[meteorite-list] meteorite legality responce.
A listmember sent me this, and I think it is great! It sums up my thoughts to the T. My meteorites were legally obtained. I'm not an attorney and thus in no position to offer you or anyone legal advice. Consult a qualified attorney if you want professional legal advice and possibly a bond to back it up as an insurance policy should unforeseen contingencies complicate any expedition anywhere. Or just buy meteorites from a meteorite hunter who has already invested. Basing trips on incomplete, spoon-fed information from competing meteorite hunters isn't a bright idea in my opinion so if you are truly planning a trip you should plan accordingly. Re: [meteorite-list] meteorite legality responce.
Thanks Mike and others - legally obtained is all I need to know right now, all the other stuff suggests there is a legal process one must follow to hunt, collect, and export and I understand if you do not wish to share that information. It is obvious that many are going, good people, respected people. Never has one of them mentioned the police until last night. That was enough for me to ask, to find out if the naysayers had any merit. They have sat silent on this topic and such silence speaks volumes...they really don't KNOW what they are talking about. I just got nervous about a fun trip being ruined, what with the mention of police and all, along with the fact that I have heard everything from no restrictions to the Sultan can reach all the way into the US and get them back. I am several months out, still much to plan and arrange, this helps. Rob Wesel http://www.nakhladogmeteorites.com -- We are the music makers... and we are the dreamers of the dreams. Several months out? You had better check your calender, then check where Oman is. You have about 1 more month MAX until the winter months return, as it is one of the hottest places on the planet. The weather website I am using suggests an average high temp of 97.3 F during my projected window for going but you are correct, there are cooler months to go. Re: [meteorite-list] meteorite legality responce.
Yes, that is the average, after the middle of April, the daily temps in the meteorite areas are well into the 100 degrees. The reason that is a danger is the fact that if you break down, you cant carry enough water to survive long enough to make it to the road. And if you want to hunt meteorites, you need to go at least 40 to 50 kilometers from the road. I suggest extreme caution and planning Rob, satellite phones etc, your life depends on these things out there. Re: [meteorite-list] meteorite legality responce.
Mike, I am comfortable with all of us being responsible for the meteorites each of us sells. I have never hunted meteorites out of this country and I am interested in the do's and don'ts in other places. None of us would want to get in trouble and end up in some rough prison in a land far away. Nor would I wish it on anyone.
