[meteorite-list] Find, Fall Terminology

2013-01-07 Thread Thomas Webb
All,
The terms find and fall are concise and understood by everyone in the
meteorite community. I don't see the need to introduce terms that may lead to
more ambiguity. For example: if find is changed to unobserved fall in
describing a meteorite it could possibly be an outright false statement since
it could have been observed by many people but never reported or recorded.
Also, do we include other animals when we refer to observed? Who knows who
or what observed one of those that we call find, so let's just leave it at
that and continue to call it a find. The term fall as it is now used
means that we have a pretty good record that someone actually saw it streak
through the atmosphere and recoveries were soon made in the projected fall
area. In some cases people have witnessed the actual impact or impacts as they
happened but this is not required to call it a fall. Occasionally it may be
years before a witnessed event produces
recovered meteorites but if we know the fall area we can tie it to the event
and still call it a probable fall and end up using just fall with a fairly
high degree of accuracy.
For practicality and to tie in with what has been used and understood for
years, I think we should continue to use the terms find and fall.
My best,
Thomas

 Hello List,

I went out for a walk today and found a most interesting
 rock. It was
 light tan,
nearly white looking against the dark stones and I didn't
 think much of
it,  just a concretion or something, until I bent over
 and looked at it
closer and saw flow lines. It doesn't attract to a neodymium
 magnet at
all, none, but I do think it may be a weathered chondrite.
 It certainly
 is
oriented and the flow lines are obvious. I'd like to take a

but haven't been able to decide how to go about it yet. It
 weighs
 around a kilo, just guessing.

  Hi List,

We just wanted to say what a great time we had in
Tucson. It is always exciting to see all of our friends in
the meteorite community as well as meeting new meteorite
enthusiasts. We saw some great meteorites including a huge
Semychan meteorite in Marvin Kilgore's display. The Birthday
Bash was a lot of fun for everyone, even the fuzzy white
cat. A special thanks to John Blennert for giving us a
wonderful insight on hunting the Gold Basin strewnfield. If
it wasn't for John I probably still wouldn't know what a
meteorite looks like! Thanks to Michael Blood for a great
auction. Everyone enjoys the auction and the camaraderie.
Twink's Gold Basin cake was delicious. Some lucky winners
were able to  find a meteorite in their pieces of cake!
Ruben and the Woodell's did a terrific job with the live
broadcast. Arizona Keith and Gary Fujihara were
excellent  at capturing the pictures and getting them
online for everyone. The weather started out very cold but
today it is 70 degrees at 5PM.  If any of you get a
chance you should check out Geoff Notkin's new meteorite
hunting book. Another must have for your collection. On a
side note Brix took his snake avoidance training refresher
course. We used live rattlesnakes that had been muzzled
(that's something to see a muzzled rattlesnake). Within
moments Brix picked up the scent of the snake and made a
hasty retreat to the car. We are glad to see he has retained
his training and remembers the smell of a rattler.

 Hi Everyone:

Part of the reason Nancy and I finally resigned as Editors
 of Meteorite
was the lack of transparency with respect to things like
 subscriptions and
how they were handled (Maria Haas, Nancy, and I tried to
 resolve this when
we worked on the August issue, just before things happened
 that led to our
resignation). I do not know how this might change now that
 everything is
being done at the University of Arkansas where the magazine
 is actually
 published.

If you only received the first issue, it is because you did
 not pay for
2010. Subscribers get the February issue and a notice to
 renew (not sure
how this is done) and if they do not hear from you, I think
 that they just
let your subscription expire (at least that is how I think
 it worked).
Not the way I would like to see it handled and maybe with
 new people in
 Arkansas, things will improve.

 Frustrated ex-editor.

 looking for issue 2!!!

