Re: [meteorite-list] Are we prepared for an asteroid headed straight to Earth?
Yes of course we are, there are enough hunters now to pick up several tons of material. Never been to a fall that big, might be fun, hope it is a remote location, otherwise meteorites will get a bad name. Re: [meteorite-list] Cutting An Iron
Hi John the difference is that at the University they are interested in science from meteorites, they have likely seen a Campo before. We are dealers, hunters and scientists and some of us have seen thousands of Campo's, or even 10 of thousands. Do your self a favor and type in Campo meteorite on e bay and have a look for your self. They are cleaned using a very specific process and it give these irons a very unique look which your iron has been given. I am going to also say that the university will likely have a different attitude, when you speak with them on Tuesday, they are interested in real science, not wild goose chases On Fri, Jul 1, 2016 at 6:33 PM, John Pierce via Meteorite-list < meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com> wrote: > Hello All, > > > > This is my first post here. [meteorite-list] Postal insurance claim or stamps.com.
I am wondering if anyone can share their experience involving the loss of an insured package. Whether it was successful or not and with any of the carriers. I am especially interested in stamps.com or the Us postal service. I am asking the question because I ship a lot of meteorites and have lost some but never any that were insured. Today I talked with a representative of stamps.com and I was told they only insure the value that I paid for the meteorite or its value at the time of loss whichever is less. -- Mike Miller Kingman Az 86409 www.meteoritefinder.com EBay ID flattoprocks http://www.ebay.com/sch/flattoprocks/m.html?item=330705933783viewitem=sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT_trksid=p4340.l2562 IMCA #2232 __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] Unusual inclusion in Muonionalusta slice
Now I see the evidence, I have the other slices on Ebay and I can see the meteorite acted like a scoop and then in the slice where it appears to be a round inclusion, that is where I took notice of it. You can see the photos here 230692562951, 330632442737,23069255 these are Ebay items for sale so sorry if this looks like a sales gimmick. [meteorite-list] Looking for information in written form.
Hello everyone I am looking for detailed descriptions of things like how is the widmanstatten pattern formed. Perhaps a short 5 or 6 paragraph version and then a full page version for those more interested. I would like to have the same type of thing for inclusions and their composition and distribution. Then one on the differences between stone, pallasites and irons of course there are a few more versions in their like mesosiderite. I also need a good one for Alamo Breccia. Then the same thing for a list of different meteorites, a detailed description, including type when found where and all the basic details. But with some of the history and legend included. Perhaps interesting details like who is finding them and how, how large the modern strewn field might be any information that would help us understand these types of meteorites. The story behind them, this is a preliminary list and is likely not complete. Seymchan both pallasite and siderite, Brenham same thing a separate page for the siderite and pallasite, Toluca, Muonionalusta, Morasko, Canyon Diablo, NWA xxx stones (common types) Franconia, Admire, Gebil Kamil, Sikhote Alin, CD GRaphite, Silicated Campo, Campo, Nantan, NWA 869, Uruacu , Dronino, Chinga, Desert glass, Moldivite, Tektite Slashform Indochinite. This list might become a little longer over time , but this is a good start. I am looking for this information to use on my website and Ebay as well as printed material to hand out, so it needs to be legal to use the info like this. Also I am looking for entry level versions of all these explanations, not looking for detailed versions that require a PHD to understand, hopefully many buying their fist meteorite will be reading these and others who have a few but never really heard the story before. -- Mike Miller 3835 E Nicole Ave Kingman Az 86409 www.meteoritefinder.com __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Ebay store is open -sale-ad Back from Tucson new material and old priced to sell!
