Hi Anita and List,

It makes sense that the most recent hammers should be the best
documented falls because of the proliferation of digital devices with
cameras. There is also increased awareness of meteorite falls in more
recent years, so we are seeing very solid documentation for hammers.
A good example is Park Forest. Nobody can begin question the hammer
status of Park Forest, because so many targets were struck. So, I'd
take it at face value that all of the known hammers in the last ~10
years are authentic.

Since the year 2000, we have had the following hammer falls -

Apr 30, 2011 - Soltmany (L6 chondrite) : Poland
Jul 17, 2011 - Thika (L6 chondrite) : Kenya
Jul 11-12, 2011 - Draveil/Essonne? (unofficial) - (H chondrite?) : France
Jan 18, 2010 - Lorton (L6 chondrite) : Virginia USA
Apr 14, 2010 - Mifflin (L5 chondrite) : Wisconsin USA
Feb 15, 2009 - Ash Creek (L6 chondrite) : Texas USA
Mar 01, 2009 - Cartersville (unofficial) (ordinary chondrite) : Georgia USA
Sep 25, 2009 - Grimsby (H5 chondrite) : Canada
Apr 12, 2008 - Zunhua (unofficial) (L4 chondrite?) : China
Feb 21, 2007 - Mahadevpur (H4/5 chondrite) : India
Jul 06, 2007 - Cali (H/L4 chondrite) : Columbia
Sep ??, 2007 - (exact day unknown) - Guadalajara (L or LL3 chondrite?) : Mexico
Jul 14, 2006 - Moss (CO3.6 carbonaceous chondrite) : Norway
Jul 17, 2005 - Montney (H6 chondrite?) : Canada
Nov 08, 2004 - Orlando (Eucrite) : Florida USA
Feb 01, 2003 - Hiroshima (H5 chondrite) : Japan
Mar 26, 2003 - Park Forest (L5 chondrite) : Illinois USA
Sep 23, 2003 - New Orleans (H5 chondrite) : Louisiana USA
Feb 03-14 2002 - Alby sur Cheran (Eucrite) : France
Feb 20, 2002 - San Michele (L6 chondrite) : Italy
Jul 21, 2002 - Thuathe (H4/5 chondrite) : Lesotho

That is a total of 21 hammer falls in almost 11 years now - or about 2
per year on average. This year we have been a perfect 3 for 3 on
recovered hammered falls. So we are seeing one of two things - a
statistical increase of hammer falls (due in part to the proliferation
of digital cameras), or Mother Nature has improved her accuracy. You
can also figure that the human population and footprint increases each
year, so the more of us walking around, the more likely we'll
something get hit or be struck by something. It another century, the
majority of falls over dry land will likely be hammers.

The number of well documented falls drops off sharply in the previous
century and most falls from antiquity can be considered anecdotal.

The number of well documented hammers prior to the 21st century may be
less than the number of hammers we have seen in the last 11 years.
Think about that for a moment

Best regards and Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, or Happy Saturnalia. :)

Hi Anita and all,
I have the original 94g Thuathe stone found on the roof of a
dwelling which was included in the original report and established the
Thuathe fall as a hammer fall. This is THE Thuathe Hammer Stone
(though other stones MAY have struck dwellings, this is the only documented
One). It is also the largest Thuathe I have ever seen available.

No, actually - the roof is made of twigs (see photo on my

This from the owner who had a copy of the report - which I

2011-12-23 Thread Frank Cressy
Hi Anita,

I can't speak for falls outside the US, but there are 5 or 6 US falls that
might

fit your parameters.

You are obviously familiar with Cartersville, GA (2007) I'm sure.  It fits all
your

requirements except classification which will come soon I'm sure.  The display
is at the Tellus Science Center.   Others are:

Benld, IL (1938).  I believe most pieces of the impacted auto and most of the
H6 stone are in the Field Museum, Chicago.

The small H5 stone and aluminum shed roof of the Centerville, SD (1956) are on
display at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City.

I believe the Field Museum also has a holed floor board of the Kilbourn, WI
barn that was impacted by a H5 stone in 1911 and a small piece of the stone
(and
maybe a cast of it??).

The Denver Museum of Nature and Science has the impacted roof and dry wall
boards of the Canon City, CO (1973) H6 fall.  It has at least a large fragment
of the stone in its collection.

There are a also a couple of private displays of Park Forest impacted artifacts
(printer and stone) I believe.

Peekskill might not fit your criteria, but I believe there is a cast of the
whole meteorite that goes with the car.

Hope this helps a bit,

Frank