Hi List. I apologize that I have been
away off the list for a long time. The reason is I decided
to fulfill a long awaited dream of mine and create a website
dedicated to meteorites and astronomy. I spent about a year
and almost 2000 hours researching to put this together and
ended up to be much longer then I anticipated. For those who
know me I wanted to do it right and do not like to cut
corners. This site is dedicated on my daughters birthday
today, but is for all of you collectors out there and
especially for those new to the field. There is no site like
it in the world in my opinion. My eBay Info page will help
many newbie's to the hobby and many of you will agree after
viewing it, that it was about time something so detailed
came along, which will help many new and veteran collectors.
Though I have not listed any meteorites as of yet (shooting
for first of the year) on my meteorite sales page, my format
will be different then most of the dealers and sellers who
already sell on their sites. I will not have the variety
like they do. My plan is to only put up several type each
couple of months. Those meteorites will be the rarest of the
rare and hardest to acquire and or most historical. I posted
about 5 months ago on my intentions of this website which is
called Cosmic Treasures Celestial Wonders and wanted to
thank those that contacted me with what I needed. I hope you
will take the time to look over my site as it is very
educational and the resources and tools will hopefully put
me in your favorites! I designed this site for the new
astronomer and new meteorite collector by using the many
years I have involved with astronomy and meteorites and from
the lessons I have learned. I hope my experience will
suffice to all of you out there. Please feel free to pass my
site along to those who you feel will gain from it. Hope you
enjoy it and glad to finally have time to get back to the
real world! My site address is below.

I believe Sonny is a good guy and an asset to the meteorite
community.  Having said that, I object to your
disparaging terminology, backwards hillbilly and redneck
as well as cue the banjos.
I'm a hillbilly from North Carolina and proud of it.
If you must talk about the judge and others from the area do
it off the list or if you must use offensive terms on the
list, which is forbidden by list policy, at least use some
that would not be directed to a certain region.
Perhaps you could just use that word which begins with a and
ends with e, which seems to be universally understood and is
not considered to be endemic to any specific area.

Re: [meteorite-list] Matters Arising

2010-02-03 Thread Thomas Webb
Elizabeth,
Thank you for your defense of us who live in Southern USA. I still feel a
little touchy about a discussion that occurred on the list several years ago,
soon after I joined, in which those of us who live in Southern USA were made
fun of, and to compound it, one of those who made the most disparaging remarks
works for a governmental agency and is being paid with our tax dollars!
The terms hicks and rednecks do not neccessarily equate with
unintelligent. Some of the best thinkers I know of have been, at times,
referred to in this manner by some people from our northern states. I'm sure
constitutional attorney Sam Ervin who referred to himself as just a country
lawyer is one of them (he lived in a town about 30 miles from me). I think
it's unfortunate that Peter used these terms to express his displeasure with
the gun photos while I defend his right to show displeasure. I live in an area
of NC largely settled by Scottish Highlanders and where we have the best
Highland Games in the country. I would invite Peter and all of you to come
this year, the second week in July. I think the photos were all in fun but in
retrospect those involved probably wish they had kept them private.
I will mention another term, meteorite, just to keep this legal for the list
:).
My best,
Thomas

 Hey Ya'll!

I don't know the individuals involved on either side of
this discussion. But not all gun owners are irresponsible.
As I'm sure not all Scots are arrogant drunkards. (See
 stereotyping can go both ways!)

And while I was not pleased to see the photos showing the
irresponsible handling of the guns (sure, take your pics,
keep them private, but to show them publicly??), I do
believe in the right to bear arms!

However, I was even more taken aback by Peter's statement
never thought I would see the day when I would be sharing
 correspondence with hicks and rednecks!

And what is wrong with a 'hick' or 'redneck'??

As an exchange student in Germany 20 years ago, I was
explaining to one of my German friends what a redneck was (I
am from the American south... South Carolina!)... And I
started to describe it in somewhat derogatory terms
until her father walked in and past and I saw he had one of
the reddest necks I've ever seen and he was a hardworking
farmer... I managed to correct myself before I insulted
 him.

I have found that many 'hicks' and 'rednecks' are in fact
well educated and more tolerant than Peter shows himself to
 be!

I captured a Leonids picture last
 night!

 http://www.mikesastrophotos.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/leonoid.jpg

At the time I was focused on Procyon and shooting
 continuously and
waiting and watching. I saw a meteor radiate directly out
 of Procyon
and was like NO WAY!  But I check the camera screen
 and couldn't see
anything. I didn't realize I caught it until this morning
 when I was
 reviewing the pics.

Its pretty faint, at the time my f ratio was jacked up at
 f/5. I've
since lowered it and ordered a new lens that can do f/1.4.

