most interesting thing i ever found was a clutch of dino eggs about the same size as small chicken eggs and a partial human skeleton that dated to be about 20k years old. I notified the local police about the skeleton and they sent the crime lab down and did a recovery. Thats the last i saw of it so i suspect its still in the labs store room. My brother collects fossils so I gave him the eggs. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] Strange things found while hunting for meteorites : )
This wasn't on a meteorite hunt, it was while my husband and I were out playing paintball in an 'unimproved' section of Windward Oahu. Renegade fields are not uncommon, sharing ground with hikers and pig hunters, and the players all parked their cars at the foot of some deeply eroded areas and hiked into the field, maybe a half mile. No one had a 4x4 that day, but obviously people had managed to get Jeeps and other vehicles up the very poor tracks into the area. While we were playing, several people decided to explore the farther ends of the field. At the end of one of the Jeep trails, there was a collection of long-abandoned shacks, Quonset huts, and stripped cars, one of which was a brand new van from a music store. It looked like someone had been using this area to dump stolen vehicles, after taking what they wanted. We finished playing and called the police on the van; we had no idea how they had managed to wriggle that van up into that area. Maybe pot farmers? Aside from the van, nothing else in the area looked like it had been used for years. It could have been someone's homestead, or even an abandoned WWII storage area. Best! Our first reaction was to high-tail it out of there before some crazy hobo emerged from the lean-to pointing a gun at us. But we soon realized that the site had been abandoned for some time, so we looked around a bit and poked through the debris, looking for anything of interest or value. It did feel really weird, because I kept wondering where the camp owner went, who he/she was, and why they were living in a crude camp out in the middle of nowhere. Was it someone on the run from the law? Someone down on their luck? Or were they doing something illegal out there? It made the hair on the back of my neck stand up a bit, and my hand was close to my Arkansas toothpick the whole time we were there. Phil Whitmer - While not a meteorite story, my stepson and I did find something strange while hunting for fossils and arrowheads. While exploring a wooded area near the Hillsborough River, just outside of Tampa, we stumbled across an abandoned homeless camp. There was a lean-to with a mattress in it, a big plastic kiddie pool (for bathing and/or catching rainwater), the remnants of a garden, an animal coop, and a very odd assortment of bottles, buckets, birdhouses, and other objects. This out in the middle of a densely-wooded area, far off any trails, and it was a little spooky because it was hidden so well. Everything was low to the ground and concealed with palmetto fronds and vegetation. We literally walked right into the middle of it before we saw it. We took a few photos, logged the GPS coordinates, and kept on going. [meteorite-list] Strange things found while hunting for meteorites : )
Hi All, Last week while exploring a new area in Nevada I made a strange discovery. I was in an area that was composed of numerous small sand dunes and blowouts almost like a small dry lake bed. I walked along the edge of a small sand dune started to find small pieces of a ceramic material. The material was sand blasted and appeared to be very old. Still having no idea what the material could be I soon found out. 75' from my location I could see what looked like a leg. Two years prior to this find while I was scouting for new areas I made a similar discovery. It was a human leg with a shoe attached and a motorcycle lying on the edge of the road with a women standing next to a unconscious man. You can't imagine the thought that was going through my mind at this time. Holy crap, miles from anywhere, no phone service, an unconscious man lying on the shoulder of the road with his leg lying 20' away. My main thought was to check out the patient and notify the local authorities. The man was in critical condition but still breathing . The leg was a prosthetic limb that had fallen off during the accident. To make a long story short , a large elk ran in front of the motorcyclist and caused them to crash. 1 1/2 hours later he was flown to a hospital in California. Now back to my new find . It was an old prosthetic leg that was lying next to a small sand dune . The leg had eroded out of the dune. As i started to get the camera out to take a photograph Brix started to investigate the object. I could just see Brix running off with the leg! The leg appeared to be very old. I just wonder what is next, hopefully no more legs! I hope to have a few picture up soon of my latest discovery. I certainly also have found mighty strange things while hunting for meteorites. In October 2006 I found for the first time in any of the nordic countries a Borneo-dolphin aka 'Lagenodelphis hosei' on a rocky beach facing the Atlantic ocean. It had become stuck in a gully, and was dead. At first I thought it was a rubber plaything. It's only about the 10th species of dolphin to be found in Norway. This type of dolphin is also known as Fraser's dolphin, and one of the last dolphin species to be recognized, first found on Borneo - Sarawak. The worlds foremost expert on these, Thomas Jefferson!, said from the photos I took, that none came close in looks than the Borneo-dolphin. It made it to the front page of the local newspaper, but only after having gone several rounds with dolphin experts here in Norway, as it first was assumed to be one of the most common types seen in Norway. So if you don't find meteorites, you always find something else... Regards, Bjørn Sørheim Hi All, Last week while exploring a new area in Nevada I made a strange discovery. Hi All, Thanks for the great replies. Speaking about military jets, Kyle ( My son) and I were on a Nevada Dry lake bed looking for meteorites when a jet appeared out of nowhere. The F16 had to be 75-100' off the ground and only 300' to the South of us. The jet then traveled 2-3 miles across the lake and then shot straight up leaving a trail of dust almost like giant smoke rings as it disappeared. Even if you don't find meteorites while out hunting, exciting events like these make it all worth the time. Re: [meteorite-list] Strange things found while hunting for meteorites : )
While not a meteorite story, my stepson and I did find something strange while hunting for fossils and arrowheads. Mike: I stumbled upon almost the exact same setup while traipsing through the dense thicket looking for soft-shell turtles somewhere in the middle of Florida back in the late 1970s. I thought it was some kind of camp for runaway kids. It would be weird to live in those conditions. I kept thinking a psycho was about to murder me at any minute so I didn't stay long. Re: [meteorite-list] Strange things found while hunting for meteorites : )
Yeah, when we first found it, we were a little apprehensive. To explain the bowling balls: Do a google search for Bowling Ball Cannon. People actually build and fire cannons for bowling balls, some of which can shoot a bowling ball 2 miles. I then met the toothless owner who told me not to be afraid because Buddy or Bud for short doesn't bite very hard or all that often. He then drank one of the beers and offered me one. I think I was more afraid of the owner than the dog.
