Thank you Anne! And for sure we cannot forget Brix. One must experience riding next to him and seeing his excitement first hand as we are nearing a hunting site. He cries with anticipation. As soon as we got out of the truck the day of my find, he began to dig feverishly. We thought maybe he was on to something and then he suddenly stopped, looked up with dirt on his nose, cocked his head with those sad doggy eyes as if to say, sorry, nothing here..and walked away. Matteo - Let me assure you that there is no bias as to whether US or European classifiers get some sort of preference on when meteorites get classified. We have had over 80 classifications ignored for long periods of time, some as long as 3 years. Recently, I have expressed my displeasure for the ineptness of those responsible (many have been replaced) and finally those 80 are being attended to. Be patient, things will get be better. In my earlier message about ineptness in reference to the classification system, I should have pointed out that not all involved have had inept moments. I compliment Caroline Smith and Gretchen Benedix of the NHM on the fine job that they have done in handling the thousands of classifications. They are messengers and should not be shot. [meteorite-list] Congratulations Rob Matson
Congratulations are in order for M-Listee, Rob Matson. Rob's the finder of a CK4 meteorite, Lucerne Valley 028 and it is now formally published in Met Bull #90: http://xrl.us/LV28CK4 Rob knows that my congratulations is not solely for finding a CK, but is more for finally being successful in getting it into the Meteoritical Bulletin. I daresay that he took more effort in getting it properly published than in finding all the numerous fragments. And I'm not exaggerating when I say that getting a Pairings Group approved is just as rare as finding an American CK4. Kudos, as well, to all the others that took the time and effort to get their finds submitted and published. Even at that time, Jason was pointing out that this small (1.77g) stony was different looking. I agreed with him on that, and suggested that he and his father take it to UCLA and let Alan Rubin examine it. In anticipation of them doing this, I offered to help them get provisional numbers from the NomCom for all of these finds. And as an aid in getting this done, I suggested that before I take the image, they should line up all of their finds in the order that they were found. A minor point, but what resulted is this image with all their finds side-by-side, and in both numerical and chronological order. It sort of explains why we request provisional numbers, even for these small meteorites. It just seems prudent. And when one of them ends up being an Acapulcoite, it gives ample justification. It was serendipity that we crossed paths in the Mojave Desert on that weekend in September 2002. And the Utas were very obliging to let me image their recent finds. So I am very appreciative to them for having given me the opportunity to record, what is now 3 years later, a not-so-minor event in California meteorite-recovery. Many of you have already congratulated List member, Jeff Pringle, for his recovery of a Nevada meteorite find, but my congratulations are for his recent success at getting that find cataloged in the latest Meteoritical Bulletin: http://tin.er.usgs.gov/meteor/metbull.php?code=32765 Now that his formerly provisional-numbered find is finally approved and listed, I can now revise my old Nevada Meteorite Picture of the Day web page - which shows some good close-up views of this stone taken by Jeff himself: http://meteorite-recovery.tripod.com/nvmetpod/04-10-31.htm There are other meteorites that were found by List members that are listed in this latest version of MetBull 90, but it doesn't list who the finder is. I don't want to take a guess and then end up offending the true finder. But it's no guess when I tell you that the finder of Lucerne Valley 050 is none other than our own Rob Matson. Hello Mike and List, I'm home from work now and would like to add my congratulations to Mike. When he called me today at work to inform me of the Lunar confirmation, I was elated! I felt like jumping and singing and dancing like a madman. (OK, so I DID do a little jig when no one was around.) And, I could finally uncross my aching fingers. ;-) I couldn't send out an email from my work place either, so he asked Bernd to announce the good news. I'm SOO happy to be able to say that I was there to see that sucker laying on the ground, just waiting to be picked up! And, it was found on my son's birthday, Jan. 18th. I called him from Oman that day using Mike's satellite phone and told him we probably found a moon rock on his birthday (wonder how many people have had the joy of being able to say THAT to their son??). Jan. 18th has TWO reasons for being a VERY special day for me now, instead of just one. :-) Joel Schiff and I have been in touch with each other. There will most likely be an article about our trip in Meteorite magazine soon (hopefully the next issue if there is time.) Congratulations again, Mike!!! I'm still in shock. Robert __ Do you Yahoo!? Dear List and Adam, I see nothing in the abstract that says I am incorrect. I stated that I paid to have the said meteorites classified and that at the time of their classifying I had the main masses. We all know that this can and does usually change. Congrats on your piece of 1817, although I'm not clear on how you don't require your own classification number. As for 1827, all others are pairings so that is correct. As far as the abstract goes it says nothing at all about 1836, which you incorrectly called 1838. Actually, I only announced that I paid for these, because in one of your posts you (falsely)stated you paid for over a dozen of mine. I still don't know how that could happen, since all the over 50 I've paid to classify I got directly billed and paid. Curious, could it be you might have erred? At any rate I appreciate your vehement efforts to keep us all on track. You're quite a guy! Re: [meteorite-list] Congratulations Adam!
Nelson, Everything I stated is accurate except calling NWA 1836, NWA 1838, a simple mistake which I gladly own up to. We turned over the lab results of meteorites we studied for Habibi when you acquired the stones and we were not compensated for doing so. I would say this is classifying your stones for free. Anyway, Why are you using the NWA 1877 and NWA 1110 designations on your web site? Rob Matson: Congratulations on the honor of having an asteroid named after you. The Minor Planet Center today updated its Discovery Circumstances pages with 93 new namings. The highest numbered asteroid with a name is now 73491 Robmatson (2002 PO164), a Main Belter discovered by Sebastian Hoenig in the NEAT/Palomar archive. Rob Matson is also an archive sleuth (see 2004 DW news) as well as a meteorite and SOHO comet hunter. Happy hunting, Moni that reminds me, have you found one lately? Yep -- nearly every day. But all of the finds credited to me (so far) have been Main Belt asteroids.
