Re: [meteorite-list] SPACE ROCKS MAGAZINE

2016-02-12 Thread Bigjohn Shea via Meteorite-list
Marcin,
I get what you're saying. The shipping is expensive. I agree.

But:
It's a quarterly magazine. Comes out every 3 months. Spending 33.80$ once
every 3 months averages to about 11.27$ each month. Okay so not EXACTLY 10$

I spent 14$ last night to go to a movie for just two hours of entertainment.
It may not be worth it to someone who never read the Deadpool comics but it was
worth it to me. :-)

It costs me 3.50$ a day to have the latte I like to drink most mornings. If I
do that six times a week that's 21$ a week, and 84$ a month. It may not be
worth it to someone who doesn't like coffee, but it's worth it to me.

My point is, 33.80$ is really not alot of money to pay once every three months
for a high quality magazine if you really do enjoy the content.

Hope you are doing good my friend.
Cheers,
John

Hey
I was talking with Michael and we are working on a better solution. Im ready
to be European distributor for next issue. Polish post prices are much lower
than sending each magazine from USA to Europe. I hope it will work and for
same money we could get two issues than one.

Hi,

While I take your point and understand your frustration, you've violated the
most fundamental canon of journalistic ethics by extracting a passage from a
publication which you've represented as a quote—but a quote which you've
modified.

Your gratuitous addition of the president's middle name is a point I do not
take to at all: bigotry is not welcome here.

[meteorite-list] Barack Hussein Obama Places Over 265 Million Acres Of Land Off-limits

2016-02-12 Thread Raremeteorites via Meteorite-list

Dear List Member,

Barrack Hussein Obama has added another 1.8 million acres of land to the his
running total of 265 million acres that are now completely off limits to
mineral hunting of any sort which includes meteorites.

Highlights:

"With his second term winding down, Barrack Hussein Obama has now protected
more than 265 million acres of land and water, more than any other
administration. A year ago, Obama designated much of the Angeles National
Forest as the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument."

"Concern over the long-term health of the deceptively delicate terrain
spurred Obama to designate the Mojave Trails, Sand to Snow and Castle
Mountains monuments under the 1906 Antiquities Act, which authorizes
presidents to create national monuments on federal land to protect "objects
of historic and scientific interest."

Holy Cow Adam...you're right! Heck I was moaning and whimpering when it was
$16.95. I had to now check for myself for Priority small flat rate box. I can't
believe it!! I have always preferred Priority Mail. Now to save costs you have
to go first class mail. I don't like it. Seems more of a chance for someone to
say they never received the item. Now your out the item and if they paid via
PayPal your double screwed and out that or PayPal blocks your account from you
using it until refund is made. Sorry Folks did not mean to hijack the post but
wow you aren't kidding USPS raised their prices!!

The rates went up again. It now costs $34.00 to send a USPS Flat Rate Box
international. I remember when it costs $2.80 to send a USPS Flat Rate Box
domestically just a few years ago. Like any thing the Federal Government

2016-02-12 Thread Galactic Stone & Ironworks via Meteorite-list
How much land did big private corporate developers remove from public
use last year?

Half of my area has turned from farmland to a concrete jungle (rampant
building in the last few years) and the federal government had nothing
to do with it.

I wish the Fed would step in and put the land near me off-limits so I
won't have to put up with ever increasing crime, traffic, and loss of
wildlife habitat. Build somewhere else - the locals here hate the new
development.

There are always two sides to every coin.

Hi,

While I take your point and understand your frustration, you've violated the
most fundamental canon of journalistic ethics by extracting a passage from a

modified.

Your gratuitous addition of the president's middle name is a point I do not
take to at all: bigotry is not welcome here.

