Re: [meteorite-list] Sutter's Mill Update - TKW now 937.75g (SM74 added)

2012-10-10 Thread Dave Johnson
Do we have any news regarding new Sutter's Mill finds? The weather here in
Northern California is cool now; perfect for hunting. I'm headed back out and
was hoping to get an update from someone.

Do we know the coordinates for the 27.5 g find? How about the verification of
the 205 g find?

See you out there, Ed!

 Hello list members,

It is getting hot in Coloma! Thirty four days in the area and not one
meteorite have I found. Have been investing most of the time in what should
be the large end of the strewn field. Thirty four days and I have yet to see
a rattlesnake. I enjoy snakes so this is a huge disappointment. I bought a
go-pro camera just so I can video a snake in the wild. They have caught over
twenty baby rattlesnakes by the river in the campground where I am staying
but I haven't seen any of those either. Lots of turkeys, lizards, coyotes,
foxes, toads and bullfrogs. A few bobcats but no cougars yet. Did get to see
a huge king snake but I hadn't figured out how to use the camera yet. It was
good hunting weather this past week but is getting hot again. Hot days I only
hunt until 1pm. Am getting about 7 to 8 hours a day out hiking. Am meeting
lots of great people here and have looked at a lot of very nice stones. a
number of stones are being found by locals on there own land. The more people
 talk
  t
he more I learn about how many stones are not being documented. I got to
identify Sammy's 27.5 gram stone a few days ago. She was quite tickled when I
told her she had the real thing. I would love to find a few of these little
gems but feel that the time is better spent trying to find the 'big one'.
Regardless of the heat, ticks, poison oak, star thistle, cockleburs,
mosquitoes and invisible rattlesnakes for which I come prepared with snake
stick, camera and gaiters, it is a blast to be back in the field. Last years
back surgery really did the trick and now am able to walk pain free from sun
up to sundown. When I finally find a stone I will post a picture. For now
it's just great to be out in the sun. Still raining in Oregon.

 Cheers,

 Edwin

Re: [meteorite-list] Sutter's Mill Update (Big 205g stone?)

2012-06-20 Thread Dave Johnson
Michael,
Thanks for the update. I am suspicious about a 205g stone.
I've taken a couple of weeks off hunting due to obligations and oppressive
heat, but hope to get back soon.

 Hi Folks,

It's been a while since the last Sutter's Mill update, so let's take a
look at where things stand as of this writing.

The official page (http://asima.seti.org/sm/) has not been updated
recently, but you may notice there are several SM numbers that are not
listed - these are finds that have been reported, but lack coordinates
or verification. Dr. Jenniskens probably has his hands full, so I
expect we will see an update eventually when his schedule allows.

In the meantime, I have been fielding reports and keeping the
 unofficial page updated.

The unofficial TKW now stands at - 560.76 grams.

The largest verified find is still Robert Ward's 42.4g specimen.

The total number of finds is - 68.

Some of you may have heard about the big 205g stone which was
reportedly found in mid-May and has not been officially reported.
This stone has been shopped around via email, and there are some
photos of the stone out there floating around. The photos make the
specimen look like a legit find, but of course there is no way to tell
 by using photos alone.

My question is, has any qualified person on this List seen this stone
in person? Can anyone reading this verify that the find is legit? I
find it hard to believe that a find like this (if it is real) has been
known since mid-May and nobody has seen it first-hand to confirm or
deny it. Surely someone with experience must have seen it by now?
Please reply or contact me off-list if you have any hard info on this
 stone.

 Unofficial Sutter's Mill page - http://www.galactic-stone.com/pages/lotus

To those still hunting - good luck!

RE: [meteorite-list] Park Forest meteor?

2005-04-04 Thread Dave Johnson
I saw the fireball as I was driving home from work. The sky
lit up and then got even brighter, and a few seconds later I
saw the fireball about 1 second before it burned out. I was
about 25 or 30 miles away from Park Forest at the time. I
have my observation, with a map and a sketch of what I saw,
on my webpage:

Nice presentation Mark,

I'd just like to add that with a peak visual magnitude of
-22 everyone within, I'm guessing, 20 or 30 miles? only
witnessed the effect of night literally turning to day. Does
anyone have an idea just how far away from ground zero you'd
have to have been to see the meteor itself?

Thanks,

Bill

RE: [meteorite-list] DOD Satellites Detect March 2003 Bolide Over Park Forest

2003-07-09 Thread Dave Johnson
Hello Al and list,

If the meteor did extinguish below 7000 feet as my
observation and the NWS data suggest (fireball seen below
the cloud deck and the NWS stated that the cloud deck base
height was 7000 feet at that time), then a very low
retardation point would not be out of the question.

Hi Mike and all,

Michael Farmer wrote:

Yes, and is not Chicago called The Windy City ?

All though it is windy in Chicago from the lake, the term
comes from politics as there
are a lot of windy candidates.

Besides winds perhaps the break up might have had some
something to do with fragments
found. There is a retardation point that scientists speak
up where an item can almost
come to a stop while falling from the pressure in front.
Perhaps we had a very low
point of retardation.

RE: [meteorite-list] Need help naming new group

2003-06-19 Thread Dave Johnson
I guess you are never too old to learn. This greatly
narrows down the
choice of terms in naming this new group. Jeff may have
won with the
HED-clan peridotite which someday may be called a Vesta
peridotite.
This is much clearer than the term Olivine Diogenite.

Perhaps just as a slightly cleaner version, might using
HED-group peridotite rather than HED-clan peridotite be
a bit better?
