[meteorite-list] Pallasite Crystals

2017-01-10 Thread SR Brooks via Meteorite-list
Hello list, On the subject of fake pallasite crystals being tested.
If anyone has some authentic olivine peridot from a pallasite that
could be donated to the GIA the Gemological Institute of America's lab
to have tested they could find the difference between the terrestrial
and the meteoric type. They have a lab that studies and tests every
type of gemstone that exists including man-made simulants and fakes
and if they haven't already I'm sure they would love to study them and
come up with a test at no cost other than the donation.
I'm a gem cutter as well as a meteorite collector and
enthusiast and have tried to find some unshattered pieces to cut for
myself. Usually, the person trying to sell me the meteorite material
has terrestrial gem material trying to be passed off as the pallasite
olivine for a high price. Luckily because of my gemology and meteorite
knowledge, I can tell the difference although a sure fire test for
everyone would be great. If anyone has any they would like to donate
and have tested ( I'm sure they'd love to work on it ) contact the
GIA in Carlsbad, CA and maybe they can come up with a test to make it
easier to separate the two.
Also if anyone has any unshattered crystals and would
like to have some material cut I can facet the material and even work
out a trade type situation to keep it affordable if it helps. Anyway
just a thought. I may look into it myself.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite-list Digest, Vol 168, Issue 10

2017-01-10 Thread Brian Cox via Meteorite-list
Hello everybody,

Let me say a couple of things about this scoundrel in Hong Kong, and what I
think he's up to, and then the constant bashing of ebay.

Keep a watch out for the meteorites this guy bought, he's probably going to
sell them himself either through his ebay user ID, but most likely he has
another user ID he's probably going to sell them through. He also may be
working with someone who will sell them either on their own website or maybe
ebay.

Think about it, it makes no sense this guy would buy a meteorite and then burn
his bridges to the people he bought the meteorites from who supplied them, so
to speak, by making the sellers look bad by purposely leaving negative feedback
to make them look bad to keep buyers away.

He most likely did this in the hopes that potential buyers would shy away from
the sellers he defamed and not buy from them.

He's probably planning on selling them and getting the business from buyers
that he Thinks he has fooled into not buying from the sellers he has tried to
condemn with the negative feedback.

Let's all work together to look for these meteorites being sold in the future
if we can get all the seller's help.
If all the sellers would all post the names of the meteorites and dimensions
and weight, and if possible links to the photos would be great.

If we can all see or have information about the meteorites he bought then this
would help everyone in the meteorite community so that no one buys these
meteorites from him or any people he's working with, so we can prevent him from
making any money from his scamming and lying.

Now, onto the ebay concern, many of us don't have a website, like you Mike F
and you Mike G, Anne, etc., and for now ebay suits me fine. Yes, there are
scammers on ebay, But with tens of Millions of people on it daily buying and
selling from around the world, it's a small price to pay for 24/7 exposure and
new customers and cross collectors that happen upon buying their first
meteorite, when they were looking for something else.

I bought my first meteorites in the early 2000s on ebay from now well known
long time dealers when I was looking for my usual favorites at the time, such
as mineral specimens and rocks, coins and collectible jewelry, when I got
excited and came across cross-sellers who sold meteorites and rocks and coins
at the time.

It's also fun as a buyer, and even though Ebay is Not perfect, as folks have
stated here, but as Ruben said, ebay does realize there are a$$holes, scammers
and thieves that pull bizarre and hateful crap like unnecessary negative
feedback, and Ebay will and does remove it if you are willing to take the time
on the phone to go through the same amount of time you would when calling
Amazon or Walmart or Macy's or whatever other business you have to call to
solve a problem.

Now, granted its different as a seller, but I've found ebay has grown up over
the years, even though some folks talk like its archaic, but per Ruben's story
and John Humphries and even the posts Dave Cox shares on Facebook about the
hassles he gets, they do recognize honest sellers that have imbeciles causing
trouble and they will fix a problem such as this troublemaker.

Everyone have a great day, and may a large and rare Meteorite land safely in
your yard.

Brian

Re: [meteorite-list] Another eBay JERK - Block him!

