Re: [meteorite-list] Russian meteor: Stefan Geens' research updates - amazing photos and videos

2013-02-20 Thread Robin Whittle
Here are some more interesting items from the emailed updates I get for:

http://ogleearth.com/2013/02/reconstructing-the-chelyabinsk-meteors-path-with-google-earth-youtube-and-high-school-math/

Another view from the west, with exact coordinates:

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiN1I2CK4gA

A view from the north-west showing the direction of the sun with respect
to the smoke trail. The camera appears to be directly under the shadow
of the largest part of the smoke trail. This shows a small trail of
smoke after the main trail, and that small trail is being disrupted
either by uneven winds or perhaps by different temperatures and
densities causing different rates of convection:

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwkKvLf3fZE

>From the south, showing the thin trail on the west and the immense size
of the main smoke trail where the greatest conflagration occurred:

Electron microscopy of meteorite fragments:

>From the west, apparently 55.0406141, 59.0409778:

A more detailed map:

https://maps.google.ee/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=216221265233140305376.0004d5da6860954d651ba

Astounding high-resolution photos from the north, by Marat Ahmetvaleev,
apparently from: 55.170043°, 61.316855°, including a single wide-angle
photo of the entire main part of the smoke trail, and almost all of the
mini-trails at the start and end of it:

  http://marateaman.livejournal.com/27910.html

This also shows the dispersal of the trail over 33 minutes.

This video was mentioned for its sounds, but for me the most interesting
aspect of it is that it is the only video I have seen which shows at
least two smaller objects following the main mass after the main part of
the smoke trail. I suggest switching to full-screen and starting the
player at 4:30:

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQ6Pa5Pv_io

It is a curious thing, but it seems that high levels of crime and police
corruption, including the staging of so-called "accidents" (including
people throwing themselves in the path of cars) has lead to so many
Russian people installing surveillance cameras, which turned out to have
recorded most of the significant videos of this extraordinary event.

Another curious thing is that one of the videos, I can't remember which,
showed a major intersection by a bridge, with the car waiting for the
traffic lights. The biggest visible to humans meteor event in a century
lights up the entire place, and as far as I can see, the numerous
pedestrians just keep on walking. How could they not pause, turn around
to see what the light is??

[meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk- To be? Or not to be? Prices say yes, but I'm extremely skeptical

2013-02-20 Thread Brandon
I was browsing Chelyabinsk on eBay to see what, if anything real, may be for
sale and noticed two specific specimens for sale by eBay seller Pavelkuzmin92.
Both by picture appear to be legit (which has obviously been the driver behind
the high bids already!), but the weights appear to be all wrong and by the look
of the larger of the two, at least 15-20 grams.

Screenshot of media video or legit stones being sold? Of course, I only ask
because I want to know whether to pull out the popcorn or not :-p

Best,
Brandon D.

[meteorite-list] NASA Mars Rover Confirms First Drilled Martian Rock Sample

2013-02-20 Thread Ron Baalke

RELEASE: 13-059

NASA MARS ROVER CONFIRMS FIRST DRILLED MARTIAN ROCK SAMPLE

PASADENA, Calif. -- NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has relayed new images
that confirm it has successfully obtained the first sample ever
collected from the interior of a rock on another planet. No rover has
ever has drilled into a rock beyond Earth and collected a sample from
its interior.

Transfer of the powdered-rock sample into an open scoop was visible
for the first time in images received Wednesday at NASA's Jet
Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif.

"Seeing the powder from the drill in the scoop allows us to verify for
the first time the drill collected a sample as it bore into the
rock," said JPL's Scott McCloskey, drill systems engineer for
Curiosity. "Many of us have been working toward this day for years.
Getting final confirmation of successful drilling is incredibly
gratifying. For the sampling team, this is the equivalent of the
landing team going crazy after the successful touchdown."

The drill on Curiosity's robotic arm took in the powder as it bored a
2.5-inch (6.4-centimeter) hole into a target on flat Martian bedrock
on Feb. 8. The rover team plans to have Curiosity sieve the sample
and deliver portions of it to analytical instruments inside the
rover.

The scoop now holding the precious sample is part of Curiosity's
Collection and Handling for In-Situ Martian Rock Analysis (CHIMRA)
device. During the next steps of processing, the powder will be
enclosed inside CHIMRA and shaken once or twice over a sieve that
screens out particles larger than 0.006 inch (150 microns) across.

Small portions of the sieved sample later will be delivered through
inlet ports on top of the rover deck into the Chemistry and
Mineralogy (CheMin) instrument and Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM)
instrument.

In response to information gained during testing at JPL, the
processing and delivery plan has been adjusted to reduce use of
mechanical vibration. The 150-micron screen in one of the two test
versions of CHIMRA became partially detached after extensive use,
although it remained usable. The team has added precautions for use
of Curiosity's sampling system while continuing to study the cause
and ramifications of the separation.

The sample comes from a fine-grained, veiny sedimentary rock called
"John Klein," named in memory of a Mars Science Laboratory deputy
project manager who died in 2011. The rock was selected for the first
sample drilling because it may hold evidence of wet environmental
conditions long ago. The rover's laboratory analysis of the powder
may provide information about those conditions.

NASA's Mars Science Laboratory Project is using the Curiosity rover
with its 10 science instruments to investigate whether an area within
Mars' Gale Crater ever has offered an environment favorable for
microbial life. JPL manages the project for NASA's Science Mission
Directorate in Washington.

An image of the drill's rock powder held in the scoop is online at:

anyone has visited the Barcelona Natural Science Museum (Museo Blau) and if
they have a meteorite exhibit.  I had so much fun visiting the Natural History

2013-02-20 Thread Regine P.
The interview has been cut down to one sentence. Everybody who has dealt with
the media before knows how these things work.

I actually think his statement is honest and charming - and only hypocrites
would deny that it is 100% true. We love meteorites - we want to have them.
Simple! You want to hide this fact from the rest of the world? Good luck...

Stop bitching around and enjoy. These are exciting times, and I am sure there
will be enough material for all of you.

Having done quite a few interviews on this too I must admit I was quite
impressed how the media do seem to be learning. They were making a genuine
effort to ask rather than just speculating. And it was quite noticeable how
facts like the casualty figures and bolide size and such were not too widely
hyped upwards. If anything they were on the conservative side! There was a
dreadfully slow news stream coming out of Russia, apart from the fantastic
video footage, so this may have helped as essentially there was a limited 'pool
of news' to draw from, so it all sounded quite similar.

If you distinguish between actual quotes and what the editors made up
