We decided to leave Mono out of the path and instead have a command prompt that sets up the environment. Maybe it's a personal preference, but it also lets you have multiple versions of Mono installed. Maybe we should reconsider? If I recall, Visual studio had an option to either install globally or use their vsvars32.bat to access the compilers, etc. Mono could do the same. I can tell you that we jumped from 1.2.6 to 1.9 in preparation for our next release which will be Mono 2.0.
