Thank you so much, dear Zelimir, for your relentless engagement

Looking forward with pleasure - Matthias

Dear Meteorite-Central List, IMCA members and all meteorite friends,

As already announced on the leaflets distributed last November in the Munich
show, now that the “St George Brotherhood of the Ensisheim Meteorite Guardians”
was officially dissolved in February this year, the 2016 Ensisheim meteorite
show will be organized on the same basis as last year, namely by the recently
created “Association of Friends of the Ensisheim Meteorite” and under the
auspices of the “ City of Ensisheim” and of the “ Ensisheim Federation of
Associations”.

Please find here preliminary news concerning this 17 th edition of the show.

The place (Regency Palace in Ensisheim), the dates (the week preceding the Ste
Marie show, namely from Friday June 17 to Sunday June 19, 2016), as well as the
usual hall table arrangements, remain unchanged.
Opening hours:
Saturday: 9:30-18:30 (dealers access to the rooms possible from 7:30).

Sunday: 9:30-16:30 (dealers access to the rooms possible from 8.00)

The total number of dealer tables is limited to 58 (52 “regular” and 6
“window-tables” in the consignment room). All tables are equal in size (160 x
80 cm – note the large size). The price per table (not per meter), was slightly
increased with respect to 2015, namely: 1 table = 170 euro; 2 tables = 320
euro; 3 tables = 450 euro; 4 tables = 600 euro….)

All past dealers/guests have full priority to reserve their last year table(s).
Those who did not come last year (2015) had lost their priority and should be
considered as “newcomers”.

For the 2016 booking, we urgently ask our regular guests to do that ASAP,
preferably before the end of April 2016 (slightly flexible deadline).
However, if you already had reserved “implicitly” or “think that you have
reserved”, please APPLY AGAIN (E-mail me in a couple of words) and confirm your
table(s).

If you can’t make it this year, please notify me that you want to cancel. This
is very important and absolutely needed for me to readily assign tables to
those who are on the waiting list.

The organizers will attribute to the newcomers the layout of places within any
of the 3 halls in the most appropriate way so as to meet as many wishes as
possible. Note that the 3 halls are all equivalent, as the public must
inevitably walk through.
Tables are attributed to newcomers, as always, on a “first come, first served”
basis.

For table reservation, just E-mail me (zelimir.gabel...@uha.fr)

To avoid money transfer complications and bank fee, we accept you pay the table
renting, cash. Tables are to be paid on Saturday morning between 7:30 and 9:30
to the treasurer, at the reception desk visible from the entrance door of the
Regency building. Please prepare cash (preferred), though French checks are
tolerated. Credit Cards are NOT accepted.

To pay, the dealers and their assistants must wear their badges (or ask for at
the reception desk).
Badges are attributed on the following basis: 1 table reserved = 1 or 2 badges
attributed; 2 tables, up to 3 badges; 3 tables, up to 4 badges, 4 tables, up to
5 badges…

If more people are officially part of a table team, they can either be
considered as “public” and pay 4 euro as regular entrance fee, or pay 10 euro
that includes the entrance during the dealer’s day on Friday and a badge.
For this being possible, I’ll need very soon the full names of all the dealers
and their assistants, so we can prepare the corresponding badges in time.

People without badges are not considered as dealers, can’t occupy tables, nor
are allowed to sell meteorites elsewhere within the buildings or on the Regency
square.

Maps and traveling indications could be found soon on the Ensisheim city web
site:
www.ville-ensisheim.fr .

The nearby hotels remain "Domaine du Moulin", “Les Loges de l’Ecomusée », "Niemerich" and
"Cheval Blanc".
More info about their location and characteristics (phone, fax, e-mail, web
sites) are given on the official show flyer that is now ready and that you can
find on the city web site from next Monday April 25.
I can also send the flyer right now (mail) upon request.

IMPORTANT: everybody must arrange for his own accommodation!
If you call, they all do speak English and German.

Friday June 17 is the "DEALER’S DAY" devoted for tables/booth set up.
The Regency halls are exclusively open (13:30 – 18.00) to dealers wearing their
badges, and NOT to the public.
Note that dealers can also install their tables on Saturday morning (7:30 –
9:30) after having collected their badges at the reception desk (entrance of
the Regency palace) and pay their tables to the cashier present on the desk,
prior to climb the stairs.

On Friday, after the Regency rooms closure (18:00

It wasn't caused by wrestling a 5 meter long gator attempting to rip a
meteorite out of his jaws. He wasn't out prowling for gastroliths and I don't
believe he had a cache of a new class of meteorites in his gizzards. I didn't
have to outrun him at 80 kph across swamps, pinelands and through the
palmettos. He never sunk his teeth into my juicy leg. I didn't even, have to
use my GPS unit to prop open his jaws to withdraw my shredded leg. There was
not a full row of his teeth ever embedded in my femur. Not particularly
interesting TV material.

