Rosetta Discovered Solid Organic Matter on Comet's Surface After
Locating Lost Philae Lander

"Europe's comet chaser, Rosetta, recently performed a couple of
remarkable feats. After Rosetta discovered ESA's lost Philae lander
lodged in a crevice of Comet 67P, it has also discovered complicated
organic molecules on the comet's surface.

Rosetta performed all these amazing achievements right before it runs
out of fuel and funding. It is expected to crash into the comet's
surface, marking the grand finale of its mission, according to Gizmodo.

Like most space probes and the innovative spacecraft that comes with
each of them, Rosetta will also meet its end. But before that happens,
it has discovered solid complex organic molecules on the surface of
comet 67P -- a vital scientific milestone concerning comets proven for
the first time ever."

The Japanese company ALE is working on a business concept that combines
entertainment with space exploration.

The startup has developed a type of artificial meteor that it will
launch from satellites, creating man-made meteor showers that can be
ordered to light up the sky at specific locations and times.

At the same time, the project will generate new insights into a part of
the Earth’s atmosphere that is relatively unknown.

Russian scientists plan to upgrade their nuclear missiles so they can
shoot down meteorites threatening to smash into Earth

Russian scientists want to upgrade their nuclear missiles in order to
prevent meteorites threatening to hit earth by smashing them while they
are still in space.

While it may sound similar to the plot of sci-fi disaster films
Armageddon and Deep Impact, Russian scientists are planning to tweak
their intercontinental ballistic missiles, ICBMs, to target meteorites.

Russian news agency TASS reports the missiles would have the power to
destroy meteorites measuring from 20m and up to 50m in size.

Meteorite fireball burns through South Georgia, Florida skies

Meteorite fireball burns through South Georgia, Florida skies

By Terry Richards

CNHI News Service

VALDOSTA — Dozens of spotters sighted a fireball burning its way
through the skies of South Georgia and North Florida Sunday, and an area
astronomer said it might have been a meteorite making landfall in the
region.

More than 100 reports of an "extremely bright daytime fireball" around
10:25 a.m. had been submitted to the American Meteor Society, according
to the group's website. Most of the sightings were to the east and
southeast of Valdosta, though some sightings were made in the
Tallahassee, Florida area to Valdosta's west, according to a map on the
group’s website.

Dr. Martha Leake of the physics, astronomy and geosciences department at
Valdosta State University said she was alerted to the fireball by Dr.
William Cooke, a VSU graduate and head of the NASA Meteoroid Environment
Office at Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama.

"Apparently, Doppler weather radar tracked it down to an altitude of a
mile," she said, indicating "significant material on the ground." Leake
said the lack of sightings in and around Valdosta might have been due to
the position of the sun at the time.

The potential impact area would be south of Fargo in Clinch County,
Georgia, and northeast of White Springs, Florida, Leake said.

"I suspect some of it wound up in the (Okefenokee) swamp or on farmland
south of the swamp," she said.

excerpt: It is thought to be the asteroid that was responsible for
sending the first recorded event in the USA of a meteor crashing to
Earth which hit and injured a human.

On November 30 1954 Ann Hodges of Sylacauga, Alabama, USA, was injured
by a falling meteorite.

Records of scientific tests done at the time show that, based on orbits
at the time 1685 Toro , which is also known as Earth's second satellite,
was calculated by experts to be the most likely origin of the meteor
which injured her.

Rare Meteorites Are Now Sought After By The Art Crowd

Holiday shopping for items from the Moon, Mars and the wilds of outer
space is still possible for those open to meteoritic stocking stuffers.
Such truly ancient pieces of space rock — think older than Earth
itself — are increasingly sought after by hundreds of high-end
collectors looking for natural pieces of sculpture.

Although a plethora of commercial startups are pining for metal riches
from asteroids in the Main Asteroid Belt and beyond, meteorite
collectors here on terra firma now routinely buy and sell these
off-world treasures at auction.

Christie’s South Kensington Auction House in London is planning their
first catalog sale of meteorites next April. Prices typically range from
around $500 to over $100,000, depending on the size, type of meteorites,
condition and provenance, James Hyslop, the Head of Science & Books at
Christie’s South Kensington, told me.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Fall Over Eastern Turkish Village: Poor Villagers Make Hundreds Of Thousands Of Dollars After Black Stones From Space Rain Down

2015-11-15 Thread Shawn Alan via Meteorite-list
Hello Ruben and John

I think with any fall it will be over priced but in a few months the
value should fall. To be honest there isn't any thing special with the
actual fall. The only thing that might cause this to go up in price is
some scientist coins up a new chemical in this type of meteorite.
Howardites are lead to be from from Vest. Not including HED/ Vesta
meteorite there are over 942 meteorites from there. How many more do
collecters need to collect from one body. Like for me, all I need is one
lunar meteorite and only one or 2 meteorites from Mars. At any rate, it
will be exciting to see the write up and anything else becomes of this
fall.

You Never Knew You Wanted a Vodka Filtered Through Meteorites





Crystal Skull Vodka was already pretty fun, but one thing it didn't
have: actual filtering through crystal skulls. And while Outer Space
Vodka was not, in fact, filtered in outer space, it used the next best
thing: naturally occurring space junk, aka meteorites. Besides,
apparently whiskey brewed in space smells and tastes like burnt rubber.

A lot of vodkas, especially on the bottom of the shelf, are filtered
through charcoal, a form of carbon. But only a small portion of
meteorites are made of carbon – many are silicon materials or nickel
and iron metallic meteors. The latter is usually the type of thing
filters are keeping out. Silicon, on the other hand, is used in more
recent filtration systems. So, while online information about Outer
Space Vodka is ... scant (it has a 6 follower Twitter account, but no
official website), we're assuming that silicon meteorites are used, or
the meteorite filtration process is a gimmick.

But of course, it's ALL a gimmick, that's the point. But this gimmick is
much, much less expensive than Crystal Skull Vodka, and still has a
goofy bottle made to look like a green alien head, though UFO
enthusiasts will tell you they actually have grey skin, but they also
believe the president is a reptilian, so what do they know? It retails
for $29.99, but you can get a whole case here for $161 and get your
Christmas shopping out of the way.

[meteorite-list] Nasa Cassini: Enceladus' core 'like a primitive meteorite that can host alien life forms'

Nasa Cassini: Enceladus' core 'like a primitive meteorite that can host
alien life forms'

By Hannah Osborne | International Business Times

The core of Saturn's icy moon Enceladus appears to have the conditions
necessary for alien life to form beneath the surface, scientists have
said. Researchers conducting laboratory experiments mimicking reactions
known to take place on Enceladus have said the moon's core is similar to
a primitive meteorite.

Yasuhito Sekine and colleagues from the University of Tokyo simulated
the generation of tiny silica-rich particles that are known to originate
from inside Enceladus's crust. These particles were detected in plumes
of ice and suggested water-rock interactions are taking place deep
inside the moon.

Publishing their findings in the journal Nature Communications, the
authors note it has long been suggested Enceladus has a subsurface
ocean. The discovery of silica nanoparticles show there are hydrothermal
reactions taking place at the interior of the moon.

To find out more about these reactions, the team carried out laboratory
experiments to reconstruct the conditions of the reactions. Their
findings showed that to form silica particles, the moon's core had to be
similar to that of carbonaceous chondrites - some of the most primitive
known meteorites.

The team experimented with gasses similar to those seen in plumes coming
from Enceladus. They were able to create liquids at the conditions found
on the moon and say they are consistent with the formation of the
minerals serpentine and sapnite – both of which are found on primitive
meteorites.

If Enceladus' core does have this predicted composition, it would mean
the moon formed very shortly after the formation of the solar system, or
that this activity was triggered by a recent heating event. Furthermore,
the scientists say that the reaction conditions would suggest hydrogen
production is taking place – a finding that would mean there is energy
for life to form beneath the icy surface.

"Under the required conditions, hydrogen production would proceed
efficiently, which could provide chemical energy for chemoautotrophic
life," they wrote.

Geologist rates Cranbourne South strip a hotspot for scientific treasure
trove of undiscovered meteorites

CRANBOURNE SOUTH landowners could be sitting on a goldmine of
undiscovered meteorites, a Devon Meadows geologist says.

Tom Kapitany believed it was only a matter of time before more
meteorites were unearthed as areas of Botanic Ridge were developed.

The Acacia estate, being built near the intersection of Browns and Craig
roads, was one of the hottest prospects for meteorites, Mr Kapitany
said.

Any finds could be quite valuable — scientifically and financially —
for those lucky enough to dig them up, with prices ranging from
$3000-$5000 a kilogram.

“The area now being opened is the one closest to where the largest of
the dozen meteorites so far found came to Earth in a shower some time
before European settlement,” Mr Kapitany said.

“I would rate it as the hottest stretch along the line stretching
roughly from Pakenham to Pearcedale.

