I have my customer base and they get notifications of new stuff privately. I

Hi list

This year, the only PR-6 meteorite website is
the Meteoritical Society. Meteorite Market and MeteorCrater.com were

This tends to prove that Science is taking over Business in meteorite, at

I wouldn't be concerned about moving down a point. PageRank is not really a

Matt Cutts of Google said the following on Twitter on the 16th.

it's not unusual to see PR shift up or down slightly, due to recalibration

PageRank is only a small part of what Google uses to determine rankings in
their search results. I just did a top 10 report for meteorites for sale

2013-12-23 Thread Jim Wooddell

Hi all!

I no longer have any commercial interest in websites, so this Google PR
ranking means absolutely nothing to mebasically could careless.
It would be silly of me, by nature, to think I needed any of this for
any purchase anywhere on the internet. I don't need it and never needed
it for my
businesses. Google Analytics data is good to see how your business
efforts attract interest in a web site but it is so easy to cheat (and
you are only cheating yourself)
it's often worthless information and is not necessarily tied to your
bottom line.

So the only people this helps, with small hobby businesses in mind, are
very few. And, I doubt that these rankings, that the vast majority of
people could careless about, did much of anything to seriously improve a
bottom line in such a business. I suppose if you are a numbers geek,
you could some
how tie your bottom link to various PR rankings, but I serious doubt the
majority of you have done this.I'd guess it is very much a waste of
your time.

In regards to a business, I think Ruben had a great idea with one of the
largest followings, if not the largest

followings of all time. Am I wrong?
The point being that he was out there sharing his adventures and was
actually active in the community, helping people, sharing
his knowledge, etc. I've never been anywhere with him that I did not
see him help someone in regards to meteorites. I will however

agree cameras are like magnets to him! LOL!
I am not much of a buyer but he did what it took to be in my absolute
top rating, regardless of what someone else thinks is a good PR rating.

If you want true PR and you want to grow your business, then do what it
takes and forget about these silly big boy numbers games. Get out there
and be part of a
larger community, because most of you are not known any better than the
up and coming Moroccan dealers that sooner or later will get their PR
act together

and kick your butt!Living in a 'click' will not grow your business.

Just my 2 cents.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

Re: [meteorite-list] 2013 Meteorite Website Pagerank Report

2013-12-23 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi Al and List,

I want to clarify a few things here.

Al, nobody, including me, would ever accuse you of wrong-doing. I
said that a drop to PR-0 is usually the result of a penalty by
Google. I explained this at more length in my original report and
perhaps should have been more clear in this last post. It is a fact
that when a website drops to PR-0, there is a reason for it. Google
may be arbitrary at times, but they do not randomly penalize websites.
In your case Al, your drop to PR-0 is explained by your hiatus from
the web. Taking a website down completely for an extended period of
time can result in a dramatic PR drop. In your case, this must be
what happened. I did not single anybody out and only made a
generalized comment about the most common reasons for a PR penalty.

efforts by others to look like the knights in shiny armor, why else
would they post?

I guess this a reference to me. My motivation in publishing these
numbers and my reports is to help webmasters increase their traffic
and their income. I have been heavily involved with webmastering
since the very first days of the internet and I have seen years of
trends involving traffic and conversions. In fact, SEO (search engine
optimization) is closely related to Page Rank and many businesses pay
hefty sums of money to full-time professionals whose sole job is to do
exactly what I just did - analyzing web traffic trends and increasing
traffic and conversions. Go to LinkedIn and search for SEO services -
it's a real profession in high demand.

Do not shoot the messenger. Everyone on this List knows you (Al) are
an honest man and straight shooter. And anyone who Googles your name
will see that. The same cannot be said for some others and people in
the Meteorite Community know who is who. So, if anyone mistakenly
thought my report was an indictment of your website or character, they
are in error. That was certainly not my intent and I am merely
reporting the numbers and providing some general analysis.

FWIW, Al you are far from alone in seeing your PR drop to zero. Norm
Lehrman, Michael Johnson and Erich Haiderer all experienced the same
reduction in PR and everyone knows they are good people as well.
Google PR is not always a fair representation of a website's
informational value and as Paul Harris pointed out - Google PR is far
from being the only determining factor in search engine performance
for a website. And as Jeff Kuyken pointed out, PR can vary depending
on geographical area. Your PR might be zero from my iteration of
Google, but I have no way of determining what the PR is for versions
of Google in Europe, Asia, or elsewhere.

Whether we like it or not, search engines are a significant source of
traffic and new visitors for any website. People will always feel
confident in buying from a source they are familiar with, regardless
of PR. But, brand new visitors who come across your website in the
results of a search engine query may become your next best friend or
most loyal repeat customer. Some of my best clients have found me via
Google or Facebook - the latter is an entirely different game and
story.

Jim, I agree with the spirit of what you said. But, the internet is a
technology game, whether we like it or not. Ignoring things like
Google PR or conversion rates is not a positive thing - it is like
statistics in sports - they often do not tell the whole story, but
much useful information can be gleaned from them. If a website is not
living up to it's potential, then it is doing it's owner a disservice
and if that owner ignores ways to improve their traffic/conversions,
then they are doing their business a disservice.

For those who do not care about the business side of meteorites or the
technology side of the internet, then ignore reports such as these and
continue doing business in the way that best suits your needs.

Re: [meteorite-list] 2013 Meteorite Website Pagerank Report

2013-12-22 Thread Ruben Garcia
Hi Mike,

Cool stuff for sure.

However, the rankings are only part of the story. For example, my
website Mr-Meteorite.net and MrMeteorite.com (I own both names but
they lead to the same site) only fell because nearly two years ago I
removed all content from my site. As some may recall I had millions of
views on my youtube videos which were attached to my site.
Unfortunately, that was the problem! After all, I can only answer so
many is this a meteorite type emails. Since I've never really sold
meteorites from my site I figured it just wasn't worth it. It just
seemed to take a lot of time with little reward.

Strangely enough. I just re-posted a few of my greatest and most
watched videos back on my website this morning. They'll be available
until I get over run with questions again about meteorite hunting,
etching or I.D.

It'll be interesting to see what next year looks like.

Well, in the three years since my report, meteorite websites have
taken a hit from Google. Apparently, Google does not think much of

obviously has something to do with the change in formula.

I charged money for the last report. I am not going to charge for
this one because this is not a full-blown report like the first.
Also, I do not feel right charging for something that is not going to

valid, Google decided to reduce many sites' PR for no apparent reason,
so much of my advice was in vain. (Although, much of the advice is

Re: [meteorite-list] 2013 Meteorite Website Pagerank Report

2013-12-22 Thread Frank Carroll

Thanks Mike

What a great way to see how Google views your site. I just started building
mine late September and have a ranking of 1. I am using Word Press and
theme I chose is limited to a certain number of pages so I am sitting in
neutral until my computer guy finds me another. I hope to offer a few
things for sale once this is rectified.

Merry Christmas to the list and Happy New Year.

Re: [meteorite-list] 2013 Meteorite Website Pagerank Report

2013-12-22 Thread Paul Harris
I wouldn't be concerned about moving down a point. PageRank is not
really a priority anymore and updates only come once or twice a year.
Matt Cutts of Google said the following on Twitter on the 16th.

it's not unusual to see PR shift up or down slightly, due to
recalibration + it's possible that sites are right on a borderline.

PageRank is only a small part of what Google uses to determine rankings
in their search results. I just did a top 10 report for meteorites for
sale (the results can be seen in the image link below). The second
column from the right shows PageRank and has values from 1 to 5 which do
NOT correlate with the search rankings. This is the way PR has been
behaving for years.
