Re: [meteorite-list] The top 60 meteorites

2018-05-15 Thread Dark Matter via Meteorite-list
I think a top ten list would be much more effective.

There could be an overall 10, a beginner 10, an advanced 10, a historic 10,
a scientific 10, a representative (teaching) 10, or a personal 10.

But as Mike noted with:
“NWA 998 - very interesting Martian that holds it's value well.”

The subjectivity will become overwhelming. I know. I’ve been there.

Re: [meteorite-list] The top 60 meteorites

2018-05-15 Thread Dark Matter via Meteorite-list
I believe Orgueil was the first meteorite suspected to contain life. And
also a good candidate for every list. 84001 would be the first for Martin
life however.

And I think Tucson needs no human help to get on a list. But if money is a
criterion then Lost City should be on the list twice since it was an
upfront investment.

Cheers.

Interesting point Mike. I think I was looped in on the stimulus for such a
reply as well. Been a few years.

But in reality, museums and even NASA make lists of display and collection
specimens. I can easily imagine ALH84001 landing on one of those lists.
Spending time with ALH84001 was on my bucket list. Here's a pic of what I
played with at JSC:

Alh84001 is government property and if you have some it’s a bad bad thing.
So how could that ever be on a must have collection list?

Hi Mendy and all,

Good list for sure. Some of those are hard to get. Just a note that I have
listed in the past 4 months, or will list about 35 our of the 60.

Easy to say, but any Nininger item would be a great part of any collection.
Even if you only have one Nininger Item.

Happy collecting!

I consider the Estherville Iowa fall a classic. It has interesting
observations of the fall, and under bright light, the olivine matrix is
multicolored on polished pieces and surrounds iron inclusions.

Hi Mendy and all,

What a list below!!

I would add Sariçiçek, observed fall, very fresh with excellent glassy crust
and most pieces exhibiting flow lines and orientation.

Also, great idea to make a list of "obtainable" meteorites for the new
collector.

Best Regards,

Great list Mendy. You hit most of them. I would only add a small handful.

NWA 482 - probably one the most interesting lunars for a variety of reasons.

NWA 998 - very interesting Martian that holds it's value well.

Bonita Springs or Winona - for the Indian connection.

Glorieta Mountain - arguably one of the most beautiful US pallasites.

Chelyabinsk - this one needs no introduction.

Calcalong Creek - the lunar that started it all - if you can find a
Bessey Speck of it.

Carancas - the crater maker.

Off the top of my head that's all I can think of right now

Subject: [meteorite-list] The top 60 meteorites

Someone on my FB page
(https://www.facebook.com/groups/meteorites.tektites.impactites/) asked a
great question about what are the "must have" meteorites as a NEW collector.
I thought this would make a great topic of discussion for the MetList as
well. Here is a list I found online many years ago. I certainly do not agree
on some of these meteorites, but what would you recommend to add or remove?

This list is 60 meteorites, I'll filter through all responses and see where
we end up. I'm not stuck on 60, could be 50 or it could be 100. Please do
not recommend meteorites that are unobtainium. If you could explain your
choice that would be a great benefit.
