Re: [meteorite-list] [IMCA List] Dave Gheesling

2020-11-12 Thread Mattias Bärmann via Meteorite-list

Can't believe that. I bear Dave in my mind as full of life, a man of
impressive strength, openess, friendliness.

We met a few times in Ensisheim, several years ago. Remember him
together with his daughter Maddie, playing around him like a joyous
little child-planet around the father-sun.

I have here an oriented stone-meteorite named "crown of flames". It was
first with Svend Buhl, then with Dave, finally it came back to Germany
and made it to my cabinet. It still was, but even stronger will be an
inspiration to contemplate the ways we go.

Farewell. All my very best wishes to the family.

Speaking for my entire family, you will never be forgotten brother.

All our love and thoughts are with the Gheesling and Sutton families.

Dave Gheesling passed away yesterday (11/11), and we’re all trying
to process the sudden loss. He was my best friend. I don’t have the
words to express how much he meant to me, how much he influenced my
life, and how blessed I was to have known the man.
Dave’s love of family & friends, his positivity, his generosity and
his enthusiasm for life are the example he has left for us all. Dave
has been an important part of our community, and his contributions
will live on as his legacy for many decades to come.
I apologize for the abruptness of an email communication, but we
were only able to contact a few people this evening, given the hour.
Please, if you need anything, contact me directly so that we can
give Dave’s family the time they need to prepare for the service. I
will post more details as they are available.

Hello everybody,
Here a message from Zelimir Gabelica the organizer of the Ensisheim Show.
Hello friends,
As president of the Association of Friends of the Meteorite of
Ensisheim, given the current situation (coronavirus and its
consequences), I have the duty to announce to you officially and with
great sadness, that we cannot maintain the 2020 edition of our Show on
meteorites and that, therefore, we postpone the event to 2021.
This decision takes into account the unanimous opinion of our
organizing committee and is also in complete agreement with the
opinion and request of the municipal authorities of the city of Ensisheim.
Our event involves a large number of dealers from all over the world
and attracts a large audience. Even if the current containment (the
latest news, planned to be extended beyond mid-April) will (perhaps)
end next June, it is expected that the period of "de-containment" will
be long and very progressive.
Health experts agree that the health crisis, but also, and most
importantly, the economic one, could last for weeks, even months. No
one can yet predict when the free movement of people across the
borders will be effective, or if the gathering of the public who
circulates during the fair will be officially authorized next June.
We hope that this pandemic will end before the end of the summer and
that we can resume our cultural and scientific activities with
confidence in June 2021.
With the full support of the entire organizing committee,
Best regards to all of you, and most importantly, stay healthy!

[meteorite-list] Good bye, Count Guido Roberto Deiro.

2020-01-12 Thread Mattias Bärmann via Meteorite-list

I met "The Count" first here on the MetList, admiring this old man and
his freshly discovered passion for meteorites which made him burn and
shine like a youngster.

A bit later we discovered additional mutual interests, passions,
desires, generating a dense exchange of emails, books etc.

In his last years Count Guido began to write and to publish. He sent
manuscripts to me, we discussed them, me and my son translated his
fascinating autobiographical novel 'Flying for Howard [Hughes]'.

Count Guido Roberto Deiro was the son of world-famous Vaudeville star
Count Guido Deiro. He worked hard for the remambrance of his father.

He himself seemingly lived several lives. He worked as a detective; as a
real estates entrepreneur; and, above all, as a pilot: a military test
pilot and, perhaps the most interesting job: as private pilot ot the
legendary Howard Hughes in Las Vegas. He supported several of the most
important American land artists, flying over America's South-West,
finding large properties to enable them to realize their projects. In
this context a very personal art collection began to develop, including
letters, sketches, drawings, maps, fotos etc. Count Deoro donated this
unique collection to the Nevada Museum of Art, which he supported in
other subjects as well.

Not to forget: the meteorites. He didn't only collect. As a hunter he
found the biggest stone meteorite of Nevada.