Re: [meteorite-list] SPACE ROCKS MAGAZINE

2016-02-12 Thread Martin Goff via Meteorite-list
Hi all,

The problem as I see it is that Blurb are not just a distributor but
the printer too so it's not just a question of switching companies.
Blurb use different printing and distribution bases according to the
buyers location so not all copies are sent from the US. Copies Sent to
the UK seem to have been sent from the Czech Republic so not sure why
the shipping is so high for you Sergey? The shipping is certainly high
but that is out of Michael's control. All I can say is that the
magazine itself is more than worth the cost given the quality of the
product but it is a shame the shipping cost is putting some people
off.

I am more than happy to get multiple copies ordered and then bring to
Ensisheim for anyone who wants to wait rather than pay shipping. Just
let me know :-)

Just want to give a shout out to Michael Johnson who has put his heart
and soul and many many hours into this project and the end result is
truly excellent. I for one will do everything I can to help and
support him so that this grows and becomes a great resource to the
entire meteorite community. I am sure that Michael would welcome any
help from others too, be that submitting articles and photos, offers
of helping to distribute copies of the magazine or just general
support and encouragement.  The magazine is for us all and we need to
support it any way we can. Well done Michael, you've done a great job!
:-)

Cheers

Martin

[meteorite-list] Update on yesterday morning's bolide

2016-02-12 Thread Matson, Rob D. via Meteorite-list
Correction to my post yesterday: now that there are two dashcam videos of the
event
(one from Hollywood, the other from Oceanside), it is clear that the Pacific
Ocean bolide
yesterday morning was much further south. The terminal lines of sight intersect
at
30d 42.5' N, 118d 24.5' W, over 120 miles west of Baja and almost 150 miles
south of
San Clemente Island. I have a kmz file with the two camera locations and my
estimates of the terminal vectors for each if anyone is curious. --Rob

Hi Michael -- yes, it ended up in the drink. I've got it on Santa Ana radar
(KSOX) near "Fortymile Bank"
at an altitude of 11.3 km at 14:39:03 UT (6:39:03 am PST). Missed the SoCal
coast by about 70 km. :-(

Re: [meteorite-list] President Obama Places Over 265 Million Acres Of Land Off-limits

2016-02-12 Thread GREG LINDH via Meteorite-list

Our freedoms have been horribly eroded in the last few years, especially in
the last 7 years. People just let it happen and don't complain unless it
directly, and seriously affects them. It is now affecting the meteorite
hunter's ability to hunt for meteorites, and that affects us all, including the
modest collector.

This recent land grab is courtesy of California Senator Dianne Feinstein. 82

Re: [meteorite-list] President Obama Places Over 265 Million Acres Of Land Off-limits

2016-02-12 Thread Michael Mulgrew via Meteorite-list
Yup, I have written to the Feinstein camp many times over the years
in opposition of Sand to Snow, Mojave Trail, and Castle Mountains as
National Monuments. The real issues had nothing to do with
"preservation", but that's how it was spun to the general public. Of
course, who's going to argue with that?

If George Carlin taught me anything it was to never trust anything
your government tells you, ever. All you will find about these new
monuments is positive press, the truths spoken at every single public
hearing have been buried and forgotten. If you have "blm" in your
search, such as a Google search for "ca new blm land news" you won't
find a single link related to this. It's a bunch of horseshit.

This is my backyard, well it was anyway. The 4x4 groups that get
slandered in the press did more in the name of conservation and
preservation than the BLM ever did and ever will.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite-list Digest, Vol 156, Issue 16

2016-02-12 Thread Brian Cox via Meteorite-list
I am sure that nearly everyone in America and the World, unless they're a
really far rightwing Obama hating conservative, reads the FULL Name, "Barrack
Hussein Obama" that it means they're using Barrack and Hussein, as "Key Names"
as in "Hot Button" issue names, since it makes the dense slow to respond folks
think somethings along the lines of; ( you mean that black Kenyan Muslim
President that got the slippery route into office.
I'm sure Adam didn't mean for it to sound that way, but what he copied and
pasted was written to stir up that hatred and bigotry against Obama.

