Re: [meteorite-list] Nickel test kit
Hola Mike and List The problem with the organic complex of dimethyl glyoxine is its low viability (around 1 to 2 month) in alcoholic solution, depending of the temperature ambient. Once it is dissolved (this white dust) in alcohol beginning the degradation. but the dust of dimetyl glyoxine is very stable in the time, I have a flask 3 year working very well. and every time that I need a test I meke the alcoholic solution only for the day. I'm getting very frustrated with the nickel test kit I bought on ebay to test my rusty iron meteorwrong. I do not get reproducible and or consistent results. For example filings from a nickel (5 cent coin) have come back negative. Even the Gibeon which gave a positive test Saturday gives a negative result today. Any users of this test who can give me practical advise? Is it a waste of money? Is there a better one out there? [meteorite-list] Nickel test kit
Hi Mike, The standard nickel test (based on dimethyl glyoxime) can produce false positives and false negatives because it is very sensitive to the cleanliness of the containers in which it is carried out. I haven't experimented any with the kits I've seen listed on eBay from time to time, so I can't give you any feedback on their reliability. But I ~can~ tell you that when I performed the full- blown test in a beaker back in my university days, the results were very sensitive to how well the glassware had been cleaned. Because of that experience 20-odd years ago, I have avoided nickel testing with candidate iron meteorites. It's much simpler to just polish a surface and etch it with ferric chloride. --Rob __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Hello All, Nickels do not contain Nickel any more. They stopped that many a year ago.. Re: [meteorite-list] Nickel test kit
Hello Again, The test kits seem to get old. I tested a lot of meteorites with the ebay test kits with good results, but a few months later, they did not work. So you have to test all 500 tests worth in a short time. : Thanks, Tom Peregrineflier The proudest member of the IMCA 6168 - Original Message - From: Matson, Robert [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, September 22, 2003 9:01 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] Nickel test kit Hi Mike, The standard nickel test (based on dimethyl glyoxime) can produce false positives and false negatives because it is very sensitive to the cleanliness of the containers in which it is carried out.
