Hi, List,

I have no idea why a few people are receiving
six copies of Steve's ad, but I can tell you that
I received only one. If he had SENT six copies,
we ALL would have gotten six copies, or no copies,
if things were screwed up.
So before we have a 31-message thread on The
Six Copies, I'm pretty sure he didn't send six
copies to the List, OK?
It does happen spontaneously sometimes. There
is a particular virus that does this, but it been so
long since I was infested with it that I forget its
name. I would receive multiple copies of an email
and message the sender, why are you sending all
these copies? and discover that they weren't!
In my case, the virus was in my machine, that
is, the computer receiving the multiple copies, so
those who are receiving multiple copies might want
to check their perimeter defenses, so to speak...
If you're foolish enough to use Outlook Express,
it won't do any good, but you should check anyway.

Hi Sterling and list, I to received six copies of Steve's email. I can
assure you, I don't have a virus and if we did, wouldn't I get six emails
from others as well? It must be a glitch somewhere if some got six and
others did not. : )

Hi everyone, I checked the list archives, the archives received six copies
from Steve or his server so we all should have got six copies.
I am just posting this so you all don't panic thinking you have a virus,
you probably do, but it was not behind your getting six messages! : )

Re: [meteorite-list] STEVE'S ADS -- ONLY ONE

2005-08-06 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Hi, All

I don't doubt that those who received six, did
so. I only know that if a source sends six copies
of a given message to a distribution list, that all
members of that list should receive six copies if
they receive anything at all. QED.
Mail-multiple viruses create multiple (infested)
copies that they may send right away, or sit on for
weeks. I frequently receive an old email, one I
already received weeks or months ago. I can't tell
you what's in them because they've been burned
clean by the time I get them.
Once in a while, I get a why did you send this
to me? message from a list member because they
have had the same experience with one of my
List messages. Naturally, the virus wants there
to be six copies of itself in the MetList archives;
wouldn't you, if you were a virus? The MetList
is a prime target for a mail virus, being much
referenced.
The virus doesn't have to be IN this or that
specific computer, just be able to inject itself
somewhere in the process of message transfer
and go to work from that initial point in order
to spread. It may have been cleaned out of the
initial point of entry by now; doesn't matter.
As for I can assure you I don't have a virus,
Dream On. The best you can hope for is a Quick
Kill once it gets in. The biological analogy is apt.
You kill the germs that enter your person, but you
can't prevent entry without freeze-drying your body
and sealing it in a vacuum! A sterile one.
Q: What percentage of the living cells in your
body are YOUR cells, and what percentage are
members of a species other than H. sapiens you?
A: Nearly 95% of the living cells in your body
are NOT you. Fortunately, your 5% outweighs
the aliens and you are killing them as fast as you
can. So all is well. I can assure you I don't have
any germs... Guess again, but don't turn into
Howard Hughes.

Re: [meteorite-list] STEVE'S ADS -- ONLY ONE

2005-08-06 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Hi,

I've just a slew of on and off List messages
from everybody who got six copies. Yes, yes,
many did, but that PROBABLY means that
when the original uninfected message (one copy)
got sent to by the List server to a member --
any one -- whose computer is infected with
this virus, the virus sent five copies of itself back
(including source header) with itself in it, so
now there's six copies on the List... and so forth.
Don't want to spend a lot of time on virus
strategies -- they are many, complex, tricky --
kill'em now, autopsy'em later.
If you want to blame Steve, your business,
or pleasure, as the case may be. (See time
sequence below.)
I was just contributing data. Not everybody
got six copies. I got a copy of #1 and nothing
else. Now, since every email I get goes through
FIVE virus checks before I get to know of its
existence, #2 through #6 may have simply been
destroyed outright, gunned down at the border
and then the corpse burned to nothing. Some of
my programs are a trifle unsympathetic in their
attitudes, OK? I feel just terrible about it...
If there were six copies went to everybody,
well, I'd destroy them (not delete them) from your
computer if I were you. I think the time lags in
the message times are the result of the virus taking
30 minutes and 48 second to get the original (and
harmless or not) message from Steve, infect it from
an infected host computer and send a copy of itself
back to the List server, 52 seconds to receive it back
and do it again... Hopefully, the List server killed the
virus code, removed it, preserving the text, each and
every time it arrived, and no one got an infected
message at all. That's how it should have happened.
I wonder about the sad fate (possibly just, though)
of messages #2 through #6 that I never got. The
unmarked graves, no paper trail or records, MIA,
the disappeared ones, as they say in Argentina.
I'd get rid of it, anyway. I sure did.