I'd enjoy writing a full length meteorite hunting fantasy sometime. Hope there
will be no further opportunities to do it :-)

Great idea, Darryl. To detach the moon-stone by impact the moon had
first been touched by a "star" itself. Next the other stars followed
(without impact, fortunately).

Hi,

Meteorites have finally hit the big time as it regards at least one measure:
CHRISTIE'S, the largest and most esteemed auction house in the world, will be
conducting its first dedicated catalog auction of Meteorites on Wednesday,
April 20th in South Kensington, London.

The catalog looks smart <--- (had to throw in a Briticism) and it most
certainly is, as Alan Rubin had a hand in the creation of the descriptive copy.
The images by and large are not so bad as well.

To see a PDF copy of the catalog, go to the following link and click on the
e-catalogue option, and you will see the PDF option

http://www.christies.com/salelanding/index.aspx?intSaleID=26216

There are close to 80 meteorites in the sale. Several have no reserve. Many have museum
provenance. The Zagami main mass—it's here. As is the only "starstruck" lunar
specimen

Academy Award winning actor Kevin Spacey (L.A. Confidential, American Beauty)
had a piece of the Moon in his pocket as he sang “Fly Me to the Moon” on
November 9, 2014 at the Thelonious Monk Institute’s “All-Star Gala Concert: A
Tribute to President Bill Clinton” at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
Twenty-two other luminaries touched this same piece of the Moon that evening
and signed their names to a document that states, “I touched the Moon at the
Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz All Star Jazz Salute to Bill Clinton.”
Signatories include Herbie Hancock, Pharell Williams, Goldie Hawn, Don Cheadle,
Dianne Reeves and Quincy Jones…and, of course, Mr. Spacey. (President Clinton's
secret service detail wouldn't allow him to touch it—which was rather odd in
the scheme of things.) The winning bidder receives the Moon touched by the
stars as well as the documentation. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this
lot will benefit the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, the world’s largest
non-profit devoted to nurturing excellence in jazz.

All the best / Darryl

Top 10 Biggest Meteor Strikes in History

Our beloved blue planet gets pelted with debris from space all the time
but, since most of it burns up or break apart in the atmosphere, it's
usually not a problem. Even when one does make it to the ground, they
are rarely much larger than a small rock, minimizing the damage they're
capable of inflicting.

Then, of course, there is that once-in-an-eon occasion where something
very very large makes it through intact, and this can really do some
damage. Fortunately, such hits are extremely rare, but they are worth
noting, if only to serve as reminders of the power of the stars to undo
the normal routine here on Earth, with little more than a few minutes'
warning. So where — and when — did these monsters hit? Let's take a
look at the geological records, and see.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Trying to Get Back into my Collection

Merry Christmas Happy Holidays to all.

It's been along time since I posted but life seems to be slowing down for
me so I have some time to revisit some of the more expensive hobbies that
I have.

For those of you that don't know me I'm the odd ball that only collects
meteorite spheres and they have to be 50 mm in diameter.

Originally I never thought I would be able to get more then a couple but
in a very short time I was able to obtain 19 different meteorite or
meteorite related specimens.

If you're not familiar with my collection you can visit my web site at
http://home.roadrunner.com/~bobadebt/

It's been along time since I updated the site but it's still there.

Anyway, I think I may have some time to work on expanding my collection.

My premise was to have a specimen from each of the basic categories and
for the most part I have succeeded, but I still need an H4, H6 and an IIAB
Iron.

In addition to meteorites, I have cut some very interesting material such
as Libyan Glass, a brick from the Nininger Museum and a huge Canyon Diablo
Graphite Nodule.

All of these were unplanned additions and despite that some are not
meteorites they add character to my collection

I used to offer cutting/selling services in exchange for material but I
don't know if I will have that much time.

However, if you have something (not represented by my collection) that you
need processed contact me and we could discuss the details.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Beni-Mhira.com Grand Opening !

After many days of intensive research in the field, we are happy to
present you the result of our hunting on http://www.beni-mhira.com

The meteorite fell in january 2001 near the city of Beni-M'Hira, 40
kilometers east of Tatahouine. It was a relatively discreet event in the
meteorite community (nobody talked about it on the meteorite-list and what
is on the market ?) compared to some other meteorite falls like Ben Sour,
Bassikounou…

We decided to go back to Tunisia and locate the strewnfield, note the
testimonies of witnesses and draw the map of the ellipse.

We met a 85 year old sheppard who saw the main mass fall a few meters from
him and which dug a one meter large crater. We collected many information
about the deflagration and less on the fragmentation details.

