Hello

For some unknown reason, I don't receive a notification either through the
Meteorite-List or the IMCA either. So I book-marked the site and I go there
directly.

Try this link:http://www.tucsonmeteorites.com/mpodmain.asp

I see there 3 people watching it right now, one in Germany, one in Morocco, and
me.

Re: [meteorite-list] STICKY TAPES

2018-07-09 Thread Bob Falls via Meteorite-list
Hi All,

A better alternative to Goo Bone is "Bestine". It will remove virtually all
adhesives, is not petroleum based, leaves no residue as Goo Gone has a tendency
to.
This product is "flammable" however have never had problemwould keep open
flame away!!
If will also not have any effect on labels or printed material it comes in
contact with. This product is designed as a rubber cement thinner however has
been used in the graphics and art field for decades to remove sticky tape
residue.
Amazon link for product reference;
https://www.amazon.com/BESTINE-Solvent-Thinner-Rubber-Cement/dp/B004O7HM38

I was introduced to it many years ago working in an art department and
originally used it to clean stickers and labels from collectable record covers
and it had no effect on the artwork!!

You should be able to purchase at most art supply stores.

Bob

Yes Michael - it does say Citrus solvent.
However, it Does contain Petroleum distillates and is flammable. Also, stinks
and is recommened to be used in a well ventilated area. It does work though.

If tapes, labels, “sticky” residues are a problem you must remove, go get GOO
GONE, citrus based.

What a list below!!

I would add Sariçiçek, observed fall, very fresh with excellent glassy crust
and most pieces exhibiting flow lines and orientation.

Also, great idea to make a list of "obtainable" meteorites for the new

I thought this would make a great topic of discussion for the MetList as
well. Here is a list I found online many years ago. I certainly do not agree
on some of these meteorites, but what would you recommend to add or remove?

This list is 60 meteorites, I’ll filter through all responses and see where
we end up. I'm not stuck on 60, could be 50 or it could be 100. Please do
not recommend meteorites that are unobtainium. If you could explain your
choice that would be a great benefit.

Hi Mike,

Very interesting concept! I am in total agreement that viewing and
understanding thin sections is a wonderful pursuit.

Couple of questions:
-will the PetroViewer accept a standard 1"x2" thin section or is the
"PetroViewer" thin section part of the viewer.
-what is the light source
-can you add some individual photos of the PetroViewer to the web site

Subject: [meteorite-list] Announcing, PetroViewer!

Dear List Members --

Don't you love those photos of thin sections, with all the dazzling colors,
and the definitive chondrule shapes and all? And the cost of a single
section is often right in line with the cost of a nice meteorite slice for
my collection cabinet. So why don't I buy them?

I lack a scope to examine them with! And the scopes I've seen on ebay leave
me wondering, how functional is "vintage"? Am I ready to gamble
$600 to $1,000 or more, plus another hundred for a nice thin section, to see
if I am ready to go that way?

Then I had an opportunity to examine a thin section under polarizers.
Wow. Still pictures don't begin to reflect the fascinating effects when
polarized light meets birefringent crystals! You don't have to be a
geologist to recognize there's magic in them thar rocks!

I was determined to find a way to share that with folks who haven't made the
commitment to invest in a scope, and develop an expanded collection of thin
sections. I fiddled around for two years, and the PetroViewer is the
outcome.

I believe my market is the meteorite enthusiast, or the rock hound, who has
read about thin sections, seen the pictures, and still harbors a curiosity
to check them out. In fact, I would take it as the greatest of successes if
someone who experienced thin sections through a PetroViewer was bitten by
the same excitement I felt, and proceeded to buy a real scope, and delve
into all the petrology and mineralogy that thrives around thin sections.

So today, I introduce a rather modest web site featuring the
PetroViewer. PetroViewer.com

I invite your comments, and suggestions, either on or off line, or via the
Contact Us page of the site. I have found it challenging to keep my focus
on providing users an economical way to experience much of the fascinating
phenomena, rather than try to share all the other aspects of meteorites that
I love. I'm certainly open to hearing list member's reactions.

Thanks for any thoughts you might care to share.

2016-07-05 Thread Bob Falls via Meteorite-list
Hi E.T. and all,

Very interesting that you collect marbles; I do not have any marbles to
trade however find it very interesting that most meteorite collectors do
have separate very unrelated collections.

Along with collecting meteorites I am a music collector. This started back
in the 60's with records (vinyl) and then migrated into CD's. I still have
most of the original vinyl collection and still search for out of print CD's
along with new music to add to the collection. The collection is diverse in
types of music however mainly focuses on blues, classic rock and jazz.

There is a link between the collections; I listen to music while either
working on new specimens, cataloging new acquisitions or viewing thin
sections!!

