Originally, I just wanted to pretty-print mdoc manuals in html/css off-line. The available tools were crummy, so I did the original mdocml, but was ugly so I broke the back-end compiler into mdoc(3). This allows for any front-end -- mdocterm, the terminal-encoder, seemed like it would be the most helpful.
