You know, with all the campos and beer flying around Tucson during Feburary, there is a chance that someone lost a campo off the roof of their car or something like that. Dear Martin: Thanks for that. I thought it a good idea to put this info out there for you all to consider. In all honesty, I wondered the same kind of thing. I told the lady it looked like a Campo, and was it possible that they'd picked up something at the Gem Show and got it confused with one of their own finds (trying to be diplomatic). And then I considered the possibility that a hunter could have taken a Campo out to calibrate her/his detector and forgotten it, or lost it (wouldn't be a very good hunter). Was it our friend Rob Matson who found a perfectly polished stone meteorite slice on one of his dry lake bed hunts? Now that's weird. Personally, I prefer your explanation : ) Regards, Geoff N. www.aerolite.org __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Dear Mark and List: I'm not familiar with Cloud's Jamboree, but would like to be. Do you know the dates for that show, or is there a website? If so, please forward, I'd like to check it out. Does this show take place in Laughlin? Its too late I'd think to change from Tucson to Laughlin for the upcoming show, but for 2007, I'd like to see some serious thought put towards the move of the meteorite show. The Gem show has been running in Tucson for 51 years. It's a huge moneymaker for the promoters and the city, and it's not going to move to another town just so visitors can maybe get cheaper hotel rooms, though having paid some hefty hotel bills here in the past, I do sympathize with you. rant Rooms in Tucson are cheap now -- you can get a nice suite next to the pool for $49/night. As you know, they go up drastically during the show due to the greed of hotel owners and promoters who squeeze every penny they can out of visiting dealers and buyers. Even a single at the crummy Super 8 on Frontage Road costs $89/night + a high occupancy tax during the show -- if you're lucky. There has been a lot of unofficial grumbling about the show from certain dealers, and they have every right to grumble, especially this past year (Feb. 2005) when so many were moved to new locations, mistreated by promoters, and forced to set up in useless hotels with no walk-in traffic, miles away from the main show. In addition, vendors are harassed by state officials over the use of non-regulated digital scales and sales tax issues. The Gem show is the biggest event of the year for us here in Tucson. Every hotel room in town is booked, and every decent restaurant is packed night after night. IMO the city should be very grateful for this gigantic income and do more to help visiting vendors, instead of hassling them. Also, it would be nice if JUST ONCE they suspended road work downtown for those two weeks. Another peeve of mine is the gang of urchins who charge $5 to park on some patch of waste ground next to the highway which is vacant for the rest of the year. The show promoters are making enough money -- they need to provide adequate free parking and better shuttle bus service. /rant A few suggestions for show visitors looking to save money: - Buddy up with two or three of your pals, and get a big suite in a nicer hotel. It ends up being cheaper per person, plus you can throw some monster parties. - Stay at one of the motels on the outskirts of town -- off the highway (I-10). There are a number to choose from and they are a little cheaper (Motel 6 in South Tucson, which we used to call Motel Hell, In-Town Suites on Ina, etc.). - Camp outside the city and drive in each day. - Find a motel in a neighboring town, like Benson, and commute to the show each morning by car. You have to really like driving for this to work. - Stay at one of the cheap dodgy Bates Motel motels on Miracle Mile or North Oracle. Steve Arnold IMB and I had to do that one time and we got a room with no bed sheets for $50 cash. I have friends who stay every year at the No-Tel Motel on N. Oracle and they always *do* have some stories to tell. - Crash on Blaine Reed's floor (sorry Blaine, just kidding). - Stay at my house like everybody else -- oops, sorry already full up for next year Or . . . do what I did and just move here. Then the room prices aren't even an issue : ) With many (thousands) of rooms just in the casino hotels, nearby Kingman and Needles also offer hotels and an easy commute, finding a place to stay shouldn't be the problem like at Tucson I can hardly believe there are more hotel rooms in Laughlin than Tucson. Greater Tucson has a population of ~1,000,000; Laughlin ~8,000. Another reason the Tucson show is a lasting success is because people like coming here, especially in the winter. Tucson is a great city with a fascinating history and all kinds entertainment and cultural options. No offense to Laughlin, which is fun for a night out at the casino, but you can't compare it to Tucson. Whatever you do, may I suggest that you book your rooms way in advance. It is always very difficult to get any kind of a room around showtime, and no you can't camp in my yard, sorry. We have wild bobcats and I don't want to have to clean up the mess in the morning : ) Best wishes, and I hope to see you in February. I would suggest we send 500 emails to these people with some well-chosen suggestions, and I also hope they have been reported to the Tucson BBB as well. If it were me, I would make noises to the local CofC suggesting these kinds of businesses be run out of town. If enough people bothered to complain about all the