Count Guido Deiro was a Chevalier with a big heart. Always ready to try
to go new ways, powered by a good sense of humour. It's only today that
I learn of his death September 12, 2019.

Dear Count: thank you for your confidence, spontaneity, for your
adventerous heart and your friendship. I wish you all the best on your way.

Matthias Baermann

THE NEW SHOWROOMS

As announced earlier this year, the 20 th edition of our meteorite show has
returned to our old good “Palais de la Régence” (Regency Palace) which remains
forever our show “magical place”.
Important work has been done in the old building where an elevator is now
installed in accordance with the law on security. As a result, the space at the
end of the old staircase is now slightly limited and some tables have had to be
re-arranged. The new layout of the “Pas Perdus” hall (first floor entrance) now
involves only 5 dealer tables while the space devoted to the consignment tables
as well as the usual table of Anne Black are now cluttered by the elevator
environment.

Nevertheless, the “Spiess” space is now fully open and can accommodate 6 dealer
tables and the 5 consignment tables.
The “ Egloff ” hall still allows placing 9 tables, while the “ Regency Room ”
was not affected by the work.
As a result, presently 55 dealer and the 5 consignment tables could still be
easily installed in the Palace.

However, due to the recent increasing demand for tables, we estimate that at
least 65 tables are needed to satisfy everyone. This goal could only be
achieved by expanding the space of the Palace.
The extension now involves the installation of a medium sized tent (10.5 x 7 m)
connected to the main entrance of the Regency Palace. The entrance to the
Palace is now such that the public must enter through the tent door and
inevitably visit all the tables of the tent.

TABLE ATTRIBUTION

The new configuration of the space currently available (Palace + tent) forces
us to assign the tables according to the seniority rule:
The "old exhibitors" (those who have reserved tables for a long time), will
have the priority to have their usual tables in the Palace (so as in 2017). I will try to
arrange their table(s) the best I can, respecting as much as possible the old layout and
the presence of their usual neighbors.

The "new exhibitors" (those who have rented tables recently and all the newcomers) will
receive their tables in the adjacent tent, following the "first come, first served" rule.

Those of you who had booked tables in 2018 (in the temporary “Gymnase
Communal”), please inform me quickly whether (or not) you wish to confirm your
visit this year. If yes, specify how many tables you want to rent.
I insist that if you cannot go this year, you notify me that you want to
cancel. This is very important and absolutely necessary so that I can
immediately assign tables to those who are on the waiting list.

TABLE SPECIFICATION:

All tables (in the Palace and in the tent) are now fully equivalent in size
(160 x 80 cm) and in price (single price of 180 euros per table - and not per
meter - regardless of the number of tables rented, meaning that there is no
more digressive price for those who rent more than one table).

The Palace and the tent rooms are well lit. Anyway, it's up to you to decide if
your tables need extra lighting. Please note that only LED bulbs are
acceptable, with a maximum power of 100 watt per table. Other bulbs are now
prohibited.

Tables must be paid preferably in cash (in euros), at the reception desk.
French checks are tolerated but not credit cards .
When you pay, you will receive your personalized badges.

The reservation of the tables starts from now.

Re: [meteorite-list] Viñales meteorite fall report

Thank you, Mike, for your engagement and for this outstanding report.

Am 23.02.2019 um 00:07 schrieb Michael Farmer via Meteorite-list:

I just spent a week in Viñales.

The stories about the fall are incredible.

I’d like to share a few things regarding the fall.

I speak fluent Spanish so getting the information was easy.

One farmer was in his yard feeding chickens when he saw the bright
flash for a couple of seconds he said brighter than the sun. Hard to
see because the sun was also in the same direction.  It then he saw
the smoke trail overhead expanding once it passed over. A couple
minutes later the sonic booms and shockwave hit. he said it was like
being punched. Then a minute or more after the shockwave hit, stones
started falling all around him.

