Hi all,

It's amazing how much notoriety Steve Curry continues to generate, despite
having no real allies and no credibility in the community. Merely being
provocative seems to be enough to grab the headlines. Fortunately, through a
coordinated effort by members of the IMCA, Mr. Curry has now been banned from
selling on ebay as of today. I can't take any credit as I wasn't involved
personally, but I'm proud of the IMCA members who have taken a stand for
authenticity, despite personal attacks and threats of retribution.

Curry has been pounded to death on this List
at great length; no way he's accepting any mail
from anybody.

The man is a classic megalomaniac. Why he can't
just insist he's Napoleon or Hitler like the clichéd
cartoon megalomaniac instead of focusing on his
imaginary meteorites?

I'd be willing to buy him a little Napoleon jacket
to strut around in his little village with his hand
tucked in at the belly if he would stop confusing
half a state with his meteorite madness.

Dear list members,

"IT IS MY FERVENT HOPE THAT THIS FANTASTIC WORLD RENOWNED SPECIMEN WILL FIND
IT’S
WAY INTO THE HANDS OF SCIENCE TO BE STUDIED AND PRESERVED FOR STUDENTS
AND RESEARCHERS TO BENEFIT FROM FOR CENTURIES TO COME AND IT WILL TAKE A

I couldn't agree more!
If there is anyone on the list who has the financial means to buy this specimen,
please do and donate it to a known and trustworthy museum.
It would be too bad if this specimen fell in the hands of someone who is not
aware of the enormous responsibility
that comes with the ownership of a specimen like this one.
I think I say this in the name of many of us on the list.

[meteorite-list] Wow! what a meteor this morning, Fragmented.

2010-11-08 Thread bernd . pauli
Hello Dave, Dirk, Rob, and List,

"this morning at 4:20 or 4:25AM, ... slow moving meteor ... came out of
the western sky and headed south east. It came in very low in the sky with
sparks trailing ... a very bright flash that lit up the sky and it looked like
the
front or bottom blew out as it fragmented."

I wonder if that may have been a "sizable", fragmenting Taurid (debris from
Comet 2P/Encke). Taurids are relatively slow but sometimes blaze quite brightly!

Cheers,

Bernd

2010-11-08 Thread Dave Myers
Hi Everyone,

I cannot beleave the Bolite I seen this morning at 4:20 or 4:25AM, I was
outside
setting on my daughters deck
drinking coffee in the cold,(waiting to go hunting) when looking south, The
bigest, brighest  "slow moving" meteor I have ever seen came out of the western
sky and headed south east. I was in Monroe Ohio, which is between Cincinnati
and
Dayton. It cam in very low in the sky! with sparks trailing

As it was 10 to 15 degrees above the Horizon There was a Very Bright Flash that
lit up the sky and it looked like
the front or bottom blew out as it fragmented.

At this Time it entered the City sky light, of west Chester, ohio which is
directly south of Monroe, and I lost sight of it complety. This is the 1st one
like this I have ever seen and will never forget it. It was far enough away
that
I heard no sound.

There must be alot people traveling south on I-75 and I-71 who seen this, so we
should here more reports today.

Also, I now see why some people think there seeing a jet on fire, It was moving
at the speed you would think a jet would. MY 1ST, WAY TOO COOL!

[meteorite-list] Wow, what a memory.

2009-01-21 Thread STARSANDSCOPES
Hi all, I was just going through my meteorites and their back up
documentation.

I found an unpleasant reminder of Sept. 11, 2001. Greg Hupe had a 99 gr end
slice of Zag that he had started a week earlier. I had bid several days
before the end of the auction.

When it ended on the evening of the 11th and I won the auction I sure wasn't
thinking of meteorites and I don't think Greg was either.

It seems like the whole world shifted on that day. Kind of like a Sliders
episode. Any one remember that SiFi show? It sure doesn't feel like were
back in the proper dimension yet.

Let's hope this new economy allows for our chosen science/hobby to still
flourish.