Very interesting hearing from others on their "non-meteorite" collections.

Best Regards,
Bob Falls

Subject: [meteorite-list] Possible meteorite trades

Hello to all list members,
I am reaching out to the farthest corners of the known world to appeal to
any and all collectors.
Having dealt in and collected meteorites, tektites and related books since
I was just a kid, collecting all kinds of rocks which included a few
cherished meteorites as early as the age of six, life has been blessed with
lots of treasured finds. By the age of nine my parents allowed me to go off
on summer long geology exploring science camp trips with older kids. For
three years this was how I spent my summers, digging in fossil beds and
agate beds all across the Northwest, areas that have been closed to this
sort of activity since the mid to late sixties. At age seven I joined the
Oregon Archaeological Society and at age fourteen I was given the privilege
of being a dig site foreman for a Scappoose Indian housing and burial site
before it was built into the now dismantled Trojan Nuclear Energy Power
Plant along the banks of the mighty Columbia river near my home here in
Oregon. Over time, life has changed and my interests have changed with the
exception of a few common threads. One of them being that rocks from Space
are the coolest of all rocks!
Many of you know that from 1987 until 2002 I displayed and sold meteorites,
fossils and artifacts at roughly 48 gem and mineral shows each year around
the western United States.
During those wonderful years of travel both here and abroad, I had the joy
and pleasure (and still do) of meeting collectors and seeing their amazing
collections. What I have seen and I am sure that many of you can relate to
this, is that most of us who collect rocks from Space, also collect other
things. I have seen a collection of antique surfboards, a huge collection of
ancient suits of armor, cannons, guns, diamonds, polished stone spheres,
stamps, coins (I think coins are how Michael Casper made his fortune! Good
for him!). I've seen amazing collections of fossils, minerals and gem stones
in private homes and on and on.
Long story made shorter, I stopped collecting these beloved meteorites when
I formally started selling them back in 87'. I have learned that this might
have been a huge mistake but it's the choice I felt I needed to make in
order to pay the bills and to remain competitive in an ever shrinking world
market. But, the collecting bug never went away, it just changed shape and
theme.

Here is the pitch; about 1990 I started collecting antique handmade glass
marbles. These gorgeous, colorful treasures were made by glass workers in
the Lauscha region of East Germany from approximately 1880 until 1920. They
are rare and hard to find. I have amassed a large collection and yet am
always searching for more. I would be delighted to trade meteorites,
tektites or books, even art, rare wine or cashy money for any number of
these marbles.
If you are a marble collector then I would enjoy talking with you about
your collection and collecting direction. Recently Patrick got infected by
this same obsession and he is an avid collector of the more recent machine
made marbles from as early as the 1920's and 30's and later. If you just
want to talk marbles please drop me a line. If you know someone with marbles
to sell or if you have some yourself, please give me a chance to make an
offer.

On a less selfish thread, I think it would be a lot of fun to read about
the things that others collect. I recall the first time I met Mike Bandli in
Tucson years ago he was dealing in Space surplus and he had a huge
collection of super cool artifacts. I learned at this last Tucson show that
John Kashuba and I have nearly matching collections of rare, old wines. Hey,
there is a meteorite collector in New York who collects live scorpions! And
who hasn't seen Bruce Wegman's digital watch collection?

Come on folks, share the fun!

 Best regards, E.T.

Dear Meteorite Friends,

I am proud to announce the Grand Opening of a very special display in the
Peabody Museum at Yale University! My loan of the main mass of lunar
meteorite Northwest Africa 5000 (NWA 5000), combined with an ancient clay
tablet from the Yale Babylonian Collection (MLC 1880 - 'Velocity of the
Moon'), is sure to amaze and thrill the public throughout the year. In
addition to these authentic specimens, there is a full size painted replica
of NWA 5000 to compliment the display and offer a glimpse of what the uncut
mass looked like before sharing samples with the world.

I would like to thank everyone involved who helped make this special
occasion possible. Without the dedication and enthusiasm from these
professionals I would not have been able to share such a marvel of nature!

The display is scheduled to run through November 30, 2016. Please share in
my excitement by viewing a few images I present here:

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite or Space related license plates

2016-01-02 Thread Bob Falls via Meteorite-list
Hi John,

I agree regarding calling attention to your vehicle; even if you do not
leave anything in it for the taking it may still end up with a window
repair:-)

We have thought about getting personalized plates however have held off.
However I do enjoy seeing the ones that have been mentioned!!

Will be looking for them in Tucson in a few weeks.

Happy New Year,

Bob Falls

I've thought about this over the years as to what tag to get. I don't want
to call attention to my SUV that it it might be carrying meteorites,
especially at shows.

I pondered getting FIREBALL but I didn't want it to be an omen and have my
vehicle go up in smoke!