Our intensive search led to about 150 stones in a 5 sq. kilometers area
most of which are complete and in pristine conditions. We walked a total
of 600 kilometers for three meteorite collectors and three expeditions.

Most of the specimen you'll buy on http://www.beni-mhira.com
will be sold with their gps coordinates and photo in-situ.

In a few time, we will display the map of the strewnfield in a book with
also the story of our meteorite hunting in Beni-M'Hira strewnfield,
anecdotes and many photos of the finds.

Prices start at 3$/g up to 5$/g. Free shipping from 100$.

Taking into consideration the six Highlights from Naveen Jain's meteorite

8.5 million is a believable figure considering the world class collection
belongs to multi-billinaire, Naveen Jain.

To keep the record straight, the NWA 5000 main mass appraised for over
$14.5 million by an IRS recognized appraiser and was insured for a record
breaking 9.6 million while on public display. Unlike a diamond, NWA 5000
is worth more cut into small pieces than offered as a whole. Used in
jewelry, it could yield way over 20 million but I have avoided such offers
until recently.

But who is counting? It scientific value is priceless and I would like to
see large portions preserved or on public display. Despite a common rumor
that I received the stone for next nothing, a record amount was spent in
its acquisition breaking yet another world record.

Hello Listers

I came across an article about a meteorite collector and read that he has
over 8.5 million dollars worth of meteorites, making it the most valuable
meteorite collection ever privately owned, man I would love to get my eyes
on that collection. But I got to think and I know there are some big time
key plays in the meteorite world and I was wondering would come of the
dealers collections trump the 8.5 million mark. I mean we have the NWA
5000 that was being sold for 6 million or more and if that hadn't been
sold yet would put a large amount in the Hope collection. At any rate
would be interesting to hear what peoples collection are worth or even
which Institution or Museum have the most expensive meteorite collection
minus Antarctica meteorites. Down below is an section taken from the

Re: [meteorite-list] $8.5 million — arguably the most valuable meteorite collection ever privately owned.

2013-06-26 Thread Matthias Bärmann

It seems to be an ambitious collection without any doubt - may it be worth
8.5 million $ (Business Journal), 5 million $ (Wired), or more, or less.

In any case, these are estimates done by magazines which are far from
meteorites, far from science, even far from this special market. Not really
serious. In fact I miss an article dedicated to Mr. Jain's collection by one
of the really serious meteorite magazines.

To be not misunderstood: I find it great when an entrepreneur like Mr. Jain
dedicates his interest to meteorites. Wonderful, we all feel with him. But
the world of meteorites is enormous, incredibly rich and much more
comprehensive than 'Wired', 'Business Journal' and also single collectors
may think.

Best regards
Matthias

P.S. Adam, this is a remarkable slice of NWA 5000 without any doubt.

Taking into consideration the six Highlights from Naveen Jain's meteorite
collection pictured in the mentioned article I must confess that it's
quite
difficult for me to find any reason why this should be the most or at least
one of the most important/valuable private meteorite collection/s - not to
talk about the really important museum collections.

Used in
jewelry, it could yield way over 20 million but I have avoided such
offers
until recently.

But who is counting? It scientific value is priceless and I would like to
see large portions preserved or on public display. Despite a common rumor
that I received the stone for next nothing, a record amount was spent in
its acquisition breaking yet another world record.

Hello Listers

I came across an article about a meteorite collector and read that he has
over 8.5 million dollars worth of meteorites, making it the most valuable
meteorite collection ever privately owned, man I would love to get my
eyes
on that collection.
Down below is an section taken from the
article.

Hi Paul,

Raspberry Tony (Himbeertoni) is a jesting and cuss word of the
Austro-Bavarian language.
The etymology is absolutely unclear, neither old references are found.
Schmeller's Bavarian dictionary of 1827 doesn't know him yet.

A Raspberry Tony is a person of very limited intellect, that is so
excessively good-natured, that he put up with everything and is easy to
short-change.

There are in my opinion three possibilities of the origin:

Either it's a literary character (of a forgotten piece),

or it's the characterization by profession - somebody who is of such an
imbecility, that he can earn his living only by collecting and selling
raspberries,

or it's a humorous derivation from the Strawberry George (often appearing as
the boon companion of the Raspberry Tony).
The Strawberry George in turn is a mishearing of the archbishop, In German
Erzbischof which sounds similar to Erbeerschorsch. (Erdbeer(e)
(Groundberry) is the Strawberry, Schorsch is the Bavarian form of
George).

Best!
Martin

Hi Fred,

Exactly and Wow!
With your Bensour it seems that just the same had happened!
Has also the black rim!

My guess at the time I got it, was simply a matter of primary fusion crust
(the brownish one) and secondary fusion crust (the darker one). Could it
be
a matter of altitude where it was formed? Speed temperature of
fusion?...

