RE: [meteorite-list] Fireball over England

2004-09-24 Thread Ken O'Neill
Hi All,

There is one witness report (a good one) so far here in Ireland. I
heard him being interviewed on the radio this morning at 9:30
(approx) am. He gave a detailed eye witness report from his location
in Dublin. He also gave the time of 6:30 am for the fireball.

I have been stuck in meetings all day so couldn't follow it up. I
will try to get some more information.

I hope it didn't drop into the Irish Sea.

Regards

Ken O'Neill

We have received reports of a fireball and airburst over the
Northamptonshire/Buckinghamshire/Bedfordshire area this morning
(~06.30am BST). The approximate trajectory was in a south-east
direction.

Has anyone else in the UK meteorite community heard anything about this
or witnessed the event?

Cheers

RE: [meteorite-list] Meteorite eBay Bidding Comment

2004-06-11 Thread Ken O'Neill
Hi Mike and all,

It is frustrating to get sniped but I find it necessary to bid this way. A
lot of the meteorite auctions are from the US and tend to end 2 am to 5 am
my local time. I am asleep when the auctions end. The only sure fire way I
can ensure a bid is placed is by using a sniping service such as
www.auctionstealer.com
I have also lost out on items on which I would have placed a bid, due to
unforeseen circumstances keeping me away from a PC. If I use a sniping
service I have the general assurance I won't fail to get a bid in on any
item I really want. The bid is placed on time regardless of my location.

Bear in mind too that a snipe will never win if your bid is higher than the
snipe, no matter when you placed your bid.

Good luck in your future auctions.

Regards

Ken O'Neill

Good Morning-
This is probably a little off topic- but a comment
I would like to make to see if I am alone in this.
When bidding in ebay or other on meteorites- there
is nothing more disappointing than someone that lays
out for the last few seconds and then outbids you with
a fast server. It does not give the previous bidder
any chance to reconsider their offer.
I know it is fair to do this- but it seems to be
the same people always doing it. It really gives that
person a negative image to me.
I am no better than anyone else- but I try never to
do this to anyone. I think it would be common courtesy
among meteorite collectors- especially of this list
and the IMCA, to never do this to each other. It would
build mutual respect among us.
Just a comment- I hope all of you have a good
weekend.

RE: [meteorite-list] Say What??

2003-12-10 Thread Ken O'Neill
Hi all,

As has been mentioned before the strange dialect below is due to Matteo
using a software translator to translate his Italian to English. It cannot
handle his colloquialism's.

I would suggest (again as has been mentioned before) that Matteo :

1) upgrade his translator software then test the translations.
2) use plain English to avoid the strange translations of his
colloquialism's.

If Matteo is unable to do the above I would further suggest he stops posting
to the list due to the confusion he causes.

I am not putting Matteo down here, but, he could with a little effort,
implement simple practical steps that would go a long way to stop the
recurring issues not only to his benefit but also to everyone on this list.

[meteorite-list] OT - Massive Aurora

2003-11-20 Thread Ken O'Neill

Hi
List
Hope you can all get
a clear sky tonight for the Aurora in progress tonight.

I have a fantastic
view here in Ireland. Here is a clip from an email from Astronomy Ireland to
their membership.

Dave Gradwell in Birr, Co. Offaly just called
Astronomy Ireland (5:36pm)
to say there is a major aurora in progress! There was
a corona overhead!
Keith Geary in Cavan just sent a TEXT saying RED
aurora overhead. I can
see it from our Shop window in the brightly lit
Butterly Business Park
in Dublin 5! Heading to country-side soon!
Checking the web sites and emails confirms a massive
geomagnetic storm
is in progress and has been since 8am (been a little
too busy in the
aftermath of our extremely successful Astro-Expo to
be checking as
regularly as I usually do! see website for Astro-Expo
report by the way,
with photos!).
The aurora was caused by a CME (coronal mass
ejection) from sunspot
group number 484 that has survived a complete
rotation around the back
of the Sun and is nicely on view again (I saw it from
the office just
before the Sun set in a pair of 10x50s fitted with
AstroSolar filter).
The CME happened on Nov. 18.

