If you want your USB UPS to work with apcupsd you should disable upd and uhidev drivers in your kernel. When UPS attach like ugen* then it wil work with apcupsd. The laptop has an SSD, partitioned in 4 : ESP, OSX, OSX recovery and OpenBSD. I have the same problem some time ago but not on Mac. I solved this issue by updating SSD firmware. Can't say is it your case or not. I configured it so that it starts in USB 2 emulation mode. The OpenBSD install is the default one as regards disklabel. Each time, I shut OpenBSD down, I get the config_active_children... lines at the end of the dmesg below. Upon reboot, hot or cold, the system complains that / has not been unmounted properly. Automatic file system check succeeds on / but fails on /var. It drops to single user mode, where I need to run fsck_ffs manually and only then go multi-user. Has any one experienced a similar behaviour? Are some errors/warnings in the dmesg I can/should do something about? Thanks in advance for your feedback. Re: Documentation on rc.conf.local lacks important warning
On Sun, February 9, 2014 22:28, VaZub wrote: Hi all, There is a small nuisance I've stumbled upon during my first experiments with OpenBSD. Both the man page for rc.conf(8) as well as the official OpenBSD FAQ (10.3) suggest to avoid editing /etc/rc.conf directly and instead copy it to /etc/rc.conf.local and edit afterwards. Yet it seems both fail Hi. In FAQ it's suggested to copy needed strings, not the file itself: We strongly suggest you do not alter /etc/rc.conf itself. Instead, create or edit the file /etc/rc.conf.local, copy just the lines you need to change from /etc/rc.conf and adjust them as you like. to mention, that in order to prevent your system from going ballistic after doing this, you should also comment out or delete a particular line of code in /etc/rc.conf.local, namely this one: [ -f /etc/rc.conf.local ] . /etc/rc.conf.local. Not good, especially for those who do follow official instructions and still suddenly find themselves with a broken system on their hands for no apparent reason. This might seem like a trivial issue for old-timers, and one is sure to find the appropriate solution with a little bit of deeper googling, but having short relevant notices in the aforementioned manuals could save newcomers some introductory frustration. What do you think? Is there anyone among those looking after the official documentation up to consider such a suggestion? Regards, Vasyl Zubko

With gratitude, thank you very much. Does this device attach as umsm? i.e. do you have an ucom* at umsm in your dmesg? If so, you can use SMS Server Tools, just pkg_add smstools3. See: http://smstools3.kekekasvi.com/index.php?p=configure On OpenBSD the device is usually /dev/cuaUX, where X is 0, 1, or 2, you need to find it, as it changes from device to device... You can probe it with 'cu -s 9600 -l /dev/cuaUX' and send 'AT'. The port you need should answer you 'OK' ciao, David

If you or a company you know are able to assist us, it would be greatly appreciated, but right now we are looking at a significant funding shortfall for the upcoming year - Meaning the project won't be able to cover 20 thousand dollars in electrical expenses before being able to use money for other things. That sort of situation is not sustainable. Hi. Could we collect this sum on special bank account, to gather correct sum for covering electricity expenses? Or OpenBSD Foundation will pay a bill from it's funds? Simplier - should I send money to Foundation right now or should I wait info about direct-electricity-expenses-acccount? We really need even more funding beyond that, because otherwise all of this is simply unsustainable. This request is the smallest we can make. --- Hi everyone. The OpenBSD project uses a lot of electricity for running the development and build machines. A number of logistical reasons prevents us from moving the machines to another location which might offer space/power for free, so let's not allow the conversation to go that way. We are looking for a Canadian company who will take on our electrical expenses -- on their books, rather than on our books. We would be happiest to find someone who will do this on an annual recurring basis. That way the various OpenBSD efforts can be supported, yet written off as an off-site operations cost by such a company. If we reduce this cost, it will leave more money for other parts of the project. We think that a Canadian company is the best choice for accounting reasons. If a company in some other jurisdiction feels they can also do this successfully, we'd be very happy to hear from them as well. I am not going to disclose the actual numbers here. Please contact me for details if serious. Thanks.

You can't reinstall OS without loosing data, so I assume that all data from hard disks is backed up, and the only resource to waste is the time. Even then, again, given due precausion you don't really risk any data loss for any of the OSs. Any blind operations with MBR, bootloaders and partion editor may be destructive without sufficient knowledge. We all know, than M$ always inventing new traps for alternative OS. Care to elaborate? I'm not aware of any traps regarding disk management. And their boot process organization is one of that traps. Again, care to elaborate? Where's the actual trap? You can't simply follow instructions for multibooting with XP when you are dealing with Win7. Same could happen with Win8.1. But it seems it doesn't. This time, I assume. We just get UEFI as a headache. Is it not a trap?

You can test something not in FAQ if you are sure it will make no harm to your system. Dance with bootloaders and partition managers could lead to catastrophe if you make an error. Wireless networks are a pain in general, but the general advice is anyway to make really sure your access point and your client are in fact using the same settings. On this laptop, my /etc/hostname.iwn0 (not the same part, I know, but for most practical purposes the same) has only media autoselect nwid nomap wpakey allfunnybusiness dhcp rtsol This time i've tried setting chan, bssid, nwid, nwkey, wpakey, and wpaakms. I've set these parameters with ifconfig, and also entered into my /etc/hostname.athn0 file. I've never had too much joy from setting those explicitly on the client, but do check what the output of 'ifconfig athn0 scan' says about the access point's settings, if anything. Worth noting is this bit from the athn man page: CAVEATS The athn driver does not support any of the 802.11n capabilities offered by the adapters. Additional work is required in ieee80211(9) before those features can be supported. which means you will need to stick to a, b or g modes for now. - P -- Peter N. M. Other ports are dumb. umsm0 at uhub0 port 4 configuration 1 interface 0 Huawei Technologies HUAWEI Mobile rev 2.00/0.00 addr 2 ucom0 at umsm0 umsm1 at uhub0 port 4 configuration 1 interface 1 Huawei Technologies HUAWEI Mobile rev 2.00/0.00 addr 2 ucom1 at umsm1 umsm2 at uhub0 port 4 configuration 1 interface 2 Huawei Technologies HUAWEI Mobile rev 2.00/0.00 addr 2 ucom2 at umsm2 Try to set up your device to behave like a modem, not NDIS in setup utility it shipped with.

The GUI tool fails for me on amd64 so that needs to be fixed. Thomas, I'll try to test GUI next week on amd64. There were also some discussion if it should replace apc-upsd or not. It never got any further than that. Anyone with commit access, is there anything else that needs to be fixed in this port for it to be included? Those are the only things I know of. I'm strongly of the opinion it should replace the existing port, and the pkgname stem should stay the same so old users can get upgraded with pkg_add -u, even though the upstream name changed slightly and it's been largely rewritten. I agree. My answer is still the same: apc-upsd should be removed. I tend to agree, but I'm a bit concerned that apcupsd won't work with the same devices that apc-upsd does. The configuration files are also very different. I can test on an SU RM via serial and possibly also Symmetra via SNMP but don't have time to do the rest of the work, I'm mainly using NUT anyway. Perhaps we could drop the GUI part of the package for now? At least then we have a package that works (from the test reports received so far). Latest apcupsd-3.14.6 in attachment.
