[meteorite-list] Notice to eBay Meteorite Sellers

2015-02-28 Thread Galactic Stone & Ironworks via Meteorite-list
Hi Folks,

I have noticed a new trend with meteorite dealers on eBay. Two
different dealers have done this that I know of, and there may be
others.

What I am referring to is bidder requirements. I tried to place a bid
on two different specimens from two different dealers and both times
eBay stopped me and said I could not bid because my PayPal account is
not "linked" to eBay.

I think eBay is a hell for sellers and I loathe the eBay boardroom. I
do not want those greedy bastards having any more access to my
financial information that is necessary. So I refuse to link my
PayPal account to eBay. I know this is somewhat silly since both
companies are intimately linked, but I do not want eBay having it's
hooks any deeper into my pocketbook than necessary.

I am sure there are other eBay members who feel the same. If you are
a seller who has set this requirment, you are losing sales. You just
lost one right now. I could have bid your items up, but I was not
allowed to place a bid. It's not my loss, I will always find the
specimen I want eventually, either off eBay entirely, or from another
seller without those requirements.

My money is just as green as anyone else's and it spends just the
same. If you have this requirement set on your eBay auctions, then
you are losing money.

Just a heads-up. Do with it what you want. ;)

Best regards,

MikeG

[meteorite-list] Mohler lecture celebrates 40 years

2015-02-28 Thread Shawn Alan via Meteorite-list
Hello Listers

Enjoy the good read, go Nininger :)

Shawn Alan
IMCA 1633

Website http://meteoritefalls.com

Mohler lecture celebrates 40 years

For 40 years, the generosity of Dr. Robert and Mrs. Fern Shoemaker
Mohler has brought prominent speakers and cultural programs to McPherson
College, spanning academic disciplines and representing a wide range of
human experience and thinking. The first lecture in 1975 highlighted MC
professor Dr. H.H. Nininger, famous for his work on meteorites and
paleontology. In addition to providing information about Dr.
Nininger’s lifetime of knowledge in meteorites, it also functioned as
a 90th birthday party for both Dr. Nininger, the first speaker of the
lecture series, and Dr. Mohler, one of the lecture’s two
benefactors.Since then, speakers have included Dr. Elmer Staats,
comptroller of the currency of the United States in 1982; “Roots”
author Alex Haley in 1987; and Holocaust survivor Gerda Weissman Klein
in 2003.Susan Taylor, a granddaughter of Dr. Mohler who helps select the
speakers every year, said Haley’s lecture always stood out in her
mind.“The audience was just spellbound,” she said. “It was more
than an hour, but felt like a few minutes.” - See more at:

Re: [meteorite-list] Weird Bounce Notices on the List

2015-02-28 Thread Galactic Stone & Ironworks via Meteorite-list
I am glad to see that I am not alone in using ancient hardware. For
me, I am just being a miser. I don't believe in scrapping something
that still works perfectly well for my needs. I don't do "gaming" and
I don't stream Netflix, so this old netbook gets by just fine with
emails and general web browsing. I'll upgrade it when it finally
dies. I am curious to see how long I can milk this netbook. I have a
column of dead pixels along the far right side of the screen and some
of the keys on the keyboard have stopped working. If any keys I
commonly use stop working, then my hand will be forced and I will buy
a new one.

I got my netbook in 2008 and I am running Windows XP (SP3)

Tommy, you have me beat by two years! And Linton had us all beat by a
mile with his 2001 Dell desktop. Funny thing is, I had that same
desktop (or close). I bought a Dell desktop back in 2001 and used it
up until I bought this netbook in 2008. The desktop ran Windows Me -
yuck!

Best regards,

MikeG

I am pretty sure this is a satirical website.

The World Weekly News was my favorite pastime while standing in the
checkout line at the supermarket. I learned plenty and I'm certain I would
not have found these important stories anywhere else:

Hitler Seen Riding a Camel by the Pyramids (with photos!)

The Amazing Bat Boy sightings

The sordid antics of The Creepy Nils Farbu

Alien Visits White House (photos with the President!)

and so on...

Beyond satire and into the realm of pure BS. Sadly, the readership votes

I used to use their articles in my class and at teacher workshops:

WWII bomber found in a lunar crater (the plane was about the size of the
100 km diameter crater)

I did a teacher workshop about observing the Moon and told them that this
would be their last chance to observe the Moon with their students as the
Moon was predicted to blow up (nuclear waste?) in less than 6 months. The
list goes on...