Good
Luck

List,

I agree with Dave on this, its time to let this one go, we have had
Racism, name calling, Deformation of character, and general
unpleasantness it has no place on an international 'scientific'
discussion list of this type.

This list is going down hill rapidly, I have noticed many people are no
longer posting like they used to, and I think if this barrage of JUNK
postings about Matteo etc continues we really won't have a List anymore!

Can I make a personal plea to everybody; keep it friendly and on topic.

not relevant to meteorites, nor is name calling take your racism else

2003-09-02 Thread Ken O'Neill
Hi Jim list,

Good luck on finding some Crumlin, its hard enough trying to locate material
from a recent fall let alone one from 1902, but I suppose you have a general
idea of the strewn field area.

I expect to have more info on the Aug 27th fireball by the weekend. I hope
by then I'll have something positive to report. It would be brilliant for
Ireland to have another fall to add to its short list. As seems to be the
usual eye witness reports vary a lot. I have a bit of an advantage in being
fortunate enough to have witnessed the fireball. What a fantastic sight it
was too.

BTW if anyone can give me some extra tuition on fireball tracking and
locating the strewn field (I wish)please help ! contact me off list if it
will be run of the mill stuff for everone else.

[meteorite-list] Determining true path of Fireball

2003-09-01 Thread Ken O'Neill

Hi
all,

I hope to track the
path of a fireball that was witnessed by myself and many others here in Ireland.
This occurred at 23:25 BST on Mars night 27th August. I have some observation
reports and expect soon to have access to a lot more.

I have read O.R.
Nortons method of tracking from the Rocks from Space book. Could anyone add something to
this or provide a "new angle" for me, or expand on the method. Trigonometry was
not a hot subject of mine but with some guidance I can work it
through.

Falls are not too
common here in Ireland and finds even less. If some material was found it would
be pretty major.

Thanks in advance
for your help on this.

Dear List Members,

We are proud to announce the bringing back of an old team member. His name
is Vic, which some of you may have met in Denver last year at the show. He
doesn't know a lot about meteorites, yet, but is awesome with web-site
development. He developed three major sites for us in the past concerning
Transaction Tracking Systems (TTS), an online outdoor sporting goods store
with over 5,000 products and a major site for our Computer Corporation
before we merged and eventually sold. Formerly, he was a head developer at
Compaq so he has the experience needed to take on our latest project. As a
part of our team he will be engaged in the development of a major new
interactive meteorite site.

We are currently developing the hierarchy in which this site will operate.
Some things being discussed are making this site a good place to get the
latest news on new discoveries, provisional scientific reports, trip
reports, meteorite gossip, market analysis (current meteorite prices) and
may even feature a trading floor like the NY exchange. Another thing we are
working on is a cyber bar where people with similar interests can pull up a
stool and discuss anything they want. It may even have a bartender who will
dispense advice if he detects an argument in the LunarRock Cyber Bar. Of
course a cyber bouncer will be on hand if somebody becomes too obnoxious.
This site will be intended to promote the fun and interesting side of
meteoritics and will be more informational in nature than a site purely
devoted to sales.

For you who are going to Denver, you will have a chance to meet Vic who is
very entertaining to be around. When you meet him you will know what we are
talking about.

Wishing everybody the best,

Adam and Greg Hupe

Hi List,

I recently acquired some unclassified NWA's and on examining a small stone
noticed a tiny cavity with a pinkish coloured sphere embedded.
I took a look under my digital microscope and saw what appears to be a
chondrule held in a large cavity by crystals. I'm definitely no expert so
would welcome anyone out there willing to give me a second opinion, or
indeed any feedback.

Hello Robert and list, My understanding of planet formation in a nutshell is
that debris orbiting the Sun gradually merged and formed planets. Right?
Why couldn't two bodies have formed from the same debris in the same
orbit and orbiting around the sun together in the same direction and the
same orbit, Gradually the Moon slowly caught up with the earth and got
caught up in the earths gravity? Or the earth came up behind the Moon and
captured it?