Just in case you haven't seen them yet. I just "walked" past further slices of

[meteorite-list] Wow, an even bigger nut

2007-10-06 Thread Darren Garrison
>From the comments in one of the Living in Peru stories on the meteorite:

What I encountered at the US Capitol, I believe to be the entities that exited
the green spheres. Where I imaged these anomalies at the US Capitol is devoid of
life:.ie: dead. The grass in one area was mutated, unlike anything I have ever
seen? If these objects are of another nature: atomic structure, then it is
obvious that this energy is toxic. As indicated in Robert Stanley book, there is
an issue to this that is far greater than meets the eye. They are here, what
crashed in Peru may have unleashed something far greater than any sickness? I
was burned by something at the US Capitol. I witnessed this green anomaly "warp
out" and exit through a "Stargate". If you think what crashed is a meteor, then
explain the limited impact creator, and the boiling liquid? I think you should
be looking in the infrared range for your illnesses. That which is unseen to the
human eye but in infrared.

Museum exhibit showcases different uses of glass
Updated: 3/30/2007 7:06:21 PM
By: Kat De Maria

Curiosities of Glassmaking pays tribute to unusual collections that date
back
centuries known as "cabinets of curiosities."

"The cabinet of curiosities typically included botanical specimens, insects,
unusual horns or tusks, and skeletons. Kind of all the kinds of things that
were
made in the natural world that were deemed interesting and unusual," modern
glass curator Tina Oldknow said.

So, Tina decided to create her own cabinets of curiosity. She went through
the
museum's collections and filled these cases with all things glass, many of
which
were rather unique.

"I found odd things from Corning Glass Works made during the second World
War.
Because of the metal shortages, they made things like glass-tipped bullets
and
glass irons," Oldknow said.

Some of the curiosities date back a whole lot further, such as beads from
the
tenth century B.C. that were believed to ward off the evil eye and balls to
ward
off witches. And, those items don't even count among the most morbid.

"We have a copy of a patent that was issued by the US government in 1903 to
a
man from Herkimer, New York for preserving the dead in glass," Oldknow said.

Some of the curiosities aren't even man-made.

"We also have in our collection wonderful examples of glass made by nature:
fulgarites made when lightning strikes sand or tactite made from meteorite
impacts," Oldknow said.

The curator said the items' diversity represents the range of glass
displayed
elsewhere in the museum.

"They really don't expect to see the kind of range of things that they see
throughout the museum. This show is kind of a little encapsulation of all

Museum exhibit showcases different uses of glass
Updated: 3/30/2007 7:06:21 PM
By: Kat De Maria

Curiosities of Glassmaking pays tribute to unusual collections that date back
centuries known as "cabinets of curiosities."

"The cabinet of curiosities typically included botanical specimens, insects,
unusual horns or tusks, and skeletons. Kind of all the kinds of things that were
made in the natural world that were deemed interesting and unusual," modern
glass curator Tina Oldknow said.

So, Tina decided to create her own cabinets of curiosity. She went through the
museum's collections and filled these cases with all things glass, many of which
were rather unique.

"I found odd things from Corning Glass Works made during the second World War.
Because of the metal shortages, they made things like glass-tipped bullets and
glass irons," Oldknow said.

Some of the curiosities date back a whole lot further, such as beads from the
tenth century B.C. that were believed to ward off the evil eye and balls to ward
off witches. And, those items don't even count among the most morbid.

"We have a copy of a patent that was issued by the US government in 1903 to a
man from Herkimer, New York for preserving the dead in glass,” Oldknow said.

Some of the curiosities aren't even man-made.

“We also have in our collection wonderful examples of glass made by nature:
fulgarites made when lightning strikes sand or tactite made from meteorite
impacts,” Oldknow said.

The curator said the items' diversity represents the range of glass displayed
elsewhere in the museum.

"They really don't expect to see the kind of range of things that they see
throughout the museum. This show is kind of a little encapsulation of all that,"
Oldknow said.

And, some other things for curiosity's sake.

Re: [meteorite-list] Wow. Look what I just stumbled across!

