Re: [meteorite-list] Fw: PVC death trap
G'Day Sonny and List I appreciate that update Sonny, I did not know that this was the norm. PVC can become very destructive if not used accordingly. Even though you cap it, if it's not glued, the caps can be removed. I like Yanan's suggestion on those already in place. But I find PVC pipes as an indicator to claim coordinates a poor use, they are flexible, very hard to drive into the ground. Yes, maybe they're easy to see from a distance being white, but there must be an alternative. I'd hate to see any legitimate prospector's claim be torn down because of this issue. There's lots of alternatives... Treated stakes, they last a long time, they're solid, a little bit of paint (red, white blue) or maybe just alternate your colors to your claim. It would solve a lot of problems. But everybody using white PVC does not solve the problem, but hey there's no problems only solutions. Alternative markers as I said earlier, treated posts 2 inches, hammered into the ground with some color coding. Your choice. I respect the miners, I respect their claims. I'm not going to pull out a PVC pipe because it's not covered; because it initially was but some less fortunate person has decided to remove the cover, for what means, I don't know. But claim markers are important. I'm fond of all parties living on this earth, be it birds, bacteria, plant life, the good old homosapien. There's enough room to live harmoniously as long as we think. Sometimes we obliverate the miniscule. Birds have every right to live on this planet, they play an important part. They transport seeds to other continents either on their feathers or through their droppings. It's a never ending ecological cycle. We then have those that are inclined to live within their confinements that don't migrate. Those are the ones that we should be concerned about. I I think this whole thread has been very informative. One that I have never considered before. So sorry to anybody who took it that way. I agree the pipes shouldn't be used, even if they are legal. I read the original article before writing my response but I missed the part that said some caps have been falling off, but I do see that mentioned this new article. That's a shame. My caps were pretty tight because I've had to remove them to correct bad info that I carved into them. Still, many of mine have probably fallen off by now too. Another problem not mentioned is that the PVC beaks down and the pipes break, creating new openings... I've seen a lot of broken ones in the field. It's ultimately up to the regulators to define what markers are allowed, and if anybody doesn't comply, they will have to waste their time and money doing it right because their claim is invalid. That should be motivation enough to do it right going forward. They also say they can face fines through the migratory bird treaty act. But the problem is all the historic, abandoned markers. How do you fine people for something that was a condoned legal practice? I think the only way to get the problem fixed is for people like us to pull them out one by one when we happen upon them. But be careful, this a state issue because most states define how to mark federal mining claims. I think the posts are still legal in some states, and you could get in trouble for removing them. It may just be allowed in Nevada, so ask your local BLM office about it if you're in another state. I will inquire here in AZ. I'd like to point out that while thousands of claim markers are a huge hazard for birds, there are other hazards too. Litter is a huge problem and it's been illegal for a long time. (http://royalsociety.org/events/2012/stones-from-the-sky/) Professor Pillinger was the recipient of the Michael Faraday prize in recognition of his excellence in communicating science. The lecture is called 'Stones from the sky - A heaven sent opportunity to talk about science' For those who dont know about Professor Pillinger, here is a lowdown: 'Colin Pillinger is Professor of Planetary Sciences at the Open University. His research interests include designing unique instruments to analyse extraterrestrial samples. During his forty year career he has made more than a thousand contributions to scientific literature, and also found time to be one of Britain's foremost science communicators, contributing dozens of popular articles in newspapers and magazines as well as giving hundreds of public lectures. After analysing a number of meteorites from Mars and finding tantalising evidence of the existence of life there, he conceived the Beagle 2 mission to land on the Red Planet to confirm his discoveries. Throughout the project he filled over thirty notebooks recording the daily happenings which form the basis of his autobiographical account of the mission - My life on Mars. ' Colin Pillinger is friends with Derek and Katrina Gray, the owners of the Wold Cottage and has a particular interest in the Wold Cottage meteorite and in Sir Edward Topham who was the owner of the land at the time the meteorite fell. The webcast is an hour long but its worth watching, a really good intro to the history of the study of meteorites from a definite personality in the field. In all cases, we estimate the bulk strength of the object corresponding to its earliest observed or inferred