member get 2 free ads per year. I guess Art will have to keep track of 1700

[meteorite-list] Dawn Journal - March 31, 2014

2014-04-01 Thread Ron Baalke

http://dawnblog.jpl.nasa.gov/2014/03/31/dawn-journal-march-31/

Dawn Journal
by Marc Rayman
March 31, 2014

Dear Correspondawnts,

Powering its way through deep space, Dawn draws ever closer to dwarf
planet Ceres. To reach its destination, the interplanetary spaceship
gently reshapes its path around the sun with its extraordinary ion
propulsion system. In about a year, the spacecraft will gracefully
slip into orbit so it can begin to unveil the nature of the mysterious
world of rock and ice, an intriguing protoplanetary remnant from the
dawn of the solar system.

Even as Dawn ascends the solar system hill, climbing farther and
farther from the sun, penetrating deeper into the main asteroid belt
between Mars and Jupiter, its distance to Earth is shrinking. This
behavior may be perplexing for readers with a geocentric bias, but
to understand it, we can take a broader perspective.

The sun is the conductor of the solar system symphony. Its gravity
dictates the movements of everything that orbits it: Earth as well as
the other planets, Vesta, Ceres, and myriad smaller objects, including
asteroids and Dawn. (Actually, the gravity of every single body affects
how all of the others move, but with more than 99 percent of the entire
solar system's mass concentrated in the gargantuan sun, it dominates the
gravitational landscape.)

Whether it is for a planet or Dawn orbiting the sun, a spacecraft or
moon orbiting a planet, the sun or other stars orbiting the Milky Way
(the Milky Way galaxy, that is, not your correspondent's cat Milky Way),
or the Milky Way galaxy orbiting the Virgo supercluster of galaxies
(home to an appreciable fraction of our readership), any orbit is the
perfect balance between the inward tug of gravity and the inexorable
tendency of objects to travel in a straight line. If you attach a weight
to a string and swing it around in a circle, the force you use to pull
on the string mimics the gravitational force the sun exerts on the
bodies that orbit it. The effort you expend in keeping the weight
circling serves constantly to redirect its course, forcing it to curve;
if you release the string, the weight's natural motion would take it
away in a straight line (we are ignoring here the effect of Earth's
gravity on the weight).

The force of gravity dwindles as the distance increases, so the sun
pulls harder on a nearby body than on a farther one. Therefore, to
remain in orbit, to balance the relentless gravitational lure, the
closer object must travel at higher speed, resisting the stronger
attraction. The same effect applies at Earth. Satellites that orbit very
close (including, for example, the International Space Station, 250
miles, or 400 kilometers, above the surface) must streak around the
planet at about 17,000 mph (7.6 kilometers per second) to avoid being
drawn down. The moon, orbiting almost a thousand times farther above,
needs only to travel at less than 2300 mph (about 1.0 kilometers per
second) to balance Earth's weaker hold at its remote location.

For that reason, Mercury zips around the sun faster than any of the
other planets. Mars travels more slowly than Earth, and the still more
distant residents of the asteroid belt, whether natural (all of them but
one) or a product of human ingenuity (one: Dawn), proceed at an even
more leisurely pace. As Earth makes its relatively rapid annual trip
around the sun, the distance to the spacecraft that left it behind in
2007 alternately shrinks and grows.

We can visualize this with one of the popular models of clocks available
in the Dawn gift shop on your planet, in which the hour hand is longer
than the minute hand. Imagine the sun as being at the center of the
clock. The tip of the short minute hand represents Earth, and the end of
the hour hand represents Dawn. Some of the time (such as between noon
and shortly after 12:30), the distance between the ends of the hands
increases. Then the situation reverses as the faster minute hand begins
moving closer and closer to the hour hand as the time approaches about 1:05.

Earth and Dawn are exhibiting the same repetitive behavior. Of course,
their relative motion is more complicated than that of the clock hands,
because Dawn's ion thrusting is constantly changing its solar orbit (and
so the distance and speed at which it loops around the sun), but the
principle is the same. They have been drawing closer since August 2013.
Earth, coming from behind, is now about to pass Dawn and move ahead. The
stalwart probe will not even take note however, as its sights remain
firmly set on an unexplored alien world.

may change according to the layering of minerals. Colors of meteors depend on
the relative influence of the metallic content of the meteoroid versus the
superheated air plasma, which its passage engenders

Green colours are not due to the meteoroid composition, but to Oxygen in the
atmosphere (the so-called forbidden Oxygen line).

That is the IP address from which the Proud Tom comment was posted to

the latter is not.

Even with both of those data there is no way of telling if Mr. Evans

[meteorite-list] AD: Caddo County, OK Killer IAB Silicated Iron

2014-04-01 Thread Steve Arnold

Hello List,

I figure I should jump in here and get my one last free ad in while I
can.

I have some small part slices of Caddo County, Oklahoma available now.

