Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Photo Presentation at Auction
I should add that the silent slide show will be shown in a loop, and that it will be shown at least a couple of times or more during the two hours before the auction so folks can catch it whenever they arrive. I am having the photos put on a DVD by a professional company this week. Chris will be there at 5 to set it up. I hope it will give folks who have not had the chance to be out in the field hunting for weeks at a time at a newly discovered strewn field a glimpse of the way it was. Twink Dear List Members, Chris Monrad (son of Twink) will be presenting over 300 photos From 5 PM to 7:30 PM in the room just off the auction. Photos will include: -All of the Gold Basin project hunts hunters who joined in later, -Tucson Show photos, -Jim Kriegh Twink Monrad parties at his house -Other misc. meteorite related photos -Classic photos of the late Jim Kriegh -Photos of O. Richard Norton -Photos of lots of the other meteorite folks. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

I echo Werner Schroer, we can't thank Bernd enough! Bernd, I want to use this opportunity to thank you for your input to the list. It is always inspiring and I've learned quite a bit from you over the years. You seem to be a walking encyclopedia and if you don't have an answer in your head, you know where to find it. These hotels are both not far from where I live, and it is considered a very safe area and are both clean, and the Quality Inn was recently redone. And, they are convenient- both are a straight shot to downtown on Oracle Road, about 7 miles. Bryan will be attending the 2013 Tucson show and needs to find either a hotel to stay or a room to share with someone attending. I have already made my own accommodations so am hoping the group can help. In terms of hotels, I have identified a few and wanted to make sure these are safe and clean locations to stay: 1) Towne Place Suites by Marriott Tucson North 405 W Rudasill Rd, Tucson, AZ, 85704 2) Quality Inn Suites 7411 N Oracle Rd, Tucson, AZ, 85704 His budget is around $100/night so if you have any other recommendations, please feel free to make them. Bryan needs to secure his travel visa fairly quickly, so prompt responses back to me would be appreciated. Re: [meteorite-list] Discovered! The Meteorite-List - February, 1998
And, January 1998 is the month the University of Arizona made the press release about a certain retired U of A civil engineering professor from Oro Valley, Arizona who had inadvertently discovered a new meteorite field called Gold Basin. It stated that Professor Jim Kreigh and John Blennert and Twink Monrad had been involved in the mapping of the field for two years prior to the press release. All of a sudden we three had scores of new friends and I think I can state for John and myself that we still cherish our new friends that we met at Tucson Gem and Mineral Show February 1998. I wish we could repeat all of the hunting trips joined in by many of our new friends. Wouldn't it be great if the rest of these writings were still lurking somewhere in cyberspace, just lost under an avalanche of Facebook deletions, but waiting to be found? What a treasure trove of contemporary meteorite history they would be- the successes, scandals, discoveries and adventures we've collectively experienced and shared, remembering the enemies we've tormented and the friends we've praised. Art Jones opened this venue sixteen years ago. Our first Meteorite Forum was held just days after the ALH 84001 announcement on August 6, 1996. As I recall, there were only 5 or 6 of us on the first chat which included Paul Harris and Jim Tobin of Meteorite Exchange and current editors of METEORITE TIMES, Rick Kujawa, me and a few others who escape my memory for now. - Michael Blood While doing research this especially rainy, rain forest afternoon - my neighborhood monkeys have donned waterproof Gortex hoodies monogrammed I 'heart' Costa Rica' while they pose for tourists- I stumbled upon this precious link to our past... http://www7.pair.com/arthur/meteor/archive/archive4/Feb98/temp/threads.html# 00020 It is the entire m-list archive from Feb, 1998. Phile Bagnall kicks off the month writing about Ron Farrell's latest folly (those list members not familiar with Mr. Farrell can 'google' for a bio). Phil wonders if he too is a member of the vast 'meteorite community conspiracy' Farrell believes is responsible for his prediciment. Frank Stroik (Dept. of Geology Geophysics, University of Wyoming) was our first and all-time best resident genius/teacher and he discusses CI Chondrites with Martin Horejsi. Others join in making this the longest thread of the month. Great science here! Ron Baalke opined frequently on the list. Here he correctly argues against J.E. Bradenburg's paper claiming Mars as the CI parent body. There's a long thread about Holbrook. Baalke sees no added value in slices of Holbrook v. individuals. Others cite 'cut loss' and the rarity of Holbrook specimens 'big enough to even bother slicing' as factors in legitimately demanding higher per/gram cost for slices. Matt Morgan's 'tip of the day' is to spray