Re: [meteorite-list] New Park Forest House Smasher
Hi Bill, I'm sure you'll do just fine when you meet to inspect the meteorite. You've had enough experience with it since it fell in 2003 and I'm sure you have specimens of Park Forest. Take them with you if you're suspicious to compare them to this new specimen, but, I really and honestly want you to take at least 2 people with you if you go over to their house or meet them someplace. Also, only meet them in a place with plenty of people around and not some dark area or out in the boonies along a road or something. It not only could be a hoax with a rock from a local gravel pit or quarry, but it may be a set up and they may intend to rob you since they'll think that you're bringing tens of thousands of dollars along. Just be careful and if it's real, then either do a Cashier's check and have them meet you at the bank where there are security cameras or do Paypal and make sure you have it in hand before you send the money though. Take it easy and I wish you the best of luck. [meteorite-list] New Park Forest House Smasher
Hello Carl, Bill, and List, "it would be worth less per gram the larger the size though" I beg to differ ... at least in this specific case! Just try to find any Park Forest meteorites for sale right now (of course, I don't know if there are any private or anonymous sellers) from our well-known, reliable sources, it's nearly impossible to find any offered online. The "unreported" new house smasher is a different affair. It has a weird smell to it. Such a hefty specimen would probably have made it into the media a long time ago already. But: a typical Park Forest individual will probably have certain tell-tale characteristics that "Park Forest Experts" like Steve Witt, John Sinclair, Paul Sipiera, Steve Arnold, Geoff Notkin et al. will readily recognize! Around "2 or 3 pounds" sounds like that could be the 1006 gr Kolkebeck specimen (?) which landed in the rain gutter (See: Meteorite, Aug 2003,Vol. 9, No.3, pp. 08-14). Re: [meteorite-list] New Park Forest House Smasher
Bill, According to a post by Martin back in April 24, 2010 under subject; Wisconsin fireball Meteorite fall. it is $15.00- $25.00 per gram with 40 people selling it . today probably less. No data given for a 2-3 pounder. It is my understanding that it would be worth less per gram the larger the size though. Supposedly Tatauine is the only exception to that rule. I know. Not much help. Re: [meteorite-list] New Park Forest House Smasher
I highly doubt this would show up so much later. Would have to be well documented and park forest very easy to recognize. I also doubt they would have kept quiet with all the media hubbub after the fall. This one stinks to me. Hello Bill, My advice would be to question this 8-year old party 'crasher' to the hilt. With all of the news coverage at the time quoting 'thousands' of dollars being made by locals, don't you think this house would have been known about at the time?! There was a show recently that was broadcast last year also about 'Accidental Fortunes" or something like that. It included the story of the Park Forest fall and people making up to $500,000.00 (combined quote) from the fall in their neighborhood. I smell an opportunist at work here!!