There we definitely have to ask our experts of aerodynamics and chemistry
here.

To me it's evident, because the black crust lips over the brown one, that
that brown on the back must have been formed before the crust on the apex.

There are going things in flight on the back of the stones remember
the

Tamdakht-Couscous or the 12.5kg-flat heat-shield, which had also such
fragments incorporated in the skin..

Now these color-crusts with Chelyabinsk (and Tissint).

Here, look, our most shocking example!
Is something for Jan, Menno or Rob,
Because half of the stone is almost:ORANGE!

Has 63.55g

Hello there,

we have to share with you a pretty exciting observation.
It was here already on the list, that some of you found on the first-pick
Chelyabinskis places with a brownish, nevertheless fresh fusion crust.
That

phenomenon btw. you had sometimes also on a few Tissints, there the brown
crust was even translucent (were horribly difficult to sell, because
people

watching the photos were skeptical, thought, they wouldn't be fresh, but
weathered - and that, where no iron is present in Tissint to rust).

Many of you blossomed during the last 3 months into true
Chelyabinsk-experts,
so please, pay attention to those two individuals and tell us your
opinion:

Fortunatly the criminals have been iddentified and one have admited

We and the Police have enough evidences and witnesses, that will lead the

We offered them to give back the material and we would not press charges,

The French Police will involve FBI and INTERPOL in the next days as they

Very sorry to post the following OT - I tried to email Count Guido but my
message did not get through. Well, it is not completely OT because there was
a discussion yesterday on the list about how the asteroid could have looked
like, in comparison, when entering earth's atmosphere. In this context I
mentioned it could have easily looked like the old building I am living in,
in size. Count Deiro answered friendly, and well, here we go:

Thanks a lot, Guido. Hope that finds you well.

O yes, having been found by the storks I do really feel honored. It's always
a pleasure watching them circling around the building and listening in warm
summer nights to their very special beak-percussion.

They are with us since we live here. In the first years they disappeared in
October for several months, perhaps to Spain, perhaps to Africa. But during
the last years they prefer to stay here also over the winter, visiting from
time to time the stork's station in Salem, Lake of Constance

which is not far from us.

I live in an old castle - not a very big one - and I guess: it's more or

It might be hard to imagine what a 55-foot diameter ball or rock would
look like.
I searched Google Images for a 50-foot anything, and came up with this,
which seemed fitting:

One suggestion: if you would all keep one sending a link to the rebuttal
I wrote to all those news services and be insistent about it, maybe some
of them will actually read it and maybe learn something. Here is a link to
it:

And please feel free to send it over and over again!
I have already done it more than once but if they all get it over and over

Hello list
NWA 6258 comes a long way from 2009 when I see it for the first time. My
first feeling, when I see this meteorite inside was that this is like
Portales Valley. Chondritic or primitive material submerged in iron, lots
of iron.

Last year Dr Irving finished classification and this was second surprize.
Enstatite chondrite type L with that ammount of iron. What a great
specimen.

NWA 6258 is EL Impact melt breccia with S6! and only W1. TKW is 1088g but
this include one complete specimen 822g (not yet cut) so except this one,
40g type specimen donated to labs and cut loses I dont have much for sale.
All available specimens are listed on my page. Especially I want recommend
stunning etched full slices with lots of iron and troilite.

BluffImpactites

Hello Everyone,

I have just posted on eBay some amazing slices and endcuts from the
Kentland and Glover Bluff craters and even if not in the market, very much
worth checking out.

There are several different varities of Kentand Impactites to include
awesome melt slices with abundunt metal inclusions. The meal-rich melt
pieces strongly resemble Sudbury melt and feature clast floating in
flowing rivers of melt. It is in those clast that there are several flakes
of nickel positive metal. There is also a fossiiferous-type melt rock
which shows a melted matrix with twisted fossils and even Pseudotachylite
veins!!

The Glover Bluff material is one of the most beautiful impactites I have
ever seen and the pictures speak for themselves. There are bands of
colorful seemingly flowing sandstone with semi-opaque quartzite clast of
all sizes and shapes. These are the largest and nicest slices available
for sale so dont miss an opportunity to add them to your collection.

2012-10-14 Thread Matthias Bärmann

Hello Bernd,

how much count 4 planetary days of delay against heavenly periods? Nothing.

Unfortunately never having had the pleasure to know Jim and Twink
personally, I underline your intention. What attracts me much is the obvious
constellation of innocence and passion which led them to discovering the
strewnfield of Gold Bassin. And to communicate with the meteorite community
far more.