fragmentation in the high atmosphere, and can compare these values with measured strengths of meteorites in the taxonomic class for that fall. In all 13 cases, the strength corresponding to earliest observed or inferred fragmentation is much less than the compressive or tensile strength reported for that class of stony meteorites. Bulk strengths upon atmospheric entry of these bodies are shown to be very low, 0.1 to approximately 1 MPa on first breakup, and maximal strength on breakup as 1–10 MPa corresponding to weak and “crumbly” objects, whereas measured average tensile strength of the similar meteorite classes is about 30 MPa. We find a more random relation between bulk sample strength and sample mass than is suggested by a commonly used empirical power law. We estimate bulk strengths on entry being characteristically of the order of 10−1–10−2 times the tensile strengths of recovered samples. We conclude that pre-entry, meter-scale interplanetary meteoroids are typically highly fractured or in some cases rubbly in texture, presumably as a result of their parent bodies’ collisional history, and can break up under stresses of a few megapascals. The weakness of some carbonaceous objects may result from very porous primordial accretional structures, more than fractures. These conclusions have implications for future asteroid missions, sample extraction, and asteroid hazard mitigation. source: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10./j.1945-5100.2011.01247.x/abstract I would like to congratulate Brett W for being the first to submit the correct answer because there was on 7th Lister that got the answer right. The question was Please tell me how many whole individual meteorites were found at the Gebel Kamil crater and the surrounding area? Answer There was one whole individual piece that was found at the Gebel Kamil crater site. It was reported to be the main mass weighing in at 83kg. This could be an indication that the meteor stayed intact while entering into the atmosphere and had minor separation till it met its match when it came into contact with the surface of the Earth, making a 45m diameter crater. Scientist at the site recovered over 4000 specimens great than or equal to 10g, totaling over 1700kg. Out of the thousands of specimens collected by the scientists, they were able to take half of what was collected at the end of the 2010 field servery expedition back to Cairo. The other half was left behind due to cargo space. So all in all, science got a great amount of the meteorite to study. But I would also have to say the science also is within the cater because it is still very close to its pristine state the day the event happened. I would like to say that there were only nine Listers the sent in the correct answer so I will be rewarding the first Lister that sent in the correct answer and that is Galactic Stone Ironworks. With any luck these questions will go to a scientist (and not me) and I can just concentrate on the hunting aspect - which is why I'll really be there. Here are a few basic questions that I should probably know. But I'm not sure if I do. So, if you're feeling like helping - send me an email with the correct answers. 1. Q. How many meteorites hit the ground per year? A. On average about 1 per square mile per thousand years. About 20,000 to 40,000 per year. Are you looking at the planet or ground only? 2/3 of the planet is water. I think I'll let rob Matson or Sterling answer that one. 2. Q. Has anyone ever been hit by a meteorite? A. I only know of Ann Hodges - Sylacauga, Alabama, USA A young boy was hit lightly by a Mbale fragment ricochet off a tree. There were others but mostly fiction. 3. Q. Has any animal ever been hit by a meteorite? A. I'm not sure... there are stories of a dog and a cow being hit...but? Valera did kill a cow. New Concord might have kill a young horse, but not verifiable, and the Nakhla dog is most likely fiction. 4. Q. How often does a city ending meteorite (think Canyon Diablo) strike the earth? A. ? How often? I don't know (Sterling) but Sikhote-Alin could have done a lot of damage if it had impacted a city. And how big does it have to be to be a city? 5. Q. Has any animal ever found a meteorite? A. Sorry, I just threw that one in to see if you were paying attentionlol You are on your own on that one. 6. Q. How much in weight does the earth gain per year by all the meteorites that enter our atmosphere? Including all, from tiny grain of sand meteorites to large bunker-busters. A. No clue.. Ok, you were warned. Tomorrow is my birthday (41 going on 16) and I have indulged in a rare pleasure - a few shots of Maker's Mark. This has made me a bit silly and a pointless idea spontaneously erupted from my sodded brain... Have you ever wondered what would happen if a falling meteorite struck a certain object? Now you can find out. I have an unclassified NWA chondrite of dubious worth. It is weathered. It is ugly. It's probably an H5 chondrite. It weighs 851 grams (1.87 pounds). Photos of the HAMMER SMASHER METEORITE : http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj24/Meteoritethrower/smasher-1.jpg http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/jj24/Meteoritethrower/smasher-2.jpg I am going to use this meteorite to SMASH objects that you nominate for