Hello Listers,

Chelyabinsk-like meteorites may strike Earth twice this century

Source: REX

The threat of an asteroid or meteorite attack on Earth is still
relevant, Professor of the Ural Federal University, Victor Grokhovsky
believes.

According to the scientist, large celestial bodies "attack" planet Earth
approximately three times in 100 years. Therefore, we may witness
another meteorite attack, similar to the one that occurred in the sky
above Chelyabinsk, Russia.

"In this century, the first large meteorite exploded in the sky over
Chelyabinsk. It is quite possible that objects similar to the
Chelyabinsk meteorite may strike Earth once or twice this century," the
professor told TASS, Pravda.Ru says.

Grokhovsky explained that his theory was based on the statistical data
of meteorite attacks on Earth in the last hundreds of years.

According to Grokhovski, scientists do not know much about the threats
that planet Earth may encounter in space.

Salinas man finds meteorites in Nevada

Scott Harlan 7:38 a.m. PDT August 15, 2015

My interest in geology probably started with my father who was a
petroleum geologist. We would go to gem and mineral shows together and
look at all of the spectacular specimens.

Later as an adult, our family often incorporated some kind of rock
hounding in our vacations. We hunted for fossil fish in Wyoming,
trilobites in Utah and Herkimer diamonds in New Jersey. This was
something everyone in our family could do with really equal chances of
success regardless of age.

There is a sense of discovery when you find something that no man has
ever seen before.

In 2011, there was a witnessed meteorite fall near Sutter’s Mill in
California. It was a large fireball and the speeding meteorite fragments
appeared on weather radar, so there was good definition for where to
look for meteorites on the ground.

My brother and I went up to Lotus, an unincorporated community in El
Dorado County, and searched for a couple days, but we did not find
anything. Many people did find meteorites from that fall, however, and
this sparked my interest in meteorite hunting.

Like meteorites, lightning bolts can reshape rocks

Around the globe, lightning flashes 44 times a second. Contrast that
with meteorite impacts, which occur just five to 10 times per year.

Yet according to a new study led by Penn geologist Reto Gieré, both
natural phenomena can do the same, unusual thing: deform rocks at the
atomic level.

“It’s like if someone pushes you, you rearrange your body to be
comfortable,” says Gieré, professor and chair of the Department of
Earth and Environmental Science in the School of Arts Sciences. “The
mineral does the same thing.”

Gieré, who embarked on the study with researchers from Germany and
Australia, discovered the similarity in a sample of quartz from a rock
outcropping in southern France. The rock had been struck by lightning
and fractured. The researchers could see that the area in and around the
fracture was covered in a distinctive black coating.

Tracking meteors with 'Fireballs in the Sky' App

Tamworthians were rocked by a loud booming noise on Tuesday morning the
11th August, accompanied by reports of a green flash across the sky.
Dave Reneke, our resident space expert reckons it may have been a
meteor, possibly from the Perseid meteor shower.

Curtin University's geology researchers are tracking meteors using a new
app they have developed called 'Fireballs in the sky'. The app is the
first of it's kind and it allows people to submit sightings of alleged
meteors to the university.

Jay Ridgewell is Curtin University's Geoscience Outreach Officer and she
says the app is easy to use, you just hold your smartphone up and tap
where the meteor started in the sky and where it ended.

Curtin University then gets the data and goes out in search of meteorite
samples in the area where the sighting is reported. Jay says that most
meteorite samples are the size of your fist and the best ones look like
fireworks across the sky.

Meteorites help us understand what our earth is made of and Jay says
they are like crumbs from the beginning of our solar system.

Jennifer Ingall spoke to Jay Ridgewell to find out more about the app:

How Asteroids Could Fuel 'Gas Stations' In Outer Space

Preparing a mission for outer space is a little bit like getting ready
to go camping.

If you don’t pack enough provisions for the whole trip, it’s going
to be tough to make it back home.

But geologist Leslie Gertsch is hoping to change all that. She’s
starting a lab at Missouri University of Science and Technology this
summer that will test space rocks for gases—if she finds enough gas,
there could be a future for rocket gas stations in space.

“If you can stop at a gas station, a gas asteroid, it would make
[space travel] more efficient,” Gertsch says. “You wouldn’t have
to carry all your fuel.”

What’s the magic gas ingredient inside the space rocks?

Gertsch will have to bake the meteorites to find out exactly what kinds
of gases they give off, and how much, but research suggests some of the
rocks have as much as 22 percent water in them, and gases like carbon
dioxide, sulfur

Hillary Clinton sounds the alarm on meteorites

Hillary Clinton on Thursday called attention to a dire security threat:
meteorites.

Speaking before a town hall in New Hampshire, the Democratic
front-runner said experts should be mapping meteorites and asteroids
“on a security basis,” noting the importance of scientific research
and development in stimulating the U.S. economy.

“You know, back in the early ’90s, our country invested in mapping
the human genome, and my husband was president when it finally was
revealed. Money had been put in by both Republican and Democratic
presidents and Congresses because we wanted to know more about what this
meant. And in the years since, hundreds and thousands of jobs have been
created and many millions of dollars have been generated for our
economy,” Clinton said.

“I think we’re just at the beginning of trying to understand what is
a black hole? Why is it there? What is in it? What does it mean for us?
We should, on a security basis, be mapping the meteorites and the
meteors and all the other things that people — asteroids — that
people worry about,” she added.

More Evidence Life Could Have Come From Beyond

A new study reveals bacteria can survive Atmospheric Entry

By Jason Tetro Posted Yesterday at 10:00am

Lithopanspermia. The word is a mouthful but represents one of the most
intriguing theories about the origin of life on Earth. Quite literally,
it means life began from an extraterrestrial source and brought here by
hitching a ride on a rock, more specifically, a meteorite. The idea the
entirety of biological life coming from afar makes for fantastic sci-fi
fodder but the story proving it as possible fact has been even more
entertaining.

[meteorite-list] Social media might destroy meteorite collecting and selling!

2015-07-05 Thread Shawn Alan via Meteorite-list
Hello Listers

I have noticed an explosion of people insisting they have found a
meteorite popping up everywhere on FB. And now ebay is having an influx
of fakes being offered on there. Couple years ago it wasnt that often
you would see fakes on there, but now its a common theme. I mean people
think that its a common occurrence with finding a meteorite, and now
they come infused with gold. What should we do? Today I saw 5 fake
meteorites being sold on ebay within a couple minutes when I do my ebay
search to see whats been posted recently to ebay, that's kinda scary and
some of them have bids. I noticed that the more meteorite groups that
keep popping up on FB the more people think they have a meteorite and
insist its real. These social media groups are fragmenting the core
group of meteorites collectors, sellers, and dealers. Couple years ago
MC was buzzing, but now its quite on here. Also on FB people are lazy
and just hit like LOL and say nothing cause they have to read the next
post and like that. Don't get me wrong I dig FB but I think we need to
rethink these social media outlets and start chatting more on MC. :)

[meteorite-list] The Compositional Structure of the Asteroid Belt

Abstract

The Compositional Structure of the Asteroid Belt

 Francesca E. DeMeo, Conel M. O'D. Alexander, Kevin J. Walsh, Clark R.
Chapman, Richard P. Binzel

(Submitted on 16 Jun 2015)

The past decade has brought major improvements in large-scale asteroid
discovery and characterization with over half a million known asteroids
and over 100,000 with some measurement of physical characterization.
This explosion of data has allowed us to create a new global picture of
the Main Asteroid Belt. Put in context with meteorite measurements and
dynamical models, a new and more complete picture of Solar System
evolution has emerged. The question has changed from What was the
original compositional gradient of the Asteroid Belt? to What was the
original compositional gradient of small bodies across the entire Solar
System? No longer is the leading theory that two belts of planetesimals
are primordial, but instead those belts were formed and sculpted through
evolutionary processes after Solar System formation. This article
reviews the advancements on the fronts of asteroid compositional
characterization, meteorite measurements, and dynamical theories in the
context of the heliocentric distribution of asteroid compositions seen
in the Main Belt today. This chapter also reviews the major outstanding
questions relating to asteroid compositions and distributions and
summarizes the progress and current state of understanding of these
questions to form the big picture of the formation and evolution of
asteroids in the Main Belt. Finally, we briefly review the relevance of
asteroids and their compositions in their greater context within our
Solar System and beyond.

[meteorite-list] Does anyone buy entire meteorite colletions?

2015-06-28 Thread Shawn Alan via Meteorite-list
Hello Listers and Don

From my understanding there are few dealers that will buy whole
collections, it depends on the price and what you have. Now if your
looking to sell fast that's the best way to go, but your going to loose
a lot in what you paid on your collection. Lets say you spent 100,000
and if I was a dealer I would offer you 15,000 to start the offering and
I wouldn't go higher than 20,000 to 25,000. But again, that depends on
the collection. I would suggest this Don, take out the high end ticket
items and sell them alone and group different meteorites and sell those
as a whole LOTS. This way you can save some time on selling your
collection and also get a good return.

