[meteorite-list] eBay ads

2003-12-15 Thread Dave Harris
Hullo
As someone who uses this Metlist for eBAy plugging, I am glad that I am not
offending anyone by doing so. I always declare eBay ad in the title and
as stated earlier - if you don't like it then just delete - which is what I
do with some listees' contributions anyway!!
I too do not think it is such a good idea to fragment the list by sending
eBay stuff to another list - if I have an auction ending within24 hours or
so then I would like people to know about it rather than rely on someone
going to the Yahoo list.

As for Galaxy meteorite... well - an abomination of taste and I think
misleading. If you are a neophyte to the world of meteoritics then this ad
could easily leave you burnt and ignorant and with a bad opinion of (honest)
meteorite dealers. The ranting in his eBay ads should set alarm bells off
but it seems not! I cannot believe that selling such rubbish is helping to
establish a good reputation for other Met dealers who may be tarred with the
same brush after dealing with this person.
I personally think that he should NOT be using the word meteorite on any
of his eBay ads. His flippant responses to the neutral and negative
feedbacks show that he really doesn't give a damn about the purchaser of his
pre-infant's school crap!
I see him as a charlatan who can only bring disrepute to the hobby and
business of meteoritics. It is analogous to someone buying a kiddies'
doctor's kit and then insisting he performs a genuine medical exam on you!

A dangerous precedent is being set here.

[meteorite-list] ebay ads

2003-12-14 Thread Comcast Mail

Does anyone else think that the debate over
technicalities are more annoying than the actual ebay ad posts
themselves?

Just curious

Or lets take a vote
How many appreciate the sales
ads?
How many are against it?

Anyone with time to waste please keep track of
tallying the votes, and let majority rule.

Bob and List,

Thank you for asking.

I like the sales ads.
I like the ebay ads.
I like crooks being outed.
I like hearing from hunters, snarly or not.
I like the science discussions.
I like Proud Tom.

John List,

MY vote: Well said John. Concise and to the
point!

The adds, eBay and otherwise,DO relate to our
subject. But there's a miserable bunch of spam that doesn't, and I hate to
admit that this email from me is closer to the latter than to the former.
Sorry.

The problem with the separate Yahoo eBay list is that most of
us have inboxes overflowing with garbage (and the meteorite list, junk and all,
is some of theGOOD stuff). But I'm not shopping for another site to
visit to get the rest of the story; instead, I need a way to simplify the
inbox.

As for eBay, I go straight to eBay and look at the
"closing today" category. (As a result, I miss some "Buy Now"
opportunities. I only hear about them on the list).

Further, some of us old dogs aren't even looking for new
tricks. We feel pretty proud just doing the things we know. I've
learned my way around this list, website management, eBay, and even feel like I
know some of you that I've neveryet met! I've got no problem with
the concept of the eBay list, but I haven't even seriously considered going
there. If I represent any significant sector of this readership, THAT may be a
problem.

Here's my idea: Let's keep the eBay METEORITE
announcements here, and all the METEORITE adds, and send the female dog,
whine, and personal attack sessions that have no METEORITE info, availability,
questions, stories, cautions, etc., to some other location ( I wouldn't
even need to know the location--).THAT would simplify my
inbox!

This list is part of my life. I'm not whiningjust
voting.

Merry Winter Solstice and a Happy New Orbit to
All!

[meteorite-list] eBay ads-discussion

2003-12-03 Thread E.J
A gentle comment here...

I think the purpose of the ebay Meteorites group is for people
interested in ebay auctions to have a single place to consolidate all
the announcements and to ease the traffic off this list. I don't quiet
see the reason for using both that list and the meteorite central list
but many do so.

I see a creep back towards tripple and quadruple postings across the
several lists and the notices are getting back to almost daily
anouncements for the same auctions.

I ask all sellers to do some soul searching and see if the frequency of
announcements and the posting of them here on the meteorite central list
is really in your and potential buyer's interests. You'll have to
decide that for yourself.

I am not objecting, per se, just an observation that the ads traffic
is perhaps rising above the comfort level on this lis again.

I thought I had most sales ads on this list filtered but some are
slipping through. I personally prefer to view potential acquisitions on
the ebay [EMAIL PROTECTED] groups.

IF you ARE going to post auctions here...PLEASE use the standard AD in
the subject line.(not Ebay or auction or sale etc).

Thanks!,
Elton

Elton,
According to the General List Policies it should say "Sale" rather than "Ad".
