[meteorite-list] meteorite rings manufactoring

2011-02-15 Thread André Moutinho
Hello all, I want to manufacture a meteorite ring from an iron meteorite. I
have found that
Gibeon is prefered because of its stability. I have etched some slices of it
and noticed that it also suffers from rusting.
Does the meteorite ring found on the market have a special coating for
protection?

Thanks

Thanks for the advising, pictures, and links sent. Is nice to see that other
people share the same idea. But how about mixing gold with meteorite dust
(converting the same martian example into dust)? Also how much will be
enough to make it noticeable on this way?

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Rings

2010-08-16 Thread Mark Ford
Hi Jose,

If it's any help, for my other half a few years ago, I had a crescent
moon pendant made of out 18k Gold, complete with texture and craters on
the surface, one of which has a piece of DAG 400 (Lunar meteorite) set
into it, there was also a diamond in a separate crater on the tip of the
crescent (which gives a glint like the sun appearing behind the moon).

Looks really good, and she is very pleased with it. We have had no
problems with the DAG 400, they set it in the 'crater' on the pendant
both with jewellery adhesive and by burring over the gold (to make a
mechanical hold too).

You should have no trouble if the rock is well set into the gold, but I
would advise them to make sure it is held in physically rather than just
relying on adhesive/glue.

Martian Shergottites should easily be robust enough, as long as it is
not too big..

Best Regards,
Mark

keep it dry don't clean it in an ultrasonic bath..

One thing also to bear in mind with Iron meteorites, is as they contain

all.

Hi,

I would recommend against using a soft stone in a wedding ring. Over
time the meteorite will most likely become scratched or chipped. For
occasional wear (or short marriage) go for the meteorite ring.

Hi,

I used to wear a solid Gibeon ring. I had no allergic reaction but the skin
near the ring turned brown. When it came time for me to get a wedding ring I
got Gibeon lined with gold. I have had no problems with it. However the
etched surface has been obliterated, I guess that I am rough on my jewelry.

Thanks,

of meteoritic iron and asked me if I would be interested in such a ring for
my wedding band. She had never seen them before and I of course hadn't even
considered bringing the idea up, but since she thinks its a great idea for
my ring, who am I to object?

My concern is the possibility of my developing a nickel allergy. AFAIK, I'm
not allergic to the metal, but she certainly is.

My preference would be to have my ring made of a solid billet of the Iron
used, but of course one that has in inlay of the Iron might be a better
choice to limit exposure.

It appears that the most commonly available rings are made using Gibeon &
Seymchan and some use Tambo Quemado. I'm just curious which of these three
have the lowest Nickel content?

Thanks

Although cheaper material, I guess labour costs might be much higher for a

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite rings - Nickel Content

2010-04-11 Thread Rob Lenssen

Richard,

I fully agree with Jan here.

This is what John made for me about five years ago, with a small Esquel part
slice I delivered:

The interactive design proces was a great and fun experience.

All the best,

Richard,

Look here for rings with meteorites.
http://www.jewelrydesignsformen.com/meta.html

This guy is a true artist. We got our wedding rings from him, handmade by
order. The nickel/meteorite will never touch your skin since they are
mostly on top of the rings.

Have fun viewing.

My fiance' recently (and with no encouragement by me) came across rings
made of meteoritic iron and asked me if I would be interested in such a
ring for my wedding band. She had never seen them before and I of course
hadn't even considered bringing the idea up, but since she thinks its a
great idea for my ring, who am I to object?

My concern is the possibility of my developing a nickel allergy. AFAIK,
I'm not allergic to the metal, but she certainly is.

My preference would be to have my ring made of a solid billet of the Iron
used, but of course one that has in inlay of the Iron might be a better
choice to limit exposure.

It appears that the most commonly available rings are made using Gibeon &
Seymchan and some use Tambo Quemado. I'm just curious which of these
three have the lowest Nickel content?

Thanks

[meteorite-list] Meteorite rings - Nickel Content

2010-04-11 Thread bernd . pauli
Hi Richard and List,

Gibeon = 7.68% Ni, 1.97 ppm. Ga, 0.111 ppm. Ge, 2.4 ppm. Ir

Seymchan = 9.47 % Ni, 9.15 % Ni, 24.6 ppm. Ga, 68.3 ppm. Ge, 0.55 ppm. Ir

Tambo Quemado = 8.70 % Ni, 10.2 % Ni*, 17.9 ppm. Ga, 31.5 ppm. Ge, 0.039 ppm. Ir

* two different values indicates: two different analyses

All my best to you
and to your fiancé,

Bernd
