like this in California,” he said.

As impressive as it was when it crashed, that’s also why it’s so difficult
to find its 4.5-billion-year-old parts.

“It came in at a lower angle. It spread out the stone,” he said.

Only four pieces have been found in Novato and they’re worth $100 per
gram. Bob’s weighs in at about 100, making it a $10,000 rock.

It’s a true treasure for a man who once sent NASA probes to outer space.
Now he’s probing this planet for galactic goods.

If it jumps to his magnet, he says it’s likely out of this world. Bob’s
now convinced there are larger pieces to this puzzle in Novato.

“We try not to think about the fact that it’s worse than a needle in a
haystack,” he said.

After searching several square miles, he’s convinced larger rocks are
lurking.

The search seems difficult and endless. They also have to speed it up
because every time it rains, they lose some evidence and so people like
bob are racing against the clock. There’s another storm on the way.

Thanks for sharing, Marcin. I wonder how many of our American friends could
easily identify most (or all) of the guys in the group photo at the top of the
line of pics. Some well-known people, collectors/dealers/scientists, from
Europe here concentrated right on the spot.

There will be hardly anyone out there on this list who really does not know who
that guy from the U.S. is, in about the middle of the top row? Do I see any
fingers up..?? :-)

Nice, representative pics! I especially like the closeups of the Kraehenberg
meteorite from Germany, a famous historical and very nicely oriented stone,
with just a few grams from likely only very few earlier cuts in private
collections.

[meteorite-list] Asteroid Belts at Just the Right Place are Friendly to Life

2012-11-01 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?release=2012-345

Asteroid Belts at Just the Right Place are Friendly to Life
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
November 01, 2012

PASADENA, Calif. -- Solar systems with life-bearing planets may be rare
if they are dependent on the presence of asteroid belts of just the
right mass, according to a study by Rebecca Martin, a NASA Sagan Fellow
from the University of Colorado in Boulder, and astronomer Mario Livio
of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Md.

They suggest that the size and location of an asteroid belt, shaped by
the evolution of the sun's planet-forming disk and by the gravitational
influence of a nearby giant Jupiter-like planet, may determine whether
complex life will evolve on an Earth-like planet.

This might sound surprising because asteroids are considered a nuisance
due to their potential to impact Earth and trigger mass extinctions. But
an emerging view proposes that asteroid collisions with planets may
provide a boost to the birth and evolution of complex life.

Asteroids may have delivered water and organic compounds to the early
Earth. According to the theory of punctuated equilibrium, occasional
asteroid impacts might accelerate the rate of biological evolution by
disrupting a planet's environment to the point where species must try
new adaptation strategies.

The astronomers based their conclusion on an analysis of theoretical
models and archival observations, including infrared data from NASA's
Spitzer Space Telescope.

Our study shows that only a tiny fraction of planetary systems observed
to date seem to have giant planets in the right location to produce an
asteroid belt of the appropriate size, offering the potential for life
on a nearby rocky planet, said Martin, the study's lead author. Our
study suggests that our solar system may be rather special.

The findings will appear today in the Monthly Notices of the Royal
Astronomical Society: Letters.

Martin and Livio suggest that the location of an asteroid belt relative
to a Jupiter-like planet is not an accident. The asteroid belt in our
solar system, located between Mars and Jupiter, is a region of millions
of space rocks that sits near the snow line, which marks the border of
a cold region where volatile material such as water ice is far enough
from the sun to remain intact. When Jupiter formed just beyond the snow
line, its powerful gravity prevented nearby material inside its orbit
from coalescing and building planets.

Instead, Jupiter's influence caused the material to collide and break
apart. These fragmented rocks settled into an asteroid belt around the sun.

To have such ideal conditions you need a giant planet like Jupiter that
is just outside the asteroid belt [and] that migrated a little bit, but
not through the belt, Livio explained. If a large planet like Jupiter
migrates through the belt, it would scatter the material. If, on the
other hand, a large planet did not migrate at all, that, too, is not
good because the asteroid belt would be too massive. There would be so
much bombardment from asteroids that life may never evolve.

Using our solar system as a model, Martin and Livio proposed that
asteroid belts in other solar systems would always be located
approximately at the snow line. To test their proposal, Martin and Livio
created models of planet-forming disks around young stars and calculated
the location of the snow line in those disks based on the mass of the
central star.

They then looked at all the existing space-based infrared observations
from the Spitzer Space Telescope of 90 stars having warm dust, which
could indicate the presence of an asteroid belt-like structure. The
temperature of the warm dust was consistent with that of the snow line.
The warm dust falls right onto our calculated snow lines, so the
observations are consistent with our predictions, Martin said.

The duo then studied observations of the 520 giant planets found outside
our solar system. Only 19 of them reside outside the snow line. This
suggests that most of the giant planets that may have formed outside the
snowline have migrated too far inward to preserve the kind of slightly
dispersed asteroid belt needed to foster enhanced evolution of life on
an Earth-like planet near the belt. Apparently, less than four percent
of the observed systems may actually harbor such a compact asteroid belt.

Based on our scenario, we should concentrate our efforts to look for
complex life in systems that have a giant planet outside of the snow
line, Livio said.