It was much brighter in person, its a little faint in the
 pic. Still
 really happy I caught it.

For reference purposes: I was using a Canon 20D, piggy back
 mounted on
my telescope with ISO 800, f/5 focal ratio and a 60 second
 exposure.

 would
  seem they received that
typo from Svend whose website says the same=2
 0thing
  at the moment, on page
5 of his superb article when discussing the
 support
  between the two
different fall dates (4 days apart):

This is not the case. In my report I simply quoted
 the
  information received
through the classifying institute. Of course the lab
  submitted their data
directly to the editors in charge and not through me.
 So
  concerning this point
the Bulletin and my report share the same sources but
 do
  not depend on each
other. As you may see, the passage in question was
 set in
  quotation marks in my
article because I quoted the author's words. I also
 named
  the author to make it
clear that I am not the originator of the dates given
 for
  the measurements.
    The text says December-January 2006 and I
 totally
  agree with you it should
  better read December-January 2006[-2007], however,
  December 2006 for the
time of the radionuclide measurements makes perfect
 sense
  to me.

As far as the fall date is concerned, that indeed is
 a
  tricky question. This is
  what I can contribute:

For the very first find of Bassikounou that became
 public,
  the 3 kg El Moichine
mass, October 12 was reported by the owner of that
 mass.
  However this particular
meteorite had already changed hands several times and
  so had the information
assigned to it. To my knowledge this particular date,
  October 12, was then
forwarded to the classifying institute together with
 the
  classification sample
by the owner of that mass. A process I was not
 involved
  in.

When Matthias and I started our research we had not
 much
  more to rely on but
this date and the information from the owner of the
 first
  mass. It was not even
known by that time that Bassikounou was a multiple
 fall.
That is why we used the
October 12 date in the early correspondence on the
 fall
  too. However in the
course of our work it turned out that most eye
 witnesses as
  well as the local
media reports gave of October 16 as the fall date.
  Accordingly we corrected the
date in our papers and subsequently in the online
 version
  of our report. We also
forwarded these findings together with the article in
  Horizons to the
  researchers in charge.

Public and private research has chronologically
 overlapped
  in the case of the
publication of the Bassikounou fall in the
 Meteoritical
  Bulletin. Thus it is
regrettable and at the same time totally
 comprehensible
  that a variation occurs.
I am convinced that the issue will be thorroughly
 cleared
  by the author's of the
submission text once they are noticed of the
 discrepancy by
  the editor in
  charge.

Contrary to any peer- and committee-reviewed system a
  private online editor has
the invaluable vantage that he is able to react quite
  promptly to emerging new
facts. Besides my own website describes just a hand
 full of
  falls which makes it
quite easy to keep track of new evidence. And because
 I am
  just a one man show
not even all of the corrections kindly forwarded to me
 make
  it online in time.
The Meteoritical Bulletin data base however deals with
 ten
  thousand entries
which are constantly reviewed under very high
 standard. An
  incredible ammount of
time and effort is put into it by the editors to
 maintain
  these
standards. The Bulletin's data base has achieved a
  quality that is hardly
matched by any other public access databases in
 comparable
  fields. One has to
admit this before pointing to obvious errors.

  Best regards

  Svend

Jim and List,
The bulletin shows a discrepancy concerning the fall date. In the data table
it gives October 12, 2006 but in the writeup it is October 16. I belive I was
the first to offer any on ebay and at that time I gave the fall date as Oct. 12
and still have that date in my database. However, perhaps a corrected date was
offered later.
Can someone give us confirmation of the actual date that it fell?
Thanks,
Thomas

  Hi Doug

the analysis was done by P. Weber, PPGUN.

The results are from the Meteoritical Bulletin
 Database.

In the Meteoritical Bulletin Database the fall date
 is
  still Oct. 16 -
  so officially it's Oct. 16, isn't it!

I only found a hint why some sources mention Oct. 12
 for
  the fall date!

  Cheers, Peter

  2009/10/11 Mexicodoug mexicod...@aim.com:
   Hi List, Peter,

Could you give a little more detail, as 22Na has
 a
  half life of about 950
days and the experimental uncertainty of that
  particular measurement
apparently used to calculate the ratio was 11.6%,
 not
  to mention worse
uncertainties with the 26Al. It says the
 measurement
  was between December
   and January of 2006.

