Hi List,

I would like to congratulate Todd Parker on his new Arizona chondrite
discovery. I had the pleasure of hunting with Todd Parker and Larry Atkins
recently in the Arizona desert. While Larry and I were sitting on a hill
taking a water break with Brix, Larry's phone rang with a very excited Todd
on the other end. We could see him down below us, so we quickly rushed over
to see what he had found. We saw a beautiful chondrite in situ. Todd was
recording his find and preparing to take a photograph when Brix ran up and
gave the meteorite a sniff and a lick.
Todd was the first one to see the meteorite and Brix was the first (and
only) one to lick it! : ) It is a 30-40 gram chondrite with fusion crust
and visible metal flakes on on the broken end. It looks like Lawrence may
have another meteorite to classify from Arizona.
Congratulations Todd!

2010-12-12 Thread Arlene Schlazer
Thank you Anne! And for sure we cannot forget Brix. One must experience
riding next to him and seeing his excitement first hand as we are nearing a
hunting site. He cries with anticipation. As soon as we got out of the
truck the day of my find, he began to dig feverishly. We thought maybe he
was on to something and then he suddenly stopped, looked up with dirt on his
nose, cocked his head with those sad doggy eyes as if to say, sorry, nothing
here..and walked away. He is one amazing dog.

Well, I would like to send my sincere congratulations to Dr. Laurence
Garvie! That is very exciting news. H, smallish stone only
305g..I guess mine is a mere pebble then!!! I'm happy to see the
meteorite bug can strike in any sector of this wonderful hobby..I hope
you will share photos..congratulations again

Great find Arlene!
You had 2 great guides (lets not forget Brix!) but you are still the one
who found the newest Nevada meteorite.

And,
I have the newest Arizonian.
No, I was not in Arizona, and I really don't hunt, but this one was
actually found by Dr. Laurence Garvie from ASU. So yes, of course, it has
alredy

been classified, and it is an L6, and it will soon show up on the Met.
Database under the name of Chandler. Very nice crusted smallish stone,
only 305g.

Thank you Laurence.

And, Guys, if the scientists are now doing their own hunting, you have
some

very heavy competition!! ;-)

Hello Arlene,

Well..when I said smallish I meant smallish by Laurence's

Maybe we could show those new stones together in my room in Tucson, yours,
Laurence's and also Ruben's new mesosiderite.

And, Guys, if the scientists are now doing their own hunting, you have
 some
 very heavy competition!! ;-)

[meteorite-list] Congratulations to all the finders of the Wisconsin Meteorite

2010-04-25 Thread Brian Cox
Congratulations to everyone that has found a Wisconsin Meteorite and those
that have helped in the promotion of Meteorites as a hobby and have helped
to spread good will and a positive attitude of kindness amongst all of us.

I wish all of those there in Wisconsin now to have patience and to find a
meteorite and to all of those that are planning to go soon to find at least
one.

Also, have a sense of humor and don't let mean spirited, angry, vindictive,
resentful, jealous, bitter, envious, crazy, energy vampires get you down and
take away your sunlight! ;-)

All the best wishes to you and much peace love and harmony.

There are many in this world that don't love themselves and find it
impossible to show love to others.

http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/04/08/science-channels-2010-11-upfront-slate-stirs-audiences-imaginations/47750

Returning to the network is celebrated author and theoretical physicist Dr.
Michio Kaku in an all-new season of SCI FI SCIENCE: PHYSICS OF THE IMPOSSIBLE.
The METEORITE MEN, Steven Arnold and Geoff Notkin, return for a new season of
searching for invaluable records of the universe, and it’s all about rockets
and backyard innovation in Science Channel’s coverage of the annual L.D.R.S.
competition.

METEORITE MEN
This thrilling series brings viewers closer to space than ever before. Geoff
Notkin and Steve Arnold share a passion for adventure, traveling to wild
places, and hunting for extraterrestrial visitors from outer space that have
found a way to Earth.  With three 4WD trucks, ATVs, state-of-the-art metal
detectors and an array of other hunting gadgets, the Meteorite Men cover
hundreds of acres of ground. No area goes uncharted as they search in plowed
fields, dense forests, rolling hillsides, abandoned farms, and unmarked dirt
roads in the hunt for valuable and mysterious rocks from space.

Matteo - Let me assure you that there is no bias as to whether US or
European classifiers get some sort of preference on when meteorites get
classified. We have had over 80 classifications ignored for long periods of

the ineptness of those responsible (many have been replaced) and finally
those 80 are being attended to.