After your done selling off your collection, will you still be
collecting meteorites and using the money earned to buy a different
collection? If that's the case, I would do trades cause it can be a win
win for both parties on some of the meteorites you have.

Intro:

50,000 years ago, a dense chunk of nickel and iron, over 100 feet
across, entered the Earth’s atmosphere. It sped towards the surface at
45,000 miles per hour, and slammed into the lush woodlands of North
America. The impact left a giant hole—590 feet deep and three-quarters
of a mile wide—in the landscape of what is now northern Arizona.

Today, we know the site as Meteor Crater. It has fascinated generations
of people, but we are still only just beginning to understand asteroids,
the phenomenon that excavated this remarkable location. To really get
the scope of this natural wonder, Popular Science sent extreme science
correspondent Jake Roper to take us on a video tour.

A team of Canadian, Scottish and U.S. researchers says they have
discovered traces of methane in meteorites from Mars -- a possible clue
in the search for life on the Red Planet.

The researchers examined samples from six Martian meteorites that had
fallen to Earth. The team crushed the rocks and then analyzed the gases
that emerged using a mass spectrometer.

The meteorites were found to contain gases similar to the composition of
the Martian atmosphere; they also contained methane.

[meteorite-list] Why Dark Does Not Exist And This is Why

2015-06-14 Thread Shawn Alan via Meteorite-list
Hello Listers

Space is finite like a drop of water in a glass, once it hits its outer
limits like all things, it oscillates and implodes. Why would space be
continuum? If we believe in the big bang theory we must believe in a
finite space, if we didn’t, the big theory would not exist. It is not
that dark matter holds the continuum in space; it’s that the
oscillation of the big bang theory that holds true to our universe. All
things are circular, why wouldn’t space be the same? Space is finite,
like a drop of blood to the sun. All things oscillate to the epicenter.

Re: [meteorite-list] Lunar meteorites selling for peanuts

2015-05-30 Thread Shawn Alan via Meteorite-list
Hello Listers,

I agree, its supply and demand. Heck, I got a Martian for $125 per gram.
As for planataries, this is my theory... All you really need is a couple
meteorites from each body and then you move on. True, there is
scientific value to be had, but that's the case with every meteorite.
The question is, is if it hold's historic merit and science is historic
merit as well if its important.

For me, I would like to get a Nakhla again, I traded mine, but till
then, ill hold onto my NWA martian. As for lunar meteorites are
concerned, if it looks like a lunar and acts like a lunar point me in
the direction to the best look example for the cheapest price :)

Now here's the ticker Lets say someone finds a lunar meteorite in
USA would it be more then NWA lunar? In my book no, it would be the
same. Even if it was some new classification I think it would be the
same.? Cause at the end of the day, its still from the moon. How many
more meteorites can one collect from the moon?

Now if its the first lunar meteorite fall that can cause an up roar and
if it hit something or killed a horse or cow, or hits some lady in the
hip, I think it would be a pretty penny. But again, its still from the
moon and each year more and more meteorites keep coming from the moon.
Just think, in 20 years from now, there will be 200 more lunar
meteorites on the market Just say. But I would say this, the first
lunar fall will be historic and when that happens you better buy up all
the lunar meteorites you can, cause the price of a lunar meteorite will
go back up to $1000 plus per gram and more.

Now back to martian meteorites... They can hold merit, black beauty can
sell for a lot, but has dropped in price, while Nakhla has stayed its
ground. When science discovers life on Mars, martian meteorites will go
up in value over night and lot of people will make some coins if they
cash out what they have, only time will tell with martian meteorites.

I guess at the end of the day, we need some big planetary event to make
these peanuts into pecans :) and when that happens meteorite collecting
will go full throttle in collecting and price.

 Hi Shawn,

I think most of what we are seeing is supply and demand at work. As
time goes on, more and more planetaries are coming out of the hot
deserts, especially the NWA DCA. In recent months, we have seen over
a dozen new planetaries (including several lunars) that have been
 approved in the Met Bulletin.

New collectors are coming in to the hobby on a regular basis, but the
supply of planetaries available to these collectors has stayed steady
or increased. Old offerings are absorbed into collections and vanish
from the open market, but they are replaced with numerous new
offerings that are being sold by an ever-increasing number of dealers.

In the past, the majority of planetaries were held by a
relatively-small group of veteran dealers. Now, there are many
middle/moderate-size dealers who are offering lunars and Martians.

In order to be competitive, dealers need to better control the
supply/market (not likely) or lower prices to attract buyers to these
new planetaries - many of which are not that remarkable in comparison
to previous offerings. For every new Nakhlite or Black Beauty, there
are a dozen new (sometimes unpaired) shergottites hitting the
 market.

I won't mention names, but there are a couple of big collector/dealers
who are buying up multiple planetary masses in recent years and the
majority of that material does not appear to have hit the open market
yet. If that material is ever released into the market, it would
depress the asking prices even further.

 Best regards,

 MikeG

[meteorite-list] A crowdfunding campaign is trying to save us from life-threatening asteroids

2015-05-17 Thread Shawn Alan via Meteorite-list
Hello Listers

I think we need to work on the human race before we worry about
asteroids

Shawn Alan
IMCA 1633

Website http://meteoritefalls.com

A crowdfunding campaign is trying to save us from life-threatening
asteroids

If a huge asteroid slammed into the Earth with crushing force tomorrow,
it could swiftly bring an end to all humankind.

Luckily, that's not going to happen – our asteroid analysis and
predictive techniques are advanced enough to tell when a devastating
impact might happen in the near future. But that's not to say an
asteroid like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs 65m years couldn’t
come hurtling towards us during our life times.

These super-impacts happen extremely rarely, so generally everyone's
fairly chilled out about it. The smaller ones, on the other hand, are
much more frequent – asteroids with diameters of 20m or over come
within close vicinity of the Earth once every 25 years , yet we have
failed to invest in the infrastructure required to spot them before they
arrive.

Recognising this dearth of ways to protect ourselves from asteroid
attacks, researchers at Iowa State University’s Asteroid Deflection
Research Center have launched a crowd-sourcing campaign to raise funds
for a new kind of defence system.

Called the Emergency Asteroid Defence Project (EADP), the hope is to
build a machine capable of identifying and deflecting incoming objects
at very short notice.

The Hypervelocity Asteroid Intercept Vehicle (HAIV) would be made of two
parts, working together to kick the asteroid in the opposite direction
to Earth and then obliterate it into lots of harmless pieces in space.

But in order to get the project under way, the researchers must raise
$200,000 (£127,000) through their campaign on Indiegogo. This will go
towards designing the blueprints for the vehicle and establishing how it
will be built. As an incentive, funders are being offered gifts such as
astronaut ice cream and a private dinner with the head of the team.

Do We Have Pieces of Pallas on Earth?

By: Bob King | May 6, 2015

With all the excitement over the dwarf planets Ceres and Pluto, it would
be easy to overlook the asteroid 2 Pallas. But if you did, you'd miss a
fine opportunity to observe an asteroid that, like Vesta, has delivered
pieces of itself to Earth as meteorites.

Pallas, discovered in March 1802, was originally considered a planet, as
were all the early asteroid discoveries. But by the mid-1800s, with 15
new planets on the roster and more in the offing, astronomers thought
it prudent to reclassify these small bodies as minor planets or
asteroids. Sound familiar?

With the discovery of large, Pluto-sized asteroids in the distant Kuiper
Belt beginning in 1992, Pluto suddenly had company, stirring the
International Astronomical Union to re-brand the planet and its ilk as
dwarf planets in August 2006.

Researchers find levels of nitrogen in meteorites similar to levels in
Earth's atmosphere

A trio of researchers in Germany has found levels of nitrogen in
carlsbergite in two meteorite samples match levels found in the human
body and the Earth's atmosphere. In their paper published in Nature
Geoscience, Dennis Harries, Falko Langenhorst and Peter Hoppe with
Universität Bayreuth, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena and
Max-Planck-Institut für Chemie respectively describe their analyses of
two primitive meteorites found in Antarctica in 1979, and offer theories
as to how nitrogen levels found in them came to be there.