He heard individual pieces screaming in making whistling sounds and
hitting the ground. One hit his garden about 50 feet away.  Another
landed in the pond about 100 feet away, making a large water splash.
Another hit in the coffee plants behind his house. He said stones were
falling for over a minute or two. Hitting at different times. They
didn’t all come down at once.

He and his family found 4 near his house. One he heard hit in thick
brush and it hasn’t yet been found. One hit a yucca plant nearly
Cutting the trunk in half. He found that stone 5 days later embedded
in the soil at the base of the plant.

His wife found another across the street of almost 1 kilogram. It was
embedded in the soil and only the top surface was showing.

One boy on a bicycle was riding home rapidly afraid from the
explosions. He thought it was an American missile attack. A large 250
gram meteorite slammed into the asphalt road in front of him nearly
hitting him. He saw it bounce into the ditch and he jumped off the
bike and grabbed it, rapidly throwing it down because the stone was
painfully cold.

Another stone landed on the patio of the guesthouse Where I stayed in
downtown Viñales town.

I spoke to three other people who saw stones hit the ground and picked
the up instantly, all said same thing, that they had to drop them
because they were so cold.

One stone penetrated a house roof in Viñales and smashed a laptop
computer. I have not located the stone or computer to confirm.
Possible the police confiscated it. I have people working on it. I
know of at least 15 houses hit. All stones taken by the government.

I drove all over the Viñales Valley area, a massive area and no part
was spared meteorites. They were everywhere. Heavily scattered and not
well sorted.

10 gram stones fell a few feet from 2.5 kilogram stones. 50 gram, 500
gram. All same place.

Miles away in the town of La Majagua, thousands of small peas landed.
Sadly few were collected. The area is dense jungle and forest. Some
people reported picking up over 100 stones in a short time. Many
thrown away or given to the government. People came from far away and
took pieces. Miles up the road to the east is the El Salto lake. Many
stones were found on the dam. It has been heavily searched and I spent
a few hours there and didn’t find any. Some people reported going into
the pine forest nearby and finding many small stones on the pine
needles on the ground.

Sadly a massive heavy rain came last week only a couple days before my
arrival washing away the roads and making finds much more difficult.
With limited time I didn’t make any finds.

Most stones that landed in the soft farm soil penetrated in and
vanished under the soil. Before the rain people could see the impact
holes and locate the stone below. Now after the rain they are
impossible to locate. Stones are still being found in grassy pastures
and fields. But ticks are a problem. Within moments of entering the
grass you will be covered in tiny ticks. I’m still looking for them.

Stones are reported as falling in Pilotos village as well. This is due
to the high winds that curved the strewn field sharply to the east.
Doubtless millions of stones fell. The energy was 1.5 kiloton and the
mass was 350~ tons. If 99 % vaporized there would still be 3 tons on
the ground.

The problem is that the main part of the strewn field with larger
pieces is all jungle, mountains and dense tropical forest. Not much
chance of many large ones being recovered, and the largest masses made
it to the ocean.

Hard to estimate what’s been recovered. I’d put it at 30-50 kilograms
or more.

I have a limited number of complete crusted stones from 10 grams up yo
about 50 grams. I was able to decide what to purchase so I only took
the best pieces. Money is severely limited in Cuba due to no access to
American banking. Impossible to use any credit card or bank card. Cash
is heavily taxed. Changing is dollars incurs an instant 13% penalty tax!

If you want a gorgeous complete stone contact me rapidly. There aren’t
many of them. Mostly fragments.

Hello,

A huge iron meteorite has been found in France. 477 kilos. And 55 000 years old.
It is the St Aubin and now it is the largest meteorite ever found in France,
even bigger than Mon Dieu and La Caille.
And the strewn field has also been figured out.

Here, on behalf of Marc Chapelet who handles the Meteorites Division, are all
the details (in English, below the French version)
published by the Societe Astronomique de France, so it is a serious report.
(not a journalistic fantasy).

Enjoy!

More questions let me know, and I'll translate.

