Re: [meteorite-list] Odd meteorite.

2009-03-28 Thread Rob Lenssen

Hi Eric and List,

The pictures of the odd ones made me think of a little oriented stone I
bought last year:
http://home.planet.nl/~rlenssen/43g_NWA.html

Like you, I find it too nice to cut, but have been wondering ever since what
it might be...
I have been thinking LL or achondrite. It has a light achondrite-like
matrix, and the typical cracked fusion crust, but also has a

few rather large (upto 2-3mm) blobs of (magnetic) metal popping out of the
crust.
I know HED's, for example polymict Eucrite, also can have free metal, but
this one just looks different.

Regards,
Rob Lenssen

Phil, Hmmm Yeah, but I'm still not so sure. It is close.

The gray-green or blue crackly crust is very similar but there's not many
high resolution photos of the Sahara 03500 crust. I have an oriented piece
that I think might be of the same material on my site. Problem is it's
oriented so I would have to sand a window or CUT it to see the interior
which I'm not ready to do just yet... h

I've added photos of the oriented piece on the odd meteorite page.

[meteorite-list] Odd meteorite

2007-04-05 Thread Darren Garrison
Just finished re-sanding this odd-looking NWA. A 178 gram half-stone with
highly weathered exterior but filled with clean metal. Seems to be a breccia
with angular fragments and possible melt pockets. Could the white areas be
terrestrial weathering?

Hey Darren,
Some of those white areas are located in the middle of the slice.
Those on the edge would be susciptable to terrestrial weathering but unless
the middle had been exposed to the same conditions you'll maybe have to look
for another cause.