Krylon on Gao slices to create a 3-D effect. Typical of the times, this list existed to help and inform the community and was growing rapidly. Jim Hurley seeks a sponsor for MetSoc membership. John Blennert clicks on 'subscribe' to join the met-list. Darryl Pitt is proud to have yet another Grammy Award winner in his stable of jazz stars and plugs a Randy Brecker CD for $10, calling it 'music to read about meteorites by. He gets gigged for being 'off-topic' and apologizes. (Because Darryl mentions it, I purchase Into the Sun, an enjoyable basically Brazilian music-scape.) The Ron Farrell alledged theft-of-Angra-dos-Reis thread intensifies when Darryl becomes involuntarily involved with this 'Rio Robbery'. I received an unwelcomed letter from Ron Farrell's criminal defense lawyer today and it has prompted me to write the following... Daniel Kagan and Joel Conrado's contribute summary comments. Re: [meteorite-list] OT: Endeavour flying over Tucson
Hi Rob and Dolores, I was out east of town doing some metal detecting and we all had a great view of it as it glided across our Tucson valley. Two folks who were there asking us about our detectors said we should be out in the mountains looking for meteorites, not coins and jewelry. Boy were they amazed when I handed each guy a slice of polished NWA 869 I carry around in my purse for just such occasions! I told them I am the Johnny Appleseed of meteorites. They are still shaking their heads at the gifts, I am sure. Twink Hello Rob, Yes! The low flyby was about 11:15 am (/MST/). It was quite beautiful and elegant as it gently glided through the air. There were hundreds of people gathered on the UA mall to watch for it to come from the east in the direction of the Rincon Mountains and eventually travel onward toward the Tucson Mountains. -Dolores Hill On 9/20/2012 12:20 PM, Matson, Robert D. wrote: Anyone catch Endeavour flying over Tucson today? [meteorite-list] meteorite fall or find is an unforgettable experience
I just read the phrase that a new fall may have faded into obscurity and I had an instant reaction. Since I was so fortunate to have been invited by Jim Kriegh and John Blennert to hunt and map Gold Basin with them I do have a perspective on finding a first meteorite and then many more after being mentored by John and Jim. I think anyone who has been out in the field to find his/her first meteorite in a known or newly discovered find area will agree with me that it is an overwhelming experience. I would imagine that anyone who is so fortunate and talented to find a piece and then more of a fresh new fall must feel REALLY overwhelmed and thankful. It is such a tremendous event that there is no way a new exciting fall or even find will fade. Just ask those of us lucky enough to have made the effort to hunt and been successful, or not, and the collectors who understand this feeling. There are lots of folks who fall into these categories. [meteorite-list] re. $
Hi Steve, I am wondering when I should expect my check for the birthday bash cake, plates, napkins and forks which I was asked to buy. And the cake was not just a simple phone call to the store. As you may remember the logo was sent to me by e mail, I printed it in color, took it to the baker at Safeway along with an etched slice of Brenham to show him how it should look if possible, went to pick the cake up and then delivered it to the Sky Bar. It was fun and I enjoyed doing it so do not understand the problem with my reimbursement which was agreed when I said I would do it. (I then the next night picked up my auction Gold Basin cake I paid for and took it out there as I have done for years.) When I was at Geoff's a few weeks ago I mentioned it to him and he said he was not aware of it so therefore I keep asking you. Hello Paul, Tom, and List, I can full-heartedly second Tom's comments but would like to add that apart from opting for a *stereo microscope* for convenient seeing, it is also vital to purchase or acquire a microscope that allows you to view meteorite thin sections in cross-polarized light! As soon as you have become a microscope addict of those messengers from space, you will wish to go one or several steps further and enjoy all these beauties in their multi-color glory! The microscope I own is one of the less expensive examples but the images you can take with it are stunning. And my digital camera is just one of those rather inexpensive supermarket models you can purchase for ca. 50-100$. In the USA, it was Michael Blood who offered these microscopes a few years ago. Should you want to buy one of these from Michael, you will also need the so-called Tobin Adapter which will allow you to view thin sections in x-pol. light -- a real treat! To let you know what I am talking about, I will send you one one my favorite thin section pics in x-pol. light in a private mail. This pic was taken with my MBS-10 Stereo Microscope and my supermarket 5 Megapix digital camera. .. wishing you good luck searching for an appropriate microscope, Bernd (in Germany) __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] from Bernd