2018-09-13 Thread Mattias Bärmann via Meteorite-list

Ladies and Gentlemen,

well, this is of course not a work of art. Amazing craftmanship - yes
(if it's not a product of a 3 D printer, of course ^^)

One might call this object obsessive, even idiotic. Nevertheless, the
shape of the skull is a perfect sculpture of itself, and I don't
hesitate finding it fascinating to follow the Widmanstaetten patterns
and their transformations through the utmost complexe sculptural
landscape of volumes, depressions ...

I agree, the imagination of the wasted material makes depressive.

Conclusion? I personally would prefer a good sculpted, well sized Gibeon
individual in as found condition. Together with an etched endcut. (Would
absolutely do to keep the pic in a virtual poison chest for contemplation.)

Hello everyone !

I have not been posting here for quite a while...
Not a big fan of FBook and not much going on here ;)

A dear friend of mine in France (where I live now also) would love a
Moldovite
for the energy it would give him.

There are sooo many fakes everywhere..
I read a bit in French and much more in English, but any advice
welcomed ;)
(The best advice I read was to hold the Moldovite and feel its energy,
but

online... ;))

And if any of you can propose one, around $100 ?

Thanx

Great day or else to you all

Thanks for this update, Mike, and for the crucial info on this
meteorite.

Something told me that you would have the "low-down" on this specimen.
Even thought about contacting you, but I decided not to bother you.

Glad no damage was done, and no one got hurt in this fiasco. But it
sure is a shame,
that this great looking iron meteorite is now "lost to the ages".
Wonder where it is?
Too bad there isn't a discussion group that discusses meteorites such
as this one.

Re: [meteorite-list] Ensisheim 2018 news

2018-02-18 Thread Mattias Bärmann via Meteorite-list

19th “ENSISHEIM METEORITE 2018” show news (Feb 18, 2018)

Dear meteorite friends, members of IMCA & Meteorite-Central List,
Please find preliminary news mainly concerning the new place of the 2018 show.

As it was already informally announced last June in Ensiheim, confirmed to many
of you on a leaflet distributed at the Munich Mineral show last October, and
also officially announced this year in the 2018 calendar of world mineral shows
in the Lapis journal January issue and on a separate Lapis booklet, our 19th
meteorite show edition had to be tentatively shifted to another building, due
to important works in the Regency palace where an elevator (lift) is to be
built. These works will start in the forthcoming weeks and should last at least
one year.

The address of the new (provisional) show hall is :

Gymnase Communal, Rue de Colmar, F-68190 ENSISHEIM.

To satisfy many inquiries regarding the precise location of the new show hall,
here are more details.

The new building is located in the middle of a large park, about 450 m (« as
the crow flies”) from the Regency palace.
Roughly when you reach “downtown Ensisheim”, drive straight through the main
street (“Rue de la première Armée”), ignore the Regency palace and the “Domaine
du Moulin hotel” that are on your right, cross the bridge and proceed straight
200-250 m through “Rue de la Gare” up to the first large roundabout (traffic
circle) where you take the 3rd exit, Rue de Colmar, thus on the left from “Rue
de la Gare”.

The entrance is immediately on your left and you can enter by car the large yard (which is surrounded by “Rue de la Gare” and “Rue de Colmar”).

You will spot 2 main buildings, the “Gymnase” (show hall) and the “Elisatia”
building (restaurant, lecture rooms etc)”.
Park the car at the appropriate places indicated by signs and located around
the buildings, (parking space is large enough).
In case, I can provide a detailed map as mail attachment, on request; just ask.

The next concern of many of you is the table setup and the dealers layout.
The “Gymnase Communal” involves a large 40 x 20 m sports hall where all the
tables will be aligned in (most probably 4) parallel rows in a way equivalent
to the Munich show halls. All tables are therefore equivalent and equally
enlightened by natural sunlight through roof windows.
I will try to arrange the tables’ layout as it was in the main Regency room,
respecting as much as possible the presence of the usual neighbors in each case.
There is space enough to accommodate all the 2017 participants and even to add
a few extra tables for possible newcomers, understanding that we do not wish to
overstep 55-60 tables.