2017-01-10 Thread Galactic Stone & Ironworks via Meteorite-list
Hi Doug,

You raise some very good points. eBay is not a total loss yet. There
is hope. There are many good reputable dealers on eBay and I am sure
some of them are doing pretty well. It takes a lot of hard work and
great customer service to stand apart from the growing clutter of
fakes and misrepresentations that are spreading on eBay.

eBay is at fault for the current atmosphere in their marketplace. Two
things are clearly wrong and need to be corrected :

1) Sellers should be allowed to leave negative or neutral feedbacks
for buyers. When eBay took away a seller's ability to leave anything
but positive feedbacks, it sent a clear signal to bad buyers. And that
signal is a green light to ramp up their frauds. In the past, a buyer
could get hit with a negative feedback and other sellers could see the
red flags and proceed with caution. Now sellers have little way to
determine if a particular buyer is risky or not. Thankfully, people
like Ruben, John, and others help spread the word outside of eBay, so
other sellers can block these criminal buyers.

2) eBay needs to do a much better job of listening to fraud reports.
The meteorite community has always been very good at self-policing.
There is the IMCA which is a first line of defense, and then there are
venues like this Met-List and Facebook where bad buyers and fraudulent
listings can be announced before the public. I cannot count the number
of times that Mendy or myself have reported fake meteorite listings to
eBay and we have been ignored. I know of a few cases where certain
fraudulent sellers were reported multiple times by multiple members
and yet eBay did absolutely nothing.

I suspect that #2 is a product of ignorance on eBay's part and a lack
of willingness to spend money to hire "experts" to police their
listings or weigh the validity of fraud reports. I guess it would be
easy for a vindictive seller to report the competition as being a
scammer in an effort to eliminate honest competition. I would like to
think that none of us would do that, but apparently that kind of thing
does happen. eBay has no way of determining what a legit meteorite is,
so they err on the side of profit by ignoring the vast majority of
reported frauds. For every auction that take down, they lose possible
final value fees on a sale.

I can say that David Butland is an honorable guy and his auction site
Howardites.com is legit. It is a shame that very few sellers have
tried it out because it's good software, easy to use, and it's FREE.
David has offered a free service to the meteorite community and the
majority of the meteorite community has ignored it in favor of a
soulless corporate giant that abuses it's sellers and engages in
criminal activity by aiding and abetting fraud - and charges you fees
for the privilege of getting ripped off. To each their own I guess.

I miss the good old days on eBay and would love to see them return. I
am rooting for eBay to get it's act together. But I won't hold my
breath waiting for it to happen.

Best regards,

MikeG

Thank you very much and I am sorry this is not meteorite related.

Re: [meteorite-list] Another eBay JERK - Block him!

2017-01-10 Thread MexicoDoug via Meteorite-list
Keep the faith Ruben. If you can compete and do well on eBay over the long
term, it is likely that you have a good product at a good price that appeals to
a large segment. In this you do a service to the other dealers by getting new
collector recruits all the time ... kudos to all you meteorite eBayers for
that! I sincerely hope you and everyone burned by this Hong Kong Post scam
artist get compensated. EBay sounds weak in fraud protection but it is hard to
ignore the Chinese market for a seller.

Perhaps the best bet is to set a feedback requirement. It looks like the scam
artist in question has a feedback of only (5). Let us know if eBay catches on
to them and eventually makes amends after recognizing the scammer for what they
are. I get the feeling the case is not yet resolved and to be fair to eBay if
they do something positive that should be posted for readers to understand
whether it was only aggravation or also the lo$$ stuck.

The alternative is to block any bidder located where tracking is interrupted/or
seller protection does not apply. Sometime I think we are an overly optimistic
bunch and so enthusiastic we take risks, banking on every Internet contact
being a good, honest person.

Another auction website, like the one that was posted a year ago for free use
to the list, got the cold shoulder here from what I saw, only because everyone
was honest that used eBay and considered the glass at eBay half full when the
question was posed as going to a new auction site. (and perhaps wanting to
avoid yet another brokering site).

EBay may have its issues, but not been a year I've been in Tucson, have I not
heard grumbling somewhere that bad apples, thieves, or scammers don't appear
there, too. On eBay, it is a double whammy, lost of common sense control, and
usually razor thin margins plus paying commission like having the door hit you
on the butt on the way out of a loss. That's the faith or give up part!