destruction! Here is how this will work : I will accept nominations from the List for objects that will be hammered by this meteorite. Once a nomination is selected, I will take the object out into my backyard and place it on the ground. I will set up a camera to capture the resulting mayhem on video. I will then climb onto my roof and hurl the meteorite at the object with the intent of doing some serious damage to the target object. Then I will upload the video to YouTube for hammer voyeurs around the world to watch. Some rules about nominating objects : 1) I am a man of very modest means. This means I cannot, and will not, smash any flat screen plasma televisions, iPads, Ferrari windshields, priceless antiques, or other objects which are expensive or difficult to acquire. The objects nominated should be common items that are easily available and inexpensive. 2) Resist the temptation to nominate politicians (of any party affiliation). 3) I will select a winning nominee based on a combination of - creativity and smashability. 4) If someone wants to donate an object for smashing, I will consider and accept donated objects based on the criteria laid out in #3 above. You will bear the cost of shipping the object to me and return shipping if you want the shattered remnants of the objects returned to you. Let the nominations begin! All profi dealers were attending the show as the last years. You could realy see, that there was less material from NWA available than last year. For sure there were some nice specimens also achondrites offered, but absolut not to compare with that from some years ago. The prices are high. Individuals of ordinary chondrites what would not sell 3 years ago will now be bought and the collector is happy to get this. This year there was unfortunatly no meeting on the friday evening. G'Day Mike and List It sounds like you've got a dilemma. I'd like to go into it, but I feel that those that have posted have given you good advice. One additional piece of information, who I've not been able to equal is Tom Phillips' ability to create a mirror surface on a meteorite. I kid you not, what I have in my possession would blow you away. It's a real shame that he doesn't post to the Met List anymore, but he has his reasons. I suppose it's similar to Michael Johnson's Picture of the Day, I respect Tom in all aspects. He has guided me, been by my side, he recommended me for the IMCA. Yes, I know I shouldn't be mentioning the IMCA here on the Met List but he deserves a lot more than what people give him. I will gladly put you in contact with him if you're not able to make correspondence. He definitely is impeccable in all his work. Hi List, Some meteorites are hard to polish or just won't take a proper polish. Allende is one example that comes to mind readily. I've got an endcut of NWA 801 CR2 that came from the Hupe Collection. It has a wicked glossy polish on it that accentuates the chondrules. I'm working on some CR2 slices that need polishing and they won't take a decent polish. I can get the saw marks out, but beyond that I can't get a polish to take. The more I try, it just muddies up the matrix and subdues the features. The metal fleck and rings around the armored chondrules come out nicely, but the rest of the specimen becomes muddy and the chondrules fade into the matrix. What am I doing wrong? This particular CR2 is similar to NWA 801, but a little more weathered. Could that have something to do with it? Do the Hupes have some magic trade-secret technique? Or am I overlooking something obvious? I started out with 320 grit and then progressed to 400, 600, and 800 grit - hand sanding, dry, on wet/dry sandpaper. Pete you're in the good company of David Rittenhouse who asked the same question in 1780. It's related to the other conundrum - How do they stay relatively cool inside while the surface becomes fused? That seemingly goes against common sense. And with Irons it is even better because at much lower temperatures, the Widmanstatten pattern would become annealled and lost. Yet there is a fusion region on irons that can be measured in fractions of a millimeter in some cases, and never much more. Somehow, and I'm winging it though I should know, the process of ablation is so darn efficient at removing the heat generated, much like we sweat, that the ablating surface provides a natural air conditioner for what's inside, just like a swamp cooler but absorbing even by an electric excitation mechanism which discharges the energy by transforming from electrical into light energy, hece the brightness observed/ But that still doesn't explain why going into a headwind of 10 miles per second everything doesn't rip apart. That must, and please correct me if I am wrong, be due to two or three factors working in concert on the forward face of the mass: 1. heat is wicked off immediately by the sublimation described above 2,3. the ablated material leaving the surface creates a plasma which either has a much lower frictional coefficient or creates a static layer of plasma travelling with the object which essential operates as a battering ram forming its own sacrificial layer, or both. Thus, the rock from space is like an insulated kernal traveling in its own form in place shields. When it finishes its high energy velocities it goes into free fall