Hello Robert and All, I purchased my smallish 3.9-gram P.V. slice from Cap'n Blood back in 2001 and it still looks as fresh as it did 9 years ago. No rust but I found a golden-colored, yellowish merrillite or apatite (they are both phosphates after all!) crystal at one of these metal-silicate interfaces. Regarding the possibility that this might be rust, ...well, one look at such crystals through a microscope (16x will be sufficient) should reveal their true nature. This yellow crystal in my slice is a genuine, translucent crystal that betrays its nature through its form, its color, its crystallinity (in my slice an elongate prismatic crystal) and the fact that it is embedded in the metal silicate interfacial area. Rust would be bubbly, blisterous, grainy or powdery - it would not be translucent, it would have the typical color of rust (reddish-brown), and, it would protrude from the surface of my slice or if it was really incorporated into the matrix/metal interface, if it did not protrude from the cut surface, it would still be reddish-brown instead of displaying those typical colors of apatite (green, gray with bluish or yellowish tints - at least in hand sample). [meteorite-list] Gold Basin strewn field correction on a post by Carl Esparza
No Carl, you do not have this right at all. What I told you the other night is that Jim Kriegh, John Blennert and I turned in all of our first several hundred specimens to Dr. Kring at the U of A. These were found on BLM land where the field was discovered while hunting for gold. Dolores Hill and Dr. Kring went through these one by one, bagged and labeled them, as Dolores can attest. Twenty per cent of these went to the Smithsonian. The rest were eventually given back to us by Dr. Kring except for a few that the University needed for classification. John, Jim and I also donated several to the University of Arizona Mineral Museum which they still own. As all of us discovered different meteorites in the same strewn field, they were also examined, classified and returned to us except for the slices kept by the U of A for classification. It was a year later that Dr. Kring obtained for Jim Kriegh a permit to hunt on the Lake Mead Recreation Area and Jim, John and I hunted there for a while and were honored to do so. Dr. Kring was interested in knowing whether the strewn field covered the Recreation Area. When we found Gold Basin meteorites at various points even overlooking Lake Mead and walked over lots of flat land and into canyons on both sides of the road into the Recreation area it was obvious that yes, the field extended to Lake Mead. All of these finds on the Lake Mead Recreation area were turned over to Dr. Kring who in turn sent them to the Smithsonian as that had been in the agreement in order to get the permit to hunt on the Recreation area. We had hunted briefly at various spots just to see where they occurred. Jim Kriegh did not ask for the permit to be extended since the information that Dr. Kring needed had been verified. Once the press release came out from the University of Arizona in January 1998, anyone was free to hunt on the original BLM area and we enjoyed many hunts with many of you who became our good friends. Meeting all of you who did hunt with Jim Kriegh or who met him at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show is what made him the happiest and made the find worthwhile to him. Jim was also pleased to have donated his time for the mapping and scientific information his find afforded the meteorite world. [meteorite-list] Fw: Recognizing E-chondrites
Bernd asked me to post this to the list. Twink Monrad Hi Greg S., Jeff Gr., Rob M., and List, Hard to tell in hand sample if a cut slice or an individual is an E chondrite but if the suspect is an EH3 / EL3 or an EH4 / EL4 with clearly discernible chondrules and if it is not too severely weathered, its chondrules will look grayish-white (= enstatite). But this may also be true of Kakangari chondrites (and quite a few others) although the chance to own/find a K-chondrite is extremely remote. Relatively weathered E-chondrites like Dean Bessey's NWA 305* (W3) may be a challenge in hand sample because its chondrules (and matrix . what little matrix there is) look colorful but it is relatively easy when you look at thin sections of such E-chondrites under a microscope in cross-polarized light: they look a little bit . well, boring because they consist almost exclusively of enstatite and enstatite (orthopyroxene) looks grayish-white. No beautiful, colorful interference colors, . just grayish-white chondrules and mineral debris. I also have thin sections of Abee (EH4), Eagle (EL6) but, . same story. Not very spectacular, not very colorful in cross-polarized light. Of course, not very spectacular does not refer to their scientific importance but only to their aesthetic beauty, and, beauty, we all know, lies in the eyes of the beholder(s). * I've uploaded a picture of my NWA 305 endcut and another of my NWA 305 thin section in cross-polarized light so that you should be able to view them by tomorrow (if interested) in the online Encyclopedia of the Met.Bull. Re: [meteorite-list] Jim Smaller
