Re: [meteorite-list] New BLM rules on col. meteorites
Hi Folks, This has nothing to do with who is in the White House. The White House does not make up BLM rules, the BLM does. Regardless of which candidate wins in November, it will not impact the policies of the BLM. I'm sure Mitt Romney and Barack Obama have plenty of more important things on their plate - Middle East violence spiraling out of control, US embassies under siege, the economy in shambles, unemployment, healthcare, the war in Afghanistan, and a host of other things. I think the new BLM rule is unnecessary and stupid, but the White House has nothing to do with it. It's not on their radar at all. Both sides (Repubs and Dems) are for big government. Don't forget, it was a Repub who gave us the Patriot Act and expanded bureaucracy by creating the DHS (which is a total waste of money). Both sides are guilty. If you want real change, reject both major parties and support a third-party. Neither of the major parties have the interests of the people in mind. As long as a Repub or a Dem sits in the White House, nothing will change for the better. Re: [meteorite-list] New BLM rules on col. meteorites
Perhaps we can keep politics off the list? Per list rules... I have been in trouble for violating it years ago, so perhaps we can all play by the rules. [meteorite-list] New BLM rules on col. meteorites
During the Denver Show at the Merchandise Mart, a lady from the BLM booth stopped by my Meteorhall booth, and while looking over my meteorites for sale (none of the meteorites were from BLM land, land that belongs to all citizens of the USA, by the way) mentioned that new regulations for collecting meteorites had been issued by the Assistant Director, Renewable Resources and Planning of the BLM on Sept. 10, 2012. Look up Instruction Memorandum No. 2012-182, or contact Lucia Kuizon, National Paleontologist at (202) 912-7253 or lkui...@blm.gov for a copy and information on the new rules. Here is a little taste of the new rules: Can a mining claim be located for meteorites? Answer, NO. Meteorites can be collected, limited to certain public lands, up to a whopping 10 pounds per year per person, with only surface collecting. Specimens that are casually collected (what the heck does that mean? anyone that risks their life by searching for meteorites in the desert, spending hundreds of dollars and many days is not casually collecting are they?) are for personal use only, and may not be bartered or sold for commercial purposes. However, you can get a PERMIT for commercial use and sale, unless otherwise prohibited by other laws, regulations, land use plans or closures.
