Re: [meteorite-list] Hit by a meteorite lately?
Generally speaking, I am *extremely* suspicious about the claims of people being hit by meteorites. That story about a man in Sweden losing an arm over it is suspiciously similar to a Chinese woman suffering a similar fate in 1915. A man supposedly died from one in Barbotan in 1790. Another claim from the Middle Ages is that two prior were killed by meteorites a century apart. Gerat Blank, a German teen, pretended to be hit by one in 2007. The list, as you say, goes on. Not to say it didn't happen but I would prefer to see some documentation first. Andre From: Sterling K. Webb [sterling_k_w...@sbcglobal.net] Sent: August 13, 2015 12:23 AM To: Deborah Anne K. Martin Subject: RE: [meteorite-list] Hit by a meteorite lately? Hi, Andre, List, There are a number of cases documented of individuals being struck by meteorites, going back centuries. A fellow in Sweden lost an arm to one! John S. Lewis' Rain of Iron and Ice (1996) has a long section listing hundreds of such cases. In the Uganda case, the meteorite bounced off, not leaves, but the trunks of several trees before it struck the boy. Lucky boy. Mrs. Hodges was inside her house in an padded armchair when the meteorite battered its way through chimney, roof, attic, ceiling, and several walls before lodging in the side of her chair. She was NOT directly struck, which is very fortunate for her A meteorite that stagnates and free-falls is usually going 200-300 mph when it reaches the ground. If it doesn't stagnate, it's going even faster. This is according to Norton's book. If you see one coming, put on your hard hat. Re: [meteorite-list] Death by Meteorite!
I have been reading about cases like these. Another claim in China was a rain of meteorites that killed thousands but the year of the event varies between 1321 and 1361 ! Another, also in China, claims a woman lost an arm to a meteorite in 1915. A man supposedly died when the Barbotan meteorite struck in France in 1790. And so on. And yes, Tunguska would have been devastating to a city...and it came within 4 hours and 47 minutes from exploding over St. Petersburg ! You can imagine the level of destruction if that meteorite had been delayed by nearly 5 hours ! The article forgot about the Mbale meteorite; a young boy was struck on the head by a 3 gr. fragment that had been slowed down by leaves of a banana tree. Unlike Ann Hodges, he was not injured. All in all, I take these claims of injuries and death to both humans and animals with a huge grain of salt unless there is solid documentation to back it up. Supposedly, tens of thousands of people were killed during the ChÃing-yang meteorite shower in the Shansi province of China between April and May of 1490. Modern researchers are generally skeptical about the number of fatalities, which cannot be corroborated among the multiple records of this event, but the figure is consistent with what we might expect had the well-documented Tunguska event of 1908 occurred over a densely populated urban area. Researchers are skeptical of other deaths attributed to meteorites, such as the death of a Franciscan friar in 1633, the deaths of two sailors in the Indian Ocean in 1647, and the death of an Indiana man in his bed in 1879. The 1800s were a time of elaborate hoaxes staged for maximum press coverage, so researchers take a dim view of most spectacular accounts from the 19th century where no other people geographically nearby seem to have observed anything out of the ordinary, such as in this next story. On March 10, 1897, in Martinsville, West Virginia, a meteor exploded over the town. Far from an expert here and a very small fry as a collector but two things: 1. The few times I bought meteorites were from established, honest dealers (bought one from Mike Farmer for instance). It never ceases to amaze me how gullible people can be, not that it excuses the scammers. 2. Since eBay won't budge, how about going media ? CNN, various national newspapers, etc. Perhaps eBay can be embarassed to do the right thing however reluctantly... This can be done by going to the flake's ebay feedback list where the buyer username and what they bought is clearly indicated. I believe Ebay has an anti-spam trigger that limits multiple messages to 10 or so per day per user. As I indicated before, ebay has no interest whatsoever in reaching out to the victims of this injustice. In fact they did not boot him completely off ebay, he is still selling other items like silver bars (are they real, who knows?). People should contact ebay and demand he be removed altogether. Do you think they will listen? His last rock sales were the first week of May so the bulk of his over 1000 sales are past the 45 day ebay protection window. Some of the victims may be able to get paypal or their credit card company to do something. By the way, most of the time he was starting the sales at a 1 penny auction and ending at very low prices relative to the large size of the rock (the one I got was at minimum 20-25 mg), which also was a tip off to me. More specifics: steelhorse1994 sold his fake moon and mars displays from about October 2011 to early May 2012. However, as best I can tell for about a year before that (starting in October 2010 to Oct. 2011) under a DIFFERENT username: spaceterrain4sale he was selling them. He still has an ebay store but no items under that name and the feedback can be viewed. And yes, at that time he was also selling deed titles to land on the moon and mars and that dates back to Feb 2010. My theory is he got in hot water with ebay about the deed title thing in Oct 2011 and that's why he switched names and then only sold the rocks. It's so despicable! I had already tried to get ebay to kick the guy off back in March based on the bogus American Meteorite Collectors Society thing on his displays, but they did not act. So, a lot of thanks go out to Dr. Korotev who was willing to take the time to analyze the rock I sent him and provide the hard science evidence. [meteorite-list] Could we get back to the science of meteorites, please ?
Hello all, I usually stay away from these protracted discussions and am quite happy to lurk on the list. A lot of good, qualified people discussing a topic I truly enjoy: meteorites. Now, I am not interested in sparring with anyone. I just published an article in the Montreal Gazette debunking UFOs; you could substitute UFOS for anything else in the ever widening field of pseudoscience and my article would remain essentially the same. So anyone eager for my views can readily look the article up. However, my computer has recently been invaded by an avalanche of emails from this list that has *nothing* to do with meteorites or science. The basic problem is that pseudoscience is like a religion; no amount of science will ever convince its proponents. So I usually don't bother; ignorance is bliss, as they say. So those who believe in dowsing, divining rods and whatever other contraption, feel free to search with them. Think you can find meteorites, gold, diamonds, water, Jimmy Hoffa with a stick ? Go for it ! That is your business; I'm just not interested. So, could we get back to the science of meteorites, please ? [meteorite-list] Need free Lunar micro
Good day all, I received a rather unusual phone call at work (I work in a planetarium) yesterday: a 10 year old boy suffered a unspecified family trauma and getting him to speak (mother tongue is French) is practically impossible. However, a writer and social activist, the lady who called, seems to be slowly getting through. He has asked her for a moon rock and she called expecting that moon rocks were plentiful and cheap; she quickly became disabused of the notion. Since we do sell meteorites, I suggested a small one which she is willing to pay out of her own pocket. I have to write a short note as an astronomer certifying it is a rock from space. Then I thought of this group: would someone be willing to donate a lunar micro to the cause ? That would be greatly appreciated. Please contact me off-list if interested.
