I was on my way to our car when something suddenly lit up the

diameter ca. 2 inches, color greenish, duration seveal seconds, length
of luminous train (apparently 50-60 cm). She and her girls heard no

So, for those who haven't asked yet, here is a sample

I was hit as hard as anyone, but I thought he was hysterical.
My sense of humor made me believe he is a friggin comic genius -

PS: QUESTION FOR ALL:

Does anyone out there have copies of Proud Tom's old Web Sites???
It was a long time ago and way before I learned the incredibly simple

THIS, in a way, is much more interesting than the Proud Tom issue,

Many of those collectors may now be hiding in the dark, some will,

new gamblers, and also new serious people in the world of meteoritics...

[meteorite-list] New paid Ad program for the mailing list - starts 4/7/2014

2014-03-31 Thread Art Jones
Good Evening;

If you never advertise on the list you can disregard this email! If you do
advertise please read below:

Beginning Monday, April 7, 2014 I will be implementing a paid advertising
program for the Meteorite Mailing List. I've been working on a program like
this for quite a while now but have been struggling with the best way to do it.
I think I've come up with an approach that's both simple and affordable. My
goal isn't to make a lot of money, but rather to cover the costs associated
with Meteorite Mailing List and the related websites. I'd also like to cut
down on the total number of Ads that appear on the list on any given day,
which I think is better in the long run for both advertisers and subscribers
(i.e. improve the signal to noise ratio). Hopefully this new program will
improve everyone's list experience.

Here's how it will work
--
Ads can be purchased one at a time or in bulk, and payment can be made through
PayPal. The 1 Ad per week limit and the current policy regarding no image
attachments will remain (see policies below). I am considering allowing images
under a certain and also some type of Ad credit for relevant posts but I need
to work on those ideas a bit more. Also, as the majority of members aren't
dealers, but may want to sell something every now and then, everyone will be
provided with 2 Ad credits (free ads) to be used during the year.

Meteorite List Ad Rates

- One-off Advertising cost
* Per Ad price - $4 via PayPal

- Bulk Advertising options (Pre-paid Ads)
* 12 ads
$35 - Single payment via PayPal ($2.92 per ad)
* 52 ads
$125 - Single payment via PayPal ($2.40 per ad)

Payment won't be required before a One-off Ad is placed, but should be made
within 1 day. Payment for the Bulk Ad options is expected prior to placing the
first Ad. I'll be adding a page to the Meteorite Central website with payment
links each option listed above.

Mailing List ad-related policies

 - 1 Ad per week limit
 - Plain text emails only
 - No image attachments
 - 60k email size limit
 - 2 Ad credits per member (to be used during the year)
 - Failure to pay for Ads placed on the list will result in member removal.

Please feel free to send me an off-list email if you have any comments,
suggestions, or questions.

Best Regards and Happy Hunting/Collecting!

Excellent idea Greg. Thanks.
And yes, Art, checks would be great. You are not going to make a

Hi Art,

I completely support your advertising requirements, and Thank You for
finding a way to keep your forum to continue. One thing I would like to
suggest, please accept payment by check as PayPal will take their fees
from

you and I really do not like that!!

Subject: [meteorite-list] New paid Ad program for the mailing list -
starts4/7/2014

Good Evening;

If you never advertise on the list you can disregard this email! If
you do

advertise please read below:

Beginning Monday, April 7, 2014 I will be implementing a paid
advertising
program for the Meteorite Mailing List. I've been working on a program
like
this for quite a while now but have been struggling with the best way
to do

it. I think I've come up with an approach that's both simple and
affordable. My goal isn't to make a lot of money, but rather to cover
the
costs associated with Meteorite Mailing List and the related websites.
I'd
also like to cut down on the total number of Ads that appear on the
list on
any given day, which I think is better in the long run for both
advertisers
and subscribers (i.e. improve the signal to noise ratio). Hopefully
this

new program will improve everyone's list experience.

Here's how it will work
--
Ads can be purchased one at a time or in bulk, and payment can be made
through PayPal. The 1 Ad per week limit and the current policy
regarding no

image attachments will remain (see policies below). I am considering
allowing images under a certain and also some type of Ad credit for
relevant
posts but I need to work on those ideas a bit more. Also, as the
majority

of members aren't dealers, but may want to sell something every now and
then, everyone will be provided with 2 Ad credits (free ads) to be used
during the year.

Meteorite List Ad Rates

- One-off Advertising cost
   * Per Ad price - $4 via PayPal

- Bulk Advertising options (Pre-paid Ads)
   * 12 ads
$35 - Single payment via PayPal ($2.92 per ad)
   * 52 ads
$125 - Single payment via PayPal ($2.40 per ad)

Payment won't be required before a One-off Ad is placed, but should be
made
within 1 day. Payment for the Bulk Ad options is expected prior to
placing
the first Ad. I'll be adding a page to the Meteorite Central website
with

payment links each option listed above.

Mailing List ad-related policies

- 1 Ad per week limit
- Plain text emails only
- No image attachments
- 60k email size limit
- 2 Ad credits per member (to be used during the year)
- Failure to pay for Ads placed on the list will result in member
removal.

Please feel free to send me an off-list email if you have any comments,
suggestions, or questions.

Best Regards and Happy Hunting/Collecting!

