Hi Anne and list, I agree 100% with Anne on this issue, the Metlist is a public forum. Our actions and words are viewed buy the world or professionals and non-professionals. It is also a portal for the business world. I have not read or know of everything Proud Tom has said, but I do know that if I as a professional in Australia was to allude to sexually orientated jokes and or present offensive or discriminatory material at work, then I would be subject to Australian Law. Law designed to protect individuals from types of illegal offensive behaviour. Quite frankly this all occurred because Bob Evans was silly and tried to self pair a 'rock' to a Lunar that looked nothing the same.instead of doing the right thing and being professional and and at least taking it to a lab first! I am no expert at identifying meteorites, but even I told Bob he must have been joking to think it was a pair! Wether he was intentionally trying to scam, I don't know, I have my assumptions If I had found a Lunar here in Australia, I would not even be able to keep it! So when I saw Bob selling a 'Lunar' he did not even get checked by someone who knows what there doingI was thinking to myself he is totally disrespecting the Liberty he has! so there you have it.. However, today I've received an anonymous email that proves to some small degree that in 2004 Proud Tom was officially recognized as an esteemed gentleman and an ambassador. No Ruben, he was not funny. He was a black-eye on the whole Meteorite Community. Example: Did you notice that there are very few women on the MetList, I seem to be the only one to contribute regularly. There used to be several others, when is the last time you heard from Jeanne, Tracy, Anita,.. etc. There might have been more than one reason for their disappearance, but he certainly was one of them. The MetList is not a private club, it is a public forum, you can search it using Google. So we are all Ambassadors to the Meteorite World, and the MetList must be kept to a level that will not reflect badly on any aspect of the Meteorite Community. I've seen some of the so-called Proud Tom material. A small minority of it was mildly amusing. A good majority of it was not funny at all. Another small minority of it was offensive. After examining it, one thing was clear - Proud Tom did not like certain people and his treatment of them was offensive. Matteo and Anne were the target of crude and childish attacks. Others were treated with kid gloves by Tom. If the offensive attacks on certain people are removed, the overall impression is more good-natured, albeit not well written. There is nothing wrong with humor or satire. I enjoy a good ribbing from time to time, as long as it is good-natured and intelligent. (something I have admittedly been on both sides of in the past). I learned my lesson and try to be more considerate when I am poking fun or venting frustration. Perhaps Proud Tom (whoever he really is) grew tired of the schtick and put that persona behind him. Frankly, I hope it stays that way. I agree with some sentiments here that the Met-List should have a higher standard of content than alluding to oral sex and pasting rodent heads onto human bodies as a method of launching personal attacks under the guise of satire. The Met-List is not a Dean Martin Roast - or at least, I hope it's not. It's not my decision, but that's my two quaatloos. I also regret that we do not see more women contributing on the List. A couple of years ago, on April's Fools (no less), I offended Regine Peterson. I felt bad, and I apologized. She recently posted a great link to the Indian Coffee Table book from GSI. I really liked that link and I am glad she posted it. It is valuable to the overall health of the List that people not be offended by off-topic, offensive, childish behavior. Satire = good. For the record I enjoyed proud tom and wasnt offended and thought that it was great fun. However, I am with Anne on this one. For example you would never see a similar site spoofing the worlds top Chrysler dealers or restaurateurs (Or the main players in pretty much any other industry either). Proud Tom does reflect badly on the meteorite community and sort of makes many of the worlds top meteorite people look like a bunch of drunken freshman on frosh night that mysteriously gets the photographic record posted on facebook. Remember, this is not a few pictures and jokes being passed around a small bunch of friends in Tucson or Munich but open for anybody on the world wide web to see. Police have been trying to educate 15 year olds about posting revealing photos of themselves on networking websites reminding them that it could come back to haunt them in 10 years time (When presumably they have matured a bit and has employers and others looking for past evidence of their character) I think that it is very telling that the author has chosen to remain anonymous (Worried about lawsuits maybe) Why are you afraid to show yourself?. I am sure that some people (And their lawyers) would like to know who you are. Hi, I have to agree with Mark Ford - I think it is a little dangerous to launch into someone and take the mickey without their express consent. If Proud Tom wants to do a friendly jibe on someone then I think it would be appropriate, professional and respectful for PT to email the individual asking his permission. Hi All, I just received this from Proud Tom who declined the revelation of his True Identity: If there's enough interest, I'm ready to put together more zany Proud Tom adventures to share with others. I know the emails I have gotten OFF LIST run at least 20 to one stating they ENJOY the humor of Proud Tom. Furthermore, since he tends to set up a web page for people to visit, I suggest those NOT enamored of his brand of humor simply not click to the URL. In any event, it would seem that if numerous people state they would enjoy seeing another round of Proud Tom he will be setting up a web page. If no one expresses interest, sounds like he won't. Well, Watched the Chargers do it again - than rushed to the computer to read the latest Proud Tom.. While I found a considerable portion hysterical, I did find it tedious to be focussed almost entirely on one personality. While Steve clearly is a champ when it comes to taking a joke, unless Proud Tom is secretly Steve, himself, I definately felt it was overkill by more than a bit. C'mon Proud Tom, you can do better than this. The list is crawling with characters. If it weren't for Steve's exceptional sense of humor and gentlmanly good grace in having a laugh at himself, this would have been downright attacking. You have shown yourself far more creative and talented than to limit yourself to a single topic. One might say you beat that horse to death. Please return to your championship form in the future. though, given Steve's grace under fire, I will admit there were a few real belly busters in there. Just please spread them around in the future. Of course, the author of proud tom took extra liscense by distorting faces not officially included in the actual competition, not to mention clothing but who knows?