It was interesting the way Jim Kriegh and I met Jim Smaller. We were at the Tucson Gem Show many years ago seeing the big weekend show at the Tucson Community Center. Jim was showing me the gold displays, and he stopped by a wonderful display featuring an old gold mine in Colorado. Jim had lived in CO and went to college in Boulder and loved to hunt for gold so this display interested him greatly. As we were looking at and commenting on this a large man next to us told us that his father had worked at that mine and he was proud to see this at the Show. Somehow we got around to talking about gold hunting in Arizona, which led to meteorite hunting in Arizona, and he figured out who Jim Kriegh was right away. We laughed about that, and planned to hunt together someday but unfortunately we never organized a trip together. Re: [meteorite-list] Richard Norton
Dear Dorothy, Larry and I are so sorry to hear the sad news about Richard. Both of you must have known how much we enjoyed our many times together in Tucson. One of the amazing things about Richard was his way of writing things that gave such feeling to the readers. Two things have always remained in my mind and I wish to share them with others. First of all, I consider myself, Larry, Jim Kriegh and our son Chris and daughter-in-law Bridget to be so very fortunate to have experienced this: We and the Nortons were gathered at our house after dinner and of course Richard was carrying on a lively discussion about meteorites. At one point he asked that the lights be dimmed and he wanted to see my copy of Rocks from Space. He turned to the Epilogue and began reading out loud from his book: In late 1984, I gave a small iron meteorite to astronaut Dick Scobee in commemoration of his visit to the University of Arizona, where he had graduated in engineering. Scobee was scheduled to command the space shuttle early the next year. I suggested, half in jest, that he return the meteorite to its home in space on his next voyage. In a way, it would be a historic event - a meteorite returning to space! A few weeks later a letter arrived from Scobee. He thanked me for the meteorite, calling it a nice little treasure and assured me that he would, indeed, return it at least temporarily to the environment from which it came. On January 28, 1986, the meteorite began its historic return journey but never made it home. Nor did the crew of seven. Their ship was the Challenger. I still get chills when I read this passage and remember Richard reading it to us. Another thing that he wrote which shows his deep thinking and good imagination is from his article in Meteorite magazine May 2001 on the Tucson Show. Thank you, Tucson. Thank you, dealers. Thank you, collectors. Together you pulled off a memorable show. As I watched all of you enjoying yourselves at Jim Kriegh's meteorite party, my thoughts returned briefly to 1969 and the launch of Apollo 11. I was surrounded by hundreds of reporters and delegates from around the world gathered to witness the historic event. Friend and foe alike intermingled, all with a common goal, to emotionally push the Saturn into the sky. Old rivalries faded into insignificance. In that brief moment the world was united as one. Was there not a parallel here, all of us with a passion for rocks from space? I think Richard would forgive me for copyright infringements so that those who do not own both publications might understand how meaningful his simple words were to those of us who read them. Watching Richard work side by side with Dorothy who helped him with his books and did such fabulous illustrations for all sorts of publications was a pleasure. I too was fortunate to be able to hunt with Richard along with Jim Kriegh and John Blennert at Gold Basin. A short funny story, Richard set up a telescope one evening at Gold Basin to photograph something special happening in the heavens that night. At 2:30 AM he with great resignation put away all of his equipment asking us why we had not in advance informed him that the airliners flying into and out of Las Vegas every twenty minutes never quit, that they were interfering with his light or other conditions! Tucson Region In our Tucson paper this morning: Streaking fireball a vivid spectacle in daytime sky By Shelley Shelton Arizona Daily Star Tucson, Arizona | Published: 08.24.2008 A fireball hurtled across the southern Tucson sky in broad daylight Saturday morning, startling and inspiring awe in those who saw it. Chelsey Dever was working a yard sale at her grandmother's house on the Northwest Side around 10:30, she said, when she looked toward the south and saw the ball arcing through the sky. At first I was like, 'Is that an airplane that's on fire?' she said. Then she realized it wasn't. The other two people outside with her at the time didn't see it. Across town, Catherine O'Sullivan was riding her bicycle southbound on Sabino Canyon Road when she looked up and saw it, she said. It looked like someone put a fiery ball in a catapult and launched it, she said. O'Sullivan said she used to work in a planetarium and was guessing the fireball was a bollide a big meteorite. For one to come this close in the atmosphere and be seen during the day, it's just unheard of, she said. Richard Dougall, equipment loan