I know there's always the comeback of the republican candidates such as Rafael
Edwardo Cruz, to make him sound Really Hispanic and Cuban, but democrats and
the media aren't using that full given name, just Ted.

I think simply the name "Obama" lets everyone in the World know whom someone is
talking about.

I think it's a great idea to preserve land, we don't need anymore lame suburbs
with the same street names throughout like Buena Vista or Peachtree, except
with Street on one, Drive on the connecting street, Lane on the next street and
Terrace on the one 3 blocks over.

Ted Turner and another intelligent few bought up all the land they could to
preserve the beauty between Denver and Colorado Springs, to keep that area from
becoming one GIANT tract housing subdivision.

Sincerely,

Brian

I do agree that the government is terrible at administering anything,
be it a local neighborhood dog park or a national forest. BLM rules
are a mess and the enforcement is inconsistent at best.

But, one thing to remember is that government officials do not come
from another galaxy and force their way into Congress. They are the
cream of the private sector crop and we put them there. If government
sucks, it's because we keep electing people who suck. Worse, 99% of
the the choices we get to choose from also suck to roughly equal
degrees.

What do we expect when we let a bunch of CEO's, lobbyists, hedge
funders, washed out lawyers, and ego-tripped doctors run the
government? And we get a selection of idiots to pick from every four
years - some of those idiots have Ivy League credentials, and some do
not, but they all suck.

Until the masses demand competent candidates based on merit and not
charismatic fools with deep pockets, we will keep getting the same
treatment every four years.

I don't care if the president or our congresspeople are black, white,
male, female, religious, atheist, socialist, libertarian, gay,
straight, or whatever. But, I think we should demand competence.
Congressmen which no knowledge of science should not sit on committees
responsible for funding scientific projects. Presidents or congressmen
with no war-fighting experience should not be starting wars, etc. And,
by extension, BLM rangers and officials should not be making or
enforcing the rules of land management unless they have some degree of
expertise in the academic/scientific/engineering or field aspects of
the resources they govern.

So, back to meteorites and rockhounding - this is what happens when we
elect people to oversee resource-rich lands who no background or
interest in geology, forestry, or related fields. The rank and file
BLM field rangers might know their business, but they do not know the
intricacies of the entire body of federal regulations that they are
trying to interpret and enforce. The bureaucrats at the top of the
chain are so far removed from the field, that they have no expertise
with rocks, minerals, or natural resources - they are a bunch of
former lobbyists, white collars, and people who have never had their
hands dirty.

That's my two cents, actual worth may vary widely. ;)

PS - I do not think Adam intended his post as racist or Islamophobic.
People are getting a little too touchy these days. But, there is a lot
of bigotry out there, so those are the days we live in and sometimes
appearances matter more than substance. We have to be careful about
what we say, where, and how we say it - and, how other people might
interpret what we say or play semantics with our words. It sucks, but
that's how it is.

Re: [meteorite-list] SPACE ROCKS MAGAZINE

2016-02-12 Thread andries goedhart via Meteorite-list
Hi All,

I had to pay $25.39 incl. shipping and taxes so i find the $37 Sergey has to
pay really absurd. I am pretty sure my copy came from the Czech Republic as
well which is closer to Sergey's home than mine.
It is sad that Michael's great magazine might not reach it's full sale
potential in Europe due to the very high shipping rates.
I gladly payed the $25 but i can understand some people can or will not pay
almost two times the cost of the magazine for shipping.

I would like to thank Michael and his contributors for the awesome magazine
they created . I am looking forward to the next issue. I can not imagine it
being better than this one but i am sure it will be.

Just
let me know :-)

:-)

Cheers

Hi Sergey, Marcin, Zsolt, all,

Just had a thought regards your high shipping prices quoted.  Did you
change the currency to your local currency before ordering? I noticed
that in your screenshot you posted Sergey that it was in US dollars.
On the Blurb website you can change the currency and I guess that is
how the shipping is worked out in combination with your address.  Try
it and see if it makes a difference?

Cheers