So for starters, did they measure the meteorite
 9
  months before it fell?
OK, so maybe it is a typo in the link you gave
 (source
  or on line
Meteoritical Bulletin, but the same January 2006
 date
  is currently on
Svend´s website) and say they are both typos
 which
  may or may not say
something about precision: and should read
 January
  2007.

If we assume the measurements were taken about 75
 days
  after the fall and we
throw around a ten percent order of magnitude as
 the
  possible measurement
error, would not the difference of 4 days
 (October 12
  vs. Oct. 16) be
   totally lost in the error?

It is more likely the measurements were just to
 prove
  it was a fresh fall,
but the ability to distinguish four days based on
 a
  bunch of assumptions of
the original composition seems far-fetched to me.
 That
  must be what the
   scientists set out to prove.

So, maybe the gamma spectroscopist had received
 the
  October 12 date and only
set out to prove it was reasonable. Surely if
 they had
  received the October
16 date, they would have allowed it as consistent
 as
  well - after all, over
99.7% of the 22Na would still be there (did I do
 that
  right?), and this is
   dwarfed by the experimental error.

As Jim mentioned I think a real witness needs to
 speak
  up ... the press, as
reported by Svend Buhl, has October 16 as the
 fall
  date. So at the moment,
it would seem the press is preferable to
 insignificant
  digits being
   extended...

   Best wishes,
   Doug

   Hello Thomas,

   Cosmogenic radionuclides:
   (P. Weber, PPGUN) Gamma-spectroscopy performed
 in
  December-January
2006 showed the presence of the following
  radionuclides: 48V, 46Sc,
   56Co, 54Mn, 58Co, 7Be, 51Cr, 57Co, 22Na, 26Al
 and
  60Co.

   Recalculated to 12 October 2006 22Na was
 38.0±2.2 and
  26Al 31.5±2.1
(both dpm/kg), the activity ratio of 1.21 is
 fully

[meteorite-list] Richard Norton

2009-05-28 Thread Thomas Webb

Dorothy and all,
How do you spell meteorite?-O-R-I-C-H-A-R-D-N-O-R-T-O-N. This name is
irrevocably tied to meteorites and their study. Richard has done more to
popularize and introduce the world to meteorites and meteoritics through his
wonderful books than any person I can think of. Richard states in his preface
to the second edition of Rocks From Space that he wrote it to fill an obvious
void. That void was most admirably filled! The book was enthusiastically
received by both amateurs and scientists and continues to be the best
introduction to meteorites available, and Dorothy, your art on the cover makes
it most visually appealing as well as the artwork for his follow-up books, The
Cambridge Encyclopedia of Meteorites and the Field Guide to Meteors and
Meteorites.
The name and the works of Richard Norton will live on in all of us who love
meteorites. Dorothy, as you grieve the loss of Richard's physical presence in
your life may God's grace and His peace that passes all understanding be with
you in the days to come and until you meet again.

Sterling and list,
I find very little controversy involved with SIL and
their sister organization Wycliffe. I have allowed
their aviation enabling arm (JAARS) to train their
new pilots in a field I own for several years now and
have found them to be one of the best groups of people
as well as the most competent pilots that I have ever
met. Each pilot is also an airframe and power-plant
mechanic. They use short take-off and landing
airplanes which allows them to get into and out of my
20 acre field which is ringed with trees. This field
is to their liking because it allows them to simulate
to their trainees the type of flying that will be
required in many remote areas around the world where
they are doing translation work. They don't ask for
money but many Churches and other organizations give
them support and they seem to get enough to do the
work.
To make this relate to meteorites, this group has
asked me to speak to their trainees on meteorites and
show them some examples on several occasions and I
have complied. It is always gratifying to see how
interested they are in the subject. They're primarily
concerned with translating the Bible, but I'll
question them to see if they know how many of these
languages might have reference to meteorites in them.
Thanks and

  Jakub,

When is the last time you emailed me? 5 or 6
 months ago?
Because this is the 1st time, since our
 transaction that I
have heard anything about this one.

