Re: [meteorite-list] Saw Blades

2010-05-09 Thread al mitt

Hi Dave and all,

That is my question too ( do Dia-Laser or Pro Slicer blades work well on
irons?). When the CBN blades first came out they were much better. I use to
cut multipal slices of irons. Something happened to the way they were making
them and your lucky to get through your first slice on the CBN blades now.
My cutting process hasn't changed. I've cut for a short period before
(minute or so) and checked the CBN blade only to find part of the blade
still has cutting material along the edge while other portions of the blade
are completely smooth. So in my experience the CBN blades are no good.

So what do people use for cutting iron slices?

Do either the Dia-Laser or Pro Slicer blades work well on irons? I have used
the CBN blade on irons and they wear out very fast - too fast to be useful.
I am hesitant about using diamond blades on irons.

Anybody have experience cutting irons?

Re: [meteorite-list] Saw Blades

2010-05-08 Thread bcmeteorites
Hi Al and all,

I have tried many different blades for both meteorite (stone and iron) as well
as lapidary work.

Regarding the CBN blades I talked to the gentleman that developed the CBN
blade a few years ago in Tucson and expressed my displeasure in the CBN blade
basically coming apart during the first cut with the cutting material just
peeling off
the core. What was interesting is that he had sold the blade to a manufacture
to
continue making them and that is about the time everyone started having
problems!!
He thought it had to do with something they had changed in his original bonding
process.
Anyway, I tried a few more and agree that there can be issues using them and the
manufacture has not solved the problem and created the quality of the original
CBN blade.
I have had some ok results if you are cutting stones and small irons, but you
have
to gravity feed with very little pressure. Once the first bit of material
comes off
the edge the blade is basically done. This just seems like to much trouble and
risk for the cost of the blade.

However, after much struggling with cutting irons with a round blade I invested
in a horizontal band saw. This is without a doubt the best (in my opinion)
way to cut irons. The drawback for most would be the size of the saw and
possibly investment cost.
My saw is about 4ft wide x 1-1/2ft deep by 3ft tall and weighs over 300lbs.
The band saw then opens up a whole new discussion of what type of blades
to use, how many teeth per inch, blade speed, feed speed and types of
cutting coolants.

I agree with many that the Pro Slicer is a very good blade for cutting irons
and
stones. These blades can be purchased with a thin kerf to keep cutting loss to
a minimum and they do not tend to bend or warp. Also, in my small (4) saw I
have used a really inexpensive no name import blades and they hold up extremely
well.

The MK303 sintered continuous rim blades will also work very will and produce
some of the smoothest cuts with virtually no saw marks that need to be lapped
out. If you use a thin kerf MK303 and with out much finish lap work needed
this all contributes to reducing cut loss.

I also agree with what Ed said in his post about technique. It seems that
no two stones or irons want to cut the same and you need to adjust to
work with the material and not work against it.

Best Regards to all!

Hi List

I don't often weigh in on subjects, but cutting irons has long been an issue.

The best I've seen cutting any metal, is a bandsaw. And, if money isn't an
object, check out the custom made saws for opal slicing. Might be an answer
in those for quantity cutting with a little modification.

Re: [meteorite-list] Saw Blades

2010-05-07 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi All,

When I first bought my saw, I bought 4 blades to try them out. I
bought an off-brand (no-name) Chinese-made diamond blade, a Lapcraft
Dia-laser diamond blade, Meteorite CBN blade, and a super-thin (.006)
Lapcraft Dia-laser. The Chinese-made generic blade cut great at
first, but did not hold up. The CBN blade held up pretty well, but
the cuts were slow and it seemed to struggle even when cutting softer
chondrites. The Dia-Laser .006 was too thin for my pulley and saw, so
I sold it. The Lapcraft blade cuts smoothly, holds up well, and
doesn't rust. I made several hundred cuts with it before it finally
gave out and I bought a new one. The price is about the same for the
Lapcraft and Pro-Slicer blades.

General question - what is the advantage of the sintered blades?

Best regards and happy cutting!

Re: [meteorite-list] Saw Blades

2010-05-07 Thread mail
With sintered blades the diamonds are actually cooked in with the metallic
alloys of the blade material, thus impregnating the diamonds into the rim of
the blade. This creates a much longer-life and the sintering creates a more
durable and stiffer metallic alloy.

The non-sintered blades (pro-slicer) are made of basically, sheet-metal, and
the diamonds are sprayed onto the rim. Once the diamonds are removed, the
blade is worthless.

Hi List,
Have to agree with Mike, I have used a lot of MK Diamond Saber blades and
they are fine but they cost more than Pro Slicer and do not last as long.
Especially since I cut sometimes dry. Pro Slicer blades do not seem to mind
the occasional dry cut as much as other blades. A good price bargain as
well.