Hello everyone I have been getting my Ebay store re opened after several weeks in Tucson. I had a really good time talking to lots of new meteorite people, saw many new collectors out for their first or second meteorite. I saw some of the seasoned collectors but missed many of you that I thought would be in Tucson. I have loaded about 80 pieces on Ebay at this point, some new stuff...Jewelry, Gibeon full slices, Seymchan small full slices, nice crusted NWA XXX stones, small Gebel Kamil pieces, Sikhote pendants. Then I have lowered some of my normal great pieces to a level to move them out and make room for the new material I will be adding in the weeks to come. So have a look and you might find something new you have been looking for or a great buy on something else. Hello everyone it has arrived! The package arrived today without the signature confirmation or the postage intact. The only sticker still hanging on was the customers address and he was forced to pay the postage in order to have the package. I wonder how a package got half way across the country unless at some point it had the postage sticker on it. Well anyway it has a happy ending. Thanks to all for your stories and help. We had to wait for QVC to process through the bins full of returns, but they found the package and returned it to the post office, who got a second chance to deliver, in which they were successful. I asked to see the supervisor, she told me I would have to wait a couple of weeks (consistant aren't they). I told her that I had and had waited three weeks prior to that so it had been over five weeks and it still showed being at the hub. This got her attention and I believe she made some phone calls. Mysteriously the package started to move a day or two later and the package finally was received. I had used insurance so they were a bit more worried about it. Insurance costs about $1 per hundred last I looked. I would bet with the holiday traffic, it has been sitting behind other packages and hasn't been looked at. If you put in a formal lost in the mail then wait a bit longer you can then get them to start making phone calls. Of course it could always be stolen. Best not to advertise what you have in the box. Just say rock sample. I wish you good luck and hope that things work out well for you. If not you have to chalk it up as a lost and let your business absorb it. Very nice site great job! I've still got a lot of inventory to load, but please have a look. My inventory is composed primarily of meteorite jewelry. All of the jewelry is made by my family...my mother, my wife, and myself. The glass work has by far been the most difficult due to the different cooling speeds of glass vs. nickel-iron meteorites...oftentimes causing the glass to break or crack. We've been perfecting our techniques and developing a new line of encapsulated meteorites. These aren't the type that have a plastic pop-top that allows you to insert material...I mean we hand-craft a sealed glass capsule with a meteorite inside and fashioned it into a pendant. Most at the moment are small campos and Sikhote-Alin's...I do have one Tatahouine that's not on the site yet. Our jewelry inventory includes pendants, earrings, sets, bookmarks, keychains, martian jewelry, and tie-tacs. Also available on the site in authentic (non-jewelry) form is Daule, Fukang, Campo del Cielo,Uruacu, DaG 476, Karoonda, Buzzard Coulee (w/copy of papers), Tatahouine, Suizhou, NWA 1929, Chergach, and more! I also carry a line of supplies including Riker boxes and Silica Gel Desiccant packs. Those who inquired about the extra small rikers, just to let you know, I will be having them made in the very near future and will announce to the list when they are available. Of course I will offer a 10% discount off of all web prices upon checkout--use coupon code metlist for your 10% discount off your subtotal. Hi All I have actually seen hundreds of Franconia irons and have actually walked far more than .well farther than was needed to get my head in the right place. What I see in the picture is a perfect circular line that once went all the way around. What I see is not formed in nature it is made by man, no only by man but by one of his machines. The wave you are referring to was formed through original wear to the item in question. The wear caused the failure of the fastener and allowed you to find it years later. I don't believe it was formed in a train wreck either. Finding someone who has time to do a conclusive test is very unlikely so all you will be left with in the end is a piece of metal your opinion and ours. The bottom line is Larry posted a picture we voiced our opinion on it. No big deal. On Sat, May 8, 2010 at 1:53 PM, thetop...