Moon-forming impact left
scars in distant asteroids
Planetary collision dated through analysis of meteorites

by

Eric Hand

It was the biggest cataclysm the solar
system has ever seen. About 100 million
years after the planets began to take
shape, a Mars-sized body crashed into
the proto-Earth, creating a halo of hot
debris that coalesced into the moon.
There was collateral damage, it turns
out. Scientists now suspect that fragments
of the giant impact were flung all the way to
the fledgling asteroid belt. When this planetary
shrapnel crashed into bodies there, it
shock heated them, leaving an imprint that
can still be detected billions of years later
in meteorites. On page 321, planetary scientists
show that these shock-heating signatures
provide a new way to date the moon’s
formation, pegging it at 105 million years
after the beginning of the solar system
4.6 billion years ago.
The result could help settle debates
about the age of the moon and suggests that
meteorites, which are mostly fragments of
asteroids, could harbor other evidence of
tumult in the inner solar system. “The asteroid
belt is almost primordial,” says Bill
Bottke, a planetary scientist at Southwest
Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado,
and lead author of the new study. “A lot of
objects there have been witness to activity
in the inner solar system. We now have a

way to probe that.”
Scientists have long tried to pin down the
age of the moon by analyzing lunar samples
returned from the Apollo missions. But because
of disagreements about the isotope
systems used for dating, the calculated ages
vary from about 30 million years after the
start of the solar system
to 100 million or even
200 million years younger.
A more precise age would
help scientists work out
when the bumper-car process
of planet formation
began winding down. The
moon-forming impact is
thought to have come late
in the process, because
the composition of Earth’s
mantle reflects only a
short period of impacts
by smaller bodies after the
mammoth collision.
Researchers who study
the giant impact have
typically ignored the bits
that didn’t end up in the moon. But Bottke
realized that an event so large would have
created fragments moving fast enough to
escape the collective gravity of the Earthmoon
system. “You create this huge swarm
of material,” he says. His models suggest

that 10 billion kilometer-sized bodies would
have been flung out into the solar system—
where many of them could strike asteroids.
Asteroids constantly collide with each
other, but at relatively slow speeds. Some
high-speed projectiles from the giant impact,
in contrast, would have struck at
speeds upward of 10 kilometers a second,
melting and transforming asteroid minerals
into darker, glassy materials. The shock
heating would also have altered a standard
radio active “clock” used for dating, in which
a radioactive isotope of potassium decays
into argon that remains trapped in the crystal
structure of the rock. “If you heat it up
enough, argon moves through the crystal
structures, and you can reset [the clock],”
says study co-author Tim Swindle, director
of the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory at
the University of Arizona in Tucson.
Searching through the literature for meteorites
that had already been dated, the
team found 34 samples that fit their profile:
those with shock-heating alteration and
ancient argon ages. A significant fraction
of these 34 samples have ages that cluster
around 105 million years after the solar system
began; that, the team believes, is the
age of the moon-forming impact.
Other scientists are excited about the
method but worried about the small sample
size. The authors used their own judgment
to identify meteorites with the right
type of shock heating, and their 34 meteorite
samples could hail from as few as five
or six parent asteroid bodies. “Is that really
representative of everything the asteroid
belt saw?” asks Sarah Stewart, a planetary
scientist at the University of California,
Davis. “It’s not a robust
conclusion, but it’s a
robust method.”
Swindle says the new
moon age estimate—a
signal “strong enough
to look like more than a
curiosity”—will improve
as his lab and others calculate
dates for more shockheated
meteorites. And
Bottke hopes the method
will be used for more than
just dates. He says meteoriticists
should return
to these 34 samples and
inspect them carefully.
Perhaps amid the veins
of glassy materials are
fragments of the giant impactor, or the
proto-Earth itself. “There may still be
traces of the primordial Earth in the asteroid
belt, and they may be in our meteorite
collections today,” Bottke says. “To me
that’s fun.”

Attention treasure-hunters! €10k pieces of meteorite fall in Ireland

An Irish person could be in for a cash windfall after pieces of
meteorite worth up to €10,000 each fell from the skies at the weekend.

Hundreds of people witnessed a fireball streaking across the Irish skies
at approximately 10.10pm on Sunday evening.

According to David Moore, editor of the Astronomy Ireland magazine, each
piece of meteorite could fetch up to ten times the price of gold in the
collectors' market.

At the current price of gold, this means that a piece of meteorite rock
weighing approximately 28 grams could make the lucky person a cool
€10,000.

It is believed that two meteorites land in Ireland every year, but they
are rarely visible to the naked eye.

Astronomy Ireland have received hundreds of reports of the sighting,
with coast guards in the south-west of the country getting mistaken
reports of 'flares being released'.

Experts believe this meteorite, seen streaking from Kerry towards
Donegal, could have been as large as a car while still whole.

There is a chance some parts of this meteorite survive, and we think it
may have fallen somewhere in the north of the country, Astronomy
Ireland's David Moore told RTE Radio One's Morning Ireland as he
appealed for people to share their stories of the sighting.

We'd ask people to get in contact with us while it's still fresh in
their mind. Check your CCTV cameras if you have them, a photographic
report would be worth hundreds of eye witness reports, he said.

The price of meteorites and what they're worth would come from the
collectors and what they're prepared to pay, he continued.

It is a big trade and Irish meteorites are very rare. It's a small
island, this doesn't happen very often.

MOON DAILY
Dating the moon-forming impact event with meteorites
 by Staff Writers
Tucson AZ (SPX) Apr 22, 2015

Through a combination of data analysis and numerical modeling work,
researchers have found a record of the ancient Moon-forming giant impact
observable in stony meteorites. Their work will appear in the April 2015
issue of the Journal Science.

The work was done by NASA Solar System Exploration Research Virtual
Institute (SSERVI) researchers led by Principal Investigator Bill Bottke
of the Institute for the Science of Exploration Targets (ISET) team at
the Southwest Research Institute and included Tim Swindle, director of
the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory.

The inner Solar System's biggest known collision was the Moon-forming
giant impact between a large protoplanet and the proto-Earth. The timing
of this giant impact, however, is uncertain, with the ages of the most
ancient lunar samples returned by the Apollo astronauts still being
debated.

Numerical simulations of the giant impact indicate this event not only
created a disk of debris near Earth that formed the Moon, but it also
ejected huge amounts of debris completely out of the Earth-Moon system.

The fate of this material, comprising as much as several percent of an
Earth mass, has not been closely examined until recently. However, it is
likely some of it blasted main belt asteroids, with a record plausibly
left behind in their near-surface rocks. Collisions on these asteroids
in more recent times delivered these shocked remnants to Earth, which
scientists have now used to date the age of the Moon.

The research indicates numerous kilometer-sized fragments from the giant
impact struck main belt asteroids at much higher velocities than typical
main belt collisions, heating the surface and leaving behind a permanent
record of the impact event.

Evidence that the giant impact produced a large number of
kilometer-sized fragments can be inferred from laboratory and numerical
impact experiments, the ancient lunar impact record itself, and the
numbers and sizes of fragments produced by major main belt asteroid
collisions.

Once the team concluded that pieces of the Moon-forming impact hit main
belt asteroids and left a record of shock heating events in some
meteorites, they set out to deduce both the timing and the relative
magnitude of the bombardment.

By modeling the evolution of giant impact debris over time and fitting
the results to ancient impact heat signatures in stony meteorites, the
team was able to infer the Moon formed about 4.47 billion years ago, in
agreement with many previous estimates. The most ancient Solar System
materials found in meteorites are about one hundred million years older
than this age.

Early Earth May Have Swallowed a Mercury-Like Planet

The jostling of the giant planets Jupiter and Saturn in the solar
system’s early days may have delivered a Mercury-type building block
to baby Earth, providing the planet with the chemistry to heat its
convecting, liquid metal core to this day, a new study shows.

 Play Video

The Mystery Of The Earth's Core Explained

We've been to the moon but we've barely scratched the surface of our own
planet!

The research, which is based on computer models, resolves two
long-standing mysteries about Mother Nature's recipe for Earth. The
first is why the planet has an abundance of the rare-earth metals
samarium (Sm) and neodymium (Nd) compared meteorites, which are believed
to be samples of Earth’s building blocks.

The second riddle is how the planet’s metallic core has stayed hot
enough over the eons to continue convection, a process that generates
Earth’s protective magnetic shield.

Oxford University researchers Anke Wohlers and Bernard Wood got the idea
to incorporate a sulfur-rich body like Mercury into Earth-formation
computer simulations after making connections between colleagues’
previous studies relating rare earth elements, including samarium and
neodymium, to sulfides; the elements’ chemical mismatch between Earth
and meteorites; and observations from NASA’s MESSENGER spacecraft that
Mercury has high levels of sulfur.

“Then we had to do the experiments to test the idea,” Wood told
Discovery News.

The models show the impacting body would have to have been 20 to 40
percent as big as Earth to produce the required chemical mix. The crash
could have happened as the building blocks for Earth were melding
together, or it could have been the hypothesized Mars-sized impactor,
named Theia, that hit Earth and led to the formation of the moon.

With Jupiter on the move, the inner solar system was like a “mixing
bowl,” Wood said.