Pro-slicer is dramatically sub-par to MK. At least the new MK products. The one
I use is the MK-303.
http://www.mkdiamond.com/lapidary/bld_303.html. Cost is about 35-40 bucks for
a 6.

Hi List,
Have to agree with Mike, I have used a lot of MK Diamond Saber blades and
they are fine but they cost more than Pro Slicer and do not last as long.
Especially since I cut sometimes dry. Pro Slicer blades do not seem to mind
the occasional dry cut as much as other blades. A good price bargain as
well.

With sintered blades the diamonds are actually cooked in with the
metallic alloys of the blade material, thus impregnating the diamonds into

creates a more durable and stiffer metallic alloy.

The non-sintered blades (pro-slicer) are made of basically, sheet-metal,

the blade is worthless.

I cant agree with You.
I use ONLY this worthless chinse diamond blades from ebay, this for 4-6$/
blade. I make hundreds slices on each, single blade before I need to change
it becouse the rim with diamonds is basicaly

losses completly into 0! I cant imagine to use any Pro-Slicer for 30-40$ :)
I even used only one blade to cut urelites. Ofcourse , each slice take
30-50min to cut, but ... this blade do it. And my cut looses are very low.

I never commented on Chinese blades and do not use them. I am glad they work
for you in some capacity. My comments were directed to Pro-slicer. For a very
similar cost you can have a sintered blade.

 Hi All,

When I first bought my saw, I bought 4 blades to try them
 out.  I
 bought an off-brand (no-name) Chinese-made diamond blade, a
 Lapcraft
Dia-laser diamond blade, Meteorite CBN blade, and a
 super-thin (.006)
Lapcraft Dia-laser.  The Chinese-made generic blade
 cut great at
first, but did not hold up.  The CBN blade held up
 pretty well, but
the cuts were slow and it seemed to struggle even when
 cutting softer
chondrites.  The Dia-Laser .006 was too thin for my
 pulley and saw, so
I sold it.   The Lapcraft blade cuts
 smoothly, holds up well, and
doesn't rust.  I made several hundred cuts with it
 before it finally
gave out and I bought a new one.  The price is about
 the same for the
 Lapcraft and Pro-Slicer blades.

General question - what is the advantage of the sintered
 blades?

 Best regards and happy cutting!

Re: [meteorite-list] Saw Blades

2010-05-07 Thread Ed Deckert

Hi List,

This is my opinion, but I believe it to be correct as it applies to cutting
lapidary rough. Regardless of which brand, and the method of bonding the
diamonds to the blade core (bonded to the blade core by being plated,
sintered, or welded to the core,) one should consider how the blade is being
used before complaining about the short blade life they experience. For
example, dry cutting with a diamond blade that the manufacturer states must
be used with a liquid coolant will typically shorten the useful life of that
blade. The diamonds overheat, crack, and will come off of the blade
prematurely instead of simply wearing down.

If you apply too much pressure when cutting (pushing too hard when feeding
the meteorite manually, or perhaps the autofeed mechanism on the saw is
pushing too fast for the material being cut) - even when using coolant - the
diamonds overheat and come off as when cutting dry, or are simply torn off
by the pressure when feeding the material through the blade too quickly.

And then, different materials will tend to cut faster or slower than others.
How about those blade-killing diamond-bearing Ureillites? When pushing too
hard, or cutting tougher/harder meteorites, two different people using the
same brand and type of blade on the same meteorite can, and will experience
different blade life depending on the material being cut and how quickly
they try to get the job done.

Just my 2 cents.

Ed Deckert

Re: [meteorite-list] Saw Blades

2010-05-07 Thread al mitt

Hi Christan and all,

The CBN meteorite blades (for iron meteorites) worked well in the
beginning but I have tried them off and on over the last few years and
they wear out super quick. My set-up for cutting has remained the same,
same saw and process but I used to get quite a few slices before wearing
out the blade. I have literally worn out a blade in a minute or two due
to the bad bonding of cutting material on the saw. I have even felt the
blade and parts are still sharp where other sections (usually large) are
smooth and worn or fallen off. If you buy some of those types just order
a couple so you don't waste your money.

Not good for stony material as it leaves far too much kerfing. A thin
diamond saw is best. Good luck and hope you find a reliable source for
your cutting. All my best!

[meteorite-list] saw blades

2005-04-01 Thread Tom Knudson
Hello List, I finally got a saw, it is a six inch trim saw that will take a
vice which I hope to get soon. I am shopping for a blade, but I want to do a
lot of practice cuts on rocks, maybe a few NWA meteorites and don't really
want to do this with a top dollar blade. Can anyone suggest a reasonably
priced blade to learn with and where to get it. And, where is the best place
to get a good blade once I feel confident enough to try it? : )