Jim and Twink and companions: the meteorite world owes you so much! May it

Hello Jim, Hello All,

I don't know how that could happen but it did happen! Each year after Jim's
passing away, on October 10, I wrote a few lines on Meteorite Central to
commemorate this great, modest man! Not so this time . I had simply
overlooked the entry in my calendar! But I know Jim will not be angry with
me. He knows I did not do this on purpose! Wednesday, October 10, 2012 was
already the fifth year that our esteemed Jim Kriegh left us for good to live
among the celestial messengers that he loved and cherished like we all do!
So . if you can spare a minute or two, remember Jim!

Jim, Twink, John, and Dr Kring, it was their unremitting efforts that
gave Gold Basin and its meteorites a place in the Hall of Meteorites!

Best wishes,

Bernd

And, January 1998 is the month the University of Arizona made the press
release about a certain retired U of A civil engineering professor from
Oro

Valley, Arizona who had inadvertently discovered a new meteorite field
called Gold Basin. It stated that Professor Jim Kreigh and John Blennert
and Twink Monrad had been involved in the mapping of the field for two

friends and I think I can state for John and myself that we still cherish
our new friends that we met at Tucson Gem and Mineral Show February 1998.
I wish we could repeat all of the hunting trips joined in by many of our

Team Meteorite:

The archives for the Meteorite-List don't go back, back, back all the way
to

the beginning, only to April, 2004.

Wouldn't it be great if the rest of these writings were still lurking
somewhere in cyberspace, just lost under an avalanche of Facebook
deletions, but waiting to be found?

What a treasure trove of contemporary meteorite history they would be- the
successes, scandals, discoveries and adventures we've collectively
experienced and shared, remembering the enemies we've tormented and the
friends we've praised.

Art Jones opened this venue sixteen years ago.

Our first Meteorite Forum was held just days after the ALH 84001
announcement on August 6, 1996. As I recall, there were only 5 or 6 of us
on

the first chat which included Paul Harris and Jim Tobin of Meteorite

others who escape my memory for now. - Michael Blood

It is the entire m-list archive from Feb, 1998. I can't imagine that any

Meteorite List - Month of February, 1998.

Phile Bagnall kicks off the month writing about Ron Farrell's latest folly
(those list members not familiar with Mr. Farrell can 'google'
for a bio). Phil wonders if he too is a member of the vast 'meteorite
community conspiracy' Farrell believes is responsible for his prediciment.

Frank Stroik (Dept. of Geology Geophysics, University of Wyoming) was
our

first and all-time best resident genius/teacher and he discusses CI
Chondrites with Martin Horejsi. Others join in making this the longest
thread of the month. Great science here!

Ron Baalke opined frequently on the list. Here he correctly argues against
J.E. Bradenburg's paper claiming Mars as the CI parent body.

There's a long thread about Holbrook. Baalke sees no added value in slices
of Holbrook v. individuals. Others cite 'cut loss' and the rarity of
Holbrook specimens 'big enough to even bother slicing' as factors in
legitimately demanding higher per/gram cost for slices.

Matt Morgan's 'tip of the day' is to spray Krylon on Gao slices to create
a

3-D effect.

Typical of the times, this list existed to help and inform the community
and
was growing rapidly. Jim Hurley seeks a sponsor for MetSoc membership.
John

Blennert clicks on 'subscribe' to join the met-list.

Darryl Pitt is proud to have yet another Grammy Award winner in his stable

Darryl becomes involuntarily involved with this 'Rio Robbery'. I received

2012-09-29 Thread Matthias Bärmann

Stefan, these are bad news for the whole meteorite community. Over the years
Chladni's Heirs have enriched public and private collections with surprising
and astonishing new material in a dense rhythm.

And even more: you've always provided serious and precise information about
your meteorites, and splendid photos. The finish of slices was perfect as
well as perfectly fitting to the respective material. This high standard
charakterized also the packing and sending, the realization of the whole
deal. And last not least: you took time to answer any kind of question.

Simply spoken: Chladnis Heirs counted to the higest reputable providers
worldwide of this dramatically rare and exclusive stuff. Even simpler: you
adopted this certain name quite rightly and you beared it with honor.

What a pity, now! Well, we lose Chladnis Heirs, but not the single
protagonists. I only can say: thank you Stefan, Martin and not to forget
Andi - there were three musketeers at the beginning! Good luck to all of
you, and especially Martin: I wish you a fast and entire recovering!

All the very best, guys. Certainly we'll stay in contact.

For more than two years there had been differences of opinion, especially
about our public image and the division of labor within Chladni's Heirs.
In
the end, in spite of a lot of discussions, we could not agree on
necessary

changes. That is why business has more or less been in abeyance since
January. Since Martin had told me that he would take some time out
because

of illness, I wanted to give him time for a final decision until his
recovery.

