This is the default type if none is specified. plainMappings are stored in a plain text file using the same format as used to generate makemap(8) mappings. On any system from the last year or so, following the reference to makemap(8) takes me to the installed Sendmail items. As the OpenSMTPD makemap(8) man page puts it: The .Nm command first appeared in .Ox 4.6 as a replacement for the equivalent command shipped with sendmail. So I get some OpenSMTPD items, which depend on other items that are not installed, but still appear and do something, as identically named items that Sendmail relies on are installed instead. I may be out of touch here, but certainly in the past this was my experience, using OpenSMTPD items in base and following documentation and assuming that the included items were correct and appropriate. Assumption might not be the best idea, but in this case the assumption was that the Sendmail utilities and documentation were functionally effective as if this was not the case that OpenSMTPD would have it's own utilities that were included in base also and of necessity labelled originally. Best wishes. You might have missed the mailwrapper(8) reference in smtpd(8) : smtpd is not enabled by default. In order to use it as the system mailer, ensure the mail queue is empty, then stop sendmail(8): # /etc/rc.d/sendmail stop Modify the current mailwrapper(8) settings by editing /etc/mailer.conf: sendmail/usr/sbin/smtpctl send-mail /usr/sbin/smtpctl mailq /usr/sbin/smtpctl makemap /usr/libexec/smtpd/makemap newaliases /usr/libexec/smtpd/makemap Rebuild the aliases database, and enable the daemon: # newaliases # echo sendmail_flags=NO /etc/rc.conf.local # echo smtpd_flags= /etc/rc.conf.local # /etc/rc.d/smtpd start

OpenBSD hangs hard on a flashrd system with either 5.2 current or 5.1 stable with athn(4) patches
I have a Pentium III system running 5.1 current with athn(4) hostap power saving patches or 5.2 current. It has the slightly unusual configuration of an ISA video card (X not used) and a 64 bit PCI NIC hacked to run in a 32 bit slot, but is otherwise a bog standard desktop. It's running flashrd due to using an IDE to compact flash adaptor. 5.1 release is entirely stable (it may have hung once, perhaps, in months of operation). Once I put on 5.2 current (from a few days ago) or 5.1 stable with the latest athn patches the system hangs hard, in around 20 minutes to an hour. No response from network, console or anything suspicious in the log if I leave a tail -f /var/log/messages running. I suspect the athn patches aren't the problem, but they're the whole reason I'm trying to patch the firewall. I can try other hardware on a temporary basis, but what's the best method of diagnosing failure/possible things to try? Didn't we discuss this already ? At the moment, smtpd(8) is not the default MTA and as such requires that you take an extra step to activate. If you make this extra step, you are supposed to know what you're doing. There will be a time when we decide smtpd(8) is stable enough to replace sendmail(8) in base, at that point we will figure out what is the proper way to deal with the colliding documentation and the co-existance of the two. We still have a few issues to deal with first and there is no need to be in a hurry fixing non-issues before they are a problem. On the bright side, all feedback has been positive and we mostly receive feature requests, not bugs, these days. No. You have a 1GB flash card, that's easily twice what you need to install standard OpenBSD, at which point, we would care about the results. ... Hi I'm trying to figure out the maximum file system size for ext2 on openbsd, but I can't seem to find it documented anywhere. Does anybody know if the limitation is the old 2TB (as in linux pre 2.6.17 ish), or 32TB as newer implementations? / Claus

I see in pf.conf man page the following : Basic ruleset optimization does four things to improve the performance of ruleset evaluations: 1. remove duplicate rules 2. remove rules that are a subset of another rule 3. combine multiple rules into a table when advantageous 4. re-order the rules to improve evaluation performance I can handle 1, 2 and 3 fine without the optimisation but for the order of the rule, is there any doc on how to optimise the order of the rule order for best performance ? I was also not able to find anything about this. Rule evaluation happens in a certain order. The optimizer reorders the rules so that skip steps can do a better job (e.g. moving rules with the same source IP together). In general rules are evaluated in an order that is roughly interface, direction, rdomain, AF, proto, source IP and dst IP. If there is no match pf calculates something called skip steps which is a hint where to jump to in case of a failed match. In other words if all rules for em0 come first and the packet enters em1 we can skip all those rules after the first test. After the basic tests the proto is checked and additional per protocol evaluation happen (like TCP flags, ports, uid/gid checks...). These checks are not part of skip steps and are not influenced by the optimizer. Only the first 7 matter and are optimized. Perfect, that what I needed to know. That meen that I don't need this optimizer since I already do my own optimisation with anchor. Snort not logging to alerts files
Hello Misc, I've installed Snort on OpenBSD 4.9 from source and everything installed fine. When I configure the following rules I see alerts generated: # cat /etc/snort/snort.conf include /etc/snort/rules/icmp.rules # cat /etc/snort/rules/icmp.rules alert icmp any any - any any (msg:ICMP Packet; sid:477; rev:3;) /usr/local/bin/snort --daq-dir /usr/local/lib/daq -c /etc/snort/snort.conf -l /var/log/snort -i fxp1 So when I ping the outside interface I get the following in /var/log/snort/alert [**] [1:477:3] ICMP Packet [**] [Priority: 0] 09/07-10:30:08.599075 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx ICMP TTL:113 TOS:0x20 ID:25441 IpLen:20 DgmLen:28 Type:8 Code:0 ID:512 Seq:26063 ECHO So I now snort can see packets. Even though I have icmp blocked on the outside interface it still logs it. When download and load the snort rules from the snort site nothing happens. The logfile sits empty. Has anyone successfully installed snort on openbsd and logged data?

As far as I know, thats was a limit of the linux kernel, not the filesystem, so it doesn't apply, but I'm not that familiar with ext2fs.

pxeboot, machine dependent kernel
I have doing quite a lot of netbooting lately. However I can not figure out how to configure a specific machine to use a specific kernel. Is there a way for pxeboot to load a kernel based on something machine dependent, for example, mac address? If not, I have been digging around in sys/stand/boot/boot.c while I have not found where to get the mac address yet would it be preferable to a. look for a boot.conf.macaddress before an unadorned boot.conf b. if not otherwise specified fall back to /bsd.macadress c. macro expansion in boot.conf(somthing in the manner of machine $macaddress) I like option a as that seems like it would be easy to put in and provide configuration power where needed while not complicating the setup in the common case of only ever needing one kernel.
