can you confirm that you actually have XF4-STABLE? a *clean* checkout 
usually cures a non-compiling tree.

sorry for the noise -the problem was my own darn fault. I somehow
completely failed to see the i386 note for building X in FAQ5. When it
was pointed out to me off list, I was wondering how the heck I missed
it. just stupid...