which reaches a maximum speed of under 400 mph in most cases much less which upon hitting a soft surface can survive. But if it hits a rock, you probably will be out of luck Carancas was different because it never reached free fall, and the impact was like whipping a piece of cement to belly flop against a hard wall of something. Even then, a portion of material in the aft section can survive. Try whipping pieces of chalk against a wall and you'll demonstrate a similar effect and perhaps get some cone of material stuck to the wall and a few crumbs falling back, along with a lot of dust. If it is large enough, and traveling in a herd of rocks which is also likely since they can become insultaed in their form in place sublimation shield, the first stones will be sacrificial but some in the back may survive. A possible explanation for Carancas. Or, just that their were some laggers that fell behind the main bolus and their higher surface area slowed them much more to better withsatand an impact. Kindest wishes Douig PS nice domain, Pete PPS another way to produce some friable meteorites is let them fall in water and see what happens and recover them later. After they dry out enough material may be leached (since they are porous) that they become much more friable. G'Day Doug and list Lets not forget SkyLab What all that means, contend NASA'S statisticians, is that the chance of any remnant striking a human being is only 1 in 152; the probability of any specific person being struck is 1 in 600 billion-far less than the chance of being hit by a bolt of lightning or winning a lottery. http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,920502,00.html Andre's husband Mervin -- president of the local town council at the time -- issued the Yanks a ticket for littering. NASA/DoD used FPBBNOQ, their version of the risk assessment program to determine this, (a.k.a. falsely precise black box that no one questions otherwise known as ORSAT) NASA's ORSAT calculations were that the impact: * Cross sectional area 3.49 m^2 of UARS debris (that's 37.5 square feet) * 26 pieces surviving * 532.38 kg mass total impacting weight ORSAT, their proverbial magic black box: Estimated human casualty risk (updated to 2011): ~ 1 in 3200 The excuses and justifications and sweet talk (something like we hear in politics or by the slouchers that promise results at work IMO): No NASA or USG human casualty reentry risk limits existed when UARS was designed, built, and launched. . NASA, the USG, and some foreign space agencies now seek to limit human casualty risks from reentering space objects to less than 1 in 10,000. . UARS is a moderate-sized space object. Uncontrolled reentries of objects more massive than UARS are not frequent, but neither are they unusual. - Combined Dragon mockup and Falcon 9 second stage reentry in June 2010 was more massive. . Since the beginning of the space age, there has been no confirmed report of an injury resulting from reentering space objects. Not 1:3000, nor between 1:1000 to 1:10,000: but 1:3200. This foolishly precise assertation, which if you've read The Little Prince you immediately suspect it is overstated due to the author's calculations 70 years ago there...where a similar calculation is actually done ... Average cross sectional area of a person? (Depends if it is in the morning when everyone is praying, I guess, or in the afternoon when everyone is running out of work)...let's say: Cross section per person:18 inches by 18 inches (1.5 x 1.5 sq. feet) World population: 6.964 X 10^9 living souls World Area: 196,939,900 sq miles Calculations: * Cross section per person = 2.5 sq. feet * current world population occupies 624.3 square miles (a wee bit bigger than Guam, and smaller than Singapore) * people that could fit on Earth's surface: 2,196,000,000,000,000 (2.2 million X 10^9) * Fraction of Earth's surface that's people = 6.96 / (2,196,000) = 0.0317 = People occupy *ONLY* 3.2 parts per million (3.2 ppm) of the earth's surface So, saving rounding till the end, each piece of UARS actually has a 1/315,457 chance of falling on people (1/0.0317). In rounded numbers, that's about 1:320,000 per fragment == 26 fragments approximately 1:12,000 chance. I guess if you are American you need more space than if you are Indonesian, and changing it to a 18 inches X 17 inches would change the result by 6% ie, if 3200 were right for 18X18 it would now be about 1:3000, and that is one of so many assumptions making the 3200 number a total joke of fake scientific confidence. If you gave everyone a square yard ((91.4 cm)^2) instead, it would be in the 3000