[meteorite-list] Ad: Special - NWA 6973, nice CK5 chondrite

2012-11-01 Thread Stefan Ralew

Dear list members,

in my current special sale I would like to introduce a new, rare and
visually very nice CK5 chondrite, NWA 6973 (S2, W2). It is a relatively
fresh CK5

with a nice black crust, partly covered with caliche. There are only six
pieces available, one end piece of 28 g which is the main mass of NWA 6973,
and five full slices. The stone isn´t hard enough to apply a polish, but the
front and back sides of each slice is grinded to remove the saw marks.

I have tried to promote the pieces as inexpensive as possible. In the
future, such prices will be probably no longer possible because the prices
at the source clearly rise.

http://www.sr-meteorites.de/specials/nwa6973/special-nwa6973.html

Thank you for your interest!

Best wishes,
Stefan Ralew

[meteorite-list] Mars Rover Opportunity Update: October 24-30, 2012

2012-11-01 Thread Ron Baalke

OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Survey Of 'Matijevic Hill' Continues - sols
3111-3117, Oct. 24, 2012-Oct. 30, 2012:

Opportunity has completed approximately half of the local area survey
around the location called Matijevic Hill (named in honor of Jake
Matijevic) at the inboard edge of Cape York on the rim of Endeavour
Crater.

The rover performed three survey drives on Sols 3112, 3114 and 3117
(Oct. 25, 27 and 30, 2012), driving 98 feet (30 meters) west, 30 feet (9
meters) north, and 108 feet (33 meters) south, respectively. Each drive
was preceded by the collection of targeted imagery and then followed by
taking a 360-degree Navigation camera (Navcam) panorama.

The plan ahead is to conduct more survey drives around this location.

As of Sol 3116 (Oct. 29, 2012), the solar array energy production was
549 watt-hours with an atmospheric opacity (Tau) of 0.649 and a solar
array dust factor of 0.601.

Total odometry is 21.90 miles (35,261.66 meters).

[meteorite-list] Mars Longevity Champ Switching Computers (Mars Odyssey)

2012-11-01 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?release=2012-347

Mars Longevity Champ Switching Computers
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
November 01, 2012

PASADENA, Calif. -- NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter, already the
longest-working spacecraft ever sent to Mars, will switch to some fresh,
redundant equipment next week that has not been used since before launch
in 2001.

Like many spacecraft, this orbiter carries a pair of redundant main
computers, so that a backup is available if one fails. Odyssey's
A-side computer and B-side computer each have several other
redundant subsystems linked to just that computer. The Odyssey team has
decided to switch to the B-side computer to begin using the B-side's
inertial measurement unit. This gyroscope-containing mechanism senses
changes in the spacecraft's orientation, providing important information
for control of pointing the antenna, solar arrays and instruments.

We have been on the A side for more than 11 years. Everything on the A
side still works, but the inertial measurement unit on that side has
been showing signs of wearing out, said Odyssey Mission Manager Chris
Potts at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. We will
swap to the B side on Nov. 5 so that we still have some life available
in reserve on the A side.

In many potential problem situations, the Odyssey's autonomous
fault-protection response would switch the spacecraft from the active
side to the other side. By preserving the capability of switching back
to a fully functional A side, the mission continues to have the
available protection of switching sides temporarily and correcting any
fixable anomaly on the B side.

The spare inertial measurement unit is factory new, last operated on
the day before launch, Potts said.

Odyssey launched April 7, 2001, began orbiting Mars on Oct. 24 of that
year, began systematic science observations of Mars in early 2002, and
broke the previous record for longest-working Mars spacecraft in
December 2010.

The side swap on Nov. 5 will intentionally put Odyssey into a
reduced-activity status called safe mode. As the team and the
spacecraft verify all systems can operate well over the following
several days, the orbiter will return to full operations, conducting its
own science observations, as well as serving as a communications relay
for NASA's active Mars rovers Opportunity and Curiosity.

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which shares the data relay return
responsibility for the rovers at Mars, will carry the full burden of
relay support for both rovers -- Opportunity and Curiosity -- during
Odyssey's side-swap period. There will be a reduction in the total
amount of relay data returned from Mars. The rover teams will reduce the
amount of data planned for downlinking until Odyssey returns to full
capacity after the side swap is complete, and will maintain near-normal
tactical operations in the interim.

Odyssey's longevity enables continued science, including the monitoring
of seasonal changes on Mars from year to year, and continued
communication-relay service.

Odyssey is managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, for
NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Lockheed Martin Space
Systems in Denver built the spacecraft. JPL and Lockheed Martin
collaborate on operating the spacecraft. For more about the Mars Odyssey
mission, visit: http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/odyssey .

[meteorite-list] A meteorite on Mars

2012-11-01 Thread bill kies

Does anyone have an idea or can you direct me to a resource that might help
explain the dynamics of a meteorite fall on Mars? What would a chondrite
travelling through a thin mostly CO2 atmosphere look like if it survived the
event? The forces of nature have to take their toll so what would we find in a
strewn field on Mars?

Once they've reached this state there's no going back. See the Bob Haag pic of
him slamming his pallasite slab.

Sonny all,

I've had some experience with trail cams. What you did is unethical. I see the
signs of baiting in that guy's eyes. You sprinkled unclassified NWA dust in
front of the camera. That ain't right. That poor bugger was caught by unfair
chase.

None-the-less, it's only right to sedate him. Go ahead with the tranquilizer
darts. It's only right now that the damage is done.

Hi List,

I just returned from Novato, California where I had a chance to do an
investigation on Meteorite Zombies. I was able to catch a few pictures on my
hidden trail cams placed around the Novato area. Here is the Link.