@aol.com wrote: Hello list, This will be short for now, my computer is in the shop. First, I'm havin fun! Second, I thought it may be a little controversial though it may be a bit more so than I thought. Next I'll say that the object is smaller than might be apparent. I'll show more pictures later. I can say it is smaller than any grommet I've seen. I'll also say that I thought it was a shoe lace eye when I first saw it, it is however too small. It has a rollover lip that curls like a wave nearly all the way around and the hole in the center is blown outward, not very apparent in the image. With all due respect to Sterling and the other nay sayers, let me point out a scenario that you are not considering. I have several, and have seen many others with holes punched into, and sometimes nearly through the little iron. I have a perfect example of this I will show when I get my computer back and can post pics. This phenomenon has been observed in SIkhote Alin as well. Perhaps not a complete penetration but big splashes nonetheless. This has happened in Franconia where the irons are tiny and whatever it is that makes these splash forms was able to pass all the way through an already flight oriented meteorite. Sure, it may not be a meteorite, that is understood by me, I'll have it tested if I can. I never said the links were from Larry, the Franconia meteorwrong guy. They're from some other meteorwrong guy. But I guess I can see how you infered that. I was trying to illustrate the point that something found in a known strewn field doth not a meteorite maketh. Phil Whitmer -- Those ebay links you provided were not listed by Larry, the guy who owns the Franconia iron, which I believe could very well be an iron meteorite, but not 100% sure. I have some Franonia irons with odd shapes as well, The roll over lip make me think it could very well be authentic. Also the the raised portion leading up to the hole in the center does not appear to be of even size all the way around, which it would be if it were a button. I think also the size make it a slim chance it is a button. Also the metal around the hole is not uniform and is more flattened and rolled over one one side. Dont think it is a wrong, but like I said I cant be sure, but Larry is a very knowledgeable guy who knows his meteorites, if he says it is a meteorite after having it for a few years and examining it in person, I will take his word for it until proved wrong. If I had to pay cash for it, I may then think about having it examined further. But A great collection piece either way. Wow Bill plenty to go around! That is great news how many did you find while you were there? How many were you able to purchase while you were there? Hi Brian I don't think I have ever been involved in an argument on this list and I wont start one here either. I am just pointing out the standard edict that we as a group of meteorite hunters have worked out over the past few years. When I say we I mean Steve Arnold of the meteorite men along with myself and most every other hunter and dealer on this list. Steve had something to say about this very same situation when another list member from Chicago mentioned a price while we were still in West Texas hunting. If I remember correctly Steve Arnold of the meteorite men, was very upset when he was the one out in the field and someone else was causing the same problem he is now saying he must do. So, instead of trying to guess at the supply and demand issues concerned here, I figured I would let the free market decide for me. My hunch is that these will sell up around $100/g but who knows for sure. Very little has made it to market, and very little may ever make it to market. Then again, a 500 pound main mass might be found and these could get a lot cheaper later...providing the large mass would make it to market. Hi Mike and List, I think I speak for many others on the List when I say that your specimens and preparation are top notch. I have spent the last two days slicing and polishing some stony chondrites, and it's been a lot of work - it's been fun, and I wouldn't trade it for anything else, but it's still a lot of work. It's a labor of love. When I think about how much work goes into cutting, polishing, and preparing irons, it makes me wince because I know how labor intensive irons are. And not only the labor, but the wear and tear on saw blades, diamond wheels, etchant, and the other expenses. Frankly, I don't fool with irons because of the high learning curve and consumption of materials. I don't see how some of you guys who specialize in irons can make any profit. Keep up the good work. Those knives look awesome. [meteorite-list] Collectors wanted in humid areas/// first come first served
Hi all I have 4 specially coated Brenham pallasite slices. I am looking for collectors in very high humidity areas who normally might stay away from pallasites because of their climate. I already have one headed to Malaysia and would like to have some in other hi humidity areas. The only condition is that once a month or so for the next year or so you send me a quick email to let me know if the piece has shown any rust. These are small slices 10 to 16 grams and will be given to collectors in high humidity areas who are willing to send me that email once a month. -- Mike Miller 230 Greenway Dr. Kingman Az 86401 www.meteoritefinder.com 928-753-6825 __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Hi all I have been working on trying to take pictures of the Admire pallasite slices that reflect the true colors and I think I have finally done it! These pictures actually look like the slices. Each different type of lighting gave different reflection from the crystals, but this is what they actually look like when you hold them. Re: [meteorite-list] Dealers, Sellers: Please INSURE your shipments