The table renting conditions stay roughly the same as last year. The food and
lecture spaces are by far improved and much free space is now available for
side activities within the shadowed park around the show buildings.

Finally Ensiheim show dates are scheduled, as usually, the week preceding the
Ste-Marie Mineral & Gem show, thus:

- Professional day: Fri. June 15: 13:00–18:00
- Public: Sat. June 16: 9:30–18:30 and Sun. June 17: 9:30–16:30

More news will be provided soon after we have a committee meeting this late
February.
From now on, you are free to officially apply for your booth (write to me,
preferably by mail, as I am currently very seldom available on phone).

Thank you for your constant interest for our event!

My ever friendly regards to everybody.

Zelimir

2018-01-17 Thread Mattias Bärmann via Meteorite-list

I agree, Tomek. The quality in the case of Sericho seems to differ
dramatically, depending on very different places the stones were enbedded.

The 2 pieces of /better/ quality (link 1): bidding has reached 42 $ for
6.2 g respectively 51 $ for 14.6 g (and still 4 days to continue).

I would not recommand to wait until the worst and cheapest pieces appear
on the market.

Seems strange that it has not been classified or published in the
MetBull which makes me question any of the findings. If I understand
correctly, meteoriticists/researchers cannot publish papers until the

Rob has made a good point about this object not being a comet, and for that
matter, the presumption that this thing is natural and unguided.
Personally, I am very disappointed that this object wasn't a comet and that it didn't leave a trail of dust
and gases, that one day we could have captured in a Stardust-like "sample return".  But
unfortunately, the darn thing got away quick and clean.  And equally unfortunate, that this has opened the
flood-gate for all sorts of "alien-craft" theories from a variety of fringe cults. I find it
astronomically coincidental that this "fly-by" occurred so close to the 20th anniversary of the
Heaven's Gate mass suicide, a concurrence which was not missed by our local news outlets, since this event
happened here in Rancho Bernardo.

NASA has admitted to having problems identifying what the object was and where
it originated, which only sparks the imagination as to possible scenarios.
What if this is just the first of many objects coming our way, as if we are
entering an intersteller asteroid shower?
What if this object was actually an asteroid populated with alien colonists in suspended
animation on their way to colonize Pegasus 5, using our Sun as a gravity assist?  How do
we know that intersteller travel doesn't require a number of "jumps"
interspersed with gravity assists and redirections?
Or worse, like a page out of a science fiction novel,  what if this the first
of many asteroid/crafts on their way to other points in our galaxy?  What if
our inner solar system is in the middle of some proposed intersteller freeway?
Maybe our home planet is part of a low-rent district, which will eventually be
under an overpass, which is part of an exit ramp for I5 (Intersteller Freeway
ramp for Pegasus 5)!
Only time will tell,  Bob V.

“There’s no point in acting surprised about it. All the planning charts and
demolition orders have been on display at your local planning department in
Alpha Centauri for 50 of your Earth years, so you’ve had plenty of time to
lodge any formal complaint and it’s far too late to start making a fuss about
it now. … What do you mean you’ve never been to Alpha Centauri? Oh, for
heaven’s sake, mankind, it’s only four light years away, you know.
I’m sorry, but if you can’t be bothered to take an interest in local affairs,
that’s your own lookout. Energize the demolition beams.”

Hi Mike,

It is indeed an intriguing interloper, with much speculation on MPML as to its

Its spectral characteristics (admittedly limited spectral resolution so far)
seem
more consistent with an asteroid than a comet, though there is no real
dividing line between an asteroid and an inactive comet -- more a continuum
between the two. Suffice to say the object is "red" with no strong spectral
peaks or troughs in the visible band.