What, specifically, about this theory bothers you?

I would first stand by the theory that it was caught up in our

While this is a ~possible~ scenario, you have to understand how
extremely unlikely graceful capture is compared to impact.
The capture idea also has a difficult time explaining why the

which the impact theory explains nicely. Finally, why the

Prior to the Apollo sample return missions (and the discovery

had some wobbly legs to stand on. But O-isotope analysis of
the moon rocks knocked one leg out, and the other leg was swept
away by Lunar Prospector's confirmation that the moon's core
comprises less than 3% of the moon's mass.

RE: [meteorite-list] cd rom of meteorites

2003-07-11 Thread Ken O'Neill

Howard,

I certainly would not advocate software piracy and I did not expect a
pirated copy or such like from Steve. My use of the word copy was sloppy as
it could have been and was interpeted by you as an illegal copy. The use
of the word copy was the same as if I went into say a book shop and asked
for a copy of Rocks from Space by O.R Norton. I wouldn't expect them to
start photocopying the original for me.

Your really should have keep this off the list! Softward Piracy is a

this. While helping ourselves we are injuring the author's intent who we

I would expect so. Could a difference occur if through a giant impact as

 is
that debris orbiting the Sun gradually merged and formed planets. Right?
Why couldn't two bodies have formed from the same debris in the same

same orbit, Gradually the Moon slowly caught up with the earth and got
caught up in the earths gravity? Or the earth came up behind the Moon

While this is a ~possible~ scenario, you have to understand how

The capture idea also has a difficult time explaining why the

Purchase a 1 acre plot on Mars for only £14.25 plus registration fee, VAT

Deed, Constitution, Property Map, *Mineral Rights*, and a copy of
the original Declaration of Ownership. In addition 10-acre plots are
available.

Now all I have to do is work out how to get the rocks back to Earth ! Or
maybe I could sell them on Ebay with the previso the buyer has to collect
them personally ;-)

RE: [meteorite-list] TO: Use of Frames on Websites

2003-07-06 Thread Ken O'Neill

Hi Walter,

Here is a link to some info on authoring using frames :

http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/authoring/frames/index.html

As you will see from the dates of these articles there is not much new in
frames and designers now tend to use Style sheets and tables to control
placement of content.

You have to use the noframes tag for the people whose browsers cannot handle
frames. The noframes tag allows you to set an alternative set of links to
navigate your site. Another drawback with frames is how Search Engines
catalogue the content of your site. Their spiders can get confused and not
get past page 1 if coded incorrectly. The upshot of this is the failure of
the search engine to list you. If a potential visitor is in google and
searching for meteorite unless your listed they will never find you.

There are a few more drawbacks such as visitors can get stuck in your frames
when trying to go elsewhere, this can get annoying. Again this problem would
be down to bad coding.

All in all frames can give attractive results if coded correctly but today
frames is not the favoured choice in web layouts. Style sheets and tables
can make life a lot easier.

Webmonkey will give you some good idea's and caters for all levels of web
design.

Hope this is of some help.

Regards

Ken O'Neill

don't. Are there any technical advantages or disadvantages to using frames?

 Hello everyone,

On ebay I am shawomet, and I am the person whom Matteo is suggesting be
blackballed on ebay because I left him negative feedback.
I am very sorry that Matteo chose to air our differences on this list.
When he continued to lie to me, I told Matteo he was very lucky I was
keeping this between the 2 of us. Now he has decided to slam me in
public, so, to set the record straight, here is why Matteo is so upset
 with me.

It begins with the simple fact that Park Forest was a very special fall
in my opinion. My emphasis in collecting has always been more on the
history, and less on the science. So, Park Forest had it all in my
eyes. I knew I was reading about, on this list, a fall that would rank
as very historic. I resolved that I would try to acquire as many
samples of the various hammers or house smashers as I could.
It's 3 months later and I believe I did well in reaching my specific
 goals.