2006-10-24 Thread Sterling K. Webb

Hi,

In this section, you will find references to the
"hydroplate" theory. You really should back up to
the table of contents and investigate the "hydroplate"
theory, which maintains that there is (or was) a vast
subterranean ocean 10 miles deep under the crust, a
kilometer thick chamber, mounted on pillars, surrounding
the Earth and filled with an ocean.
This is a delightful throwback! And when I say
"throwback," I mean 'way back. This is the "abyssmal"
ocean of ancient myth. The Sumerian word for it was
"apsu" or "absu" from which the word "abyss" derives
(the only word in English with a Sumerian root).
But the concept was already old at the time of the
earliest Sumerian culture and can be traced in Ubaid
pottery motifs back to 5300 BC. (This dating would make
the myth older than the world in this fellow's cosmology!)
The mythological apsû was freshwater: lakes, springs,
rivers, wells, and other sources of fresh water were thought
to draw their water from the apsû. The Sumerian god Enki
(Ea in Akkadian) was believed to have lived in the apsû
since before human beings were created. His wife Damgalnuna,
his mother Nammu, and a variety of creatures also lived in
the apsû. In the city Eridu (predating the Sumericans, an
Ubaid city), Enki's temple was known as E-abzu ("the
abzu temple") and was located at the edge of a swamp,
an apsû. Certain tanks of holy water in Babylonian
and Assyrian temple courtyards were also called apsû
or abzu.
Of course, it's nicely dressed up in "scientific" gobble-
dity-gook about "supercritical water;" I do like a good
myth-maker! The "Great Fountains of the Deep" make the
ocean trenches, mid-ocean ridges, all strata, all limestone,
blow all the comets and asteroids and meteorites off the
face of the Earth. The Sumerians would be delighted at
how durable their myth is!
One might suppose the author of this fantasy to be
superficially self-educated, but he is a Ph.D. from MIT,
has taught college courses in physics, mathematics, and
computer science, is a retired full colonel (Air Force), West
Point graduate, and former Army ranger and paratrooper,
former Director of Benet Research, Development, and
Engineering Laboratories in Albany, New York; tenured
associate professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy; and Chief
of Science and Technology Studies at the Air War College
(he says), and only found his way into this particular "pocket
universe" after retirement. (My taxes are contributing to the
military pension that supprts him while he does this nonsense.
I should be miffed or ask for my two cents back.)
The really fascinating thing is that he "saves" the Biblical
creation and chronology by resort to an ancient mythos not
found in the Bible, one which the Biblical authors would (and
did) regard as thoroughly beyond the pale. They would have
smote him down as an Assyrian apologist... (The Sumerians
being long forgotten by the time the Bible was written.)
But this is a durable myth; it creeps back into the cosmology
of Cosmas Indicopleustes:
http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/awiesner/cosmas.html
although Dr. Brown leaves out the square corners of the
Earth and the pillars that hold up the Heavens (careless
of him).
   Very entertaining piece of Whackology.

Dang, what a note to see that a new fall has occured in India! I am now in
Finland, on my way back to Sweden to hunt Muonionalusta. By this time
tomorrow, I plan to have a pile of irons, a bag full of CC, and be making
plans for India trip as well!
I have sent specimens of the Moss Norway fall to a top scientist in the
USA to work on, so we might have an idea soon. I have many fragments as
does Morten Bilet. It will be up for sale in a few weeks, but there is not
much to offer as most fragments are small, around 1 or 2 grams, but we
have some larger ones. I will likely be offering my larger pieces to
Museums in trade.
I may well be back in Moss, Norway in a few days, but the Sweden trip was
planned and we would have lost our plane tickets if we didnt go today.

that I`ve seen in many a year tonight. Lasted about 3
seconds and traveled to the west, north west, from my

moon, it was quite the site, and blueish in color.
Just wanted to share that with everyone since it`s

Darren, those are called Shingleback lizards, and according to a reptile
dealer, they should be worth from $1500 to $3000 each! They are everywhere
in the outback, but forbidden for export.

Hey, how about auctioning off one of those weird, round-tailed reptiles like
on this auction:

I'd take one of those.

[meteorite-list] WOW magnetic south?

2003-11-19 Thread Pierre Rochette
Dear list

following Rob message, I would say some knowledge exists on the core
behavior and the reversal processes. You can see more at the adress
below, including a movie of a simulated reversal.
http://www.psc.edu/science/Glatzmaier/glatzmaier.html

The uneasy thing to understand in the reversing dynamo is that you do
not have to reverse the sense of liquid flow to reverse the field:
the same flow pattern can sustain both sense of magnetic field (and
coupled electric currents). Second usual misconception is that the
axial rotation part (constant distance to Earth center) of the flow
does not create any field, it is just the vertical flow (due to heat
exchange) that matters, although this flow is "organized" through
Coriolis force by the Earth rotation.

Re: [meteorite-list] WOW magnetic south?

2003-11-18 Thread Rob Wesel
Tom-

As for the magnetohydrodynamics question the answer is...no one knows.