For a few weeks I myself have already undertaken preparations to relaunch
my own business (SR Meteorites) because life continues.
I am determined to continue providing to all collectors the service and
the quality you are used to. I look forward to many new and interesting
meteorites and new challenges. And my enthusiasm is unbroken.

Finally I would like to thank everyone for their support over the past
years!

With best wishes,

Dear list members,

After a long time, I've updated my web site with a completely new design
and

some fresh items in the catalogue. There are not so many meteorites in the
catalogue which are really new, almost all pieces came from my
old range of pieces. In the coming weeks and months, I'll present some
newly

classified meteorites with some special sales.

A further web site is dedicated to the famous Moon and Mars boxes.

stones and

minerals. You can take a quick look at the fossil workshop in Erfoud,
meteorite hunters, the famous vanadinite mines in Mibladen, fossil mines,
ghost towns deep in the desert, and more. It is filmed in stereoscopic 3d,

Svend Don, Alex, Bernd, Graham and finally: listoids -

I can only agree with the arguments and impressions my previous speakers
already underlined.

For me personally this Henbury monograph is highly attractive, not only
because the science facts are included on a high and actual level, but also
historical and ethnological aspects such as Aldermans sketches, old
photographs and correspondances, the presence of Henbury in the most
important museum collections and not at least the traces which can be found
in Aboriginal mythology and art.

Not to forget a large number of great pics of a series of wonderful, at
large publically unknown and breathtakingly beautiful Henbury individuals.

It already seems to be indicated that the 600 copies will be sold out soon.
So take your chance.

Best as ever,

Hello,

I find myself needing to ask for help from my meteorite community. One of
my children have died. My daughter Sarah died last Sunday, she died in her
sleep from a complication with her prescription drugs and her breathing
just stopped. Hopefully she died without even knowing. Her husband tried
to resuscitate her. She was only 24 years old.

I find in very hard to work now, and all packages and such things will be
slow, but will go out as I can manage. There are many current expenses
that are beyond my ability at the moment and I am trying to take care of 2
households for the time being. As well as all the expense of funeral,
living, and such for her extended family. It is a devastating tragedy.

First, I am not asking for a direct donation. I would prefer you purchase
something from my shop. If there is nothing in my ebay store that
interests you, if you so desire, please by all means send a donation to my
paypal account. The paypal address is mikew...@gilanet.comPlease mark
as Sarah Cottingham Jordan Memorial Fund

In addition, I just wanted people to know why I will be slow in answering
any emails that have been sent to me concerning meteorites, or meteorite
business.

Thanks for Your Kind Consideration

Stuart, List

1. A blimp (technically called a pressure airship) is
a powered, steerable, lighter-than-air vehicle whose
shape is maintained by the pressure of the gases
within its envelope. A blimp has no rigid internal
structure; if a blimp deflates, it loses its shape.

2. A rigid airship has a framework surrounding one
or more individual gas cells, and maintains its shape
by virtue of its rigid framework and not the pressure
of its lifting gas.

3. A zeppelin is a rigid airship manufactured by a
particular company, the Luftschiffbau Zeppelin of
Germany (the Zeppelin Airship Construction
Company), which was founded by Count Ferdinand
von Zeppelin.

4. A semi-rigid airship, like a blimp, maintains its
aerodynamic shape from internal gas pressure, but
it has a partial rigid frame, usually in the form of a
keel, which supports and distributes loads and
provides structural integrity during maneuvering.
The modern Zeppelin NT, such as the Eureka, is
a semi-rigid airship rather than a blimp.

5. A dirigible is any lighter-than-air craft that is
both powered and steerable (as opposed to free
floating, like a balloon). Blimps, rigid airships,
and semi-rigid airships like the Zeppelin NT are
all dirigibles.

Phil, List,

As the sarcastic individual who suggested a
need for Blimp Patches, I apologize. It is, literally,
a Zeppelin, built by the Zeppelin company in
Friedrichshafen, Germany, home of the original
Zeppelins. At 246 feet long, she stretches 15
feet longer than a standard Boeing 747 and 50
feet longer than the largest commercial blimps
flying today. It is named Eureka, nicely matching
the history of Sutter's Mill. Maybe the name will
bring good luck.

http://www.airshipventures.com/about
Unlike the original Zeppelins, it is a semi-rigid
design, lacking a full envelope frame like the old
ones. However, it is made of carbon fibre and
aluminum, has very sophisticated motive control,
with vectored thrust and fly-by-wire controls, and
has incredible maneuverability.

That said, trying to maneuver close to the ground
in that terrain in a weightless craft almost as long
as a football field is a daunting prospect. All old
airshipmen know the dangers are near the ground,
not in the sky.