Then one day I saw this ebay auction just a few hours after Matteo
 listed it:
 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2178091504

This listing gave the unmistakable impression that the seller was
offering a slice of the stone that hit the roof of the PF Firestation!
 With a buy-now option of $55 for a 1g slice. I thought, wow, what a
way to round out my PF hammer collection!. But I also thought I
thought the PF town council had decided to sell this stone to a museum?
I then did what I've never done before. Bid first ( or in this case
buy-now first ) and ask questions later. If this really were a piece
of the PF Firestation stone, the auction might end with a buy-now before
Matteo could answer my questions. So I ended the auction and
immediately wrote to Matteo. I told him I would send payment if he
could provide the evidence that this was indeed from the PF Firestation
hammer. His reply did not really address my question. He told me that
he got the slice from Michael Blood, who got it from the Hupes. He told
me he had a slice from this stone on his collection page. He did, and
 it was captioned Firestation stone.

I decided to contact Michael Blood, but he was not around. I decided to
sleep on it. Lo and behold, when I awake I remember that Michael did
offer pieces of a stone that had fallen across the street from the
firestation. Matteo was mistaken. It must be a piece of this stone
that I had purchased. So I wrote to Matteo and told him he must be in
error, but being an honorable man, I would pay his ebay fees since I had
bid first and asked questions later. A small loss for me, no loss for
 Matteo.

Matteo's reply to my suggestion was that I could believe one of 2
things. I could believe that Michael Blood was a liar, or I could
believe the slice came from the stone that penetrated the roof of the
firestation. Whatever Matteo's reason for putting it that way, I fell
for it and sent my payment. A perfect example of being told what I
really wanted to hear and believing it I guess.

Several days went bye when I noticed a post from Michael to the list.
Seeing that he was around I contacted him and discovered my memory had
been correct. Michael never offered this hammer on his pre-post list

RE: [meteorite-list] Dealer Refunds

2003-06-28 Thread Ken O'Neill
Hi all,

The dilemma highlighted by other posts is :

1) Refund and take the hit no matter how unreasonable or unjustified the
grounds for the refund, and thereby save any aggravation/bad press.
or
2) Refuse the refund and hope the fallout will not be too damaging.

I think this is a classic dilemma suffered by anyone involved in a retail
environment. It is always a good idea to have a clear and concise refund
policy, this will clarify any grey area's and will lead to a reduction in
contentions. However this advantage only applies when you are dealing with
reasonable people. There will always be customers who are totally
unreasonable. No matter how clear, concise, any disclaimers, sales, refund
policies are, they will not help you with that totally unreasonable customer
unless they plan to go legal. The legal option I would envisage as the very
very last resort extremely undesirable. If the legal road was taken I
would say you sales policies (as long as legal themselves) would win the
day.

So its back to the dilemma above. There is no clear answer but I would tend
to agree with Rob Wesel's first instinct and that is refund and get on with
life.

There are also different levels of retail trade. If I buy stocks or
commodities and get wiped out the next day, its my look out. I may buy gold
the market may push the price down the next week, would I get a refund or
would the dealer give me the difference in value as a refund. I don't think
so. What about a car (as mentioned)? washing machine ? Where do meteorites
fit in ? Should there be a different attitude to different products ?

I reckon with good clear sales policies in place the instances of a bad
transaction will be greatly reduced, regardless of what product you are
selling.

Hi
all,

Firstly thanks to
Steve Witt for your words of advice to me as "the new kid on the block". Got the
book by O.R. Norton and love it. It was good to get the names to the faces on
the photograph, I even managed torecognise Bob Haag on the Discovery
Channel yesterday, and again in the "Rocks from Space" book.

We're
all passionate about
these
"rocks from space" and love nothing better than to talk about
them
all day long. BTW; If you're married, you're wife (if not now)
will
soon be what we refer to as a "meteorite widow".
My wife already thinks
she is a "computer widow" I am preparing her for the added bonus of "meteorite
widowhood"
Glad to be part of the
mailing list and enjoy reading all the posts.
I suppose out there
somewhere is software to simulate meteorite falls, allowing for variables of trajectory,
weight, time of entry etc. If anyone can let me know where Imight get hold
ofsuch software I would be very grateful.
Not yet a member of