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Link of the Week #2 : NASA JSC Astromaterials Acquisition Curation Office

2014-03-31 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Meteorite Link of the Week #2 - http://curator.jsc.nasa.gov/

Notes : This is the website of NASA's Johnson Space Center meteorite
curation office. This is the office than handles all of the
astromaterials brought into the NASA collection. This includes
meteorites, Apollo lunar samples, comet particles, solar wind
particles, and others. There is a searchable database that indexes
the entire JSC meteorite collection which comprises (in most part) the
specimens brought back by the ANSMET expeditions.

Only visit this site when you have some time to kill because there is
a lot of material to wade through - endless pages of data and endless
photos. The photos are really nice and are worth a look just for eye
candy purposes (desktop wallpapers anyone?).

This link will take you to the home page of the curation office -
http://curator.jsc.nasa.gov/

From there, you want to select Meteorites on the menu of options :
Lunar, Meteorites, Stardust, Genesis, Cosmic Dust, Space Hardware, and
Hayabusa - this will take you to the following link -
http://curator.jsc.nasa.gov/antmet/index.cfm

You now find yourself on the homepage of Antarctic Meteorites
(ANSMET). On the left side of the screen, click the box that says
Newsletter and Classification. A drop-down menu will open up and
you want to click Meteorite Classification Database.

Ok, here we go down the rabbit hole. You are now at this URL :
http://curator.jsc.nasa.gov/antmet/classdb.cfm#AdvSearch

You will want to bookmark this page and keep it handy right next to
your Meteoritical Bulletin Database link. Like the Met Bull Database,
the Antarctic database is searchable and browseable. You will see an
advanced search form with tabs for various types of meteorites. You
can search/browse by name, type, sample number, year, and other
criteria. Let us use an obvious example that everyone knows - the
famous Martian meteorite ALH-84001.

Type ALH84001 into the Sample Number query box and click Search at
the bottom of the form.

You will now see the search results screen (which is similar in
function to the Met Bull database search). Click on ALH-84001 in the
results and you will be brought to this page -
http://curator.jsc.nasa.gov/antmet/samples/petdes.cfm?sample=ALH84001

This is the available data and photos for the specimen in question.
Just like the Met Bull database, some entries have more information
available than others. Some have many high resolution photos each.

Now, get yourself a tall cup of coffee and start searching for other
types - CM2, Achondrites, Lunars, Martians, etc. You will see
thousands of them that you have never heard of. And some of those are
hidden aesthetic gems. Some are beautiful specimens, despite spending
many centuries in a wind-swept cold desert. You will also see many
photos in X-pol light.

Have fun and see you next week. :)

MikeG

[meteorite-list] New paid Ad program for the mailing list - starts 4/7/2014

2014-03-31 Thread Shawn Alan
Hello Art and Listers

Hello Art I counted about an average of 20 AD per week give or take 5. If you
were to charge your $8 buck per AD that's around $700 bucks per month. Man with
that amount of money you will be able to do wonders with the website :) What
would be cool too is if you added a spot on your website to allow dealers to
have banners to advertise their website sites and charge $15 bucks a month for
a spot. On average, I see websites that do that and they have about 25 dealers
advertising at any given time. That would generate about $375 a month plus the
$700 from the ads from people posting on the list. But if you wanted to get
more traffic to your website, cause at the end of the day that's every
advertiser wants, maybe charge $5 a year to members that would like to get
every email sent to them rather than the bulk format email system. That's 1700
members and lest say 1500 get every email that could generate $7500 a year. So
if you didn't want to pay the $5
a year mail service fee, people would go to the website and see what is being
said in real time on the site, which I used to do in the past, before the
overhaul. And who knows with the website in real time, more people would go
directly to the website to see what is being talked about and when you have
Google have their third party advertisers advertise on your website, they will
see that you have a lot more traffic. and you will be able to make more money!

Re: [meteorite-list] New paid Ad program for the mailing list - starts 4/7/2014

2014-03-31 Thread Ruben Garcia
Hi Art,

I think you've made an Ad program that most of us can live with.
Personally I appreciate $2.40 per Ad (when purchasing 1 years worth)
instead or the $7-$8 per Ad that we had talked about in private
emails. I'll send my $125 payment via PayPal as soon as you let us
know how to do so.

However, I think a lot of us still wonder how you'll stop the sneaky
or inadvertent Ads.

Honestly, I think most people on this forum know that I don't collect
meteorites so nearly every topic I'll ever bring up is in reality an
advertisement. If I show fantastic green inclusions in the new NWA
8118 Lodranite - people know it's for sale. If I show a photo of a
Campo Del Cielo with 7 natural holes, it's for sale. If I ever talk
about any meteorite EVER, and I own itit's for sale.

Maybe the relevant topic Ad credit could come into play sooner than
later? I think I could post a lot of relevant topics or Ads.

Ruben and Lister

You do bring up a good point Ruben. That is a grey area and I have seen a few
members do it and say look at this new meteorite I have and when you go to
there website they have items listed for sale of that new fall or meteorite.
Also, I have seen members say well if you want to see a good sample of this
meteorite you can look at my website and they give a link to there website
which is a dealer website in meteorite posts. To me that seems like
advertising. I have also seen when people are talking about thin sections and
some people say, hey if you want to see some good sample go to my dealer
website. I see that happen a lot and think if ads are going to be charged on
here, that also should be constituted as an AD? What about Trades? is that an
AD or wanted post and someone posts their website?

One other point I like to ask, you say less AD will be better for dealers and
list members? Well I didn't know the AD on here were a big problem. I thought
the arguing and the nonsensical topics  was disrupting the website. Also $8 an
AD to the main deals is nothing, but for the ones that struggle with money wont
be able to pay that and post an AD. I guess it will be better for some dealers,
because there will be less competition advertising on here.