ANALYSIS: The Incredible Shrinking Mercury

“Under these circumstances, Mercury-like bodies could have been
scattered both outwards and inwards. One could envision an early
Mercury-like Earth or even a much later collision with a Mercury-like
body, such as that which formed the moon,” Wood wrote in an email.

The new science of the origins of life

After being pelted with meteorites for half-a-billion years, life began
to appear on Earth.

.

After being pelted with meteorites for half-a-billion years, life began
to appear on Earth. The miraculous leap happened around four billion
years ago, when the atmosphere was blanketed with lethal gases and the
ocean was thick with iron. Wendy Zukerman examines how life formed in
these conditions and why it didn’t appear anywhere else nearby.

Despite phenomenal advances in modern science, the fundamental question
of why life started on this planet remains unanswered. Over the past
century, however, scientists have slowly been piecing together the story
of our very first ancestors.

They have been cooking with chemicals they believe the early Earth was
swimming in and they are forging the molecules which, over billions of
years, are thought to have evolved to become, well, you and me. There is
still much to understand, however.

‘There are huge difficulties in looking back to see exactly how life
did get established,’ says Matthew Powner, a professor of chemistry at
University College London. ‘The rock record runs out before life was
established.’

For life to have begun, something that could encode information and
replicate itself was necessary. A molecule—or perhaps a group of
molecules—would have done the trick. Once these substances could
replicate themselves, it’s believed that natural selection would have
stepped in to create new versions of the ‘Great Starter’.

‘Slight errors in that replication give rise to slight variations on
the theme,’ says Powner. ‘That can give them an evolutionary
advantage which can then be potentially passed on more readily, and then
you have, effectively, an evolutionary arms race.’

These Generation 2.0 molecules, for example, would be better equipped to
multiply and survive than their predecessors. What was that first
ingredient that kicked off life on Earth, though?

A primordial origin for the compositional similarity between the Earth
and the Moon

Most of the properties of the Earth–Moon system can be explained by a
collision between a planetary embryo (giant impactor) and the growing
Earth late in the accretion process1, 2, 3. Simulations show that most
of the material that eventually aggregates to form the Moon originates
from the impactor1, 4, 5. However, analysis of the terrestrial and lunar
isotopic compositions show them to be highly similar6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11.
In contrast, the compositions of other Solar System bodies are
significantly different from those of the Earth and Moon12, 13, 14,
suggesting that different Solar System bodies have distinct
compositions. This challenges the giant impact scenario, because the
Moon-forming impactor must then also be thought to have a composition
different from that of the proto-Earth. Here we track the feeding zones
of growing planets in a suite of simulations of planetary accretion15,
to measure the composition of Moon-forming impactors. We find that
different planets formed in the same simulation have distinct
compositions, but the compositions of giant impactors are statistically
more similar to the planets they impact. A large fraction of
planet–impactor pairs have almost identical compositions. Thus, the
similarity in composition between the Earth and Moon could be a natural
consequence of a late giant impact.

NASA: We’ll find alien life in 10 to 20 years

Are we alone in the universe? Top NASA scientists say the answer is
almost certainly “no.”

“I believe we are going to have strong indications of life beyond
Earth in the next decade and definitive evidence in the next 10 to 20
years,” Ellen Stofan, chief scientist for the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration, said at a public panel Tuesday in Washington.

“We know where to look, we know how to look, and in most cases we have
the technology,” she said.

Jeffery Newmark, interim director of heliophysics at the agency put it
this way: “It’s definitely not an if, it’s a when.”

However, if visions of alien invasions are dancing in your head, you can
let those go.

“We are not talking about little green men,” Stofan said. “We are
talking about little microbes.”

Over the course of an hourlong presentation, NASA leaders described a
flurry of recent discoveries that suggest we are closer than ever to
figuring out where we might find life in the solar system and beyond.

For example, Jim Green, director of planetary science at NASA, cited a
study that analyzed the atmosphere above Mars’ polar ice caps and
suggests that 50 percent of the planet’s northern hemisphere once had
oceans up to a mile deep, and that it had that water for a long period
of time — up to 1.2 billion years.

Small Near-Earth Asteroids as a Source of Meteorites

Jiří Borovička, Pavel Spurný, Peter Brown

(Submitted on 11 Feb 2015)

Small asteroids intersecting Earth's orbit can deliver extraterrestrial
rocks to the Earth, called meteorites. This process is accompanied by a
luminous phenomena in the atmosphere, called bolides or fireballs.
Observations of bolides provide pre-atmospheric orbits of meteorites,
physical and chemical properties of small asteroids, and the flux (i.e.
frequency of impacts) of bodies at the Earth in the centimeter to
decameter size range. In this chapter we explain the processes occurring
during the penetration of cosmic bodies through the atmosphere and
review the methods of bolide observations. We compile available data on
the fireballs associated with 22 instrumentally observed meteorite
falls. Among them are the heterogeneous falls Almahata Sitta (2008 TC3)
and Bene\v{s}ov, which revolutionized our view on the structure and
composition of small asteroids, the P\v{r}\'{\i}bram-Neuschwanstein
orbital pair, carbonaceous chondrite meteorites with orbits on the
asteroid-comet boundary, and the Chelyabinsk fall, which produced a
damaging blast wave. While most meteoroids disrupt into fragments during

Link between the potentially hazardous Asteroid (86039) 1999 NC43 and
the Chelyabinsk meteoroid tenuous

Abstract
We explored the statistical and compositional link between Chelyabinsk
meteoroid and potentially hazardous Asteroid (86039) 1999 NC43 to
investigate their proposed relation proposed by Borovička et al.
(Borovička, J., et al. [2013]. Nature 503, 235-237). First, using a
slightly more detailed computation we confirm that the orbit of the
Chelyabinsk impactor is anomalously close to the Asteroid 1999 NC43. We
find ∼(1-3) × 10-4 likelihood of that to happen by chance. Taking the
standpoint that the Chelyabinsk impactor indeed separated from 1999 NC43
by a cratering or rotational fission event, we run a forward probability
calculation, which is an independent statistical test. However, we find
this scenario is unlikely at the ∼(10-3-10-2) level. Secondly, we note
that efforts to conclusively prove separation of the Chelyabinsk
meteoroid from (86039) 1999 NC43 in the past needs to meet severe
criteria: relative velocity ≃1-10 m/s or smaller, and ≃100 km
distance (i.e. about the Hill sphere distance from the parent body). We
conclude that, unless the separation event was an extremely recent
event, these criteria present an insurmountable difficulty due to the
combination of strong orbital chaoticity, orbit uncertainty and
incompleteness of the dynamical model with respect to thermal
accelerations. This situation leaves the link of the two bodies
unresolved and calls for additional analyses. With that goal, we revisit
the presumed compositional link between (86039) 1999 NC43 and the
Chelyabinsk body. Borovička et al. (Borovička, J., et al. [2013].
Nature 503, 235-237) noted that given its Q-type taxonomic
classification, 1999 NC43 may pass this test. However, here we find that
while the Q-type classification of 1999 NC43 is accurate, assuming that
all Q-types are LL chondrites is not. Our experiment shows that not all
ordinary chondrites fall under Q-taxonomic type and not all LL
chondrites are Q-types. Spectral curve matching between laboratory
spectra of Chelyabinsk and 1999 NC43 spectrum shows that the spectra do
not match. Mineralogical analysis of Chelyabinsk (LL chondrite) and (8)
Flora (the largest member of the presumed LL chondrite parent family)
shows that their olivine and pyroxene chemistries are similar to LL
chondrites. Similar analysis of 1999 NC43 shows that its olivine and
pyroxene chemistries are more similar to L chondrites than LL chondrites
(like Chelyabinsk). Analysis of the spectrum using Modified Gaussian
Model (MGM) suggests 1999 NC43 is similar to LL or L chondrite although
we suspect this ambiguity is due to lack of temperature and phase angle
corrections in the model. While some asteroid pairs show differences in
spectral slope, there is no evidence for L and LL chondrite type objects
fissioning out from the same parent body. We also took photometric
observations of 1999 NC43 over 54 nights during two apparitions (2000,
2014). The lightcurve of 1999 NC43 resembles simulated lightcurves of
tumblers in Short-Axis Mode (SAM) with the mean wobbling angle
20°-30°. The very slow rotation of 1999 NC43 could be a result of
slow-down by the Yarkovsky-O'Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack (YORP) effect.
While, a mechanism of the non-principal axis rotation excitation is
unclear, we can rule out the formation of asteroid in disruption of its
parent body as a plausible cause, as it is unlikely that the rotation of
an asteroid fragment from catastrophic disruption would be nearly
completely halted. Considering all these facts, we find the proposed
link between the Chelyabinsk meteoroid and the Asteroid 1999 NC43 to be
unlikely.

Scientists Find One of World's Largest Asteroid Impact Zones in
Australia

It's believed to be the largest of its kind ever found, and it's buried
under miles of rock.