Back then I answered your emails. Back then I told
 you I
had shipped it and back then I communicated with
 you just
  fine.

NO. I don't answer every email on the same
 subject,
especially when overseas shipping can take time
 ... a long
time. I have had this problem before, and I
 believe
everyone finally did receive their item. Maybe, a
 year
later, but that was not MY FAULT!

True Story: I sent out several thousands of
 dollars worth
of the Rare Fall, Weston... I sent it out Global
 Priority
Mail. It never showed up. I was surprised because
 I had
never lost a Global Priority before. I sent a
  replacement.. Registered Mail, Thousands of
 dollars more
of Weston. IT NEVER Showed up. This was to
 Germany. The
buyer thought I was a thief. I thought the buyer a
 thief.
I began to slowly refund the money... I was pissed
 because
I thought I was scammed. About a year or more
 later, one
of the packages was found in the basement of the
 next door
neighbor. They found this package while cleaning
 their
basement. My buyer was not home when the package
 came, so
the postman gave it to the neighbor... and she
 finally
gave it to my client a year later! The second
 package is
  still missing in Germany.

In the 10 years I have been doing this... I have
 sent over
20,000 packages. I have over 9,000 (NINE THOUSAND)
Positive feedbacks on Ebay, and that is just my
 ebay
business. I have sold thousands of meteorites to
 hundreds
of happy customers. I have refunded every purchase
 that
was lost in the mail or if the person was
 dissatisfied.

Also, there is NO WAY to track your shipment
 outside the
USA. At that time I do not believe that service
 was
available on the way I sent it.

ALSO, when you elect to play the Customs Game,
 that is,
no or little value decalred on the item and you
 want to
insure it for the full amount, remember I told you
 I don't
do that. It is illegal. I did recommend that you
 insure
it, but that amount would be declared on the
 customs
invoice and you would have to pay your customs
 fee. If the
buyer elects to have NO VALUE placed on the item,
 as to
avoid custom fees, then they forfeit all rights to
 a
  refund.

I have had maybe 25 lost packages, (In 10 years)
 and I
believe I have refunded or replaced the items in
 all of
these cases, unless there was some other
 agreement.

In my experience, Italy is the worst place to send
anything to... Eastern Europe is second and
 Germany has
sometimes the worst delays.. (Due to Customs).
 This
statement is not intended to be slander or to be
 mean, but
some countries have a terrible postal system, with
 thieves
  , delays, and other problems...

I am in the business to sell meteorites... not
 play games.
CUSTOMER POSTAL SERVICESELLER. The party in
 the middle
  is sometimes to blame!

  Best Wishes

 Greetings to All:
This is my first post to
this list. I have been collecting for several years,
and have a small collection built up, mostly
Allende, with some Murchison, Gibeon, Henbury,
Campo, a small slice of Zagami, NWA 482, some
 olivine diogenite.
I'd like to thank Dean Bessey for my first
little piece of Zagami, some years back when he
lived in Toronto. I gave that to a friend of mine
for his fiftieth birthday. I got another one later
from another dealer, can't remember his name.
I received some Allende from Mike Farmer a few
years ago, and from Eric Twelker some Allende and
 Murchison. Thankyou again guys.
And to Rob Wesel, thanks for the olivine
diogenite. Still waiting for word from Ted Bunch.
I'd also like to thank Steve Arnold. And there
are a few others, but I can't remember all the
dealers that I have purchased from over the years.
 But thanks anyways.
Anyways, it looks like everyone that I have
purchased from over the years is on this list. Maybe
one or two who are not.
You guys all helped build my collection and
bring me as close to space as I will ever get. So
 thankyou so much to everyone.

Hi, all,

I'm not a chemist, but the way you wrote that, it might be
misinterpreted by
some to identify Isopropyl alcohol is the same as Ethanol, which it's
not.
The connection to each other is that both have been referred to as
rubbing
alcohol.

Cautions when using either with meteorites:

Don't use the 70% isopropyl - the 30% is water, which is what you want
to
avoid. I use the 99% isopropyl and 95% ethanol without any ill effect
seen
on the stones.

They are more flammable in these purer forms, so ventilate!

