Re: [meteorite-list] STOLEN meteorites - from Allen Shaw
Hi Scott and all, There are quite a few good dealers who are not IMCA members. In fact some of the larger, most successful dealers are not. So don't cut yourself off from those long time decent dealers. I'd be glad to compose a list for you. I belonged at first but decided not to renew when they became official with dues and so forth. I believe as a newer person collecting meteorites it would be a better choice for your protection. Anne has encouraged me to join again and I probably should. Don't know if I could find two people to recommend me though :-) Perhaps we should have a remaining group of dealers that have some sort of stamp of approval and self governing but then in the beginning that is how things worked. Since we now seem to get a new dealer of meteorites about every month or two, not everyone knows everyone else like in the good old days. --AL Mitterling Mitterling Meteorites Mitterling.com - Original Message - From: Scott Schulz swsch...@astrum.com To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Sunday, August 15, 2010 12:13 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] STOLEN meteorites - from Allen Shaw On Sat, Aug 14, 2010 at 11:41 AM, Barry Hughes bhug...@sneezy.com wrote: I am in the crazy newcomer mode of buying. Scott..you'll find IMCA members are about all honest sellers but also some of my favorites are not IMCA members. Hi Mike and all, The Meteorite.com site, specifically at the Meteorite Times spot, has a lost and stolen page for people to view. I think it is always a good idea to announce it here and post it on the Meteorite.com site. Here is the link: http://www.meteorite.com/missing_stolen.html or you can email them here to let them know if something is missing: i...@meteorite.com I think keeping one site for missing and lost meteorites if more effective than say 20 sites where collectors or dealers might miss information. --AL Mitterling - Original Message - From: Galactic Stone Ironworks meteoritem...@gmail.com To: impact...@aol.com Cc: p...@meteorite.com; meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com; cometeoritec...@yahoogroups.com; meteoritecollect...@yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, August 13, 2010 7:45 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] STOLEN meteorites - from Allen Shaw Hi Anne, Does the IMCA keep a centralized listing of stolen material for the public to keep watch for? It would be nice if everyone would photograph all of the material they purchase. Then if it went missing, it would help identify it. I believe everyone on this list is honorable and do not want to purchase lost, stolen , or illegal to export material. The wonderful thing about meteorites is the provenance. My slices if stolen and cut up can still be identified like a fingerprint. This makes collecting meteorite slices one of the most safe hobbies a person can do. Clear skys! I am in the crazy newcomer mode of buying. My wife found a slice in a small box in the garbage yesterday, because she wanted the box for Christmas gifts. I had thrown it away. That was a wake up event I live out beyond the crackheads and such, so I don't have to worry about theft much. My dogs wouldn't allow it anyway. I think I will sit down someday and photograph everything so I know what I have, first of all, and secondly for insurance purposes in case of fire ..etc. I still can't get over someone stealing so personal a possession like that. I never will understand itand I am 'afraid' I couldn't control myself in such a case. Re: [meteorite-list] STOLEN meteorites - from Allen Shaw
Like that big 444.5 gram slice of pallasite Glorieta Meteorite that I found and was at auction at Tucson in 2001... A slice out of the center of largest Glorieta pallasite ever found, 20.5 Kg. One walked off with it, tucked in a folder. The slice was not mine as I parted with the huge pallasite before the buyer and close friend cut it... Bothers me to this day that one would have the gall to steal that slice knowing the pain of its loss would bring to me and my friend... If that person is reading this... And did the deed, and grace fills your heart, you can always send it back to me, no questions asked, and my forgiveness given... And I think that my friend will agree and also forgive...