Yes, Matthias,

Fly by wire is the only way it could be operated by a single pilot. The
reason being the number of articulated engines and thruster all having near
infinite range of action. This, coupled with the need to coordinate the
rudder and elevator surfaces to control attitude and direction, makes flying
an airship a don't talk to me now I'm busy kind of moment.

Steering one of these beasts, without computerization and FADEC (automatic
engine control) is akin to throwing the wheel hard over on a Mississippi
steam boat to avoid a snag, while ringing the engine telegraph to change the
rpm of the side paddle wheels to the black gang below. Slow and probably
ineffective.

Airships, unless underway with considerable air speed, are as sluggish in
responding to orders as a drunken sailor in a vat of molasses.

Now, if anyone wants to rent me and a turbocharged R4 Robertson helicopter,
you spot the meteorite and I'll put you where you can lean out and click it
on the cane. $450.00 an hour and sign a waiver holding my estate harmless if
I kill us. I think we could manage to blow the grass flat in different
directions.

Best to all,

Guido

Interesting though these are likely three different types of human
weathering (wearing).

w1: Here's a nice picture of the Canyon Diablo (Camp Verde iron) piece
in which listmembers can appreciate these comments regarding possible
handling (rubbing, perhaps along these line suggested something similar
to a tradition of receiving sacrament (Eucharist (sp?)) some Mexican
Catholic churches when a transmuted plaster-Jesus is kissed by nearly
everyone attending lined up single file - causing wear).

http://books.google.com/books?id=xCGpmoJl2dgCpg=PA118

w2: The perceptions of wear on an ancient, recovered find are of a
different nature than one with fresh fusion crust and flowlines plus,
over the stony olivine crystals of the Glorieta Mountain (Pojoaque
iron) piece what was claimed to be a thick, possible fresh fusion
crust. But as you say they could show different sorts of handling, in
a case of a 61 kilos Camp Verde, not likely to have been carried about!

w3: As for Anoka (Havana beads), as well as the Egyptian stuff, that's
a different type of forming and wearing than Pojoaque and Camp Verde

- the work in the literature and a poster on the Smithsonian website a
few years ago pairing some of those to the Anoka meteorite suggests
that the Smithsonian/UCLA/Iowa has access to two of the mentioned beads.

We conducted optical microscopy, SEM ele-mental and phase mapping,
electron microprobe analy-ses, LA-ICP-MS and INAA analyses of Havana
and Anoka for comparison.

Camp Verde comes to mind, of which one side, the backbone as

could hardly
have been carried around by a medicine man. Since I have first seen it
I have

I would like to draw some attention to the carried in a medicine

I have been selling Canyon Diablo Spheroids for years. Now, my supply is
VERY low and I am going to have to reluctantly raise the price. HOWEVER, I
will keep the price the same for the next 24 hours as shown on my website.

There are two sizes .7 mm and 1.4 mm.

http://www.catchafallingstar.com/canyondiablo.htm

I am limiting this sale to 18 total grams. When 18 grams have been sold
or 24 hours has passed, the sale will be over.

Most of you have probably bought these from me over the years but there
may be a few new collectors who would like to take advantage of their
dwindling availability.

Thanks, everyone.

Dear members,
I am very appriciate that Martin put so many links regarding the new fall
in Huangzhong, Qinghai province, China. I was in the falling area from
16th, to 18th Feb,and had collected the informaitons together with the
pictures.
I noticed there must be some mistake in the media reporting. Such as
hundreds of meteorites were falling, that is not true! There are only 4
pieces were recovered until now, and except the biggest one, which is
12.5kg landing on a mountain top of Xiaosigou village, the other 3 pieces
were all bronken while landing. what I have seen is there are hundreds of
fragments, not individuals! And also the expert from Beijing Planetarium
said he had found crystal things in the mitrix is also a big funny joke!
There is one piece landed on the concrete road of Yehong village, and made
a shallow crater (please see the photoes in the following link), and what
the expert collected is a broken piece from the concrete road, and the
crystal things he said should be the sand and quartz in the concrete. I
have purchased several hundred grams of fragments, and also found there is
some concrete pieces included, because their colors are very close and
villagers cannot

distinguish concrete pieces from meteorite fragments.
Here is the link of my photoes, copyright is reserved, please do not use
them without my permittion.

List,

Here is our announcement of this year's Ensisheim show.

- John

___

Dear list members,

I am sending this on behalf of Zelimir Gabelica who cannot be reached by
email at this moment. Sorry for all of you who have had no luck getting in
touch with him. Zelimir is currently in a rehabilitation center where he is
recovering from a pulmonary embolism after coronary artery bypasses.
Unfortunately there are no internet facilities in this hospital where he
will be staying for several more weeks.