The fumes of isopropyl are poisonous! Ventilate.

Cheers,

Hi Giovani,

Yes firstly take them out of plastic! Any moisture/chemicals trapped in
the rock will stay in the rock if it is in plastic, you only want to put
dry, stable material into plastic boxes, (or use dessicant/silica gel
with the rock and recharge it regularly).

As Adam suggested you can also use Iso-alcohol (pure ethanol) it's good
for getting rid of moisture in extreme cases but make sure it is 'pure
anhydrous alcohol' or you will be putting more water in than you take
out! - also gently warm the slice afterwards to drive off any moisture
then sand with very very fine sanding paper.

They also preferably need to be kept somewhere dry like inside a cabinet
with dessicators inside, or better still a dehumidifier.

Most slices reach a stable point eventually once you have done this!

Best

Hi,
I noticed that a coupled of slices (Ghubara and NWA 869) I bought few
months ago from two different dealers, are producing some small liquid
droplets of rusty appearance. After cleaning, the droplets develope
again in a matter of few weeks. Any idea about how to cure it? The
samples are stored in plastic envelopes but without any particular
desicant.

Re: [meteorite-list] Not Proud of Tom

2007-03-04 Thread Thomas Webb
Anne List,
I agree with Anne. The real former member of the list
who the fictional character was based on had to
finally quit the list due to the ridicule he received
through this character portrayal. He was an
enthusiastic meteorite collector with some personal
problems at the time and the meteorites seemed to help
him cope with his problems. His mistake evidently was
that he declared himself 'the proudest member of the
IMCA', and I believe he really was proud to be
associated with the organization, but some people
jumped on this and rode it into the ground. I don't
think it is ever honorable to have fun at the expense
of others. We can laugh at ourselves and
good-naturedly poke fun at our friends when they are
agreeable to it, but I saw nothing of this with that
particular character.
Another list member, whom I respect as I do Michael,
tried some offbeat humor a couple of years ago which
didn't go over well with some. He saw his mistake,
apologized and withdrew it, and that was the end of
it. He continues to make great contributions to the
list.
I am not referring to our members who flare up or
argue occasionally, and who agree to disagree. They
are basically good people who most of us have respect
for and who have made many contributions to our hobby,
but who argue, sometimes very heatedly, to make some
valid points.
The list is in the best shape it's been in for some
time, so let's try to keep uplifting our members as we
are presently doing with those who are sick and
hurting, and also endeavor to not be the cause of pain
or mental anguish for any member.
Respectfully,
Thomas H. Webb

Although this is not reflected in the list of rules on
the Meteorite Central Page, this update was directly
from Art. I don't mind the ads being more frequent
than that but I thought all of you might like to read
what Art had to say on it a little over a year ago
when this subject had heated up again.
My best,

It was clarified long ago that there is no

PS: As for Chaos on the list - that's ALWAYS been
 what this list
is - chaotic - nearly, dare I say, anarchistic? The
 one exception is Art's

suspends or even bans them. Other than that, anarchy
 pretty much
 manifests throughout the list.

Re: [meteorite-list] Further precision re Bessey Specks

2006-10-17 Thread Thomas Webb
Steve, Dean and list,
Thanks for this post Steve. It clearly shows that one
person showing empathy for another can overcome
mountainous differences. Occasionally we get these
brief glimpses of caring which transcend even our
great love for meteorites and within these moments we
begin to realize more deeply and transparently those
things which are most important.
My best to all,
Thomas

--- Steve Schoner [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

All of this brings to my mind the entire Bessey
 Speck issue. Back
then, nine or so years ago I took extreme objection
 to such.

Well in 2003 in the month of January, I came down
 with ADEM... I nearly
 died.

 But I recovered.

And I received from many of you messages wishing me
 well, from all over
 the world.

 Well... Back to Bessey Specks...

Dean sent me a package and letter of condolence
 which the nurse opened
read to me, and inside the package was a round
 cylinder very tightly
taped together, and there was a card with it with
 the words SAYH AL
 UHAYMIR 90

At the time, I was speechless, (literally) and the
 nurse was perplexed.
She thought that there was something inside the
 plastic capsule but
could not open it due to the fact that it was so
 tightly taped. After
a while, she gave up and left it on my bedside desk.
  At that time I
could not use my right arm, which was paralyzed
 along with my leg and
everything else on my right side. Others came in
 and noticed it at my
beside, read the letter to me again, and a few tried
 to open it to show
 what Dean had sent.