coordinator for the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association, said he was thrilled to see the meteor as he drove south on Kolb Road. It was a fireball. It was beautiful, he said. I've been in seventh heaven all morning. He was so entranced, he almost forgot to pay attention to his driving, he said. When asked how common it is to see such a thing in broad daylight, he responded, Not. I've always wanted to see one in daytime, he said. He's been a member of the astronomy group since 2001 and has seen quite a few at night, he said. This one had the bright reddish-orange color of a road flare, he said. He guessed that it was probably 200 or 300 miles to the south, maybe farther, but said it's always hard to tell. Even though it's unusual to see a meteor or meteorite during the day, Dougall said they are pretty common. The Earth gets struck constantly by meteorites. Constantly, he said. [meteorite-list] true meteorite stories
Funny Michael should write, this just happened this morning. I received a call from a neighbor, who actually lives close to Jim Kriegh's former house. He said that a son of a friend of his brought to his house last night a meteorite. The son had said he heard the soft ball sized meteorite land in the dirt in his back yard in the south part of Tucson and it made a two inch crater. Ron had a photo on his cell phone to show me and came to my house. Ron said his friend took this meteorite to the U of A and was told that it appeared to be lunar and that the friend should take it to Phoenix and leave it and in six weeks he would be told if it were lunar. Already this sounded weird. He did not want to let the lunar out of his sight so Ron showed me this photo. It was black and shiny and had lots of angular and flat edges between the bubbles. I had Ron look over my meteorite collection, let him hold a few, showed him different types and then took him out in my front yard and showed him my collection of slag. He right away said yes that is what his friend had. How the U of A story evolved remains a mystery. I of course sent him home with a sliced Gold Basin with the Sky and Telescope article and photo of Jim Kriegh in the field from 1998. Jim and I also had another true experience. A person came over to Jim's a few years ago and showed us his meteorite. It was a dark rock with possibly Arizona red jasper showing through. Jim gently gave him the sad news and I could not resist asking why he thought it was a meteorite. He said he had seen the Peekskill meteorite on the internet, and it had red streaks too... I will wrap some Gold Basins in aluminum foil and have Clara push a few in here and there after she bakes it but before she frosts it and decorates it per my color photo of the Gold Basin strewn field which I always give her. I make sure she has a rattlesnake by the Gold Basin sign (sign not there any more at the field but the snake may be lurking), a beautiful bright orange sunset over light blue mountains and lots of Joshua trees and little bushes on the ground. Later I add a few of my miniature chocolate truffles that I make to make it look like it did when Jim, John and I first mapped the field and there were GB meteorites all over the place. Twink Monrad Southwest Archaeology Today for Jan. 8, 2008 Southwestern Archaeology Making the News - A Service of the Center For Desert Archaeology - The Possibility that Meteorite Impacts may have Affected Northern Paleolithic Populations is the Topic of Lecture Series in Santa Fe: Truly revolutionary ideas are not very common these days, but one is peeking up above the horizon of North American prehistory. Dr. Richard Firestone, an isotope physicist from the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, has uncovered evidence for cosmic collisions at times that would have influenced humans and their environment. Impacts at 39,000 and 12,900 years ago devastated portions of the northern hemisphere, treating the ice-age megafauna to smaller versions of the type of shock that contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs. The 12,900 BP impact may have changed the course of the cultural as well as natural history of North America, and the possibility is challenging accepted views of Paleoindian archaeology. http://www.cdarc.org/sat/sky_is_falling.pdfhttp://www.cdarc.org/sat/sky_is_falling.pdf __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] James D. Kriegh, Oro Valley's heart and soul, dies at 78
