[meteorite-list] 1996-2016 meteorite collectors / dealers
Hello All, I came into meteorites from an astronomical background. I started collecting meteorites, moldavites, tektites, and impactites in the early 1980s. First purchase was a moldavite, then followed an Australasian tektite, and soon after a small, etched Mundrabilla slice. I soon had a hunch I would be hooked for the rest of my life: a Canyon Diablo followed, then an Odessa, an Allende CV3 and Nuevo Mercurio. And, quite logical, lots of books dealing with meteorites to learn more about the subject of my addiction. Among these books the 3rd, 4th, and 5th editions of the Meteorite Catalogue, Buchwalds voluminous Iron Meteorite trilogy, Sears, Wasson, Burke, etc. Long before the Meteoritical Bulletin Database was accessible online, I had created an extensive electronic database of all meteorites (Antarctic and non-Antarctic) and of all impact structures then known. In 1987 I became a member of the Meteoritical Society, and also got subscribed to the Antarctic Meteorite Newsletter. By 1999 I had started collecting meteorite thin sections, quite a few of my first thin sections came from Al Mitterling among them Allende, Estacado, Hassayampa, Haxtun, etc. There are now 221 thin sections in my collection. Meanwhile my interest has shifted heavily toward moldavites. Last December I owned 29 moldavites, but this number has now grown to 140 of these bottle-green glasses from various localities in Bohemia, Moravia, and Lusatia. A very special honor was bestowed upon me in 2013, when a minor planet of the carbonaceous Hilda family was named after me: (247553) Berndpauli = 2002 RV234 Best regards, Bernd __ Visit our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/meteoritecentral and the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com https://pairlist3.pair.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

I think I started actively collecting around '97 or '98, but I'm not entirely sure anymore. I started to really become passionately interested in the science in around 2001. At one time, I basically read the entire met list archive for want of other literature. Killgore, Haag, Anne Black and a few others patiently helped me get started. I started selling around the same time, and stopped selling, for most intents and purposes, a few years later. I completely stopped participating in the list or larger meteorite community for more than 10 years because I got disgusted by infighting and animosity. I only started again when Derek asked me to help edit the magazine a few years ago. Today, as for most of the preceding years, I just study and collect, though there are a tiny number of meteorites in my shop because I like occasionally getting to have a conversation about them. These days, I mostly use meteorites for education and outreach, and concentrate my studies on craters. __ Visit our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/meteoritecentral and the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com https://pairlist3.pair.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] 1996-2016 meteorite collectors / dealers
For me it all started in 1998 when I saw a small ad for meteorites in the back pages of Astronomy. A pregnant wife, and new internet service was the key. I first bought from a Calgary coin dealer 1 small slice of Gibeon and a 383g Toluca individual. These got me hooked like I couldn't see coming! In 1999 I started hand making metal labels for my specimens, which has grown to nice side hobby selling to collectors world wide. These days the collection is thinning out a bit, but will always dominate my home and work offices. Love my alien rocks! Cheers. Re: [meteorite-list] 1996-2016 meteorite collectors / dealers
Hello List, For me it was back in 1989. I owned an art gallery in Tucson at the time so, I would go into Bob Haag's room at the Desert Inn during the Tucson Gem Show to buy meteorites. That was a sight to behold. Bob had the entire room blacked out like in outer space with directional lighting focused on the meteorites. Bob was a master at marketing. I became close friends with Gina Haag, Bob's first ex-wife and ended up selling her entire collection after they divorced. I also sold Bob's sister Terry's jewelry in my shop at the time. My kids grew up meteorite hunting the Santa Rita's looking for the famous "Tucson Irons". We still hunt there to this day. Bob offered a $Million reward for the exact location of any new find of the Tucson Iron so, we were very motivated to hunt. One day I walked into Bob's room and he handed me a small meteorite explaining that "you are holding a piece of the Moon". Nothing was more thrilling than holding Calcalong Creek (the first Moon rock available to the publi c) in your hand. This couldn't even be done at a museum at the time. I have very fond memories from back in the day. I attend the Tucson show every year and would not miss it for the world. [meteorite-list] 1996-2016 meteorite collectors / dealers
Greetings, Great Topic John!! I technically started my collection in the mid 1960's with a visit to Meteor(ite) Crater. I was hoping to buy an actual iron meteorite. You could only buy shale, so I bought several on a square card that had a purplish/red color with a fireball trail and meteorite shale in the center of the card. However I don't think I can count that as when I started to seriously collect. Later went back to Meteor Crater as an adult and wanted to buy an actual iron meteorite. Still couldn't but bought a larger piece of shale. This was in 1979. After Reading Nininger's book Find a Falling Star in 1985, that inspired me to want to collect meteorites. I bought three specimens from Robert Haag (The Meteorite Man) a iron Canyon Diablo, an Imilac stony iron, and a Allende CV3. Not bad for my first chondrite! I joined a group from England called the Meteorite Filies (spelling) who talked, swapped and had the original journal for amateur collecting. How ever it went defunct due to an accident by it's main member. I still have three or four of the magazines. Back then you had to get your hands on reading material as there wasn't any real internet to communicate on the subject. There was only 6 or 7 new specimens coming out each year and at best 10 or 12 dealers (world wide). There were very few actual collectors. After buying meteorites from one of Ron F. sellers and finding out he was charging 3 times more than I could buy them myself I started into the dealer arena to offer competition. This was in 1988 or about 27 years ago. I originally collected three specimens but after reading about some of the falls in Nininger's Book, collected 13 more specimens. thinking this was all that I would ever need. That was roughly 500 specimens ago (personal collection) and tens of thousands of meteorites bought and sold. During the Compuserve era (early 1990's for me) Joesph Murakami and I started a meteorite list on the AstroForum which we engaged in the discussion of meteorites with other members. Not sure if this counts but I started into the hobby of astronomy when I was very young. At 13 years of age I went to the Strasenburg Planetarium here in Rochester, NY. While I was there I bought a small book called "A Comet Strikes the Earth" by Harvey Ninniger in the gift shop. On that book was a glued a small piece of meteorite from the outside rim of the Barringer crater. I still have that book and the meteorite. I will go out on a limb and say then that I started collecting meteorites in 1973! Yes Paul, There were very few of us when I opened my website sometime in the summer of 1998. And Ebay had maybe a dozen meteorites. I had been working with Alain Carion for at least 10 years before that, got to know Robert Haag, David New,, but that is when I decided to strike out on my own. I too started my meteorite journey in 1996. A few here may remember the late Robert Szep who was a real character and who loved meteorites. I purchased a nice El Hammami slice off him which is still in my collection. I think it was just a few years later when I purchased a nice Allende individual from Mike Farmer as I started in ernest to grow my collection. Wow how the time flies! Re: [meteorite-list] 1996-2016 meteorite collectors / dealers