In my weird state of mind and being I was curious,
 too. I had no idea
what the gift was. The name meant nothing to me
 in my then weird
state of mind, or lack thereof.

At the time many spoken words and written words were
 as
incomprehensible as hearing or reading Russian
 backwards-- or forwards.
But I picked up the plastic capsule with my left
 hand and looked at it
 intensely, wondering what it was.

Then after nearly a month of recovery, I was able to
 look at it more
closely, and with some degree of comprehension.

Then, and only then, with a degree of comprehension
 back, did I realize
that the little container had... you guessed it
 Bessey Specks Two,
nearly microscopic specks of SAY AL HYMIE 90. The
 specks had migrated
to the edge of the container to the point that they
 would easily be missed.

Had it been opened by me or anyone else, they would
 have become nothing
more than dust on the hospital floor (as if there is
 much dust there
 anyway in intensive care).

 Well...

I still have those two tiny Bessey Specks and the
 card that he sent me
on my meteorite shelf, along with dozens of really
 large in comparison
 meteorites.

But those two specks have a treasured spot in my
 heart and on my
display shelf. They are a memento of the time when
 I could have been
numbered among the departed. And oddly they are part
 of the process
that came about to bring my comprehension back.

I hate the idea of reducing meteorites to Bessey
 Specks... but these
 two tiny ones... I like.

So... One needs not muli-billion dollar equipment to
 appreciate them...

Just a weird state of mind caused by a disease that
 shuts down the
brain. And as it reboots, then the appreciation
 begins.

[meteorite-list] RE: Self-Proclaimed Pairing Issues

2006-05-07 Thread Thomas Webb
List Members,
There are a few people who seemingly are able to get
meteorites classified in a matter of weeks. I have
been waiting for almost a year now and don't even have
a number much less a classification. Is this due to
the volume supplied by some and the consequent revenue
to the institution or what is the reason for the
inequity?
I would appreciate some answers to the list on this
matter.
Thank you,

Good Morning List Members,
Thanks to all who took time to enter the contest as
well as those who made comments from the sidelines. I
hope those who entered thought it was fun, and even if
it was easy with google, that they learned a little
something. One notable person who responded commented
that he has a copy of the poem on his office door!
There were respondents from several countries and most
of the questions were answered correctly by most
respondents. The first person to answer all of the
questions correctly was Johnny (Last name not given).
I am awaiting his mailing instructions for the Wagon
Mound partslice. The answers are:

1. What is the name of the poem? THE METEORITE
2. Name the author of the poem. C. S. Lewis or Clive
Staples Lewis. (His nickname was Jack.)
3. Which of this author's books uses this poem as an
introduction? MIRACLES (It's in his book of Poems
but not as an introcuction.)
4. Name two other books this author wrote. (I will
list only a few of the many possible choices.) The
Pilgrim's Regress; The Screwtape Letters; Perelandra;
The Great Divorce; Out of the Silent Planet; The
Problem of Pain; A Grief Observed; Mere Christianity;
The Four Loves; The Abolition of Man; Prince Caspian;
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; The Silver Chair; The
Horse and His Boy; The Magicians Nephew and The Last
Battle. (These last six are the others in the
Chronicles of Narnia series.)
5. What current movie was based on this author's
writings?
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The
Wardrobe.

Thanks again for participating.

My best,
Thomas

Hello Robert, Goran, Michael, Sergey and all others:

The two spheres would hit the ground at the same time
only if air resistance or another resistance (large
bird maybe)doesn't interfere with the spheres. The
law stands true if the two spheres are released at
exactly the same time and in a space devoid of air (a
vacuum). If this were the case they would reach
terra firma at the same instant. However, this is not
the case--so--you never know is the only appropriate
answer for the question as postulated.

And that's WAY out of left feild! Some of our days
of the week are named after Norse gods. Anyway,
you forgot Ymir, which would be a good name for
 the largest KBO

Personally, I'm of the opinion that NO KBOs should
 be called planets, including Pluto.