Hi Shawn, Shyawn, you clearly didn't understand what I was sayingt, so I'll be a bit clearer: - Firstly, you left out the most important sentence in Williams' description, because you are quoting third or fourth hand and Marvin wasn't commenting on the first use of chondrules n or trying to list every personal communication of the period. So I'll take the liberty of helping you despite your stupid comment telling me to read more. The description continues: The spherical bodies were much harder than the rest of the stone. That said: - You did not provide any first hand referencfe that chondrules were *first* discovered in 1799. - You did not provide a quote that Ursula Marvin supported that the Benares description was the first incidence of a description of chondrules. - You got the year wrong (1869) that the term chondrule was coined (1863). - You zero in on the word spherical. Well, chondrules in meteorites are more frequently not spherical. What remnants you find in meteorites like Siena...are just granular, or remnants. Discovery has nothing to do with obnserving a spherical one vs. a squashed, crushed typical one. Most have been altered. That is my opinion, but strongly so, Hence, describing granules without calling them spherical only means that Benares had less deformed chondrules (and it was a great description in general). Sorry, but the assumptions were just way out. The first place it is in print (1802) will be a reasonable occurence for the concept of spherical granules, as opposed to regular granules. Since the 1799 date is not a publication date, and it is clear that plenty of correspondence was being exchanged, credit for publication goes to Howard so far, who though enough of this to publish. Back in the 1700's no one had a clue that chondrules were condensates or any other context to ascribe importance to them. When people looked at spherical, granular, or any other rounded form, that was clearly observed earlier, definitely in 1766 by Troili. The fact that the word spherical vs. granule was used in your reference means absolutely nothing except that more spherical chondrules occur in Benares than do in, eg. Albareto, Wold Cottage, etc. Chondrules were first understood in 1864. In that year it was first theorized that this peculiar structure, was a condensation product - specifically droplets of fiery rain from the Sun by Sorby, who showed they were melt products and presented that theory. That is when chondrules as a feature were discovered and lead to meteorites being a key to unlocking the solar system's formation. - As an aside: The independent account you mention from Williams has no mention of any kind of granule or chondrule. You indicate Williams discovered chondrules. A critical read of the information you provided suggest to me that in what you posted, that it was Sir Joseph who had already observed this in the older falls. And it was Sir Joseph who likely noted that this was a common feature of meteorites, based on his prior observations, not Williams who provided him with additional data, which was the basis of comparson. OK, enough ... At any rate, NASA must be excited about this and I guess anything is possible these days, Tagish Lake has opals in them, lets see if we can find the fountain of youth next. Here is the abstract down below Abstract Structures of skeletal muscle fibers are found in three micrographs, which were imaged by Tom Phillips from a thin section cut out of Martian meteorite NWA 998. The morphology, organization, and context of the structures indicate they were the structures of muscle fibers. The micrographs show no cracks for the structures to move from outside the meteorite to their present locations. Therefore, the muscle fiber structures should be indigenous to meteorite NWA 998. The structures of muscle fibers are found in the meteorite possibly because the parent rock of the meteorite solidified around the fossilized muscle fibers on Mars. http://wretchfossil.blogspot.com/2011/06/structures-of-skeletal-muscle-f ibers.html Shawn Alan IMCA 1633 eBaystore http://shop.ebay.com/photophlow/m.html __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] Structures of Skeletal Muscle Fibers Found inMeteorite A lot of BS
G'Day Shawn and List I've already posted in regards to a thread that happened a while ago, that Tom was a little bit put out about. Not only have his images been used, but his words have been twisted. I wish he was back on the Met List. But after some correspondence with him today, he sent this to me with permission to post it. Welcome to the Tom Phillips Meteorite Micrograph Gallery! This gallery contains microscopic images of meteorites. While it is tempting to read into what you might think you see, I have never found any evidence of past life or any thing supernatural. I have read claims by people using my images to support their ideas, theories and dogmas. The claims of muscle fibers and other animal/people parts are the easiest to disprove as the size scale is off. Many meteorites have various forms of barred chondrules which may be large or quite small, almost fiber looking. These are not biological in nature. I can and have found strikingly similar looking structures in fresh volcanic rock. The claims involving faith and much harder to address. All I can say is I have noted no messages or hidden symbolism in any of my images. My images combine some science and some art. I am concentrating on the visually pleasing. What that means is I am often working with magnifications much higher than what is typically useful in optical meteorite classification examinations and as such, my images look Different than what many are accustomed to. This puts me in the position of being sensitive to outrageous claims involving my images. I am careful to say only what is accurate and I generally avoid analysis. Hello Listers I was doing some researching and came across this link and not sure if its been listed but I find this to be interesting and also mm to be weird science.