As co-chair of the Ensisheim-Meteorite show with Zelimir and Jean-Marie
Blosser (Grand Maître of the Confraternity of the Ensisheim Meteorite
Guardians), let me take this opportunity to confirm to all of you that
Ensisheim 2012 is well scheduled for this June.

Below you will find a brief summary of the main features of this 13th
edition.

Show dates:

Saturday June 16 to Sunday June 17, 2012.

Friday June 15 is the usual dealer's day devoted to table and booth set
up. The Regency Palace rooms are open exclusively to dealers (14:00 - 18:00)
and not to the public. Dealers may also continue to set up their booths on
Saturday morning (7:30 - 9:30) before the official show opening at 9:30.

The Regency Palace rooms close on Friday at 18:00 and the opening ceremonies
then start on the main square: inaugural address, enthroning ceremonies,
friendly drink. before the dinner party (more details in later emails).

Show theme: Historical meteorites

This year, we have three plenary lectures related to this theme:

1/ Dr. Ludovic FERRIERE, Curator of the rock collection at the Natural
History Museum in Vienna, Austria (Lecture's title to be communicated later)
2/ Mr Jean-Marie BLOSSER (The history of the Ensisheim meteorite)
3/ Dr. Alain CARION (The new French meteorite of Draveil)

Table reservation procedure

As every year, please write to Zelimir for table reservation at his usual
email address (zelimir.gabel...@uha.fr). Please, can all of you who already
reserved and those who are planning to make table reservation, confirm with
him again and/or write to him but only at the end of March, when he will be
able again to get in contact with all of you?

Sorry for this trouble but it will greatly facilitate this administrative
task when Zelimir will be home again! I thank you very much for your
understanding.
Needless to say, the fun and friendly show ambience is guaranteed again
simply by your presence for this 2012 Ensisheim-Meteorite!

More news later.

My best wishes to all,

Sabine

Common names of wild big cats cause a lot of confusion. The largest and
most common one is the Puma concolor, formerly known as Felis concolor.
It's the mountain lion (cat), cougar, puma, etc. There are very dark
colored strains of P. concolor but they are extremely rare. Pumas can be
found almost anywhere except in the east where the only breeding
population lives in Florida, where they are commonly called panthers.

Panthera onca is the jauguar, or panther, the second largest big cat. They
have the strongest jaws and biggest teeth of the large wild cats. They're
the only head-biters of the wild cats, puncturing skulls with their big
canines. The other cats kill you by chewing through your neck. Most P.
onca are spotted, like their African leopard cousins, Panthera pardus. P.
oncas can be found straying into AZ and NM, with a rumored breeding
population south of Tucson.

Black panthers (Panthera onca) have a genetic melanistic mutation giving
them their color. Established breeding populations of black-mutated P.
onca are very rare in the wild. Your chances of encountering one in the
wild in the U.S. are pretty much zero. But watch out for Texas mountain
lions, they'll pounce and rip your jugular out in a jiffy.

Hi,

For purposes of clarity, Dave was not the benefactor referred to in the
piece and I was not on the ground In Morocco searching for this meteorite.
Neither Dave or myself spoke to the wrtier. The aspect of the Natural
History Museum's press release which referenced our role in this
acquisition was constrained to the following:

Darryl Pitt of the Macovich Collection in New York City, and Dave
Gheesling of the Falling Rocks Collection in Atlanta, sold the main mass
to the Natural History Museum. Pitt finally acquired the meteorite after
having heard rumors as to its existence over a period of weeks. With
every lead turning into a dead end, he nearly gave up when he received a
fateful phone call. Pitt reached out to his friend Gheesling to assist
with the financing, and shortly thereafter reached out to the NHM. Said
Pitt, It is both humbling and an honor to be part of this meteorite's
journey, and the Natural History Museum is the perfect final residence.
Added Gheesling, Both Darryl and I enjoy giving talks to kids about
meteorites, and while we could have earned far more selling this specimen
elsewhere, there was no discussion of this historic specimen going
anywhere other than a major museum for future generations to enjoy.

Yes, we could have earned far more selling this elsewhere, yet we agreed
this belonged in a major museum. It was a donor of the Natural History
Museum, who prefers to remain anonymous, who helped make the acquisition
possible.

Dear list-members,

let us contribute to the discussion about that new Martian fall, which
certainly belongs to one of the most exciting events in all our
collector-lives, in sharing some pictures of a stone, which is the most
amazing example of this new fall, we have seen so far.

The specimen is a completely fusion crusted individual with a weight of
147

grams.
The pristine and extremely clean crust displays a fantastic deep-black
gloss.
Furthermore it shows indications of a slight orientation, if you note the
lipping running over the edge to the left.

Simply enjoy!

Also, I noticed a new trend in selling mets on eBay. Most are selling for