Be patient, things will get be better.

In my earlier message about ineptness in reference to the classification
system, I should have pointed out that not all involved have had inept
moments. I compliment Caroline Smith and Gretchen Benedix of the NHM on the
fine job that they have done in handling the thousands of classifications.
They are messengers and should not be shot.

And what makes you think I took 6 kilos of Argentina
meteorite? Are you as uneducated as the Argentines? I
put on my website 6 KG TOTAL ESTIMATED WEIGHT.
Do you understand that. Do you have proof I took one
gram of meteorites from Argentina? What you read in
newspapers is often very untrue.

Congratulations are in order for M-Listee, Rob Matson.

Rob's the finder of a CK4 meteorite, Lucerne Valley

http://xrl.us/LV28CK4

Rob knows that my congratulations is not solely for
finding a CK, but is more for finally being successful
in getting it into the Meteoritical Bulletin.
I daresay that he took more effort in getting it
properly published than in finding all the numerous
fragments. And I'm not exaggerating when I say that
getting a Pairings Group approved is just as rare as
finding an American CK4.

Kudos, as well, to all the others that took the time

Would like to publicly congratulate one of our younger
List members, Jason Utas, for his new California
meteorite, this state's first Acapulcoite, Superior
Valley 014.

There is a preliminary write-up for his find here:

http://tinyurl.com/74glt

And it just so happens that, back in 2002, I took an
image of this find:

http://www.geocities.com/bolidechaser/drylakes/suv012-8.jpg

This image was taken in the field from the hatch-back
end of the Utas SUV shortly after Jason and his
father, Peter Utas, made these finds at Superior
Valley (in 2002). Even at that time, Jason was
pointing out that this small (1.77g) stony was
different looking. I agreed with him on that, and
suggested that he and his father take it to UCLA and
let Alan Rubin examine it.

In anticipation of them doing this, I offered to help
them get provisional numbers from the NomCom for all
of these finds. And as an aid in getting this done, I
suggested that before I take the image, they should
line up all of their finds in the order that they were
found. A minor point, but what resulted is this image
with all their finds side-by-side, and in both
numerical and chronological order. It sort of
explains why we request provisional numbers, even for
these small meteorites. It just seems prudent. And
when one of them ends up being an Acapulcoite, it
gives ample justification.

It was serendipity that we crossed paths in the Mojave
Desert on that weekend in September 2002. And the
Utas were very obliging to let me image their recent
finds. So I am very appreciative to them for having
given me the opportunity to record, what is now 3
years later, a not-so-minor event in California
meteorite-recovery.

Jason, along with his dad, have gone on to find many
more California meteorites. And Peter deserves some
credit for getting his son involved in
meteorite-recovery at such an early age. Jason and
Peter should be proud of their accomplishments.

[meteorite-list] Congratulations to Jeff Pringle

2005-10-14 Thread Robert Verish
Many of you have already congratulated List member,
Jeff Pringle, for his recovery of a Nevada meteorite
find, but my congratulations are for his recent
success at getting that find cataloged in the latest
Meteoritical Bulletin:

http://tin.er.usgs.gov/meteor/metbull.php?code=32765

Now that his formerly provisional-numbered find is
finally approved and listed, I can now revise my old
Nevada Meteorite Picture of the Day web page - which
shows some good close-up views of this stone taken by
Jeff himself:

http://meteorite-recovery.tripod.com/nvmetpod/04-10-31.htm

There are other meteorites that were found by List
members that are listed in this latest version of
MetBull 90, but it doesn't list who the finder is.
I don't want to take a guess and then end up offending
the true finder. But it's no guess when I tell you
that the finder of Lucerne Valley 050 is none other
than our own Rob Matson.

(No surprise, but Rob has already made a start on the
next 50 Lucerne Dry Lake meteorites by making a find
last month;-)

With best regards,
Bob V.

[meteorite-list] Congratulations !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2005-02-02 Thread Robert Woolard
Hello Mike and List,

I'm home from work now and would like to add my
congratulations to Mike. When he called me today at
work to inform me of the Lunar confirmation, I was
elated! I felt like jumping and singing and dancing
like a madman. (OK, so I DID do a little jig when no
one was around.) And, I could finally uncross my
aching fingers. ;-) I couldn't send out an email
from my work place either, so he asked Bernd to
announce the good news.