[meteorite-list] OT: Strange
G'Day List I don't know if anybody else is noticing but feeds coming through from the Met List are delayed and in batches, which is cool but sometimes it can cause complications. Without putting any names in place or promoting any body, I got a batch the day before. I constantly monitor what's coming down the pipeline then all of a sudden .. Bang! I get all these replies in one block. Some had been sent the day before, some have been sent on the current day, the times just don't add up. But one person in particular posted an ad, he sent it at 3 something AM and then at 1.30 PM a batch came through with maybe 12 listings on the Met List that had been sent quite some time ago. I was interested in the ad, so I immediately clicked on it and the auction had finished. So for those that are placing ads, maybe you should get them in a week ahead of schedule, because I'm definitely not receiving them until everything is finished. Just some thought and no animals or meteorites were harmed during this post. Ditto! A fact-supported discussion would be so much nicer. It is my understanding that when Apollo lost its funding, oodles of relics entered the private domain and there wasn't much ado about it - rather, a tacit acceptance and a party atmosphere pervaded in the wake of Moonphoria and non had any scientific value at the time. Where are the retroactive vigorous sting operations hunting down these national treasures? I am sure the same laws, whatever they might be, cover them. Post-facto contrived rules are a violation which seems to date to the Magna Carta and any remotely civilized society. All material loaned or provided in exchange for analyses to be done which is covered by modern agreements (as Jeff alludes to) has a clear paper trail, but there are the nonsensical cases like tape on the Hasselblad magazines demonstrate how ludicrous things can become for reasons foreign to science and domestic to collectors willingness to pay. I take my place behind the line of those who have already pointed this out. Moon specimens that were incidental and innocuous gifts of questionable or no value at the time seem to have taken a special place. But, there are other exceptions as well. As I peruse the aisles of the gift shop at KSC I am tempted to buy a Space Shuttle heat tile. Yet NASA has allegedly gone on record saying that it will not dispose of them by sale to the public (reason: we could be liable for unintended harm they might cause). Rumor has it that the Soviet Buran tiles are more interesting to collect and Russia has no such hang ups over them, so I'll hold out for one of them. If I had an American one it would not be satisfying in present company. I couldn't freely share it with my international friends without risking being thrown in jail for providing sensitive military secrets to other nations... at least that is the rumor on how it was for a long time ... There is a clear demonstration of double standard and a willingness to invent retroactive laws, which should be prohibited constitutionally, but the American system separates the judicial and that makes legislation from the bench a convenient option in cases like this. How frustrating for Mr. Rosen, the guy who bought the gifted moon rock from a Honduran official for a large sum of money. The government simply snatched it from him and it was not because the Hondurans filed a claim. If he had been compensated for his recovery of the specimen it would be different in my view. But the way it went down, there is reason to be wary of the court's freeloading and arbitrary mindset in these cases. It is quite removed from science and boils down to politics and setting cruel and unusual precedents at the expense of citizens for prior shoddy control practices. Mr. Rosen, the owner at the time of the Moon rock was never charged with any criminal activity - they just took the rock plaque and left him to brood. If they could have charged him I sort of think they would have given the zest to make examples out of people. But they got what they wanted - a precedent of no-ownership when before there was none to my knowledge. I would point out that this nonsensical legal gymnastic that seems to have developed ought to be applied to each and every scientist in the United States that is on any payroll or grant for a project who supposedly buys specimens in his free time. How different is such piggybacking from the microgram residues on a piece of tape out of a camera? How did Dr. King amass that huge

No idea, how one can speak then from smuggling or even black market. Agreements such as the one shown here have long been used Well, in this case it's the simple question how long they have been used. Florian, who acquired the scotch tape, told, that when Slezak put the strip of tape on the poster to remember in 1969/1970 no regulations concerning the Apollo materials existed, the first ones came into effect in August 1972. If it's so - then: Newspaper had its story, attorney his publicity on TV... and because Ex post facto, the widow should get her dust grains back. If it's not so, FBI has to throw Slezak and btw. I don't know what kind of variability of terms there have been in these agreements, but I'm confident that, whatever they say, they are legally binding on the recipients who sign them. I don't understand why people would be surprised that material of any value removed from a federal facility without permission might be subject to scrutiny. This sounds like theft to me, and doesn't seem to require any special law pertaining to the specific material. So, I don't understand the comment about self-proclaimed laws. Even if there is no cover-up of the removal or subsequent sale, that does not necessarily make it legal. I think the legal issue might come down to whether or not the remover had permission, either expressed or implied. Re: [meteorite-list] Lovina: most likely not a meteorite
