Re: [meteorite-list] Amgala Status and L7

2004-11-15 Thread Meteoryt.net
The classification of Amgala (Provisional name) is H3.7/H5.

Hi all
What is Shock and Weathering grades ?
I suppose that W is 0 to max 1

And from different fable.
NWA1839 L7 is now officially reclassified as Ungrouped Primitive Achondrite
?
If this is paired to Hupes NWA3133, so what is classification of this
meteorite ?
This is also ungr. achondrite ? Becouse I read something about strange CV7
etc.

 Hi All,

Mike asked the status of Amgala. Amgala (Provisional Working Name) is still
under study at NAU. There are several reasons for the delay. One, NAU has
a huge cue. Two, it is a very complex meteorite. Three, nine months is not
that long to wait when we still have material from over three years ago
still not completed. I will check the status Monday and give updates if
 there are any.

Re: [meteorite-list] Amgala Status

2004-11-12 Thread Michael Farmer
Yes, Amgala looks like Zag, but as a man who has sold about 80 kilos of Zag
and 7 kilos of Amgala, there are subtle differences that anyone can see if
they have seen a few pieces of Zag.
Zag has very thick coarse fusion crust, often bumpy and granular.
Amgala has smooth thinner crust, almost never granular. Zag is much more
uniform, large breccia.
Amgala tends to be very small breccia pieces, more black shock veins.
To the trained eye, they look nothing alike and could not be mistaken for
each other.
I was in Morocco last week, I saw some zag, it is horrible, any zag coming
out of Morocco now is rusted all to heck, and look really bad.
Amgala is still there, still clean and many pieces looking like they never
saw rain (which they didn't).
I would be please to examine any suspected piece of either and make the call
for anyone who thinks they were swindled.
I really don't see any scams happening though, I have looked through ebay
and seen nothing out of the ordinary.

Hi Mike and Listees,

I’ve got exactly the same point of view as Mike. I don’t say that a swindle
didn’t exist or still
exists or anything like that, I don’t know anything about that, but a thing is
sure : Amgala
(provisional name) is really a new fall. It fell 20km away from Oum Dreyga, on
Gour Lafkah
mountains. It exists some rare fragments, picked up just after the fall, which
have not been
weathered by any rain.
The classification (H3.7/H5) is the official result of the MNHNP analysis.

Best Wishes,
Philippe Thomas

a list of the most abused names. I see there have been some
improvements
lately in this area such as web sites have been changed, some are using
  the
term suspected pairing and others are submitting suspected pairings to
laboratories. This is good news and will help improve collector
  confidence.
If every dealer did his/her best to follow the rules set forth by the
NomCom, meteorite collecting could evolve to the next plateau. Here are
a
few examples that could stand some improvement:

  Amgala*
Cleaned Zag being substituted, only one well known dealer still at
fault.

  NWA 1109*
Still being sold as a Howardite - Name borrowed heavily - Self
proclaimed
  pairings

  NWA 1068
  Self proclaimed pairings

  NWA 1110*
  Mass self proclaimed pairings

  NWA 1877*
  Self proclaimed pairings

  NWA 1817*
  Self proclaimed pairings

  NWA 1827
  Self proclaimed pairings

  NWA 1878*
  Self proclaimed pairings

  NWA 1929
  Mass self proclaimed pairings

  NWA 3118*
  Mass self proclaimed pairings

  NWA 3140*
  Mass self proclaimed pairings

  * Studies paid for by The Hupe Collection

As you can see by the number of asterisks we have a large investment in
  the
above listed meteorites. This is why we take exception to anybody using
these numbers that has not made their material official. We spend
  thousands
every month on the study of NWA material and do not depend on grant
money.
This money comes directly out of our pockets. I hope a month from now
  this
list is shorter. I will become more specific if needed in the future.
  Now
lets have some fun doing the right thing.

  All the best,