The Earth's core is believed to be a solid iron sphere with a liquid iron
exterior. The liquid core rotates in the same direction as the solid core at
a slightly slower rate. When the liquid iron in the core of the earth
rotates, electrical currents are generated and these electrical currents
form a magnetic field, that much we feel pretty good about, but why the
liquid changes direction remains enigmatic. Some attribute it simply to
chaos and agree that cooling is likely the cause but the timing is random.
Another fringe theory by a lunatic, or genius, named Marvin Hernden likens
the earth's core to a uranium nuclear reactor. The heat from the "reactor"
rises and that motion propels the Earth like a steam engine. As the uranium
depletes, the reaction slows and stops. Upon "restart", it could very well
go the other way. His theory is not well received. Take a look at your
meteorites and the iron core model makes more sense. Plenty of iron, gravity
does the rest. But for now, it is all theory, we have no idea what the core
is made of or why the magnet poles change every few million years.

I am sure there are others who can put it into better perspective, this was
leftovers from prepping for the movie The Core earlier this year a couple
days after the Park Forest fall, of which I have numerous eBay auctions
running http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/nakhladog/ GOTCHA!

I hope you were kidding on the math question.

A site on Fibonacci:

Sounds like she is really interested in Math.

If so, there is nothing to worry about.

It does look like some kind of creature is trapped
in the "Galaxy Meteorite", It's Alive!  It could be some kind of
twirl-accretion that only occurs in interstellar type meteorites or it
could be a twirl-shock phenomena.  This could account for the diamond like
appearance of the matrix.  A provisional classification could be a G type
twirl achondrite, S8, W0 with a creature clast.  It is beginning to
sound like a must have although not that rare with exactly 300 found by a
single individual.

[meteorite-list] WOW, another one cent ebay sale tonight!

2002-11-27 Thread Michael Farmer

Well, I hope everyone in the USA is preparing for a
nice holiday weekend, but before you go, be sure to see my ebay stuff tonight,
over 60 items ending ALL started at one cent.
Many items worth several hundred dollars. Many
meteorites are still at one cent. Last minute bidding always takes them up but
many end very close together, so that leaves little time to bid on multiple
items.
Also, last night I loaded some VERY LARGE high
DOLLAR meteorite, also all for one cent, and tomorrow will add more, some pieces
worth over $2000 will be loaded for one cent, no reserve.
They will all end on Tuesday. There will be some
interesting battles for those items, go take a look, you will be shocked at what
you see for sale without reserve. Save up your pennies and get ready to
rumble.

Thanks

Geez
farmer. Is there anybody in Morocco that you are not enemies with. Maybe
you should do what everybody else does and learn to deal with the nomads
directly. Whats it now, 17 trips - and you still cant get anybody to show
you material before anybody else. You still cant get first look at anything.
Some people are just slow learners I guess. Maybe after 6o trips you will
get on good terms with somebody.
But
I guess that you are on such bad terms with anybody who speaks the same
language as the nomads that dealing directly with them is no longer an
option for you.
Crawl
back into your hole farmer and continue selling your overpriced falls for
double what anybody else charges and leave the real dealing to the big
boys who know what they are doing and who can deal on a level that dont
get everybody mad at you. Maybe you can even talk John Gwillian into looking
around Tucsons Red Light district next Tucson. You could offer him 4 grams
for free of your next HUGE overpriced fall and he will be eating out of
your hand like a baby. He dont cost much. Hell, maybe he could make enough
money to pay the mortgage on your house. Thats not going to happen if you
try and compete with Habibi. Habibi is legit and is most likely not selling
fake stuff.
Habibi
dont have to be a con artist. Unlike you, Habibi has a very good working
relationship directly with certain nomads and dont have to pay a middleman
in Erfoud for his stuff.
Now
go cry some more farmer. Just dont get more water on your Bensour. It got
wet enough sitting around Algeria for a month during the rain.
Chao
DEAN
PS:
For
the record I dont know Habibi well. I know that he has lots of stuff but
I dont buy from him so I cant vouch good or bad about Habibi from personal
experience. Its not that I wont if he gave me a good offer. Its just that
unlike farmer, I usually cut out the middlemen in my NWA buys. Thats why
Farmer gets pissed off with me when I sell stuff for less than he does.
Also unlike Farmer, I also dont feel a need to run down and tell people
that my competators are people that you should watch out for. But I guess
that Farmer and Habibi are not buying competators. By buying directly from
the nomads I might be Habibis competator but since Farmer dont deal directly
with the nomads Farmer and Habibi are are not buying competators.
In
fact the only reason that Farmer is warning you all about Habibi is because
Habibi is selling stuff for a lot less than Farmer lists things at. That
got Farmer bitching at Casper some years back because Casper sold stuff
for less than him - therby depriving Farmer of an ability to charge more.
And it got him pissed off with me about selling CR2 for $23.50 when the
going rate was $60 (Or so farmer wanted it to be). Not that Habibi is selling
for $10 I guess that I wont get $23.50 in the near future for mine but
I wont use that as an excuse to warn you to not pay Habibi less than half
what I am selling things for. If he wants to undercut my price that his
option. I can handle the competation. I would take any warning that farm!
! er makes about another meteorite competator with a gran of salt. At least
realize where the warning is coming from and treat it as such. We all know
about farmers past warnings now dont we? So lets all let Farmer blow off
more steam now for a few days and then we can all go back to enjoying meteorites
without one dealer offering some vague warnings about some well known competator
who is trashing Farmers prices (Yet again - the same type of attack on
another dealer as we have all herd many times before and must be yawning
about right now).