Scientists from the Australian National University say they've located a
248-mile-wide asteroid impact zone in the middle of the continent.

Recently published in the journal Tectonophysics, the research details
how the meteorite broke in two before it struck Earth and how the
geophysicist team found two scars from the impact.

Here's the catch: in the hundreds of millions of years since the twin
meteorites struck, the crater disappeared under layers of rock.

NASA finds surprising features in Chelyabinsk meteor debris

Researchers at NASA have reported new data revealing some of the
mysterious history of the Chelyabinsk meteor. The 20-meter object burst
into fragments over the city of Chelyabinsk in Russia over two years
ago, but this new data analysis sheds new light on the nature of the
meteor.

According to a report by Forbes, NASA has revealed that “the
meteor’s orbital parent body itself had likely been
geologically-impacted as many as a dozen times.”

While the impact of the meteor over Earth caused widespread destruction
in the area of Chelyabinsk, it only reached the ground in small
fragments.

Scientists studied two samples of the meteorite, weighing 15 and 20
grams respectively, to garner information about the meteor’s mineral
composition and age. These pieces are thought to have come from the
outer part of the meteor as it fragmented in Earth’s atmosphere. Based
on its composition, the Chelyabinsk object appears to be a chondrite –
a stony meteorite that resembles its parent body in composition.

The results of NASA’s analysis suggest that the parent body asteroid
may have formed about 4.5 billion years ago. However, Kevin Righter of
NASA explained that this age estimate was only one of several gauged
from different techniques used to calculate age.

Artifact Of Alien Technology? Quasicrystal With ‘Forbidden Symmetry’
Found In 4.5 Billion-Year-Old Meteorite

Scientists at Princeton University have discovered, in meteorite
recovered from a remote region of Russia, a crystal with “forbidden
symmetry,” that is, an unusual arrangement of atoms previously thought
to be impossible in naturally occurring crystals.

Although scientists are working under the assumption that the
quasicrystals are naturally occurring, some alien and UFO enthusiasts
have suggested they could be artifacts of alien technology preserved in
the meteorite.

The quasicrystal was discovered inside an ancient meteorite that crashed
into a remote region of the Koryak Mountains in Chukotka, northeastern
Russia, about 15,000 years ago. It was the second quasicrystal ever
discovered “in nature” by scientists.

The first quasicrystal was found in a different grain of the same
meteorite in 2009.

Scientists announced the discovery this week in a paper published in the
journal Scientific Reports.

Oddball 'Crystal' Survived Crash to Earth Inside Meteorite
by Elizabeth Howell, Live Science Contributor | March 18, 2015
07:53am ET

A bizarre crystal-like mineral recently found in a meteorite that
crashed to Earth perhaps 15,000 years ago adds more support for the idea
that the fragile structure can survive in nature. But how it formed at
the beginnings of the solar system is still a mystery.

The newfound mineral is called a quasicrystal because it resembles a
crystal, but the atoms are not arranged as regularly as they are in real
crystals. The quasicrystal hitched a ride to Earth on a meteorite that
zipped from space through Earth's atmosphere and crashed to the ground.
That process is generally a violent one that heats up the insides of
rocks, making the delicate quasicrystal's survival a surprise.

The difference between crystals and quasicrystals can be visualized by
imagining a tiled floor, said according to a statement by Princeton
University in a press release. Tiles that are six-sided hexagons can
fit neatly against each other to cover the entire floor. But five-sided
pentagons or 10-sided decagons laid next to each will result in gaps
between tiles.

A research group in the UA Lunar and Planetary Laboratory has found
evidence in meteorites that hint at the discovery of a previously
unknown region within the swirling disk of dust and gas known as the
protoplanetary disk - which gave rise to the planets in our solar
system.

Led by Kelly Miller, a doctoral student in the lab of Dante Lauretta,
the principal investigator of NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission, the team has
found evidence of minerals within meteorites that formed in an
environment that was enhanced in oxygen and sulfur and date from a time
before the particles stuck together, or accreted, to form larger
bodies such as asteroids and planets.

Miller will present the data at the 46th Lunar and Planetary Science
Conference, which is held March 16-20 in The Woodlands, Texas. The
results are in preparation for publication in a journal, but have not
been peer-reviewed yet.

The elements that later went on to constitute the major ingredients in
life on Earth - such as carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen -
originated as volatile gases in the protoplanetary disk when the solar
system was less than 10 million years old, Miller s

Looking skywards for job that rocks

Planetary scientists are monitoring 32 cameras that have been set up in
the WA bush to track and record meteorites, space debris and anything
else entering Earth's atmosphere.

As with the meteorite that was seen all over Perth yesterday, the Desert
Fireball Network team will attempt to retrieve remnants of any
meteorites believed to have survived the journey to Earth.

Professor Phil Bland, director of the Curtin University project, said
the network was the only meteorite research project in the world to
focus on the desert as a place to spot and find meteorites.

Great nights, great skies and if something lands, you've not vegetation
around, so it's lot easier to pick something up, which is the goal, he
said.

After going through the phase of building it up and doing a lot of
field work to get it out there, we're finally at the point now where we
can start looking at the data. What's exciting now is that we should be
going out and looking for meteorites.

Finding meteorite impacts in Aboriginal oral tradition

IMAGINE going about your normal day when a brilliant light races across
the sky. It explodes, showering the ground with small stones and sending
a shock wave across the land. The accompanying boom is deafening and
leaves people running and screaming.

This was the description of an incident that occurred over the skies of
Chelyabinsk, Russia on February 15, 2013, one of the best recorded
meteoritic events in history. This airburst was photographed and videoed
by many people so we have a good record of what occurred, which helped
explain the nature of the event.

But how do we find out about much older events when modern recordings
were not available?

A century before Chelyabinsk, a similar event occurred on July 30, 1908,
over the remote Siberian forest near Tunguska.

That explosion was even more powerful, flattening 80 million trees over
an area of 2,000 square kilometres and sending a shock wave around the
Earth - twice. It was 19 years before scientists reached the Tunguska
site to study the effects of the blast.

The apparent lack of a meteorite fuelled speculation about how it
formed, from sober suggestions of an exploding comet to more outlandish
claims of mini-black holes and crashed alien spacecraft (research
confirms it was an exploding meteorite).

Meteoric events in Indigenous oral tradition

In 1926, the ethnographer Innokenty Suslov interviewed the local
Indigenous Evenk people, who still vividly remembered the Tunguska
airburst.

At the time, a great feud persisted among Evenki clans. One clan called
upon a shaman named Magankan to destroy their enemy. On the morning of
July 30th, 1908, Magankan sent Agdy, the god of thunder, to demonstrate
his power.

Many Indigenous cultures attribute meteoritic events to the power of sky
beings. The Wardaman people of northern Australia tell of Utdjungon, a
being who lives in the Coalsack nebula by the Southern Cross.

He will cast a fiery star to the Earth if laws and traditions are not
followed. The falling star will cause the earth to shake and the trees
to topple.

Like the Evenki, it seems the Wardaman have faced Utdjungon's wrath
before.

The Luritja people of Central Australia also tell of an object that fell
to Earth as punishment for breaking sacred law. And we can still see the
scars of this event today.

Mohler lecture celebrates 40 years

For 40 years, the generosity of Dr. Robert and Mrs. Fern Shoemaker
Mohler has brought prominent speakers and cultural programs to McPherson
College, spanning academic disciplines and representing a wide range of
human experience and thinking. The first lecture in 1975 highlighted MC
professor Dr. H.H. Nininger, famous for his work on meteorites and
paleontology. In addition to providing information about Dr.
Nininger’s lifetime of knowledge in meteorites, it also functioned as
a 90th birthday party for both Dr. Nininger, the first speaker of the
lecture series, and Dr. Mohler, one of the lecture’s two
benefactors.Since then, speakers have included Dr. Elmer Staats,
comptroller of the currency of the United States in 1982; “Roots”
author Alex Haley in 1987; and Holocaust survivor Gerda Weissman Klein
in 2003.Susan Taylor, a granddaughter of Dr. Mohler who helps select the
speakers every year, said Haley’s lecture always stood out in her
mind.“The audience was just spellbound,” she said. “It was more
than an hour, but felt like a few minutes.” - See more at:

Meteorite Strikes Down Thief During Armed Robbery

A burglary ended in a very sudden and unexpected way yesterday, in
Orange County, when a gang member was killed by a falling meteorite
debris while he was holding three people at gunpoint in a Santa Ana
residence.

The criminal, Juan Pedro Sancho Jiménez, had just broken into a house
in the Eastside area of Santa Ana, when a meteorite fragment weighting
almost ½ pound pierced through the roof of the residence and hit him on
the top of the head. The well-known gang member who had already spent
eleven years in jail for sexual assault and armed robbery, was killed
almost instantly as the meteorite passed through his skull, destroyed
his spine and continued its way through many of his vital organs.

