[meteorite-list] New meteorite fall in Maine

2023-04-11 Thread Fries, Marc D. (JSC-XI211) via Meteorite-list
Howdy all

There was a noontime bolide over eastern Maine this past Saturday which
produced a meteorite fall. There was only one NEXRAD radar in range of this
event but it appears in four radar sweeps, complete with short-range turbulence
from falling rocks. Details can be found here:

https://ares.jsc.nasa.gov/meteorite-falls/events/waite-me-08-april-2023-1556-utc

My apologies for not sending this email earlier. If anyone wants a
copy of the Google Earth .kmz send me an email at this address.

Cheers,
Marc Fries

Greetings all

Radar, GLM, eyewitness, and other data indicate a voluminous new
meteorite fall outside of McAllen, TX yesterday afternoon. I will post images
and a strewn field map ASAP on the ARES Meteorite Falls web page.
https://ares.jsc.nasa.gov/meteorite-falls/

Some free advice - be on your best behavior around south Texas
ranchers.

Re: [meteorite-list] NEW Meteorite Fall In Phoenix/Glendale Arizona

2018-08-23 Thread Galactic Stone & Ironworks via Meteorite-list
It's been a busy summer so far. We have had five falls since June 01, 2018 :

Jun 01, 2018 - "Jinghong" (unofficial) (L5 chondrite?) : China (Hammer)
Jun 02, 2018 - "Central Kalahari" (unofficial) (unknown type) : Botswana
Jun 21, 2018 - Ozerki (L6 chondrite) : Russia
Jul 27, 2018 - "Glendale" (unofficial) (ordinary chondrite) : Arizona USA
Aug 12-17?, 2018 - "Bhakkar" (unofficial) (ordinary chondrite?) : Pakistan

There were three more before these, for a total of eight. Only two
(Hamburg and Ozerki) have been classified, approved, and published.

Good luck to the hunters!

Comes with this sketchy excerpt:

"It took our brave men to go closer to the object so that we will know what
it was. Initially when the object landed, it was pure white in color. Human
faces were reflecting on the object like mirror. Then it turned pure black.

I wonder if that is the same guy who sent me a dozen pictures this
morning, at least they were not huge pictures. And he wanted to sell a
bunch of Martian meteorites, a white one, a yellow one (8 kilos!), a
red one (38 kilos!).

No I did not buy, it went straight to Spam.

2013-07-30 Thread drtanuki
Martin, Paul, Steve, Anne and List-

Thank you Martin for the kind information.

For the record-  The rock shown in the Chinese newspaper article appears/IS to
be a meteorite, 99.999% !

Second, the lady or girls name 关菊娃 Guān jú wá should not be translated as
baby *girl child  in this case it is her name, not the name of the meteorite.
Google translate has some quirks.

I'll put it on my list of recent falls, but I guess I should hold my
breath for any recoveries. Maybe if some cartel members are reading
this, they will send me a specimen without any severed heads or

Well...nothing in the articles indicates to me that a meteorite was
involved. Apparently no one saw it fall, since it was just after it had
rained.
And if the skies cleared up real quick, no one reported a sighting that I
can tell. The report of two pieces being hot doesn't make sense either. If
meteorites fell, then the reporting pretty much sucks. :O)

[meteorite-list] new meteorite fall

2009-02-19 Thread JoshuaTreeMuseum

Howdy Pekka, List:

Here's what I find disturbing about the photo of DiIulio and Starr holding
the (formerly) pristine meteorite samples: as scientists and directors of
the UNT planetarium and astronomy lab, don't these guys know that you should
not handle a fresh fall with your bare hands. Use forceps like they do in
Antarctica. Even amateurs like myself know this. Also the formerly pecan
size meteorites are now upgraded to walnut size!

Re: [meteorite-list] New meteorite fall Morocco

2009-01-25 Thread Bob Loeffler
Hi Mike,

I agree. The progression of photos shows that the crater was getting
bigger and bigger (it's big enough for the guy to sit in in the last few
photos), so it was definitely widened as the guy was looking for more pieces
of the meteorite. But, even the original pit has a cratered look to it, and
others have told us on this list that a meteorite that small shouldn't cause
a crater, so I have my doubts about this one too. But I'm still a newbie,
so I will leave this one to the experts.

Regards,

Bob

Aid,

These look like nice meteorites and I don't doubt that these are
genuine. I do find it hard to believe that the small craters were
formed from these stones. The craters look dug and appear too large and
deep for the little rocks your are displaying.

Am I missing something?

Great pictures, Aid!
That is a rocky terrain I've never experienced.

Questions: Burned sand? I'd like to see some pictures of that, if possible,
or a detailed verbal description.
Any pictures of impact pits/craters before they were disturbed?

Also, is this the same fall that was described earlier as mostly in
snow-covered mountains?
Is it permanent snow at high altitudes, or thaws in Spring?
Is there an update for the size of the fall area?

Best,
Pete

Sounds fishy to me. It's got some pretty serious heat capacity to
require such cooling time at only 900g.

Also, the site's picture of a meteorite is actually a composite image
of the nucleus of Comet Wild 2, the one from which Stardust captured
particles.

Hi Larry and All,

Cool thing about the image in question is that there are two well
formed footprints on the comet nucleus. Affectionately known as right
foot and left foot, they are easily visible in the higher
resolution picture in the lower left at:

Cheers,

Nothing has been found as far as I know. I heard that two persons spent
a week last summer looking for the meteorite but found nothing and I'm
not surprised.
The area is covered with low shrubs and wetlands and in the summer it is
a mosquito infested hell. You would have to walk right over a stone to
see it, just two meters off and you would miss it.

Btw, the link works just fine in my mail reader.

[meteorite-list] New Meteorite Fall

2003-02-24 Thread Jim Strope
Hi List Members...

Here is a report from one of the other teams that are competing with Adam
and Greg and others on this new fall.

I just got the following email from Mike and Eric who are now in Lesotho
(Matteo, this is in SOUTH AFRICA not NORTHWEST AFRICA).

Take a look at the ordeal they are going through. The recent pricing from
Adam's team seems pretty cheap when you factor in the hardship.

Also, I am NOT part of this expedition so I will NOT be having any of this
material for sale

Jim,. hey, It is hell here, I am so sunburned and had
heatstroke yesterday. We got seperated and me without
water for 6 hours, burning in the sun, I almost died,
I was reduced to guzzling water from a well,,
extremely dangerous but we had to climb up a mountain,
 so hard.
We have some kilos, got some from the people.

I just want to tell everyone that Eric and I are here
in Lesotho, beautiful country. and the people are
among the nicest I have ever met.
Most of the meteorite is gone, very little left being
 found. Many years
salary as a house can be built for only $300.00. The
people were jumping with joy, and i mean litteraly at
the money we gave them, including many gifts of candy
and pens and pencils for the children, shoes, shirts,
knives etc. They were hugging us. It is so poor there, we tried to do
all we could to help them out.
 Nice complete
 stones.
Heat stroke almost got me , I cound'nt sleep due to the
blisters covering my face, ears and neck/I am in
 excruciating pain right now.