Hey List, I just wanted to wish all the dads a
  happy fathers day!
  I heard a funny fathers day thing today;

All dads want for fathers day is some time
 alone
  with your mom,
so get the heck out of the house and let daddy
 have
  the kind of
fun he had with mommy before you came along and
  ruined everything!

Tom, the way you put it - I know my Dad would want
me to be the one left IN
THE HOUSE, and that He would take His ballerina to
  do the things they enjoyed
most, while humming the Barcarolle or another
  favorite under clear skys with
his handsome telescope with that eerie purple
  sheen, perfectly aligned on
  star-drive with time to kill...

  * *  ** *  ** *  *

   * *  *
Doug, get your *ss over here kiddo!!, You're not
  gonna believe this!!

Nearly thirty-three years ago, and I remember it
  better than this morning...

A BOLIDE!!! He actually got a BOLIDE! We were
  just there in the Tetons,
and this photographer catches a fantastic fireball
  in his exposure! What a
  lucky b*stard!

Dad is possessed, shouting excitedly returning
 from
  the mailbox, madly
waving the latest issue of Sky Tel like it was
 HIS
  winning lottery ticket!

Is everything OK Walt? Mom doesn't seem to be
 too
  concerned knowing Dad...

Doug, look at this fireball! It'll knock you off
  your chair! When will I
see a bolide? After all those nights we go into
 the
  mosquito infested
swamps to photograph meteors! And this fellow
 gets
  it right over the Grand
  Tetons!

But Dad, that doesn't look like a fireball -
 Isn't
  it daytime?, I was a
little perplexed since the photo looked like a
 nice
  day besides the smoking
streak which destroyed the tranquility of the
 scene.

Doug, this isn't a regular fireball like some of
  the small ones we've
seen. (I still hadn't ever seen what I considered
 a
  fireball, which already had a
mystic significance around the household, but I
 was
  ashamed to admit that,
and had seen many meteors during our trips to the
  dark).

Yeah, Dad it doesn't look like any of the
 fireballs
  I ever saw...

Doug, this is what's called a bolide. Bolides
 are
  fireballs that can be so
big that they're sometimes brighter than a full
Moon, and you can see them
when the Sun is shining. They leave trains of
 smoke
  and if you are lucky
you'll see them exploding as they rumble by.

  A Bowloid? what?...

Bolide Doug, get it straight - I'd give my right
  arm to photograph just one
bolide in my life. Doug, you haven't lived until
  you see a BOLIDE. We'll
keep watching - we'll see one, don't worry! Oh,
 if
I could only have one of
these bolides rip through the sky with my
  camera...

  B-o-l-i-d-e...

Dad continued to devour his ST and contageously
 was
  heard mumbling the word
bolide all evening. I was a little confused
  because I knew I was just a
kid, but I thought I had been living long enough.
Still, I had never seen a
BOLIDE, which now took the principal seat in the
 Mt.
  Olympus in my mind's eye.
I was very excited because I now thought we would
  see a bolide sometime
soon...even though I had yet to completely digest
the fact that a meteor which I
always associated with dark nights, could be seen
  blowing-up enroute during
  the day.

Shortly thereafter, we left yet another time for a
  trip to the dark
swampland 70 odd-miles away. I did my job
 carrying
  one tripod for Dad's equipment,
and then we arrived at a place he fancied, and Dad
  began his meticulous setup
of the ungainly big camera mounted on his eerily
  glistening purple telescope,
which had to be the world's best as far as I could

  imagine. I was curious
as much as impressed that when Dad magically
  manipulated his equipment, this
would cancel out the star trails that all the
 other
  cameras he also set up
would record. I faithfully did the rest of my
chores - mainly to keep out of
the way and to be handy with the mosquito
  repellent, and watch...and watch
keeping a vigilent eye for heavenly visitors.
  Another night and 15-20 faint
streaks later the excitment was even greater.
 But
  no BOLIDES yet...

It's wonderful that Dad left a place of our very
 own
  to meet whenever we
want, in the skies. And you can count on me Dad,
I'll be there with you. Maybe
tomorrow, we'll finally get to live