Officers from the Orange County Sheriff Department arrived on the site
only a few minutes after the incident, but the assailant was already
dead.

Two years on, source of Russian Chelyabinsk meteor remains elusive

Two years after a 20-meter rock slammed into the Earth after a meteoroid
dramatically fragmented in the atmosphere over the Chelyabinsk region in
Russia and injured hundreds of people, its parent asteroid remains
elusive, a new paper published in the journal Icarus shows.

Astronomers had originally predicted that a 2-km near-Earth asteroid
(NEA) designated (86039) 1999 NC43 could be the source body from which
the Chelyabinsk meteoroid was ejected prior to its encounter with the
Earth.

These two bodies shared similar orbits around the Sun, and initial
studies suggested even similar compositions, said Planetary Science
Institute research scientist Vishnu Reddy, lead author of Link Between
the Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (86039) 1999 NC43 and the Chelyabinsk
Meteoroid Tenuous that appears in Icarus.

However, reanalysis of the orbital parameters and spectral data by an
international team of researchers led by Reddy has shown that the link
between Chelyabinsk and 1999 NC43 is unlikely. The composition of
Chelyabinsk meteorite that was recovered after the event is similar to a
common type of meteorite called LL chondrites. However, the near-Earth
asteroid has a composition that is distinctly different from this,
Reddy said.

They study also showed that linking specific meteorites to an asteroid
is extremely difficult due to the chaotic nature of the orbits of these
bodies.

UK Scientists: Aliens May Have Sent Space Seeds To Create Life On Earth

Scientists in the U.K. have examined a tiny metal circular object, and
are suggesting it might be a micro-organism deliberately sent by
extraterrestrials to create life on Earth.

Don't be fooled by the size of the object in the microscopic image
above. It may appear to look like a planet-sized globe, but in fact,
it's no bigger than the width of a human hair.

The University of Buckingham reports that the minuscule metal globe was
discovered by astrobiologist Milton Wainwright and a team of researchers
who examined dust and minute matter gathered by a high-flying balloon in
Earth's stratosphere.

It is a ball about the width of a human hair, which has filamentous
life on the outside and a gooey biological material oozing from its
centre, Wainwright said, according to Express.co.uk.

One theory is it was sent to Earth by some unknown civilization in
order to continue seeding the planet with life, Wainwright
hypothesizes.

That theory comes from a Nobel Prize winner.

This seeming piece of science fiction -- called 'directed panspermia'
-- would probably not be taken seriously by any scientist were it not
for the fact that it was very seriously suggested by the Nobel Prize
winner of DNA fame, Francis Crick, said Wainwright.

Panspermia is a theory that suggests life spreads across the known
physical universe, hitchhiking on comets or meteorites.

The idea of directed panspermia was suggested by Crick, a molecular
biologist, who was the co-discoverer of the structure of DNA in 1953.
Twenty years later, Crick co-wrote -- with biochemist Leslie Orgel -- a
scientific paper about directed panspermia.

The abstract of their manuscript states:

[meteorite-list] UNM scientist studies the authenticity of meteorites

UNM scientist studies the authenticity of meteorites

In 2011, Carl Agee received a rock in the mail from a meteorite
collector in Morocco. At the time, nobody knew what it was or where it
had come from. Even for Agee, director of UNM’s Institute for
Meteoritics, the rock’s origin remained a mystery for quite some time.

“This collector sent it to me because no one knew what it was, and it
took me months of laboratory analyses to figure it out,” Agee said.

At the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, he tested the
rock’s chemical composition, isotopic composition, and mineralogy to
determine its makeup.

“From all of those different lines of evidence, the picture that
emerged was that it was a meteorite from Mars,” he said.

Now, Agee is being funded by NASA to study the meteorite, known as NWA
7034, or “Black Beauty” for its dark color.

There are several reasons why NASA is interested in Black Beauty. Tests
showed that it contains 10 to 30 times more water than any previously
studied Martian sample. Agee and his team also found that the meteorite
is composed of a variety of minerals, ranging from 4.4 to 2.1 billion
years old.

“There are different fragments of the Martian crust all together in
the same meteorite in addition to the water, so there’s a record of
the surface processes on Mars for about two billion years,” Agee said.

Black Beauty is also notable, Agee said, because it is very similar to
the rock samples that are currently being collected by the two rovers on
Mars, which use a robotic remote sensing technique to identify the
rocks’ composition.

“Black Beauty finally forms the first tangible meteorite link to the
rocks that NASA’s rovers are sampling in outcrops on Mars,” Agee
wrote in the Universities Space Research Association’s report for the
Eighth International Conference on Mars. He notes that the meteorite
provides insight into volcanic activity on the planet, which is one of
his research specialties.

While Agee is best known for his work in meteoritics, he was originally
trained as a geologist, which is how he began researching volcanoes. He
said he became interested in planetary geology while working on his
doctoral degree at Columbia University.

“If you’re trained in geology, planets are like whole new worlds to
map out and understand,” Agee said.

After finishing at Columbia, he taught at Harvard for eight years before
moving to Houston to work at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. He said he
came to UNM because he enjoys the intellectual atmosphere of a
university.

“I have contracts for NASA that I work on, so I’m still involved
with them,” Agee said. “In addition to Black Beauty, they have also
funded me for years to study the processes of planetary volcanism.”

He uses the department’s high-pressure laboratory to simulate the
conditions of planetary interiors to study the behavior of magma, he
said.

Scientists say meteorite “Black Beauty” found in Morocco is 4.4
billion years old from Mars

by Ben Kochmanon February 2, 2015

Scientists have concluded that the piece of meteorite found in the
desert of Morocco is 4.4 billion years old, and definitely came from
Mars. And dubbed NWA 7034 – you know, NorthWest Africa – or Black
Beauty – because it is predominantly black and not red like normal
space rocks from Mars.

Mars, usually called the Red Planet because of its characteristic red
features will reveal some unusual aspect of itself through Black Beauty.
Almost all meteors that fell from Mars were designated as SNC –
shergottites, nakhlites, or chassignites – meteors, because they
largely consist of igneous rocks made up of cooled volcanic materials.

However, researchers at Brown University in Rhode Island and the
University of New Mexico who’ve conducted new spectroscopic
examinations of the rock say Black Beauty is breccias – a
conglomeration of different types of rock that have been fused together
in a basaltic matrix. The components of the meteorite chemically match
rocks analyzed by NASA rovers on Mars, and this suggests that the stone
must have come from the dark crust that underlies Mar’s dusty reddish
surface.

And if this happens to be the case, then it might be the answer
scientists have been looking for in trying to explain why spectrographic
examination of SNC meteorites has never quite matched up with spectral
data of the Martian surface gathered from space.

Reporting their finding in the journal Icarus, “Most samples from Mars
are somewhat similar to spacecraft measurements,” said Brown
researcher Jack Mustard, “but annoyingly different.”

Using an imaging system developed by Massachusetts-based Headwall
Photonics to obtain detailed spectral imaging of the entire sample, lead
author Kevin Cannon said “Other techniques give us measurements of a
dime-sized spot. What we wanted to do was get an average for the entire
sample. That overall measurement was what ended up matching the orbital
data.”

This actually means Black Beauty might belong to the Martian dark plains
where the red dust coating is thin and the rocks beneath it exposed.
Black Beauty might be a sample of the “bulk background” rocks
believed to be hidden underneath the red dust of much of the Martian
surface.

“Mars is punctured by over 400,000 impact craters greater than 1 km in
diameter,” the researchers write. “Because brecciation is a natural
consequence of impacts, it is expected that material similar to NWA 7034
has accumulated on Mars over time.”

That’s what you’d expect on a planetary surface that has been broken
apart and then reassembled by constant bombardment and cosmic impacts,
the scientists affirm.

“This is showing that if you went to Mars and picked up a chunk of
crust, you’d expect it to be heavily beat up, battered, broken apart
and put back together,” Cannon said.

What Happens When Meteors Hit the Earth? Excerpt from Meteorites by
Ronnie McKenzie

Namibiana Buchdepot has shared an excerpt from Meteorites: A Southern
African Perspective by Ronnie McKenzie, a comprehensive yet
straightforward guide to meteorites for anyone interested in this
far-reaching topic.

In the excerpt, McKenzie explains what happens to meteors that appear to
be heading towards the earth but never enter the atmosphere, and what
happens when they actually do hit the surface.

“If the observer does not hear any noise at all, then the meteor has
either not landed, or the point of impact is too far away, despite the
impression that it must have been just over the next hill,” McKenzie
writes, disclosing details about the speed and debris of meteor showers.

