[meteorite-list] coloma witnesses

2012-05-15 Thread Mike Hankey
Hi Folks,

I'm going back to Coloma on Friday and staying for another week.

While I am there I would like to interview some witnesses in Coloma
and surrounding areas. Very few witnesses from near/inside the
strewnfield submitted reports to the AMS and it would be good to get
these reports.

When I do the interview, I usually use a tripod, inclinometer and GPS
compass. This allows me to capture the azimuth and elevation angles
for the beginning and ending points as accurately as possible. Any
data I gather I will submit to the AMS site and it will be publicly
available. I want to do these interviews in an attempt to improve the
information we have on the trajectory.

If you have any good witness reports from people you met in the field,
who actually saw the fireball or smoke trail please consider passing
on the witnesses contact info to me off list. A name and email or
phone number for each witness would be great.

Thanks,

Mike

Re: [meteorite-list] coloma witnesses

2012-05-15 Thread Mike Hankey
Dan,

Thanks yes I did see the video. Very awesome.

I've been able to do some work utilizing the topographic features of
google earth and mapping them to the pictures, but there's still a
good bit of uncertainty.

With regard to the picture and video, what we really need to do is get
out to these 2 locations (North Reno for Lisa South of Fresno for
the video) with a DSLR camera, tripod and a clear night. Then take an
astrophoto recreating the same field of view as was used in the
fireball images, but also capturing stars in the image. We could then
stretch out the 2 sets of photos in photoshop so that the mountain and
ground features line up. At that point we would have very nice AZ EL
readings for both of these photos.

I'm working with someone now who is trying to get these calibration
photos done, but he has limited time and it might take him a month or
more to get it done.

So.. if anyone is near reno or fresno and would like to help out with
this effort please LMK.

Based on the witness reports I've reviewed so far, I believe there is
a bit of northern tilt to the trajectory. My hope is that by
interviewing witnesses close to coloma, we maybe able to confirm this.
Any witness contacts will be put to good use, so please send them to
me, if you got em.

Thanks,

Mike

Re: [meteorite-list] coloma witnesses

2012-05-15 Thread Mike Hankey
Dan,

I can't say with much certainty right now. The trajectory Jake came up
with is the best guess right now and I do think it is very close to
reality. However, based on some witness reports and also analysis of
the 2 videos I think there could be a 5-10ยบ tilt toward the north as
opposed to a straight E-W track. Take this with a grain of salt
though because I can not prove this right now.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike if you will get a map the community of loomis is directly west of
coloma to the north would you say that the trajectory line is heading
towards loomis or north of loomis of course this line is north of mark fries
trajectory line almost in line with highway 49 before it turns north