G'Day Everyone, (sorry too many to list) When Lovina came to light, I was impressed. I had never seen anything like it and to be honest, I had my doubts. Then the situation progressed and I thought, wow, this is spectacular and you must admit, it's one hell of a piece! My first thoughts when this came to fruitation was a Manganese Nodule highly abrated and managed to surface itself on a beach, that's when the story began. I withdrew into my shell in disgust and embarrassment and then Lovina erupted again and I was excited. Now this latest issue... Please, you've got to stop. I've been on this roller coaster ride for a long time and I'm about to puke ;-)) But in the great words of Mike G, even though I don't own any Lovina, whatever is associated with it has been suspended from sale until further notice. -Original Message- From: meteorite-list-boun...@meteoritecentral.com [mailto:meteorite-list-boun...@meteoritecentral.com] On Behalf Of Michael Gilmer Sent: Tuesday, May 24, 2011 7:54 PM To: Count Deiro Cc: Meteorite-list List; Baiyu Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Lovina: most likely not a meteorite Well said Count. Kuni, the abstract's lead author, concluded it is unlikely Lovina is a meteorite. The markers analyzed were beryllium and chlorine concentrations and the paucity of cosmogenic radionuclides (only Gibeon and Nantan show less). One more round of tests will occur and further conclusions will be drawn from the same. The abstract entitled Lovina: is this a Meteorite? will appear in the MAPS volume associated with the 74th Annual Meteoritical Society Meeting this coming August. It has been suggested by some diehards that the bubbling evident in the Lovina mass could have been the result of smelting, and that the lack of cosmogenic radiation could be explained by Lovina having been near the center of a much larger mass---as we know Lovina originated from at least a somewhat larger mass for the ziggurat structures to have formed. However, in the spirit of embracing the most likely of explanations, it seems compelling to conclude that the most likely explanation for an expanding host of anomalies is Lovina's terrestrial origin. Accordingly, I've decided to no longer offer Lovina as a meteorite and have asked my webmaster to take down references to the same on Macovich.com at her earliest possible convenience. Hi Al, I'm sorry if I offended you or anyone else on the list. I was just trying to make some humor, albeit in a poor manner apparently. For the record, I am not anti-religious. I am a deeply spiritual person, but not in the usual mainstream manner. I have compassion for my fellow man and all living things on this Earth and a deep respect for nature. What I don't like is insane old charlatans making statements designed to create chaos and generate publicity and revenue. Imagine the children in this situation. Mom and Dad suddenly go off the deep end listening to this self-proclaimed messenger of God. They sell off the house, quit their jobs, and drag the kids across the country in a mini-van with the word Rapture plastered all over it. At the end of the day, the child is now homeless and his parents have no means to properly care for him. That is child abuse and the old man who announced this prophecy should be brought up on criminal charges or hit with a civil suit. One cannot yell Fire! in a crowded theatre, and one should not be allowed to maliciously disrupt the lives of countless families to the detriment of the children involved. I don't feel sorry for the gullible sheeple adults who fell for this nonsense, but their kids have no say in it. I have a problem with BS and I have never been afraid to call BS when I see it. The God of Moses will send the messiah like a thief in the night and none shall know the day of his arrival. I have read 3 translations of the Bible (also the Apocrypha) cover to cover, and most of the world's major holy books, including the Koran, the Bardo Thudo, the Bhagavad Gita, Book of the Mormon, the Classics of Confucianism, Egyptian Book of the Dead, the Satanic Bible (a joke and insult to the mind, but I had to read it to understand it), the Tanakh and the Torah, and I could go on. In all, I have digested about 2 dozen of the world's holiest books during my spiritual search. So I am not anti-religious. I am anti-BS and this recent rapture nonsense was exactly that - malicious BS designed to attract publicity and profit. Or, it was the delusional ramblings of a self-aggrandizer who should be medicated and placed in