Hi Gary sorry to hear about this loss. I will be interested to hear some of the non US dealers and sellers answer here. I know when I buy from other countries I use either Pay pal or a major credit card. I did one time have a problem with a decent sized Muonionalusta never arriving. So I reported this to the Credit card company and with little or no work they gave me the money back. The same is true of Pay pal if a shipment would arrive in part they have a process to go through designed to protect the buyer. I have never used the Pay pal buyer protection, but my customers have a couple times and it simply means the buyer gets their money back. EBay is the same way, if the buyer does not get the item they will get their money back. Seems like there is a pattern starting to develop here. Now this seller is not necessarily bound by these other companies but it is in their best interest to make sure the customer is satisfied with the out come of this transaction. A seller is only as good as his or her reputation and in our small community new travels very fast. Also many times when I ship fairly expensive items outside the US insurance is not even an option. The limits are small and I don't remember the numbers but they are no where near $1600. On Mon, Jun 1, 2009 at 3:59 PM, Gary Fujihara fuj...@mac.com wrote: Aloha, I have been the victim of theft after discovering that over $1600 worth of meteorites were missing from a shipment I received from Argentina. I had noticed the package felt light, but discovered that the US postal service is not responsible for thefts of the contents of international mailed items that are not insured. This shipment was not insured and so I will in all likelihood take the full brunt of this loss. Thievery by customs officials, foreign and domestic postal workers and other individuals or organized groups inside and outside the US is a possibility! I believe most packages arrive at their destinations with their contents intact, but feel it is negligent and at the very least unconscionable not to insure shipments at or above the full value of the contents. I know it costs more to do so, but please consider insurance especially for foreign shipments. Mailing specimen cards and paperwork separately from the meteorites can also prevent thieves from knowing what those Mineral Samples are. Is it fair for me, the buyer to take the loss alone for this theft? I personally don't think so, unless I was given a choice and elected not to insure. I would hope that the seller (an IMCA member who, to his credit is working with me) would have a sudden rush of conscience and compensate, or share the loss with me, since his act of omission provides me with little if any recourse. What are my rights, and what can I do? Do other dealers insure their shipments? What is SOP? [meteorite-list] Seeking some of this lists knowledge
Hello everyone inspired by the great experience I had in West Texas, I am spending a considerable amount of my time chasing fire balls these days. As you know we seemed to have a large number of fire balls in a short time. One question I am pondering at the moment is how a sonic boom relates to these events. We have several different recent events and the sonic booms in these events are different in the way they direct us to look for the meteorites, I hope they produced. First we have the ...well I guess I better leave that state out of this public address. A well know recent event with many reports of a huge boom that shook houses and rattled windows. These booms woke many people from a sound sleep. My question here is why would the boom be so loud and violent? Is it due to the size or speed of the object entering our atmosphere? Then we have another recent event with three separate distinct booms. Softer and not as violent but we have three of the them boom, boom, boom. Does this mean there are three separate objects? We also have a very recent event in the Flagstaff area with reports of a sonic boom, now in this case witnesses say that the meteor was headed for earth at a very steep angle,(perhaps 80 degrees) I am wondering what affect this has on a sonic boom. Such a steep angle of decent does that produce a smaller area where the boom can be heard? Then a general question is the point in the atmosphere where the sonic boom is created a specific altitude or does it vary by size shape and speed? Does the fragmentation event or bolide event produce a sonic boom or just the meteor entering our atmosphere. I know there are a lot of questions in there and some of them I think I know what the answers are but I have learned in my years that sometimes you only think you know until someone who really knows starts talking. -- Mike Miller 230 Greenway Dr. Kingman Az 86401 www.meteoritefinder.com 928-753-6825 __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