www.azstarnet.com ® Tucson Region James D. Kriegh, Oro Valley's heart and soul, dies at 78 By Danielle Sottosanti Arizona Daily Star Tucson, Arizona | Published: 10.13.2007 The town of Oro Valley lost its historian and a founding father Wednesday when James D. Kriegh died at the age of 78. He was a very gentle man who loved his family, his pets and Oro Valley, said Twink Monrad, 62, Kriegh's friend and neighbor for 31 years. With Kriegh's death, Oro Valley lost his institutional memory and his love of the community, said Town Clerk Kathi Cuvelier. I think that everybody who knew Jim respected him and knew how much ... the community meant to him. He always tried to do the right thing for the town, said Cuvelier, who had known Kriegh since 1980. Kriegh was president and co-founder of the Oro Valley Historical Society and meticulously saved documents from the town's past. It was a labor of love for him, said Dick Eggerding, the society's vice president. He had the patience of a saint. Even at his age, he was always curious and constantly seeking out information. Kriegh was instrumental in creating the town of Oro Valley. Early meetings to incorporate the town were held in Kriegh's living room, his children remember. Kriegh's son Kevin, 45, said he recalls handing out pro-town-incorporation fliers with his father when he was only 8 years old. He was steadfast, totally committed to his values, and achieved change by not being the loudest or the most spectacular but by working doggedly toward a goal and being committed to his principles, Kevin Kriegh said. He and his family live in Minnesota. James Kriegh, who was president of Shadow Mountain Homeowners Association, joined Steve Engle, then president of the Oro Valley Country Club Estates Association, during the 1970s to fight four years of court battles to create the town of Oro Valley. The state Supreme Court ruled to incorporate Oro Valley in 1974. The town was formed on April 15, 1974. Though Kriegh has died, his name and work to preserve Oro Valley's history remains. A park bearing his name is at 23 W. Calle Concordia. DVDs featuring Kriegh telling the story of Oro Valley's creation are at the Oro Valley Public Library, 1305 W. Naranja Drive. The library also has large scrapbooks filled with newspaper clippings and other artifacts of Oro Valley's past. Kriegh's wife, Marjorie, made the scrapbooks before she died in 1991. In addition to his work in Oro Valley, the Kansas native lived a full life with a variety of interests. But, I don't think he ever lost the small-town boy in him from Kansas, Eggerding said. As a young man, he signed a contract with a minor league baseball team, said Kriegh's daughter, Kathleen Buop, 44. He moved to Arizona in the 1950s and was professor emeritus of civil engineering at the University of Arizona. Pima County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry was Kriegh's student at the UA. Since then, their paths often crossed through their governmental work, Huckelberry said. He was a great man, historian, engineer and professor, Huckelberry said. He remembers Kriegh as a patient professor who could explain things quickly and directly. Kriegh loved meteorites and the outdoors, his friends remember, and he even discovered a meteorite field in Northern Arizona in 1995, Monrad said. He spent some of his happiest post-retirement days scouting in remote parts of Arizona with his metal detector and his dog, said Linda Frew, 61, Kriegh's friend of 35 years. Memorial service Sunday A memorial service for Oro Valley historian and founding father James D. Kriegh will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at James D. Kriegh Park, 23 W. Calle Concordia. As Mike Farmer stated, we all like to visit about meteorites so we will look forward to meeting you also. Twink Monrad
Re: [meteorite-list] Weather, weather, weather
Tucson report: mid-morning, 36 out, TV still says heavy snow warning for the Valley (meaning 4 estimate is heavy for us!) today and into evening. Will have to wait and see if they are correct, not much happening yet although the clouds are hanging low. Will be in twenties tonight, but then again Friday it will be sunny and 65 so this will be an interesting interlude, and the desert is beautiful when we get our infrequent and short-lived snow. twink monrad

[meteorite-list] Gilbert Ray Campground in Tucson
Hi to Bob and List, Gilbert Ray Campground phone number 520 883 4200 Regards, Larry and Twink At 12:00 PM 1/29/02 -0600, Bob King wrote: Hello all, Unfortunately I will have to experience Tucson from afar this year. But I want to pass along a place I stayed at last year that was a wonderful bargain and a nice way to experience the fantastic desert environment. My first night was spent in the Rodeway Inn for a mere $99 ;-). As I lay in bed listening to traffic I vowed it would be my last night for that price. In the morning I contacted the kind folks at Gilbert Ray Campgrounds in Tucson Mountain Park (about 20 minutes from downtown Tucson just off Gates Pass Road). For $7 a night I got a quiet campsite near some very pretty hiking trails. My time at Gilbert Ray was at least as memorable as the show itself. The sky was dark, the stars spectacular. The only catch is that you cannot reserve a camp site on the phone. You have to be there in the morning when they open (they open about 8 or 9 a.m. as I recall) and ask for a spot in person. The good news is that you can have that spot for a number of days without needing to renew. When I went it was no problem -- there were a bunch of openings. The modest campground is run by a couple of the friendliest people I met. And the people in camp -- some tent campers like myself, others with RVs -- were quiet at night. I wish I could give you the phone number but I can't find it in all the stuff I brought back. Just call the Tucson Chamber of Commerce or directory assistance. Happy lodgings!