business scams there would be fewer of them. We and everyone else drop enough money at these conventions that the city can at least clean up the town. It would be a good thing for anyone else to let us all know of any other local scammers to avoid. And conversely, any especially good experiences with responsible local vendors. Hi Ron and List, My guess is that I touched some nerves with my last posting to the List about the con artists at Econo Lodge Tucson. I just received numerous responses in a matter of minutes. This incident left a bad taste in our mouths at the show but we were lucky to get a really crappy room in a bad part of town within a few hours only to find out we could have stayed across the street cheaper in a better place. It was not a good start to the show but we managed to have a great time despite these bad people. I spent months writing letters to anybody who would listen about the incident including that corporate office of Econo Lodge who permanently filed my complaint on their record. I sent emails to Triple A. who also said they would look into it. I sent a complaint to Hotels.com who did not do a thing about it. Only after taking legal action with my credit card company did anything happen. It probably took over a hundred hours of phone calls, letter writing and emails to get my money back. I asked the credit card company if they would file a criminal complaint and they said no. These crooks probably know nothing will happen to them from a criminal standpoint and will continue this unsavory practice. Welcome to America where you can get away with grand larceny with no criminal consequences. I was glad to have my money credited back because it was a very frustrating and time consuming process that I could barely spare the time for. I just want make others aware so they don't run into the same problems. I like La Fuente too, but some of our guests were unhappy with the service; others found it too crowded or too expensive, or too slow; some couldn't hear the awards ceremony from the back of the room, etc. Also, La Fuente is now under new management and . . . well, the bottom line really is that after three years in the same venue Steve and I felt that a change was in order. We don't want our meteorite parties to get stuck in an old rut! There is certainly the option for those who would like, to get together early for a dinner at La Fuente, or elsewhere, or to go the AAPS buffet at the Mineral and Fossil Co-op, which is fun and will be good food too. I don't think serving food at the Arizona Plaza during the party is a realistic option, as it would have to be catered (there is no restaurant on the premises) and that would put me in the poor house in no time. Smoked salmon, caviar and Grey Goose vodka martinis for all you wonderful guys?! Yikes! : ) Where, exactly, is this place, anyway? (In reference to one of the better known dealer's location). The hotel we are considering is the old Ramada Inn University, on North Oracle and Drachman, now called the Arizona Plaza. It's the hotel with the palm trees and big lawn where Blaine has set up for many years, along with many of the fossil dealers, and is just across the way from the Executive Inn where Allan Lang and others set up. I did get a few positive replies off-List, regarding this idea. Thanks! I realize this discussion is somewhat OT and I apologize if it bores List members who are not coming to Tucson '05. But then . . . there *is* still plenty of time to get a room at the Arizona Plaza : ) Regards to all, Geoff N. www.notkin.net www.paleozoic.org __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] Re: Tucson Show, Party, Harvey Awards, Venue, etc.
Yes - this is what I meant is there space in the room of the AAPS buffet where the meteorite folks could congregate for a meal. Dear Michael: I expect that would work. George Winters at AAPS who is organizing the event said they were prepared to serve about 150 people. The Mineral and Fossil Co-op is a big space, so there should be plenty of room. Here is all the info: http://www.aaps.net/meetings.htm You can buy dinner tix during the week from the AAPS booth at the InnSuites. If you and some of the guys want to organize to go together and sit together, I'm sure you can manage it with no problem, but I'm going to be too busy with the party and awards to coordinate that, so it's up to you. However, I am planning on going to the AAPS event before the party, myself. Their dinner and auction is a lot of fun, and for worthy causes too (paleontology scholarships, etc.) and then go to the area (still not to clear to me) where the awards will be at say 9PM?? Exactly. The Co-op is at 1635 North Oracle, and literally right next door to the hotel where we're thinking of holding the party. You must have gone to Blaine Reed's room during your many visits to the gem show? Well, it's that same hotel (now called the Arizona Plaza, 1601 North Oracle) where we're hoping to have the party and awards -- either in their lounge bar or their ballroom. Same place where Black Hills Institute, Bill Mason, and many others have set up in the past. I am currently discussing options with the hotel manager. It's a very good idea to have Jim and Paul to post all the info on The Meteorite Exchange Tucson Show page when we get it sorted out. I'll post the info to them and to the List when everything is finalized, but I think we've probably covered this in enough detail for now : ) Thank you all for your input. See you in a few weeks. Re: [meteorite-list] Re: Tucson Show, Party, Harvey Awards, Venue, etc.