This is an amazing IAB silicated iron, unlike anything I have ever seen
before. In fact when it first hit the market years ago it was thought
it might have been a Lodranite. (That was back when lodranites were
still grouped by some as a stony-iron due to their high metal
content.)

These part slices, while small, dramatically exhibit a fine
Widmanstatten pattern. This is in stark comparison of other silicated
irons we often see. Some of these have a larger iron portions while
others have more silicates. I struggle to determine which I personally
like best...they all, while different to some extent, look awesome.

I have seen very little of this rare rock on the market, although in my
early days in the meteorite business, this was one that would catch my
attention in Bob Haag's Private Collection catalogs.

While not as special maybe as a Lodranite (type wise) it definitely is
prettier than any Lodranite I have seen.

$18/g - $20/g

Post card ID card comes with them at not cost, loaded in Riker Boxes

[meteorite-list] Questions and Answers - New paid Ad program for the mailing list - starts 4/7/2014

2014-04-01 Thread Art Jones
Good Afternoon;

I've gotten several good questions so wanted to address in one email below:

Q: Is this an April Fool's joke?
A: No, that's one reason I have it starting on 4/7/2014 ... ;^)

Q: Can checks be used for payment?
A: Yes, checks will be accepted (US banks only). I can also accept major
credit cards and cash (if you are local in San Diego)

Q: What if I only post an ad once a year? Will I be charged?
A: No, everyone gets 2 free ad credits

Q: Are the 2 free ad credits available immediately?
A: Yes, once the program starts on 4/7, the credits can be used. Until
4/7/2014 all ads are free.

Q: How will you stop sneaky and/or inadvertent ads?
A: As the list isn't moderated I can't really stop anything the first time.
It's really pretty simple for me to tell what is an advertisement and what
isn't so I'll be monitoring the list and working with folks if they
'inadvertently' send an ad out or try to game the system.

Q: Are Trade requests considered ads?
A: Currently no, but if trade requests increase substantially I will need to
revisit them (currently trade requests are fairly infrequent).

Q: How would the relevant topic ad credit work?
A: Not really sure at this point. One possible ideas would be to issue an ad
credit for every N number of relevant posts that someone contributes. I'm
still thinking about this one so it's not part of the plan for the time being.

Q: How will ads be displayed?
A: Nothing will change regarding how ads get to the list or display other than
the fee (they are just another list email). Ad emails to the list need to
start with the word AD or SALE in the subject line and should be plain
text. Embedded images are currently not permitted.

Best Regards, Art

Good Evening;

If you never advertise on the list you can disregard this email! If you do

Beginning Monday, April 7, 2014 I will be implementing a paid advertising

I think I've come up with an approach that's both simple and affordable. My
goal isn't to make a lot of money, but rather to cover the costs associated
with Meteorite Mailing List and the related websites. I'd also like to cut
down on the total number of Ads that appear on the list on any given day,
which I think is better in the long run for both advertisers and subscribers
(i.e. improve the signal to noise ratio). Hopefully this new program will
improve everyone's list experience.

Here's how it will work
--
Ads can be purchased one at a time or in bulk, and payment can be made through
PayPal. The 1 Ad per week limit and the current policy regarding no image
attachments will remain (see policies below). I am considering allowing images
under a certain and also some type of Ad credit for relevant posts but I need
to work on those ideas a bit more. Also, as the majority of members aren't
dealers, but may want to sell something every now and then, everyone will be
provided with 2 Ad credits (free ads) to be used during the year.

Meteorite List Ad Rates

- One-off Advertising cost
* Per Ad price - $4 via PayPal

- Bulk Advertising options (Pre-paid Ads)
* 12 ads
$35 - Single payment via PayPal ($2.92 per ad)
* 52 ads
$125 - Single payment via PayPal ($2.40 per ad)

Payment won't be required before a One-off Ad is placed, but should be made
within 1 day. Payment for the Bulk Ad options is expected prior to placing the
first Ad. I'll be adding a page to the Meteorite Central website with payment
links each option listed above.

Mailing List ad-related policies

 - 1 Ad per week limit
 - Plain text emails only
 - No image attachments
 - 60k email size limit
 - 2 Ad credits per member (to be used during the year)
 - Failure to pay for Ads placed on the list will result in member removal.

Please feel free to send me an off-list email if you have any comments,
suggestions, or questions.

Best Regards and Happy Hunting/Collecting!

Subject: [meteorite-list] Questions and Answers - New paid Ad program
for the mailing list - starts 4/7/2014

Good Afternoon;

I've gotten several good questions so wanted to address in one email
below:

Q: Is this an April Fool's joke?
A: No, that's one reason I have it starting on 4/7/2014 ... ;^)

Q: Can checks be used for payment?
A: Yes, checks will be accepted (US banks only). I can also accept
major credit

cards and cash (if you are local in San Diego)

Q: What if I only post an ad once a year? Will I be charged?
A: No, everyone gets 2 free ad credits

Q: Are the 2 free ad credits available immediately?
A: Yes, once the program starts on 4/7, the credits can be used. Until
4/7/2014

all ads are free.