Hi Linton,

Great description of what must have been spectacular to witness in person!! We
should all be so lucky to witness such a fireball; until then we have your
wonderful account of your experience.

A year ago tonight, my wife and I witnessed a dazzling fireball here in
Torrey. I posted a report here, and noted that a few in the SLC area had
seen it heading this way. I've expanded on it a bit for a stargazing column
I've been writing for our little local paper. I'll post it below, just for
fun. I'd love to hear more from others who saw it.

Insider Stargazing Tips

Brilliant Utah fireball – October 2, 2014, revisited

I’ve spent a lot of hours outside, on a lot of nights, over many years,
looking at the sky at all hours of the night. Over those years I’ve seen
hundreds, if not thousands of meteors. Some were bright and some were dim,
but they’re always a joy to see. After I began collecting meteorites and
learning more about them, the meteor sightings became even more enjoyable.
There’s something fascinating about holding a piece of space in your hand.
But as I read stories about fireball sightings, or sometimes watched online
videos, I always felt a little envious. I needed to see one myself.
Finally, on October 2 of last year, my time came. It was truly amazing!
I shared it with friends at the time, but I wasn’t yet writing this column.
So though my words cannot do it justice, I’ll attempt to recount the
experience now - on its anniversary - so that you might envision the
spectacular event.
I had gotten up at 4:00 and was lying there, about to fall back to
sleep, when my wife Karen started shouting “LOOK!” When I opened my eyes,
the entire sky out our ample, northeast-facing windows was dazzling white!
The pinon and juniper trees were lit up like it was noon. A moment later, a
large, white, slow-moving fireball came into view at the top of our windows.
I estimated it to be at least half the diameter of the moon and it had a
long trail behind it. Karen described the tail as having an “electric
blue-green tint”. It may have just looked white to me because my pupils hadn’t
adjusted yet. Then it morphed into an orange fireball, with undulating
flames trailing out perhaps 3 degrees (six full moon widths) behind it! A
few small chunks fell from it, but for the most part, it remained intact
until it cooled into dark flight, which means the atmospheric friction had
slowed it down enough that it no longer glowed. The whole show lasted about
5 or 10 magical seconds, which will remain burned into my memory forever.
I usually compare bright meteors to Venus, but this one was more like
the sun! It was traveling from N/NW to E/SE and descending at about a 5 to
10 degree angle. It appeared to be right over the northern end of Capitol
Reef N.P., but was probably much further away... possibly over toward Moab
or even western Colorado. In fact, when I filed my report, I saw that a few
people way over in central Colorado had seen it, too. A couple early morning
astronomers in Salt Lake City reported seeing it heading our way. And I did
hear from a couple other local residents who also witnessed the spectacle,
but would love to know if anyone in Hanksville did. Or Bluff, Blanding, and
so on.
One thing that really amazes me is this: the farther away it actually
was, the more massive it must have been to appear so large from here! Most
‘shooting stars’ we see are only the size of a grain of sand, or perhaps a
pea, and they burn up long before they could ever reach the ground. Not this
one!
It took quite a while for us to calm down enough to get back to sleep.
Early in the morning, I wrote up the story and posted it to meteorite and
astronomy forums. I hoped that some of my meteorite hunting friends would
spring into action and start tracking it down. But another fireball in
northern Arizona – visible in mid-day – was reported that afternoon, and all
the attention turned to it. So somewhere out there, in the southeast corner
of Utah by my reckoning, lies one or more rocks from space, still waiting to
be found.

[meteorite-list] Trego County Historical Society (Kansas) Small Stolen Iron Meteorite

2014-06-28 Thread Bob Falls via Meteorite-list
Hi Everyone,

I was contacted this morning by the Trego County Historical Society located
in Kansas regarding a small iron meteorite that was stolen from their
collection yesterday.

This is what was sent:
On Friday, June 27th, a small metal meteorite was stolen from our museum. It
was about 4 inches in diameter and weighed about 3 lbs. We do not have a
picture. If anyone should contact you about a small meteorite, would you
please contact the Trego County Historical Society in WaKeeney, Kansas.
Thank you for your time. We would appreciate any assistance

Contact Information:
Marjean Deines
Associate Director
Trego County Historical Society
WaKeeney, Kansas 67672

email - tregohistori...@ruraltel.net

The only other information is that it was found along the Smoky River Basin
(in Kansas) and was probably found in the 1980’s.  They had received it as a
donation too their Historical Society and had not yet cataloged and
photographed the case it was in.

Let's be on the lookout and if you see or are offered something that fits
this description please contact them.  I know that without a picture or
specific type it will be hard to identify.

If I receive any additional information I will pass it along.

Best Regards,

Bob Falls
