Unfortunately, it is the typical mindless and cliche
speculation, often later followed by min-black holes
and superquarks, that gets thrown out when either a
plane or ship mysteriously disappears and there is a
lack of any hard data on which to construct a rational
hypothesis. It is not that CNN is grasping for straws
to explain this utterly heartbreaking disappearance.
Instead CNN is grasping for anything to print in the
absence of anything new and significant to report in
order to keep their audience entertained.

Bolides are being used to explained numerous
reports of loud noises and reports of aircraft crashes
that people are trying to link to the disappearance
of Flight MH370.

Go see Malaysian Airlines MH370 contact lost at
http://www.pprune.org/rumours-news/535538-malaysian-airlines-mh370-contact-lost-249.html#post838

In it, SLFplatine wrote

Quote (Brika):
Not to forget Malaysian police reporting hearwitness
accounts of a loud bang near coast off Kota Bharu.

And along with the oil rig workers eyewitness (600
kilomètre distant we should add here) -a meteorite
would produce the same hear/eye witness accounts.

The most interesting and professional discussion of
this unfolding tragedy, which I have found, is Malaysian

2014-03-12 Thread Matson, Rob D.
Wow -- a meteor? Really?! I can't believe CNN would bother to report
on such nonsense.

That 777 likely crashed in one of the jungles of Malaysia, Vietnam or
Cambodia. If it had gone down over water, they would have spotted
floating debris by now. From a wreckage visibility standpoint, there
is really no worse place it could crash than over land in this part
of the world. It could take a month to find that plane. --Rob

Just heard on CNN that they cannot verify for sure if there is a MELTDOWN in
Japan with the reactors, but that the Government is passing out Iodine
Tablets to everyone within 20 miles of the reactor and that may affect
70,000 people in the area. This is being done as a precaution, but they said
they do NOT know for sure if there is an actual melton at this point.

[meteorite-list] CNN reports Obama to ride in Asteroid-proof Limo; -)

2009-01-07 Thread mexicodoug

Hi Listites and other Amphoterites,

As I scratched my noggin on the why, why, why conspicuous consumption
is still such a positive cornerstone even for those who promise to
renew the ever dwindling planetary resources, these words from CNN were
hilarious (could this government project be the long awaited bailout
stimulus plan for GM?).

H. they say it is a hybrid vehicle (that runs only on
diesel?) If Obama hasn't thought of it yet, I'd quietly order one
up with dual Rutan hybrid rocket engines, divert a bit of the nitrous
oxide into the driver's airspace, and take a spin around the asteroid
belt for what this is costing all those rich taxpayers, but alas, that
naughty former Australian PM has production tied up for the moment:

[On the Obamas' new official limo to premier on Inaguration Day,]
One news agency, noting its 8-inch-thick doors, says the limo can
withstand a direct hit from an asteroid. But GM spokeswoman Joanne K.
Krell laughed off the comments.

In truth, the new presidential limo is a Cadillac, Krell said, although
it is not a direct extension of any single model.
The presidential vehicle is built to precise and special
specifications, undergoes extreme testing and development, and also
incorporates many of the top aspects of Cadillac's 'regular' cars --
such as signature design, hand-cut-and-sewn interiors, etc., Krell
told CNN. Cadillac is honored to serve and renew this great
tradition, she said. And it is entirely appropriate that an American
president has at his service a great American vehicle.

For much of the country's history, the Secret Service didn't even drive
the president, evidently oblivious to the dangers of asteroids.

Wow - unfortunately for most of us, the Secret Service almost had it
right! Furthermore...what fun will it be if the vehicle industry
follows suite and the hammered become the hammers, with just a little
remaining black fusion crust remaining on the vehicle next to a pile of
pulverized meteorite powder.

The complete story and a picture of the engineering gem:
http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/01/06/driving.obama/index.html

Best wishes and Happy New Year,
Doug
(disclaimer-this post is apolitical, virtually all leaders are equally
inclined not to look their lavishes of state and gifts horse in the
mouth. Just happens this workhorse's asteroid proof!)

Two-headed calves? It is the Dog Days, dies caniculares in

Thanks to The Meteorite Times, who just posted
this
Indian newspaper account of Monday's fireball time-
stamped Tuesday, 08-2-06 at 3-something am. Don't
you guys ever sleep... either?
I envision an empty, night-time, but blazing
with lights,
Press Room with one lone editor shouting Copy!
just
like in the movies...
Nah...
OR, Is that 3 am in India? If I place the
dateline correctly,
that's last week here, isn't it?

It must be Meteorite Season: Norway, India,
who's next?
Mississippi rivers in Tucson? Bombers crashing in
back yards?
Two-headed calves? It is the Dog Days, dies
caniculares in
Latin, Sirius rises with the Sun; in the news
business, it's
called the Silly Season.

A good time for meteorites. Let's have another
Park
Forest type fall, only closer to me this time. I
offer up my
own house for a Garza Stone. (I've got insurance
and
I need a new computer.) Bring it on.

 Dear List,
Just came across news report from CNN India/IBN
that five fragments from the Indian fall have been
recovered. I did not get it taped so I do not
have
the names of the fall sites. Best to India!

[meteorite-list] CNN more info

2005-02-12 Thread Michael Farmer
By the way, the photo's they show quickly are Thuathe, all the little black
children are holding pens I gave them.
The second photo is a meteorite that Robert Woolard and his friend found on
this last trip to Oman. It weighed just over 13 kilos and was all busted up
as you can see in the clip. What a great find though.
The meteorite you see me holding up in the desert was my new Lunar, which is
also shown in the room here in Tucson.

[meteorite-list] CNN news story about meteorite/earth ages

2002-08-28 Thread Martin Horejsi

Howdy all,

Here is a news story I thought might be of interest to you.

Cheers,

Martin

Reports: Earth formed faster than estimated

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (AP) -- Scientists have found evidence that Earth made
its final step to planet status about 30 million years earlier than previous
research had suggested.

Working independently, two groups of scientists analyzed meteorites that
contain telltale clues about planetary formation and compared them to rocks
from Earth.
