All,
I noticed Mr. Ray's auctioned ended with the reserve not met.
And he has removed the reserved for a final 5th auction.

The high bid is currently $1.25

I wonder if this object has silicates. I know that
Russ was looking into it, but have heard nothing.

Two small fragments were sent to me, but both were not
slicated material.

[meteorite-list] Crow Eaters - Even your best friends won't tell you... feather breath?

2003-07-20 Thread Robert Verish
Ken and LISTees,

I wholeheartedly agree with you.
I think it would be a very good gesture.

But, you can't say that the entire LIST was wrong
about that meteorite.

I know a number of people that thought it was, at
least, meteorite iron shale. And there were a few who
even thought that it might possibly be just a very
rusty iron (given its high density). But they didn't
want to risk posting their concerns to the List for
fear of being tar'd feathered. And the others,
those who thought it was iron-shale, didn't post to
the List because they thought the whole subject to be
Off-Topic. So I wouldn't chastise them for not
speaking up.

In retrospect, the consensus seems to be that we
dodged the bullet on this one, and that we were
lucky that Mr. Ray was such an affable gentleman...
but what if the NEXT guy if he has more lawyers
than good sense... we may not be so lucky next
time...

This consensus seems to lend some credence to the
rumor going around that Art, our List Owner, has been
going around and asking our more legal savvy List
members questions regarding his risk of exposure to
restraint of trade law suits and other liability
issues. (Will we be faced with more List rules or
disclaimers in the future?)

But, Ken, here is something that IS my pleasure to
pass along. Everyone that mentioned your web page had
HIGH praise for you efforts, and felt that the way you
handled the matter kept a bad situation from getting
uglier! It was felt that your approach seemed to
achieve the desired results.

And again, I agree wholeheartedly.
So, if I can ever be of assistance to you in your
efforts, please don't hesitate to ask.
(Off-List of course;-)
Bob V.

This is the only time the LIST has been wrong about a

interesting features

Hi Marcia and all,

I'll have to join the group at the banquet table (what does one serve with crow, some
kind of kidney bean and Chianti? Opps wrong movie). I will say this, out of all of the
meteorwrongs we have investigated, commented on, persuaded people they didn't have a
meteorite, made people mad because they had a meteorwrong (leaverite), this is the
first time out of dozens, maybe hundreds of auctions that we were mistaken. I don't
think anyone does it out of pleasure or wanting to rain on anyone's parade but rather
to keep those not knowledgeable and those that would buy from them misrepresenting and
buying something that isn't a meteorite. Also keeping the selling of specimens honest
so people will come to our group and buy.

I personally think it might be nice to try to acquire some of this material so Steve
Schoner can take a look at it and try to derive something of science out of it. All my
best or should I say caw caw.

Actually,

This is a meteorite, as Russ's analysis reveals--
albeit a very oxidized one at that. But this is not
just the common iron shale type. If just normal
iron meteorite shale, then it is quite worthless to
collectors. But this one has portions that have quite
a bit of metal, and what appear to be relic
Widmanstatten patterns.

(Like the Coldwater, Kansas iron which was completely
oxidized yet still displayed Widmanstatten patterns,
which would not place it in the category of mere iron
shale-- A highly layered form with no apparent
Widmanstattern pattern)

I am very intrigued by the numerous specks of metal
shown throughout some of Ray's material. This is
inconsistent with the norm for meteorite oxides that
I have seen from Canyon Diablo.

Further investigation is needed to resolve the
question as to the presence of silicates, for the cut
surfaces do look very much like the cut Winona
specimens that I saw at the Museum of Northern
Arizona.

If so, then this piece is not the normal iron
meteorite oxide found at Meteor Crater-- but something
much more valuable scientifically, and monetarily.

A specimen to tie in the Winona to Canyon Diablo ?
What a wonderful thing that would be...

A find that would inadvertently bolster one of my
project aims in the MCE aborted Meteor Crater project
that could have been.

Have we, as a community, made sufficient peace with the dealer, so that
we don't end up after this with a dealer vs. collectors weariness? Maybe
an email should go to him, explaining that it was all done for the good
of collecting, and that no harm was meant, and that his future endeavors
in meteorites are encouraged?

Yes, absolutely...

We have learned something here... Pictures are NOT
worth a thousand words. Even a well known meteorite
can look pretty strange over the internet.

But what progress from this incident may be, I think
that we are on the same page with regards to
certificates of authenticity.

We should use this case in setting guidlines as to how
our certs should and should not be used. And also the
format should be examined and a standard set.

I certainly wish Dan, Lunar Ray the best, and the
sale of his iron meteorite shale which it appears to
be, goes well. There might, however, be a test to
determine whether this sample is a silicate inclusion
like the Winona Meteorite. Out of this, that would be
a tremendous find.

Steve Schoner/AMS

BTW:

Crow doesn't taste so bad washed down with Canadian
whiskey.