Dear Geoff, There are many of us in need of your local-giving personal touch (free of course) for getting our Tucson itineraries together for each day of our trip this winter. Personally, I need a really a cheap flight, a nice rent-a-car and a place to stay for 4 nights(cheap of course), 3-squares a day, a place to hang out every night, some cash (if you have any extra), hand picked awesome meteorites purchased earlier in the week(I'm good for the ones I like and are not too costly), no rain and in the 70's each day, and anything else you can think of that I might deserve. Call me at home when it is all straightened out. Oh...thanks in advance of course. Still your friend, John PS 50-50 I'll actually make it back again this year...but you know I'm worth the gamble. -- Original message from Notkin [EMAIL PROTECTED]: -- Yes - this is what I meant is there space in the room of the AAPS buffet where the meteorite folks could congregate for a meal. [meteorite-list] Re: Tucson 2005 - Meteoritic Dates?
Nick posted: Yes, it seems early to ask, but can someone tell me the prime dates for meteoritical events? I've heard it's February 4 - 5 (Friday - Saturday) . Dear Nick and List: Here's are the details that we have so far. Looking forward to seeing you and the rest of the gang here, in a little over three months. Geoff N. Tucson, AZ * FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2005 [Evening] All are invited to attend the Sixth Annual Meteor Mayhem Birthday Bash Harvey Awards at 8 pm. Location of the event is TBA. After three years at the La Fuente restaurant, we are considering a change of venue for the following reasons: we've outgrown the big room at La Fuente; the nearby Vagabond Inn (formerly the Ramada University and home to Blaine Reed Meteorites) is no longer a show venue; and also because we'd just like to find somewhere a little more interesting and unusual. Details to follow. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2005 [Afternoon] Allan Lang will host an auction of exceptional meteorites from the R.A. Langheinrich Meteorite Collection at the elegant Westward Look Resort on Ina Road, Saturday afternoon at 2:30 pm. An online catalog of specimens will be posted at www.nyrockman.com closer to the event. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2005 [Evening] Michael Blood's ever-popular People's Meteorite Auction will take place at the VFW Hall, Post 4903, 1150 N. Beverly Avenue on the Saturday evening. This is the same location as the 2004 auction. The new hall was a big hit with everyone due to its spacious event room and full cash bar. An online catalog of specimens will be posted at www.michaelbloodmeteorites.com closer to the event. SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2005 [Morning] Darryl Pitt's Macovich Collection meteorite auction will return to the sunny InnSuites lawn after a one year hiatus, on the Sunday morning. An online catalog of specimens will be posted at www.macovich.com closer to the event. SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2005 [Afternoon] Allan Lang and colleagues present a very special free event: You are invited to meet Apollo astronaut, moon walker, and celebrated geologist Dr. Harrison Jack Schmitt when he appears in person at the Westward Look Resort on the Sunday afternoon. Good idea...you can have the macro's. I'll take the micros. The resulting pain would be considerably eased, however, if I could locate and acquire a decent-sized (larger than micro) piece of Trenton (III A), Washington Co., WI. Almost as good would be a Belmont (H6), Grant Co., WI. If any of you in Tucson or Tucson bound either has such a specimen or encounters one while there and would let me know, I would be most grateful. It is hugely enjoyable and of a very professional quality . . . and I'm not just saying that because I'm in it : ) The film contains great segments with some of your favorite meteorite characters; footage of Gold Basin adventures, and more. I had no idea there even WAS a Blake until I met him. They invited me out to dinner along with Worf Martinez and another gentleman whose name escapes me at the moment. I haven't laughed so hard in years (that margarita bigger than my new 19-pound Campo helped a lot). Sadly, I could only stay for the start of the B-day party. Geoff, Please put me down for an invite. I don't know how many events I'll be able to attend, as I'll also be working the show. The weekend of February 7 - 9, 2003 will be action-packed with parties, auctions, and other events. If there are any more List members who would like to join us at the Fourth Annual Notkin/Arnold Meteor Mayhem Birthday Bash you should RSVP to me soon. I'll be mailing out invitations in early January. If you have received an invitation in the past, you will again this time, so no need to reply.