I'm SOO happy to be able to say that I was there
to see that sucker laying on the ground, just waiting
to be picked up! And, it was found on my son's
birthday, Jan. 18th. I called him from Oman that day
using Mike's satellite phone and told him we probably
found a moon rock on his birthday (wonder how many
people have had the joy of being able to say THAT to
their son??). Jan. 18th has TWO reasons for being a
VERY special day for me now, instead of just one. :-)

Joel Schiff and I have been in touch with each
other. There will most likely be an article about our
trip in Meteorite magazine soon (hopefully the next
issue if there is time.)

Congratulations again, Mike!!! I'm still in shock.

  Robert

Hello Bruno and Carine,

I know you are at the Tucson Show but I wanted to
congratulate you for discovering the second
Chassignite meteorite ever. I found the information on
your website.

That's an incredible discovery, one of the rarest
class of meteorites.

I hope you'll tell us in which conditions you did this
find.

Happy Tucson Show to everyone,

Dear List and Adam, Thank you Adam so very much for classifying my stones!
(They aren't really mine, I'm only curating them while I'm on this wonderful
planet!) I'm not using your numbers(anymore), I only borrowed them until I
could get my own, kind of what you did with my 1836! Heck, that's what
friends are for!! Your best friend(probably very true), Nels

[meteorite-list] Congratulations Adam!

2004-11-12 Thread Nelson
Dear List and Adam, I see nothing in the abstract that says I am incorrect.
I stated that I paid to have the said meteorites classified and that at the
time of their classifying I had the main masses. We all know that this can
and does usually change. Congrats on your piece of 1817, although I'm not
clear on how you don't require your own classification number. As for 1827,
all others are pairings so that is correct. As far as the abstract goes it
says nothing at all about 1836, which you incorrectly called 1838. Actually,
I only announced that I paid for these, because in one of your posts you
(falsely)stated you paid for over a dozen of mine. I still don't know how
that could happen, since all the over 50 I've paid to classify I got
directly billed and paid. Curious, could it be you might have erred? At any
rate I appreciate your vehement efforts to keep us all on track. You're
quite a guy! Thanks Nels

2004-11-12 Thread Adam Hupe
Nelson,

Everything I stated is accurate except calling NWA 1836, NWA 1838, a simple
mistake which I gladly own up to. We turned over the lab results of
meteorites we studied for Habibi when you acquired the stones and we were
not compensated for doing so. I would say this is classifying your stones
for free. Anyway, Why are you using the NWA 1877 and NWA 1110 designations
on your web site?

All the best,

Adam

[meteorite-list] Congratulations to Bob Verish!

2004-10-05 Thread Ron Baalke

Minor Planet Circular 52771 issued on September 28, 2004
announced the naming of Asteroid 84225 after my friend,
Bob Verish. Robert Matson discovered the asteroid from
NEAT images. Excerpt from the MPC is appended below.

If you would like the view the asteroid's orbit, see this link:

The story about the discovery of the Los Angeles
meteorite is here:

From MPC 52771:

(84225) Verish = 2002 RO236

Disocoverd 2002 Sept. 12 by R. Matson on NEAT images taken at Palomar.

Geologist Robert S. Verish (b. 1947), an engineering contractor for the
Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is an experienced meteor observer and
meteorite-recovery expert. He has found over 100 meteorites in California,
Nevada and Arizona, including the Los Angeles shergottite - the
fourteenth recognized meteorite from Mars.

[meteorite-list] Congratulations on having an asteroid named after you!

2004-03-05 Thread dfpens
Rob Matson:

Congratulations on the honor of having an asteroid named after you.

The Minor Planet Center today updated its Discovery Circumstances pages with 93 new
namings. The highest numbered asteroid with a name is now 73491 Robmatson (2002
PO164), a Main Belter discovered by Sebastian Hoenig in the NEAT/Palomar archive. Rob
Matson is also an archive sleuth (see 2004 DW news) as well as a meteorite and SOHO
comet hunter.

Regards,

Dave

 Hi List and Rob,

I did get permission from our own list member Rob Matson to post this email
 he send to me.
I thought it to be very interesting and would like to share it with you.

 Happy hunting, Moni

that reminds me, have you found one lately?

Yep -- nearly every day. But all of the finds credited to me (so far)
have been Main Belt asteroids. The most interesting and rewarding
work was my precovery of asteroid 2004 DW last month. You may have
read about this giant icy TNO (trans-Neptunian object) in the news,
as it is probably the largest body that has been found in the solar
system other than the planets and their moons. You can read about
 it here:

 http://www.hohmanntransfer.com/mn/0402/21.htm

In other asteroid news, as asteroid was officially named after me
 today! See page 2 here:
