[meteorite-list] AD: 24 hours left on auctions

2012-07-28 Thread Matthew Smith
There is just 24 hours left on the following ebay auctions, still bargains to be
had on some scarce material, rare types and choice NWA's.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/urban-007/m.html

- Worden (L5, Hammer)
- NWA 3151 (Brachinite)
- NWA 4590 Tamassint (Angrite)
- Murchison (CM2) Allende (CV3)
- Perfect ORIENTED NWA Unclassified
- NWA 2690 (Eucrite)
- NWA 5480 (olivine diogenite)
- NWA 6964, Eucrite described as the Pearls of vesta (Chladni's
Heirs) 0.599g end-cut/half stone. A must-see, these quickly sold out
at $60/g when they originally came up for sale.
- Tatahouine
- BIG NWA Unclassified, ~60% crust, very nice , almost 1 kilo!
- some VERY rare UK/Irish micros: Mooresfort, Aldsworth, Hambleton.

Thanks,

Matt.

[meteorite-list] AD: some NWA, rare types, historic falls and a hammer

2012-07-14 Thread Matthew Smith
In the last couple of weeks I've been through much of my collection, pulling out
some duplicates and other specimens to sell. I've listed them below, including
details on the provenance I have, where possible the original dealers card will
be included. Several of these prices are below my original cost. The link to
images is at the bottom of the mail.

- Worden (L5) 0.5g of cutting dust, a 1997 Hammer stone slices of which can be
seen on the net for $1000/g (Matt Morgan Juris P. Breikss), $30

- NWA 3151 (Brachinite) 56mg, ~6x7mm thin slice, very good surface area for the
mass, excellent preparation (Hupe, with original card) $12

- NWA 3133 (Primitive Achondrite) 0.586g polished part-slice (Hupe) $12

- NWA 4590 Tamassint (Angrite) 52mg fragment (Hupe with original card) $12

- Some carbonaceous micros, you can have both of these for $22: Murchison (CM2)
~0.10g in small fragments (Dave Harris), Allende (CV3) ~0.07g in 2 fragments,
(Dave Harris).

- NWA ORIENTED Unclassified - 7.1g completely oriented individual (Hupe, with
card), it may be small but it's absolutely perfect! Check images. $45

- NWA 2690, Eucrite, paired with Howardite NWA 1929. (Cottingham), 4.9g
part-slice. $45

- NWA 5480 (olivine diogenite, Hupe). 2.5g, end-cut with one polished face. $30

- NWA 6964, Eucrite described as the Pearls of vesta (Chladni's heirs) 0.599g
end-cut/half stone. A must-see, these quickly sold out at $60/g when they
originally came up for sale. $40

- Tatahouine (Wandering Star), 1.0g in two fragments. $10

- NWA Unclassified, ~60% crust, very nice - see link below for photos, pretty
big at 980g and a considerable amount of dark thick crust. Looking on ebay it
seems a lot of people are asking $1/g for this type of material now, so this
should be a bargain at $320

- Lastly some VERY rare UK/Irish micros, $30 for all three: Mooresfort (H5,
1810, Ireland) 10.8mg tiny fragments/dust (Elliott auction), Aldsworth 9.8mg
tiny fragments/dust (Elliott), Hambleton 106.1mg small fragments including
olivine (Elliott)

Pictures available at http://s1243.photobucket.com/albums/gg550/lithobolia/Sale/

I live in the UK, postage to the US for a single small item is approximately $5.
For multiple items or larger pieces I will get a quote on request.

Cheers,

Matt.

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Magazine - Please Contact Me

2011-12-07 Thread Matthew Smith

Sorry to mail this in public but I'm not getting a timely response
otherwise. Please would somebody from meteorite magazine respond to the
mail I sent you on 29th November (and resent at the weekend) as a matter of
urgency.

A couple of weeks ago I decide to renew my subscription using the online
payment form on the met mag website. After filling in the form it claimed
transaction failed and suggested I use another card. I did this twice
more with different cards and got the same response each time. It has
transpired that each transaction was actually successful and I have paid
$47 three times. I mailed asking that any two of the three transactions
were refunded. The statements have now started arriving and I'm currently
$94 out of pocket. I expect a response within 24 hours or I will pursue it
with the card issuers.

Best regards,

Matt Smith.