One small correction to your post below -- the object certainly originated
in our galaxy, or one of the dwarf galaxies that is gravitationally bound to it
(e.g. the Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy). There has been insufficient time for the
body to travel intergalactic distances, even from as close as Andromeda.
Unfortunately, we will never know the identity of the star system from which
it originated.  --Rob

First recorded visit in this solar system by a visiting interstellar
object of unknown origin and composition. This comet-like object is
moving at a very high rate of speed (44 km/sec) and is entering our
cosmic neighborhood from an unusual angle that is nearly perpendicular
to the ecliptic.

This object does not come from our Asteroid Belt, Kuiper Belt, or Oort
Cloud. It is an interloper from the vast empty space between the
galaxies and stars. This comet-like object has streaked through our
solar system like a rifle shot and is now continuing on it's journey
through deep space in the direction of the Pegasus constellation.

Unlike most comets or asteroids, we Earthlings will never see this
strange visitor again, as it's speed and trajectory will carry it out
and away from our solar system into the distant reaches of
interstellar space.

Bolivia Meteorite Adventure
By Gregory M. Hupe

On November 20, 2016 a massive meteorite event took place over
Aiquile, Bolivia at approximately 5:00 p.m. local time. While still
daylight, Quechua Indian eyewitnesses saw ‘corkscrew’ smoke trails and
heard ‘whooshing’ noises followed by sonic booms and then stones
literally falling at their feet!

Michael Farmer and I went to Aiquile to hunt for meteorites and
attempt to acquire stones from the inhabitants. Things didn’t quite
work out that way…

Welcome to Aiquile Bolivia.

It would take us over two weeks after the fall to fly to Bolivia due
to Mike’s yearly show commitment in Japan. Just 24 hours at home
after returning from the show, Michael flew to Florida to meet me. On
December 8th we began our journey to South America from Miami. Our
travels would take us by air to Aiquile by way of La Paz and then on
to Cochabamba and then by private hire to Aiquile. With no sleep for
over 30 hours of travel from home to the dusty town near the
strewnfield, we were exhausted but too excited to rest. We went right
to work meeting with fellow meteorite hunter, Dario Ruiz, who had been
there for two weeks. He introduced us to individuals about hunting for
meteorites or buying some, but our hopes were quickly dampened by the
news of the town’s government putting up road blocks to deny access to
the strewnfield. It turns out that the officials were confiscating
stones from the Quechua finders which put them in a panic and afraid
to talk to outsiders. Things quickly became complicated.

We realized we were not going to be able to hunt for stones ourselves
without the threat of arrest, or far worse, physical harm from
protective villagers we were told may use force to stop outsiders from
hunting. Knowing this, we immediately went to ‘Plan B’ and were
granted secret meetings with owners of pieces from the fall. To our
thrill and amazement, we were able to see several stones ranging from
small broken fragments to large kilo-sized pieces. Throughout the
48-hours we were on site we were told of several large pieces included
a 50-kilo ‘Puzzle Stone’ which we believe to be just rumor as is
consistent with most falls.

On our second day we had an early start with a scheduled meeting to
see some stones, but being on ‘Bolivia time’ we sat for several hours
waiting, waiting and waiting some more. To keep us from leaving and
going to other contacts, our new friend entertained us with some
guitar play dressed in his caballero ranch clothing made of javelina,
lama and other durable animal skins. Aiquile is known as the ‘Capitol
of Charango’ (guitar) where the guitar is manufactured. It was nice to
enjoy this flavor of music high in the mountain village.

Noon was soon upon us with nobody bearing stones for us to consider so
we walked down the street for lunch and chose one of a few street
vendors offering potatoes and sausage. We ventured to the local
market and town square for a little tourism while we were there. The
meal was very tasty and the sightseeing was nice but we were eager to
get back

Hello,
I have a question.
As we know an iron meteorite, such like Campo del Cielo for example,
have a black surface.
I have here a deeply rusted Campo, I'm planning to remove rust with a
sand blasting process.
But with this I will obtain a greysh surface, like naked iron, the
same color of a slice.
Not really a natural color for the exterior of an iron meteorite and
also not aestetically pretty, looks too artificial for me.

There is something to do for restore the original black color?
Or it's better to remove the rust with a traditional steel brush,
maybe with a drill ???