Q: How will you stop sneaky and/or inadvertent ads?
A: As the list isn't moderated I can't really stop anything the first
time. It's
really pretty simple for me to tell what is an advertisement and what
isn't so
I'll be monitoring the list and working with folks if they
'inadvertently' send

an ad out or try to game the system.

Q: Are Trade requests considered ads?
A: Currently no, but if trade requests increase substantially I will
need to

revisit them (currently trade requests are fairly infrequent).

Q: How would the relevant topic ad credit work?
A: Not really sure at this point. One possible ideas would be to issue
an ad
credit for every N number of relevant posts that someone contributes.
I'm still

thinking about this one so it's not part of the plan for the time being.

Q: How will ads be displayed?
A: Nothing will change regarding how ads get to the list or display
other than
the fee (they are just another list email). Ad emails to the list need
to start
with the word AD or SALE in the subject line and should be plain
text.

Embedded images are currently not permitted.

Best Regards, Art

Good Evening;

If you never advertise on the list you can disregard this email! If

Beginning Monday, April 7, 2014 I will be implementing a paid

So I sold exactly $1,000 worth of Caddo County today (and got a couple people
in line for a few more slices when I take my final cuts later).

This came after posting my ad a few hours earlier, an ad that was free this
week but would have cost me $4 next week.

I will have to consider long and hard if I think the ads to this market are
worth $4!

My golly, it's fun to see this surface after so many years. A classic for
those of us who came up in the late 80s/90s; it's like the music to which we
 grew up. Nice offering!

I have some small part slices of Caddo County, Oklahoma available now.

This is an amazing IAB silicated iron, unlike anything I have ever seen
before. In fact when it first hit the market years ago it was thought it
might have been a Lodranite. (That was back when lodranites were still
grouped by some as a stony-iron due to their high metal content.)

These part slices, while small, dramatically exhibit a fine Widmanstatten
pattern. This is in stark comparison of other silicated irons we often see.
Some of these have a larger iron portions while others have more silicates.
I struggle to determine which I personally like best...they all, while
different to some extent, look awesome.

Seems this did not get to the MetList because I sent it in non-text format.

Dear Zorro.

It was Paul Harvey who did The rest of the story. And the information you

As someone pointed out earlier, this is not definitive proof. One would need
the MAC address of the actual computer that sent the email and know who the
computer belonged to. The former is sometimes available, the latter is not.

Even with both of those data there is no way of telling if Mr. Evans was using
PT as a joke or because he is PT. So, all we are left with is a smoking gun.

PT was before my time on the MetList but I can say with certainty that Zorro

Re: [meteorite-list] Proud Tom NOT

2014-04-01 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi Folks,

For the record, I never posted that comment that appears under my
name. I have posted several comments to the MPOD during it's tenure
and those originate from my IP address (which is not the one shown
being used by this other person).

In other words, I have no affiliation or connection whatsoever to
Proud Tom, Boastful Bob, or Tom Dickenharry.

I guess I should be flattered, but I am not. This miscreant has
apparently used my Galactic Stone and Ironworks moniker at least
once, as shown here by Paul. So, if anyone receives a hostile or
negative comment from someone posting as me - it is not. I've been on
my good behavior for a good while now and will remain that way.

It's a beautifully-clear night outside right now. I am going out with
the 15x70mm mounted binoculars and do some richfield viewing. Cigar
and drink in hand. Life is too good for circus clowns to bother me.

Best regards,

MikeG

PS - gorgeous beach weather here today. Sun, bikinis, surf. Boo-yah. ;)

Re: [meteorite-list] AD - Very Special Auctions Ending

2014-04-01 Thread Bob Falls
I am the same as John;
The email from Adam was sent on Mon 3/31/2014 1:13 PM MST that would agree
with Adam sending around noon PST and received / delivered to me Tue 4/1/14
11:54 AM MST and this would match with John receiving at 10:53 AM PST
(within a minute)

Not sure where it got delayed as all my other list post are received the
same minute they are sent .the one from Adam must have gotten caught in
the time warp John mentioned.

these ads go through immediately and not be moderated, I think it's a

P.S. if you doubt what I'm saying, I'll do a screen shot of when these

Hi Dr Marco,
thank you for the information you provided. I have found more than once that
the internet is becoming very unreliable for accurate informationespecially
from wikipedia
This is in no reference to Meteorites Australia (which is extremely accurate),
but rather wikipedia and various other websites I try to learn from having a

2014-04-01 Thread Chris Peterson
Wikipedia is generally one of the best sources for scientific information,
especially as a first stop. And the article about meteors is no exception.
While the color of meteors (especially in the case of green) is generally
dominated by atmospheric emission, the meteoroid composition certainly plays a
role as well. This makes meteor spectra very useful. But human color vision
being what it is (our eyes being very poor spectrometers), it isn't possible to
accurately determine meteoroid composition visually.