Two weeks ago four members of the British Irish Meteorite Society (BIMS)

[meteorite-list] AD: Aldsworth, England - 1835 super-scarce historic fall

2011-03-27 Thread Matthew Smith
I have just listed a small fragment of the Aldsworth meteorite on ebay, 7 day
auction, starting at $0.99.

This historic stone fell in Gloucestershire, England in August 1835. I have not
seen a piece available on the web previously. As British falls go, this is about
as scarce as it gets!

The provenance is great (Natural History Museum, London) so don't miss this
chance to add it to your collection.

Incredible and potentially mind blowing. I've had a quick scan through and

terrestrial contamination, etc. I guess this really could be *the* big
news.

Hi Christian and list...

A google search for 'christian anger meteorite son michael' brings up
a met-list post from 2003 '[meteorite-list] Sept. 7, 1753' regarding
Luponnas. Clearly this isn't a mesosiderite, but Dong Ujimqin Qi fell on

[meteorite-list] WANTED: 'Giveaways' for school students

2006-03-05 Thread Matthew Smith

Hi list...

I posted a similar request directly to three list members last Monday,
but only one has gotten back to me so far (thanks Dean!). I'm a
secondary school Science teacher in the UK. I've been asked to plan a
day of space related activities for a small group of our 'gifted and
talented' students.

I intend to spend the afternoon discussing and looking at meteorites and
(as several other list members have done) would like to have small
(maybe 30-40g) stones to give to each student. Dean is happy to supply
unclassified material, but I wonder if any other list members have
enough similarly sized NWA869 stones available? I'm after approximately
20 stones in the 30-40g range. If you have, please feel free to contact
me with a cost including UK shipping. Other affordable (i.e. cheap!)
suggestions would be considered.

Thanks also to all the contributors to the recent thread on meteorite
presentations, some great ideas in there that I will be using!

Thanks,

Matt.

[meteorite-list] BBC Radio 4 - In Our Time - Asteroids (051103)

2005-11-23 Thread Matthew Smith

Hi list...

'BBC Radio 4 - In Our Time - Asteroids - Celestial Bodies from the
Beginning of Time'

This aired on BBC Radio 4 in the UK on 3rd November, but I only came
across it earlier this week and a quick check back suggests it wasn't
mentioned on the list at the time (apologies if it has, and I failed to
spot it). I'm sure it'd be of interest to quite a few of you, although
it barely scrapes the proverbial surface of the topic it did keep me
listening for 43 minutes. Among the contributors is Monica Grady. Melvyn
Bragg does make a comment about only briefly talking about meteorites,
even though Dr Grady has a couple of samples in the studio.

The particularly good news is that it's still available to 'listen
again' from a link on the shows page at:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/history/inourtime/inourtime_20051103.shtml

Enjoy this relatively on-topic and flame free post!

Good idea Lars... I'd be happy to send a cd of this video out to anybody
with a slow connection living in the UK too. Feel free to mail me off
list if your stuck and 3-4 hours at 56k doesn't appeal to you ;)

On a seperate note my request for a sample of Aldsworth earlier in the
week went unanswered, so if anybody reads this post in the archives in
2009 then it is entirely possible I still wont have found any - so
future readers, please mail me if you have a piece available!

Cheers,

[meteorite-list] Wanted - Aldsworth

2005-08-19 Thread Matthew Smith
I posted this request to the meteorite_sale list a couple of days ago,
to avoid using the meteoritecentral list for another wanted post, but I
received no responses.

I would like to obtain a small (maybe 1g depending on cost!) sample of
the Aldsworth meteorite. I am aware that Rob Elliot had some a few years
ago but has since sold out, therefore I know there is some out there!

So if you have a small piece you would be willing to part with, please

[meteorite-list] Wanted: Small Pallasite Sample

2005-07-12 Thread Matthew Smith
Sorry to post this to the list, I've been looking around many sites and
mailed a few people but with no luck...

I'm trying to find a small, but representative (i.e. with olivine
crystal and metal), piece of a stable pallasite (possibly Imilac or
Esquel) which will fit in a small (35mm) membrane box.

If anybody has a piece available, or can direct me to a dealer that has
please mail me off list. I'm hoping to avoid ebay!

Apologies that this mail is in no way valuable input to the list, but
much searching of web sites seems to turn up lot's of unsuitably large
pieces.