Well Dean, this is the last straw, an absolutely
unprovoked attack by you. Not once did I mention your name, or say anything

seems that now it is time for you to go. The rules apply to all of us, if I do

2002-10-08 Thread M come Meteorite Meteorites

Hello

Yes is nice pieces, but unfortunately I have ask
prices for ordinary chondrites and he ask many for 1
kg. where I find for a minor price from others
moroccan people, pieces with black crust and
interesting - type ureilites or other material. The
prolem is I have buy time ago over 30 gr. of CR2 for a
minor price offer on Ebay for the 90 gr. pieces, but I
have re-sent in return the material why no persons
wnat buy this materialI no understand
why..sinceraly $30,000 for only 500 gr, of this
eucrite is to much, I have others moroccan persons
offer to me for a minor price, the same for diogenites
and shergottites. Unfortunately I no have money for
buy tons of meteorites from Morocco, but if I win a
lottery surely I buy kilos of this material. I buy
this material for after sale for a just price after
have cut, polished, put in a box and analyzed.

Matteo

Re: [meteorite-list] Wow....

2002-10-08 Thread Adam Hupe

Dear List,

I was asked by a list member if I felt these offerings were real.

We tested some of this material for Habbibi almost a year ago. The
$30,000.00 eucrite he is selling is very interesting. He used the term
"milted" meaning melted which is a good term to describe this HED meteorite.
Some of the glassy melted areas are more than a centimeter across. This is
a very odd and beautiful eucrite. I would be happy with a complete slice of
this one if somebody else is willing to purchase the main mass.

The R-chondrite he is selling is different from NWA 800 and 978 as I have
seen a small sample in the lab. He said it came from Ouzina which I have no
reason to doubt since its chondrules look just like the Ouzina R4 that was
for sell a couple years back.

As for the Martian I have no reason to doubt the authenticity of this piece
since he was the second dealer in contact with the nomadic group who
discovered NWA 1068/1110 and provided us with a few samples for
certification. It looks from the image on eBay to be the real McCoy.

Even though I have my differences, in all fairness, these offerings look
genuine.

I would say that these are legitimate specimens at good prices, especially
the CR2 at $10.00 a gram and everybody accused Bessey of dumping at $23.50 a
gram.

Some of you may think I am crazy by not taking this opportunity to degrade a
perceived competitors auctions but I would rather error on the side of
honesty than cut down what I believe to be, this time, reasonable offerings.

Wishing everybody the best,

[meteorite-list] WOW! thanks

2002-01-04 Thread Graham Christensen

Hey Mike F. and Mike C.,
Thank you, this is the nicest thing anyone's ever done for me. Up here in
Canada it is difficult to get meteorites. I have alot of the cheaper
meteorites, Canyon diablo, Gibeon, Sikhote-alin, Mbale and morocco but I
never have enough money to buy many meteorites because I am too busy with
school. I bought the moroccan and Sikhote-Alin with money I made with a
summer job. I love meteorites, I spend hours staring at my collection
imagining them as parts of asteroids smashing together breaking off pieces
and plunging through the atmosphere of earth, When I was younger I was (and
still am) fascinated by astronomy. I never imagined that I could own a piece
of the cold and unexplored depths of space, It still boggles my mind today.
Sorry, I'm babbling. My address is:

Graham Christensen

This really means alot, thank-you and best wishes in the new year to you and
your families.