a treatment facility. I was baptized, took communion, attended Eucharist, and meditated in a Buddhist temple. I have also attended two Witches' Sabbats. I think you get my point. I don't mean to offend, and I often stick my foot into my mouth. And when I do offend, I always apologize and mean it. I like you Al, always have. And I don't want you pissed off at me, so I hope you can forgive my attempt at humor that started this. Jesus was one cool dude, full of love, compassion, and wisdom. I wish everyone could be like him - the world would be a better place. Unfortunately, nutjobs like Harold Camping hijack the message of Jesus for profit - and people like that should be firmly rebuked, IMO. I was going to send this to you privately, but since you called me out on the list, I am replying in public. But this will be my last post on the list about this and if you want to continue the discussion in private, we can. I saw some strange pieces of 'Mifflin' on ebay that I thought looked funny. People were talking about the meteorite having two lithologies, but...the slices and individuals that I saw looked 'off.' A select few looked like H-chondrites, and they had the telltale signs of wear that freshly-imported Moroccan falls bear: worn edges, exposed metal flakes on protruding corners (where the fusion crust had been worn off due to improper packing), etc. At the time, I did nothing but send a private email to Anne Black notifying her of my suspicions. I spoke with some other prominent list-members addressing it, and they all agreed that the material looked funny, but that nothing could be done about it given the required burden of proof. So, I sat on my hands for several months. Just over a month ago, I saw a piece of the funny-looking 'Mifflin' on ebay. It looked similar to some pieces that I remembered seeing on ebay months before, and, being an end-cut, I was able to see both the stone's funny-looking inside -- and the apparent metal grains on the stone's exterior. I used the 'buy-it-now' option to purchase the end-cut, and it arrived while Peter and I were in Morocco. When we returned, I promptly shipped the end-cut off to Tony Irving of the University of Washington; he agreed to analyze the stone posthaste. The results came back, but Tony wanted to wait until the probe was recallibrated so that he could run it again to be sure. Lo and behold, he did confirm that my end-cut was an equilibrated H-chondrite, with an olivine Fa of 18.6. For comparison, Chergach and Bassikounou both have Fa contents of 18.4 and 18.6, respectively. University of Madison, Wisconsin performed most of the work on the Mifflin fall. Between them and the Field Museum, over twenty separate stones were analyzed. They were all L5. Mifflin is classified as an L5, with an Fa of ~24.9 +/- 0.2. I then sent Tony the link to the ebay auction so he could confirm that the piece that he had analyzed was indeed the piece that I had sent him. He did. I purchased my end-cut from Bryan Scarborough (IMCA), who purchased it from Michael Cottingham, who purchased it from Greg Catterton (IMCA), who purchased the stone with Carl Esparza from the

Question Please tell me which meteorite fall was one of the first falls to be recognized by scientists as a rock from space. Answer Chassigny is a fall from 1815 in France and as such was one of the first meteorite falls to be recognized by scientists as a rock from space. It is curated by the Paris Museum. Chassigny is the only martian meteorite which is a dunite, or olivine cumulate. It consists mostly of Fe-rich olivine with minor clinopyroxene, feldspar, oxides, sulfides, and phosphates. It contains oxidized iron in its chromite and rare amphiboles in melt inclusions. It contains trace amounts of carbonate and sulfate salts in cracks inside the sample. http://curator.jsc.nasa.gov/antmet/marsmets/chassigny/sample.cfm I can say this the LAigle meteorite helped the notion of the idea that meteorites fall from the sky but LAigle from a scientific value and history value wasn't stated to be from space. Re: [meteorite-list] Which came first the chicken or the egg?
G'Day Shawn and list The chicken. The scientific and philosophical mystery was purportedly unraveled by researchers at Sheffield and Warwick universities, according to the Daily Mail newspaper. The scientists found that a protein found only in a chicken's ovaries is necessary for the formation of the egg, according to the paper Wednesday. The egg can therefore only exist if it has been created inside a chicken. The protein speeds up the development of the hard shell, which is essential in protecting the delicate yolk and fluids while the chick grows inside the egg :-) :-) Cheers John IMCA 2125 -Original Message- From: meteorite-list-boun...@meteoritecentral.com [mailto:meteorite-list-boun...@meteoritecentral.com] On Behalf Of Shawn Alan Sent: Tuesday, April 26, 2011 5:59 PM To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Subject: [meteorite-list] Which came first the chicken or the egg? There is no data as far as I know as to when Calcalong Creek was actually picked up. Haag found Calcalong Creek in a box of Millbillillie stones stones he purchased in1990 or 1991 and he recognized it as different then.