Read the short excerpt to learn more about this interesting phenomenon:

Although they appear to be heading downwards, they may, in reality, be
120 km or more above the ground and passing over the horizon, possibly
without dropping in altitude at all. Such meteors simply start to burn
up, in many cases forming spectacular fireballs, but they do not explode
or ever come close to landing on Earth. After a display lasting perhaps
just a few seconds, they travel back out into space, never to be seen
again. If a meteor does in fact hit the surface of the Earth or if it
explodes above the surface, it creates a significant noise either from
the impact itself or from the associated shock wave. In both cases, the
noise from the sonic boom can be heard and/ or felt more than 100 km
away.

SHAWNEE, Kan. – A group of local middle school students are lobbying
to change state history. The students with Monticello Trails Middle
School, which is part of the De Soto School District, are headed to
Topeka to argue for an official state rock.

Chris Sprenger, an 8th grade student at the school, is determined to
make the meteorite the official Kansas state rock.

“The meteorite really has a connection with Kansas that it really
doesn’t have with any of the other states in the U.S.,” Sprenger
said.

Sprenger and more than 100 other students in the district pitched the
bill to Representative Brett Hildabrand.

Lobbying for a state rock has challenged the students across the board.
In social studies they’ve learned how bills are passed, in science
they’ve learned about geology and rocks and in communication arts
they’ve spent hours working on their proposal essays.

Top 10 Biggest Meteor Strikes in History

Our beloved blue planet gets pelted with debris from space all the time
but, since most of it burns up or break apart in the atmosphere, it's
usually not a problem. Even when one does make it to the ground, they
are rarely much larger than a small rock, minimizing the damage they're
capable of inflicting.

Then, of course, there is that once-in-an-eon occasion where something
very very large makes it through intact, and this can really do some
damage. Fortunately, such hits are extremely rare, but they are worth
noting, if only to serve as reminders of the power of the stars to undo
the normal routine here on Earth, with little more than a few minutes'
warning. So where — and when — did these monsters hit? Let's take a
look at the geological records, and see.

Scientists decode magnetic message from ancient asteroid

by Felix Balthasar, Jan 24, 2015

A team of scientists led by Dr. Richard Harrison of the University of
Cambridge, U. K., claimed to have decoded ancient recordings from
fragments of an asteroid dating to the start of our solar system.

According to the scientists, tiny space magnets in meteorites retain a
memory of birth as well as death of the asteroid's core. Using a
powerful X-ray microscope, dubbed synchrotron, they read the signals
created more than four--a-half billion years ago, soon after the solar
system came into existence.

They used an intense beam of X-rays to image the nanoscale magnetisation
of the meteoritic metal, which allowed them to capture the precise
moment when the core of that meteorite's parent asteroid froze, putting
an end to that meteorite's magnetic field.

The particular meteorites used for the study are known as pallasites,
which are primarily composed of iron and nickel, studded with
gem-quality silicate crystals.

Scientists believe that the magnetic signals written in the fragments of
space rock would give them a sneak preview of the fate of Earth's
magnetic core, which continues to freeze.

Meteorite mineral named after beer is time capsule
15:55 22 January 2015 by Catherine Brahic
For similar stories, visit the Solar System and Cosmology Topic Guides

Take a deep breath. Can you taste the flavour of ancient space? Nitrogen
in Earth's atmosphere has been traced back to the spinning disc of dust
and gas that formed our solar system, and may even have yielded ammonia
to fuel organic reactions. This all comes courtesy of a meteorite found
in Antarctica named after a popular brand of beer.

Our [meteorite] samples were collected in Antarctica in the late
1970s, says Dennis Harries of The Friedrich-Schiller University in
Jena, Germany. They fell there hundreds or thousands of years ago.
Known as chondritic meteorites, their history goes back some 4.6 billion
years. At that time, our solar system was a vast disc of dust and gas,
called the protoplanetary disc, spinning around the sun.

Harries and his colleagues were studying the make-up of the meteorites
when they found a mineral called carlsbergite, named after the Carlsberg
Foundation, an offshoot of the Danish brewery, which funded previous
work on it.

Carlsbergite is a rare composite of chromium and nitrogen. Because of
the meteorite's age, it acts like a time capsule, telling us about the
form these elements were in while our planet was forming. Looking at the
ratio of nitrogen isotopes in his samples, Harries found that it was
very close to the ratio in the nitrogen that makes up two-thirds of
Earth's atmosphere today. That suggests they have a common origin, and
the nitrogen in our atmosphere came from the protoplanetary disc.

From a cold start

As for the formation of the carlsbergite itself, Harries imagines a
dusty volume of space in which dust grains were freely floating in a
very thin gas – almost a vacuum. These grains may have been covered by
thin shells of ice containing ammonia and other compounds.

How Early Earth Got Its Nitrogen

Jan 20, 2015 01:30 PM ET // by Stuart Gary, ABC Science Online

Nitrogen may have arrived on Earth in ancient meteorites after the
planet had already formed, according to a new study.

Reported in the journal Nature Geoscience, the research illustrates how
meteorites -- often portrayed as portents of doom and destruction -- may
actually have been key to the development of life on Earth.

Scientists have long puzzled over the origin of Earth's nitrogen because
it has a different isotopic composition to nitrogen produced by the sun,
and is also different to the nitrogen found in comets.

The True Story of Ann Hodges: History’s Only Meteorite Victim
  January 16, 2015
  By First to Know

Getting hit by a falling meteor is far more uncommon than getting struck
by lighting. How uncommon you might ask?

There is only one confirmed person in history to have ever been hit by
one. And she had the evidence to prove it.

Back in November 1954, Ann Hodges was taking a nap in her Sylacauga,
Alabama, home when a rock about 12 inches in circumference came crashing
through the ceiling. The meteorite then collided with her thigh, leaving
behind a large, conspicuous bruise. Thankfully, it didn’t smash into
her head, or the scene would have been much more gruesome.

When word got around about the meteor, the entire town flocked to her
home. There were so many people curious to see what happened that she
became extremely nervous and had to be taken to the hospital. Because
she was a simple country woman, she wasn’t used to all the attention.
  It made her frenzied.

  The incident didn’t end there.

Despite a government geologist confirming that the object was, in fact,
a meteorite, police confiscated it and requested the Air Force’s
verification. Many people in the tiny town thought the smoke trails in
the sky and loud explosion meant a plane had crashed, while others,
paranoid by the Cold War, blamed the Soviets. The object needed some
  clearing up.

Once verified, the only other thing left to do was figure out who the
rock belonged to. Of course, Hodges believed it was rightfully hers to
  keep.

“I feel like the meteorite is mine,” she said, according to the
Alabama Museum of Natural History. “I think God intended it for me.
  After all, it hit me!”

But, as luck would have it, she wasn’t the only person wanting to
stake a claim for the space rock. Her landlady, Birdie Guy, wanted to
  keep it for herself.

Guy found a lawyer and sued Hodges, alleging that it was hers because it
landed on her property. Although the law was leaning in her favor, the
community wasn’t too happy about that verdict. So, in exchange for
$500, they settled out of court.

Soon after, the woman and her husband, Eugene, received an offer from
the Smithsonian for the rock, though they turned it down — hoping to
score a better offer. An offer they’d never get.

No one approached them to purchase the controversial entity. In 1956,
the Hodges wound up donating it to the museum. If you’re interested in
checking it out, it’s still on display.

The entire story is just a little heartbreaking, especially when you
consider that Ann suffered a nervous breakdown from the meteorite
  hysterics.

According to the museum, “she never did recover” from the frenzy
  that followed that fateful day.

  The couple later separated

Study shows how planetary building blocks evolved from porous to hard
objects

(Phys.org)—Thinking small has enabled an international team of
scientists to gain new insight into the evolution of planetary building
blocks in the early solar system.

The researchers compared the results of small-scale numerical
simulations of colliding rock and dust particles to the composition of
meteorites. They found that collisions helped transform initially porous
materials into the more highly solidified asteroids and meteorites
observed today. The team of seven scientists published their evidence
last month in Nature Communications.
Planetary scientists study chondritic meteorites to reconstruct planet
formation. These meteorites are made of a mixture of solid chondrules,
millimeter-sized beads (the approximate width of a penny) that became
embedded in a fluffy matrix.

she was a simple country woman, she wasn’t used to all the attention.

The couple later separated, and, in 1972, she went on to die of kidney
 failure in a nursing home.

She “wasn’t a person who sought out the limelight. The Hodges were
just simple country people, and I really think that all the attention
was her downfall,” explained museum director Randy Mecredy.

What makes this woman’s story so rare is that meteorites typically
fall into the ocean or land somewhere desolate (not on top of a woman
napping on her couch), according to Michael Reynolds, a Florida State
 College astronomer.

“Think of how many people have lived throughout human history,”
Reynolds said. “You have a better chance of getting hit by a tornado
and a bolt of lightning and a hurricane all at the same time.”

In the photo above, Moody Jacobs reveals her bruise from the incident.