Tips for mechanical or chemical process are welkomme!!!
I can try with the classical NaOh bath, I have also Phosphoric,
Citric and Oxalic acid :)

Thanks

Hah good question Francesco. But what is natural color of meteorite at
all ? Desert sandblasted NWA is not a real looking meteorite? Should I
paint them black to be looking like a real meteorites ? Poor Dhofars
This is what Im fighting long time. Strange stereotype that meteorite
MUST BE BLACK outside, WHY ?

When You like Your girlfrend ? When he smile to You with his pretty
face or when she put ton of Max Factor chemicals on it??

I have always strange taste, different than most of collectors. For
me, if specimen have crust must be black or black with rusty patina.
If meteorite have no more crust like Campo, why to "paint" it to black
to looks like Sikhote ? Then You will see paint, not Your meteorite. I
only can imagine what strange things they do to clean Campo and look
it like that. LOL

OK now a few tips.
As I understand Your Campo is a complete specimen ? To remove deep
rust You must use electrochemical cleaning + brush + small hammer.
Then You will get mostly cleaned meteorite with BLACK remains of rust
that will make Your meteorite looks REAL.Then heat it and put alot of
oil to make it looks fresh and oriented :)

This new find is 34 tons.

El Chaco weighs in at 37 tons and Hoba has them beat at 66.

I missing a metric conversion in reference to El Chaco?

Hi Doug, listers & listesses , -

in this context I would like to suggest /Domaine Du Météore/ from the
Languedoc, France. It is far from being proven, but the grapes are at
least cultivated in a crater, of which origin ever:

http://languedocwinetales.blogspot.de/2010/10/meteoric-faugeres.html

I know the different sorts of red wine of this domaine, they are superb
and the price is well appropriate.

And no, I am not the owner nor a relative or friend nor a shareholder
(unfortunately).

"Barry Schuler's Meteor"

OK, I aslo had been hearing about this ... let me share what a quick check up
on it yielded: Nothing meteoric about this besides a 5 cent label (Does the
owner collect meteorites? I dunno).

Looks to me like the "meteor" name was was inspired from the company Medior,
Inc. in the 1990's. Mr. Schuler went bankrupt with his prior Internet bubble company.
Not content with that, Medior was incorporated as a company that took its name from
adding *media* content ... mainly to Apple and AOL as it turned out. Eventually AOL took
it over and with him in management worked through inflating valuations until they could
take over Time-Warner in the world's most lopsided, poorly made merger imaginable.

At that time AOL (which included Medior attempting to "develop AOL further) was
widely hated by almost everyone on the Internet due to their marketing and billing
practices. When AOL crashed and burned, the owner's golden parachute and his 1990's
sweet dream in life was to make it big and retire in a vineyard with his business
partner he married then. The first commercial single-origin bottles (vs sold to
blenders) were produced in 2005 and and more quantities in 2006. Since 2013, the
2006 is supposed to be entering its prime, which should continue another 8 years or
so. Since the price has been edging down it looks like it is not doing as well as
they hoped.

Anyway, the meteor business is purely a marketing label, unless you consider
all the river rocks (could be viewed as meteor-wrongs!) that were scattered
throughout the vineyard, there is nothing interesting here.

From the folks who brought you AOL, and made you hate it, over $100 per bottle shipped
(at 59% off "list" today only), the only meteoric thing I can find to review
about this wine is its price ... *gulp* (gulps on sale are $10 ea.)...

That said, if you think it tastes good, that would be thanks to the couple
working the land that put their heart and soul into administering the place and
I wish them well as all hard-working American farmers! Disclaimer: Never
tasted it, and probably never will.

I predict that wine futures of this beverage will crash and burn in its time
... like any good meteor, after the lights go out, just like AOL which
incidentally is currently an excellent service for economical email under new
management that is no longer looking at creating a modern-day tulipmania and
cashing in before brick and mortar folk have time to mull over what's happening
:-)

Kindest wishes
Doug
