[meteorite-list] Florida boy
Hello all, Last November (circa the 27th, I believe), a father in Florida claimed his young son was hit on the head by a meteorite and got 3 stitches as a result. Does anyone know if whatever struck the boy was actually a meteorite ? I tend to be extremely skeptical about these types of stories (such as Gerrit Blank who claimed he was hit on the arm in 2009 and it turned out to be a hoax). Nope, not a meteorite. Wishful thinking at best, a scam at worst. Re: [meteorite-list] Florida boy
It was not a meteorite. One of the members in my club, Hal Povenmire, actually went down and interviewed that and was able to get some material. He sent in a few small fragments for testing and it was determined to be terrestrial. It was either a hoax, or even a possible something that got stuck in and dropped off an airplane wheel after takeoff (they are near an airport...) We bounced several theories back and forth about it. Regardless, Hal was convinced that they were genuine in their belief, so we're giving them the benefit of the doubt that it was an odd event, and not a deliberate hoax. [meteorite-list] Florida Boy Allegedly Hit By Meteorite - Any new News?
Hello Kelly and Listers Kelly Read what you had said about the boy getting hit in the head by a meteorite and I was wondering, has there been any more test done on the so called pebbles to put this story to rest that someone is telling a big lie. I have heard of boy who cried wolf, but wouldn't have thought of boy who cried the sky is falling. Any whos, if you have any new info or if anyone else does be great. More importantly, I want to be the first to name this type of fall. It is to be called a hammerhead fall! it is sad that the media runs with this crap these days, a real meteorite fall hardly raises an eyebrow. Battle Mountain was completely ignored by the media despite our best efforts. I guess kids and scratches are much more interesting. Little Stevie is definitively telling fibs and making his father look stupid. My guess is that Stevie was doing something he wasn't supposed to be doing and injured himself. He learned by example that he could lie his way out of most situations by making up a big stories. The better the story, the more believers. Instead of being punished for telling untruths, Stevie has learned early in life that he could attract all kinds of attention with his fanciful stories. I would have got my butt whipped if I told such nonsense growing up. Steven Lippard, of Loxahatchee, was hit with what looked like small pebbles. The fragments were taken to Florida Atlantic University where researchers determined they met all the criteria that make up meteorites. Scientists are now doing further chemical testing to confirm that they are meteorites. Despite having three staples put in his head to close his wound, Lippard is expected to be OK and not have any permanent injuries from the space rocks. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteorite-list-archives.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