I haven't been on eBay in so many years I need to try it out again, I actually
started missing it reading this! I know plenty of other reputable dealers that
do well but no one bats 1000 ... though it can be years till they get that bad
apple, it is one person and the exception is not a reason to forsake a big
convenient marketing platform.

Unfortunately the occasional collector isn't about to make an entire website
to sell a few collection pieces probably to turn around and get new ones
anyways with the sales... So while eBay is not always good for specialty
meteorites niches perhaps sophisticated collection pieces, where the risks are
magnified and you need a learned audience of more than one interested. There
is something to be said about sellers having reputable buyers too and people
that certainly ! Just random thoughts and commiserations

Cheers
Doug

Greetings List!

OK, not actually meteorites, but space-flown, reentry surviving, groovy
specimens to be sure!  I will be offering bits and pieces of some of the most
historic U.S. Manned Space Vehicles available anywhere!

I have been a collector of space program artifacts for over 35 years and have
amassed quite a collection of interesting stuff.  In all those years, I have
only met a grand total of two meteorite collectors who were not interested in
this material.  I have been putting together a nice selection of these
artifacts and will be making them available to this community during the first
week of the Tucson show.  Here is a small cross section of what I will have:

Space Shuttle Orbiters- specimens of HRSI thermal protection tile fragments,
all flown and removed due to damage sustained on operational missions.  All 5
orbiters represented!  All come with copies of NASA disposal paperwork and
scrap tags!  I have individual pieces and sets representing all 5 ships!  NOTE:
Purchasers must be US citizens to buy this material.  Sorry, its the law!
Everything here is on the up-and-up.

I will also have an interesting assortment of early sub-orbital spacecraft
parts including the V-2 Rocket and many others.  These specimens are available
to all!  I will have a wide variety of goodies with me for sale and for trade.

I have been out of the meteorite business for quite some time now due to other
responsibilities.  I have not been to the Tucson show since 2001!  (I was a
meteorite dealer and a buyer for the California State University Geological
Sciences Departments)  I have done business with many of you and have been a
"lurking" member of the list for many years.  I look forward to rekindling some
old friendships!  I will be mobile at the show and plan on visiting every
meteorite dealer.

Anyone with an interest in my material please drop me a line at
meteorf...@aol.com and I will send a few images of the type of material I am
offering.  I will be happy to arrange meetings at your convenience!

I am so damn excited about returning to Tucson I am at a loss for words!!

See you there

Ebay is like one of those neighborhoods that used to be charming and quirky,
but then started a slow slide into being not so nice any more, as the sellers

apparent. The local antiques store has been replaced by a pawn shop, and the
bodega has sketchy looking characters hanging out front trying to sell you
junk. Now you want to walk through quickly, with one hand on your wallet and a
weather eye out.

Best!

Hi Ruben,

Thanks for the compliment, although I am sure Mike and Anne don't want
me lumped in with them. LOL.

I really hope that eBay can turn itself around and get going in the
right direction again. I miss the good old days, but it seems that
sellers are abandoning eBay left and right. I have noticed that
several major dealers have stopped selling there or curtailed their
selling greatly.

Most of my sales are low-dollar micromounts sold to budget-minded
collectors, so my risk on eBay would be minimal as a seller. But I can
understand why guys like Mike Farmer have stopped selling there - it's
just too risky to sell a specimen that is worth thousands of dollars
and then get ripped off by a crooked buyer.

I have been advising sellers for years now to stop relying on eBay for
sales and get their own websites. In response, I often hear something
along the lines of - "But, eBay has the most exposure and it puts my
items in front of millions of people". I do not think that is true in
most cases. Most buyers on eBay are not looking for meteorites. They
are looking for electronics, computer accessories, cellphones, video
games, cheap gadgets, and clothing. I would list an item on eBay and
promote the listing widely on social media, and I would get maybe
30-50 item views on a 7-day auction. In that same period of time, I
can get 100-200 item views on my website. So I just don't see the same
value in being a seller on eBay as I used to years ago.

Once eBay gets done running off all of the small sellers, all that
will be left is big corporate players, and the resellers of cheap
Chinese junk. It is slowly losing it's charm and character that once
gave it a flea market or garage sale type of feel.

It's a shame, but I see it getting a lot worse before it gets better.

Best regards and good luck,

MikeG

[meteorite-list] Man Made Meteorites at Tucson

2017-01-10 Thread Greg Frazier via Meteorite-list
